Remember the adage we've been brought up on? I'll refresh your memory."The early bird gets the worm". I have a bone to pick with who ever thought of this corny phrase. In the first place, how can he/she implicitly assume that the worm will be always ready to receive the "early bird"? Aren't worms allowed a weekend lie-in? Maybe the poor worm spent Saturday night with a few beers & friends watching the Champions league. What if it isn't able to wake up early?

In short, What if the Worm is late?

I'll build this post on this very premise. I believe the person who coined this phrase inadvertently created a charter of rights for birds which allow them to get the worm if they are early. But he has cruelly left out the poor worm whose rights are being trodden upon. I will argue the case from the Worm's side.

1. A worm, as mentioned before, has a right to lie-in, especially on a Sunday morning.
2. Considering that "worm" is usually a nickname assigned to low-lives among humans, It is befitting that worms be at least allowed to sleep late. [Sleeping late considered to be another disgusting habit among humans. {If the worms are disgusting, might as well have them do all the disgusting stuff (Whose side am I on anyway?)}]
3. What incentive does the Worm actually have to appear early? He's going to end up as breakfast for the bird anyway.
4. Why hasn't a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Worms (SPCW) been set up yet?
5. How can birds actually eat worms? Haven't they tried Chicken 65 yet (Incidentally a bird).

Well, now thats it for the worms. Now coming back to us humans, why on earth would one try to correlate himself/herself with a bird trying to catch a worm if he's supposed to be doing a task for an incentive? Isn't there a better metaphor for an incentive? Of all things, A worm!

Its like saying, "Hey, come to work early tomorrow, I'll have a pile of manure ready for you". I think its high time quotes should change.

I propose a new one.

"The early bird gets bopped on the head by its wife for raising a row at 4 AM"

How's that for practicality?

By the way, birds still searching for worms should visit my Food blog Live to Eat to know that there are tastier things than worms. And by the way, the next rooster to crow out at dawn, ends up on my breakfast table (That ought to get them to empathize with the poor worms)

Cheers!

Heavy Metal-Eating “Superworms” Unearthed in U.K.

Heavy Metal-Eating "Superworms" Unearthed in U.K.

10.7.08 / James Owen / National Geographic

Newly evolved "superworms" that feast on toxic waste could help cleanse polluted industrial land, a new study says. These hardcore heavy metal fans, unearthed at disused mining sites in England and Wales, devour lead, zinc, arsenic, and copper.

The earthworms excrete a slightly different version of the metals, making them easier for plants to suck up. Harvesting the plants would leave cleaner soil behind.

"These worms seem to be able to tolerate incredibly high concentrations of heavy metals, and the metals seem to be driving their evolution," said lead researcher Mark Hodson of the University of Reading in England.

"If you took an earthworm from the back of your garden and put it in these soils, it would die," Hodson said.

DNA analysis of lead-tolerant worms living at Cwmystwyth, Wales, show they belong to a newly evolved species that has yet to be named, he said.

Two other superworms, including an arsenic-munching population from southwest England, are also likely new to science, Hodson said.

"It's a good bet they are also different species, but we haven't categorically proved that," he said.

The findings were announced in September at the British Association Festival of Science in Liverpool.

Micro Processors

Hodson's team's investigation used x-rays to zap worms with intense light, allowing them to track metal particles a thousand times smaller than a grain of salt.

The findings suggest the arsenic-tolerant population produces a special protein that "wraps up the metal and keeps it inert and safe so it doesn't interact with the earthworms," Hodson said.

The lead-eating Welsh worms likewise use a protein to render the metal harmless inside their bodies, he added. The toxicity of the metal particles once they have passed through the worms isn't yet known, since the protective protein wrappings will degrade over time, the study authors noted.

But experiments suggest the superworms make the metals easier for plants to extract from the soil, Hodson said.

"The earthworms don't necessarily render the metals less toxic, but they do seem to make them available for plant uptake," he said. This raises this possibility of using the earthworms as part of efforts to clean up land contaminated by mining and heavy industry.

(Related: "Microorganism Cleans Up Toxic Groundwater" [April 7, 2004].)

Plant Mining

The long-term aim is to breed and then release the worms at polluted sites to speed up the process of soil development and help kick-start the ecosystem's rehabilitation, Hodson said.

Plants could be used to extract toxic metals once the superworms have got to work, he added.

This in turn could boost the development of methods for using plants to mine metals.

"The goal at the end of the rainbow is that the plants become so efficient at it that you can use them as a source of metal in industrial processes," Hodson said. "So you just crop off the plants and take them to a processing plant."

Peter Kille of the School of Biosciences at Cardiff University in Wales has also been tracking the metal-eating worms.

He said previous studies show it takes earthworms many years to improve polluted soils. While the new superworms should prove a useful tool, even they can't compete with industrial cleanup processes that take one to two years.

The worms, however, are an excellent way to diagnose metal concentrations in contaminated land, Kille said.

"Basically you can see the earthworms as biological dipsticks of the soil toxicity and the metal levels," he said.

And the superworms are perfect subjects for studying evolution in action, Kille added.

"What's really interesting is that each patch of high metal creates a unique evolutionary event," he said. The worms either develop new ways of dealing with the metals or find solutions similar to other populations.

"Each time it happens it's a localized event, and it allows us to study the processes of evolution that create the adaptation," he said.

Here is our Saturday Salsa, and I made another batch today. Zach carried the next batch of nearly ripe tomatoes up from the basement. I'm wondering if I should do something different with them.

I used fifteen cups of peppers for all the salsa, Mom-in-law made twelve stuffed peppers for supper tonight, we chopped and froze thirteen more cups of peppers. That's all $9 worth from the farmers' market!

We visited Great Granddad's farm and the boys had fun finding bugs, batting walnuts with sticks, the usual stuff they do.

Thanks to Freecycle.org I found some red wrigglers. Gabe and Ben came with me for a drive to go and dig them out. It was nice getting out in the "country" (even though the definition changes down here), and now we're set up for vermicomposting again. I almost came home with a bunny, except he's not ready to go until Friday. Hmmm.... now to decide what to do about that.....

It was a cold winter day, when an old man walked out onto a frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice, dropped in his fishing line and began waiting for a fish to bite.
He was there for almost an hour without even a nibble when a young boy walked out onto the ice, cut a hole in the ice not too far from the old man and dropped in his fishing line. It only took about a minute and WHAM! a Largemouth Bass hit his hook and the boy pulled in the fish.
The old man couldn't believe it but figured it was just luck. But, the boy dropped in his line and again within just a few minutes pulled in another one.
This went on and on until finally the old man couldn't take it any more since he hadn't caught a thing all this time.
He went to the boy and said, "Son, I've been here for over an hour without even a nibble. You have been here only a few minutes and have caught about half a dozen fish! How do you do it?"
The boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rrarm."
"What was that?" the old man asked.
Again the boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rarrm."
"Look," said the old man, "I can't understand a word you are saying."
So, the boy spit into his hand and said,

Zgodnie z rozkładem, pierwszy transport produktów IT przejechał ponad 10,000 km koleją z Chin do Niemiec i wjechał dzisiaj do Hamburga w stanie nienaruszonym! Dzięki DB Shenker jedna podróż umożliwiła zmniejszenie emisji CO2 o 2200 ton w porównaniu do transportu lotniczego.

Hans Erbe, Dyrektor ds zarządzania zapleczem logistycznych w Fujitsu Siemens Computers komentuje “Możemy obserwować dokładną pozycję pociągu, a nawet wykryć kiedy poszczególne kontenery przejeżdżają przez łączenia torów. Komponenty i monitory były dobrze zapakowane i bezpiecznie zniosły wszelkie wstrząsy.”
Pociąg w Hamburgu przywitał Bernd Bischoff, przewodniczący i CEO Fujitsu Siemens Computers oraz Norbert Bensel, Przewodniczący DB Shenker i członek zarządu DB Mobility Logistics AG.

Jeszcze dziś pociąg wyruszy do stacji docelowych - monitory mają trafić do europejskiego centrum dystrybucji FSC w Worms, a obudowy do fabryki Fujitsu Siemens Computers w Augsburgu, gdzie składane są PC i serwery. Około 60 procent produkcji Fujitsu Siemens Computers odbywa się w Niemczech.

Most microarray studies of aging animals try to associate gene expression with chronological age: th

Most microarray studies of aging animals try to associate gene expression with chronological age: they look for groups of genes that are upregulated or downregulated as we get older. But chronological age is often an imperfect proxy for the quantity we are really interested in – physiological age, or bodily health, which is notoriously difficult to quantify.

The search is on for informative correlates of physiological age (like telomere length) that can be used to assess current health and predict remaining lifespan. One seemingly relevant quantity that is simple to measure is liveliness: we might expect a sprightly 90 year old woman to look forward to more years of healthy life than a lethargic 80 year old.

In the latest issue of Aging Cell, Golden et al. argue that this kind of behavior is a useful proxy for physiological age, and then show that gene expression can be used to predict behavior:

Age-related behaviors have distinct transcriptional profiles in C.elegans

There has been a great deal of interest in identifying potential biomarkers of aging (Butler et al. 2004). Biomarkers of aging would be useful to predict potential vulnerabilities in an individual that may arise well before they are chronologically expected, due to idiosyncratic aging rates that occur between individuals. Prior attempts to identify biomarkers of aging have often relied on the comparisons of long-lived animals to a wild-type control (Dhahbi et al. 2004). However, the effect of interventions in model systems that prolong lifespan (such as single gene mutations, or caloric restriction) can sometimes be difficult to interpret due to the manipulation itself having multiple unforeseen consequences on physiology, unrelated to aging itself (Gems et al. 2002; Partridge and Gems 2006). The search for predictive biomarkers of aging therefore is problematic, and the identification of metrics that can be used to predict either physiological or chronological age would be of great value (Butler et al. 2004). One methodology which has been used to identify biomarkers for numerous pathologies is gene expression profiling. Here, we report whole-genome expression profiles of individual wild-type Caenorhabditis elegans covering the entire wild-type nematode life span. Individual nematodes were scored for either age-related behavioral phenotypes, or survival, and then subsequently associated with their respective gene expression profiles. This facilitated the identification of transcriptional profiles that were highly associated with either physiological or chronological age. Overall, our approach serves as a paradigm for identifying potential biomarkers of aging in higher organisms that can be repeatedly sampled throughout their lifespan.

In the study, worms are grouped into 3 broad categories based on their behavior: category A if they show "symmetric, spontaneous, and smooth movement, " C if they "only move their nose or tail when prodded," and B for anything in between. Using data from a previous work, Golden et al. show that behavior is a useful proxy for physiological age: C worms have a significantly shorter remaining lifespan than A worms (after controlling for chronological age). In other words, in our search for biomarkers of physiological aging, we should include genes whose expression levels predict behavior - not just those that predict chronological age.

Golden et al. then get on to their main experiment: they measure mRNA expression levels in worms of 7 different ages, and grade the behavior of each worm. Using a machine learning approach, they show that 71% of the time, gene expression levels accurately predict behavior class. Several of the genes that are more highly expressed in inert C worms (versus in active A worms) are involved in amino acid metabolism and/or related to actin – the authors speculate that physiologically old worms might upregulate these genes to try to repair their damaged cytoskeletons.

Their full results are available online in the GEO database (GSE12290) – this should prove a wonderful resource for bioinformaticians, especially as it is only the second full-genome microarray study of aging in the worm.

~~By kenosha Marge

(Editor's Note: I'm also an avid composter and lugged my own "Green Machine" sold by Mercer Country from NJ to NM 8 years ago. It's quietly composting as you read this...GRL)

If you are a concerned citizen of the planet and would like to do your bit in the newly trendy “Going Green” movement there are many things that you can do.

Many of the green schemes are possible only if you have the income of Warren Buffet or Bill Gates. However most of us have to set our sights just a tad lower. And some of us, lower still. I start with garbage.

I compost. I am a fervent composter. This will not get me a place in the Trendy Green Hall of Fame. It makes even some of my nearest and dearest turn up their sensitive noses and go “eeewww”. However composting is one small way that those of us with limited funds and the will to do something, be it ever so small, can do something “Green”. After all, we all have garbage.

Basically composting is taking things you usually throw away and put them someplace where they are allowed to rot. For some folks that may not sound appealing. In fact for most folks that may not sound appealing. Until you fully understand composting at which time you will yell “Eureka” and listen in fascination to my words on composting, or maybe not the Eureka and the yelling part.

Composting means that many of the things you used to haul out to the curb now have a home in the “compost” area in your yard or basement or even in your kitchen. There are some dandy composters available that you can keep in your kitchen and feed table scraps. And they won’t pee on the carpet or bark at night. They will just produce good organic planting soil. Costs run anywhere from $40-50 for a bucket like thingy to the BMW of composters at $400.00 and up.

Got grass clippings? They add nitrogen. Who knew? Why trudge out to the curb with bags of this stuff and then go buy nitrogen for your garden?

However grass clippings alone do not a compost pile make. Just grass clippings will become all squashed together, be slow to “break down” and will soon start to stink. Not a desired outcome. Add some “brown” stuff and your compost will break down and eventually turn into dark rich stuff that looks, feels and smells just like that expensive “organic potting mix” for which you recently paid a small fortune.

Add your coffee grounds to the mix, filter and all. Paper is organic and will break down nicely. This is much better than having it sitting in a garbage bag in a landfill somewhere.

Worms, those industrious little buggers just love coffee grounds. And before you run screaming into the night at the thought of a worm, worms are our friends, my friends. I can see you scurrying for your mouse to click as far away from this lunatic as possible because there is no damn way no damn worm is a friend of yours. A caterpillar maybe, at least they are cute and fuzzy. Worms are just, well, wormy things.

My friends there may be no harder worker in the garden ecosystem than the earthworm. Earthworms are voracious little consumers of organic materials that leave nutrient rich manure called castings in their wake aka known as worm poop.

They work their way through the soil, cycling nutrients between the soil surface and as deep as six feet below. Not bad work for such icky little critters, is it? They work wonders in your compost pile. Not so desired in the kitchen composter though; at least not in my kitchen composter if and when I can afford to buy one.

You don’t have to love worms or bring them home to meet your parents to appreciate them. Running into the occasional earthworm, which I decidedly do not want to touch, is one reason I wear gardening gloves. That and a disinclination to toddle off shopping with black half-moons under my nails that make people regard me as if I haven’t bathed recently or regularly.

Anything that was living at one time is great for compost bins. Think of leaves, vegetables, and grass clippings. Spousal units are not to be considered compost. Even dedicated gardeners on the Police Force will frown upon you and haul your composting butt off to the pokey.

There are dozens of great books about composting and worms. I’ve compiled a short list and have provided some links below.

Just imagine how much fun it would be to give a book on worms as a Christmas present. Some might actually read it and learn. You’ll never know unless you try. And if half the family decides not to talk to you will that be a bad thing?

For the past few days I've been wondering what in the world was so ripe in the garbage that could be making the garage an almost impassable chamber of noxious gas. Time has kind of gotten away on me in the past couple of weeks. I could almost swear that it was about three days ago that I last checked on my poor red wrigglers, though I'm sure in reality it was twice that. Late last night when the fumes just about knocked me off my feet it occured to me to check the worms. Apparently thousands of worms in one small bucket eat up their bedding much too quickly and were left in a slimey, wormy soup. It was a strange site to look in on the usually writhing mass and find them lifeless. And really, terribly smelly. There was the odd movement here and there and I attempted a rescue which by this morning had proved futile. What a shame. I've had those worms (well not those worms exactly, but their ancestors) for six years! They've been so easy to maintain. It's really rather sad that I've killed them all now. And all that labour of harvesting them (about six hours total) so that they could safely travel with us rather than face the perils of the moving van, not to mention that it was about two hundred dollars worth of worms had we attempted to sell some. Now they're gone.

Setting up their bin has been on my mind every day. I even have the newspaper bedding all torn up. The only thing holding me back was that I was going to try something new in the bin to provide some drainage. All I had to do was drill some holes. Lesson learned: setting up worms is high priority after a move. I think next time I'll just stick them - bin and all - on the moving truck!

So now I have to find new worms and I'm hoping that someone who I've given worms to might be able to harvest a half a pound and generously donate them back to me! Thanks in advance.

When any individual plants a garden in his/her backyard or section of grass, we use the fruits and v

When any individual plants a garden in his/her backyard or section of grass, we use the fruits and vegetables in our meals. If we plant a flower garden, it is mainly to aid in relaxation.

Now, when we use the fruits and vegetables, our food tastes so good. We get that “it quality” that melts on our taste buds and we exclaim, “oh and ahs”. This encourages us to branch out our gardening for more of the tougher things to grow. For example: fruit bearing trees. The sense of accomplishment after doing this, just one time, swarms all over. The “Wow”.

You start to remember how your parents, grandparents, or just older people use to talk about rotating what you grow during the season because the soil just used a lot of nutrients. It needs time to “heal”, just like you or me. But it continues to give you encouragement and you expand your garden, even if in the yard or in your house. Exciting!

That is such a pretty picture. However it is a picture that a number of people do not do anymore. The sense of accomplishment does not come from a simple garden, not like it use too. Accomplishment has been redefined. I ask you, at what cost?

People rely heavily on unregulated produce to filter into their local grocery stores. They expect, because it has been demanded, the produce to be of the best quality. As I have said before, our own government has stated that regulations are antiquated.

A few months ago, right before Wall Street started tanking and bottoming out, there was a report. This report let it be known that there were not enough people employed to do proper inspections on the food we eat. OOOO…WEEE… (Note: Just following up as I said I would. And remember you will have a few months where things level off.)

Now let’s see if I can help you, the consumer on these “fine products”, out there being offered. Review the facts:

The government pays farmers across America not to grow fresh produce.

The government gets the major producers of our meats to say they are not using cloned animals in our food supply. Months after, red warning flags were raised. (Also, it involves the cloning wheat, maze, and corn.)

The government admits the loophole of properly inspecting the food being shipped into America.

Yes, fine products indeed. Continuing with the breakdown … ready?

This past season, I got to watch two huge fields, acres, of corn grow. I had waited patiently for the farmer to harvest his crop. That time has come and gone. The fields of corn were never harvested. All of that corn grown and the nutrients from the ground sucked dry. Damn. It was fresh produce. Actual yellow corn!! When you go to the grocery store again, I’m sure you will see what I mean. Yellow corn isn’t so yellow is it?

Now, we have all heard the MANY reports that our water supply is heavily tainted. Heavily! Hell, there was even an outbreak of E. Coli from use of the regular tap water. (By the way, I think that was a test.) Sure if we boil the water, we change the composition of it, thus killing bacteria, and removing our own pollutants, but what about when we water gardens or rinse off our fruits and vegetables?? Anyone stopping long enough to think about that? A direct attack on a weak or strong immune system could be devasting! Not to mention the millions of test you will have to under go at the hospital, from people who practice medicine through trial and error still.

Our genetic make-up is slowly being changed by just those two factors, and when you throw in the cloned meats and/or dairy products, plus other of our own pollutants, who knows what could happen.

The good news is that we will all find out at the same time. Sure we will. It passes off and along to offspring.

How do we avoid killing or seriously damaging our own gardens then?? Recycle. Years ago, I saw my mom do this.

Take a hose and hook it up to your washing machine drainage. When the water from the machine drains, it will (if you have put the hose in your garden) water your plants. How in the world does this help? The detergent is soap. Think about the ingredients to soap. ~~ Neat uh? Also too, if there is a drought, this is a fabulous way to make sure your plants get sufficient water to grow.

Remember to till the soil. It is just another form of irrigation, give or take. If you have indoor plants from the winter. Remember to take the soil from the bucket and put it in your garden. The soil will mix itself and combine and strengthen. This will also give you an idea over time, what will work good in the soil you have. (Work good as in, what will grow.)

Have a good mind to visit your local fishing shack or a place you can get worms too. Worms are great to have in your garden. Grubs are different and attracted to different plants. If you see one, it’s your call if you pick it up and move it - not kill it.

Once you go out to harvest the fruits of your labor, make sure you say “thanks”. Proven study, talking to plants helps them grow - don’t forget that.

Remember too ~ boil some water before you go outside to pick a fruits or vegetables. Let the water sit and come back to room temperature. The accomplishment behind this: health. You have a clean, wow, exciting, healthy, fresh produce to eat.

Tahap selanjutnya disebut propagade.
