With Wrath launching so soon, it’s fairly difficult to come up with a topic that will be interesting to both those who are taking a break until Wrath and those that are still making the most of the current content.

I had started preparing an article on trinkets that provide attack power but then realised that most hunters are probably not as interested in epic gear as to what the expansion holds in terms of new talents, new skills and revisions to current talents and current skills.

I do have some plans to help make sense of all of the Wrath changes but would like to hold those back until the next patch is live. Even at this late stage, tweaks are still being made to the talent trees.

With the above in mind, I’ve decided to take the easy way out by discussing an old talent that will be much the same in Wrath but will, in one important way, also be much changed…

Expose Weakness (EW) is a must for every raiding Survival hunter as it places a powerful debuff on the target that can provide a significant advantage to a raid.

The idea is that every time you land a ranged crit then there is a chance that the EW debuff will be applied to your target. Additional points in EW increase the probability that this debuff will be applied:

1. 1 point = 33% chance of applying EW with every ranged crit
2. 2 points = 66%
3. 3 points = 100%

The EW debuff increases the attack power of all attackers against the target by 25% of the hunter’s agility. It is important to note that “all attackers” means just that – everyone in the raid gains this additional attack power. The effect is not just limited to the hunter’s party.

When applied, EW lasts for 7 seconds. If the hunter lands another crit within 7 seconds, however, it is possible to refresh the effect. But EW does not stack. In fact it doesn’t even stack if there is more than one hunter in the group with points in the EW talent.

How much additional Expose Weakness uptime do I get with each additional talent point?

Okay, so we’ve explored the tooltip but what we really want to know if how much additional  each point of EW provides. The first step to answering this question is to determine what proportion of time the EW effect will be up for.

This is going to be influenced by a number of factors:

1. The number of points spent in EW determines the probability that a crit will result in an EW proc.
2. A hunter with a higher crit rate will land more crits.
3. A hunter with a faster weapon speed will, all other things being equal, land more crits.
4. The shot rotation used by the hunter will also influence the number of crits.

For the remainder of this article, we will assume the following:

1. The hunter uses a weapon with a speed of 2.80 and the only improvement to this will be the 15% quiver/ammo pouch bonus resulting in a final weapon speed of 2.43.
2. The hunter fires either a Multi-Shot or Arcane Shot after every second Steady Shot resulting in a 1.5:1 shot rotation.

The problem with calculating EW’s uptime is that it depends on two random types of events: crits and EW procs. Further complicating the calculation is that any of our Auto, Steady, Multi or Arcane shots can crit and thus lead to an EW but they are not evenly spaced out. Rather, we will have something like:

1. Auto shot
2. Bit of a gap
3. Steady shot
4. Very short gap
5. Arcane shot
6. Very short gip
7. Auto shot
8. Bit of a gap
9. Steady shot
10. Shortish gap
11. Auto shot
12. Bit of a gap
13. Steady shot
14. Very short gap
15. Multi-shot
16. Etc.

So, I put together a spreadsheet that lays out the above shot rotation with all of the correct gaps between shots. For each shot, the spreadsheet then randomly generates two numbers between 0 and 1. The first number will determine the outcome of the shot. That is, is the shot a crit? The second random number will determine whether the crit results in an EW proc.

For example, for a hunter with a crit rate of 25%, if the first number is less than 0.25 then that shot will be regarded as a crit and if that number is greater than 0.25 then the shot is a non-crit. If the shot is a non-crit then we don’t need to look at the second number. But if the first shot is a crit then if, as an example, we have spent two points in EW, then a random number of less than 0.66 will mean an EW proc while a random number greater than 0.66 means no proc.

Once all of the random numbers are generated, the spreadsheet will have a long list of EW procs and the timing of those procs. The final step is then just to add together the total length of time that EW applied for and then divide this by the total time analysed to provide the percentage of time that EW was up for.

One may wonder how this helps us since this figure will only be the percentage for one particular set of random numbers. We may have gotten lucky on that set or unlucky. We solve this problem by rerunning the random numbers many times so that the risk of obtaining a misleading set of random numbers is negligible and then take the average percentage across all runs.

For this exercise, 1 000 runs seems to have produced a credible set of results.

Since the EW coverage percent varies by crit rate and number of talent points spent in EW, the spreadsheet was run across a wide range of crit rates. The results of these runs were as follows:

The following points are worth noting:

1. As expected, as the hunter’s crit rate increases, the EW coverage increases. (Note there are one or two blips in the data where this is not true. This is just due to the random nature of the experiment. Using more than 1 000 runs for each point in the above table would have eliminated this and resulted in smoother curves.)
2. However, each additional crit percentage adds less uptime than the previous one. For example, for the one talent point column, increasing the crit rate from 10% to 11% increases the EW uptime by 1.33% while increasing the crit rate from 49% to 50% increases the uptime by only 1.04%.
3. A similar effect can be seen with regards to increasing the number of talent points spent in EW. At a 25% crit rate, the first point provides 41.11% coverage, the second an additional 25.34% and the final talent point provides an additional 15.21%.

So, how much additional attack power does Expose Weakness provide?

Knowing the percentage of time that EW will be up for is well and good but what we really want to get to is how much additional attack power EW will provide. This is easy to calculate:

Additional attack power = Number of players in raid using attack power x 25% x Hunter’s agility x Percentage EW coverage from table above

When using the above formula, we need to keep in mind that attack power benefits classes that do their damage via physical instead of magical attacks. This includes both ranged and melee physical attacks. For example, hunters, hunter pets, warriors, feral druids and rogues benefit from attack power.

As an example, lets assume that we have 600 agility and we’re in a 25 man raid that includes 10 players that will benefit from attack power. Our raid will gain additional attack power as follows:

Expose Weakness in Wrath of the Lich King

EW is set to be nerfed in Wrath. While this talent currently applies on a raid-wide basis, in future it will only apply to the hunter with the talent. Clearly, this will have a dramatic impact on the attack power provided by EW. If we rework the above table to apply to just one player (i.e. the hunter) we get:
