The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people's heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. Knol will encourage these people to contribute their knowledge online and make it accessible to everyone.

Allow millions of people to freely write up their own thoughts and contribute knowledge. Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah...

You know what Knol is? It's a blogging platform. A hosted, multi-author blogging platform

As Mathew Ingram notes, Knol is compared to Wikipedia and Mahalo. Here's how I'd break down the three services.

• Wikipedia is a wiki
• Mahalo is an editor-controlled links aggregation site
• Knol is a giant blogging site

Wikipedia is a collaborative effort toward creating a single information page. Mahalo is handpicked information created in a top-down fashion by experts. Knol is a bunch of separate blog posts on a given subject.

I Wrote My First Google Knol

To find out more about Google Knol, I decided to write up a knol. My knol is Using FriendFeed to Increase Blog Readership. I took my old post Ten FriendFeed Visitors Beats 1,000 StumbleUpons Any Day, and got rid of the comparisons to StumbleUpon and Digg. The knol focuses on how FriendFeed is actually good for bloggers.

I figured that post was a good one to start with. It got Likes from FriendFeed co-founders Paul Buchheit and Bret Taylor:

The post was also (ironically) quite popular with Stumblers. So I cleaned up the references to other sites and added some things around attention optimization.

Yup, I was ready to rock-n-knol.

Knol = Blogging

The process of creating a knol was really easy:

1. Go to knol.google.com
2. Click on "Write a knol"
3. Sign in with your Google account
4. Start writing

I thought there might be some sort of test to prove my expertise, or some approval period while someone checked my credentials. Nope.  It was just another Google Accounts sign-up.

The process reminded me of signing up for wordpress.com and starting to write. Here's the knol blogging interface:

Once I got in there, it was just like blogging. I wrote my paragraphs. Created section titles. Added graphics.

I did assume a somewhat more professorial tone in the knol than I do here.

Knols Allow Some Wiki-Like Collaboration on Blog Posts

The overall Knol site is not itself a wiki. But there are wiki elements available for individual knols. Three collaboration options are available, set by th author:

1. Wide open editing by anyone who is signed in
2. Moderated editing - all edits must be approved by the author
3. No editing - no one except the author can make changes

So there could be knols that are set up as true community build-out efforts (#1 option above). That's pretty much Wikipedia. The difference is that there may be several knols on a given subject - some by solo authors, some by a group of collaborators. Wikipedia has only a single page per subject.

Knols Allow Comments - Just Like Blogs

People can make comments on your knol. A good discussion can occur around a subject. This is just like a blog.

Knols Allow Ads - Just Like Blogs

An author can elect to allow ads to appear beside the knol. I did this, signing up for Google AdSense for the first time in my life. I don't expect to earn a penny, but I want to see what ads run there.

Blogs, of course, can also have ads.

Knol Includes an Author Profile - Just Like Blogs

When you create your first knol, Google automatically creates a second one for you: your profile page (link to mine). A really nice feature that, again, is a hallmark of blogs (the About page).

Aside from a  bio, the profile page includes a listing of the knols that someone has written.

What's the Difference Between Google Knols and Wordpress.com?

Really, there's no reason the content of knols will differ that much from blogs. I searched for "back pain" on Google Knol and Wordpress.com. Here are two results:

• Google Knol: Low Back Pain
• Wordpress.com: Chronic Pain - Low Back Pain

The knol is the more scholarly of the two. But the wordpress.com blog holds its own in terms of information.

There are two key differences from what I can see:

1. Brand. Knol is branded as an expert/knowledge site. Blogs are that, but also include a lot of opinion and first-person experiences.
2. Ranking. Readers can rate a knol on a 1-5 star scale. These rankings will help the best content emerge at the top of search results.

Google knols may also have better "Google juice" than most blogs. Search Engine Land suspects knols will inherit a Google page rank advantage in search results.

Try Writing a Knol!

For me, writing a knol was a lot less pressure than adding to a Wikipedia entry. It was just like writing a blog post. Now I am conscious of the purpose of knol, and don't expect to fill it with my blog posts. But perhaps over time people will be less wary of adding opnion to knols. From the Gogle blog post introducing Knol:

The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It's their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.

Note the inclusion of opinion in there. Once you open that up, you've fundamentally got blogging. Knol might be good for people who don't want to maintain a full blog, but would love to write a few articles providing knowledge and opinion.

Branding

Defining your blog's uniqueness is difficult but critical. It's what makes your blog memorable.

My personal take on branding is that it is what people think about you, your product or service. It’s about giving the right impression. I don’t know about you but I think a good impression is worth working on. -- Better Blog Branding: What’s In a Name?

Branding, intentional or by default starts during the design and strategy stage because that's when the blogger chooses the niche and lays the foundation for what kind of a site they intend to create. Thereafter branding begins to shift as a reader community develops and evolves it grows. Ultimately, the blogger and the  reader community become co-creators of an ever evolving brand.

Branding is reflected in the keywords and blog description for the site and published on the introductory  About page or Profile page and located by search engines. Your brand includes the style in which the  information is presented and clarifies what readers can expect to be presented with when they come to your site.

When crafting blog posts the better blogger considers:

what is the main message or theme?
who are the readers?
what information is essential?
how can it be organized and most clearly expressed?

The organization of your blog post is an essential part of conveying your message clearly. Clear organized thinking produces clear, logical writing. Some communications problems may be solved by changing words or sentence structure, others involve the way words or thoughts are arranged.

What does your reader most want to know? What is your main message or theme? Decide what information must be included and what can be left out. Then, divide your information into main and secondary points.

Develop a structure for your blog post that will make it easy and enjoyable to use. For example, chronological order might be the most logical approach for describing procedures.

If people already know something about the subject and you are sharing new information, start with the old, then introduce the new.

If you are describing something completely new, start with general information about the objectives or reasons for the new, then deal with the specifics.

Here are a few ways to organize your information:

from general to specific
from specific to general
from positive to negative
step by step
from most important to least important

Flagship Content (Pillar Posts)

In blogging content is king. Every blog needs at least between 4 and 6 pillar posts that identify the your expertise. Pillar posts are longer posts that require research and the contents are of timeless value to your readers. As your blog grows your collection of pillar posts will likewise grow.

A good tip from the readability value and SEO standpoints is to make sure that pillar posts include plenty of links to authoritative and popular external resources. Certain subjects normally contain certain sub sets of subjects. By covering the material comprehensively you give yourself a good article that will rank better in search engines.

Essential SEO Elements Of A Blog Post

Unlike normal web pages, blog posts are easier to create and do not require extensive knowledge of HTML to create a search engine friendly page. All that is requires is a blog application such as WordPress. However, each post still needs to include several SEO elements to help it rank. Assuming you have done your homework and developed a list of keywords and keyword phrases, all that is left is to optimize those keywords for the search engines. (1) Headlines (Titles and Sub-titles): Your title should succinctly state what the contents of the post are. Clever and catchy titles may bring an flush of traffic but they do not continue to deliver readers who are specifically searching for the content that your post has. Use a keyword or keyword phrase  as close to the start of the title as possible. Also use them in sub-titles found throughout the blog post.

From a SEO perspective keywords or keyword phrases can be used throughout the post. However, take note that Google will penalize those who resort to keyword stuffing that diverges from natural flow of the text. From the readers perspective, keep it natural and use key words or keyword phrases only if it's a natural "fit".

(3) URL: Try to incorporate a keyword or keyword phrase into the URL.

(4) Categories and Tags: Categories and tags do not necessarily help you with SEO but  social media sites such as Technorati often rely on tags.

Num momento de (in)sanidade, eu pensei: será que eu consigo dar upload no HTML que eles querem?!
O meu lado racional denunciou que todos os arquivos hospedados no wordpress.com tem endereço semelhante a "http://nomedoseublog.files.wordpress.com/...." e assim vai. Não ia funcionar.

A única forma seria conseguir colocar um arquivo como uma.... página.
Nesse momento tive um insight e pensei: e se eu der o nome da página de "gogle124verificador.html"?

Pois foi exatamente assim que funcionou, amiguinhos.
É simples: se eu digitar http://lafloufa.com/sobre.html o wordpress automaticamente redireciona para a página http://lafloufa.com/sobre

Ou seja, se você criar uma página usando no nome o código que o google te dá, o endereço que o google precisa irá automaticamente ser redirecionado para a página bizarra que você acabou de criar.

Vamos ao passo-a-passo para ficar bem claro.

1- Primeiramente, você deve adicionar seu site ao Google Sitemaps

2- Logo na sequência, o Google Sitemaps vai pedir para você validar a existência desse site, de forma a provar que ele é realmente seu. Para quem tem o domínio e a hospedagem, todas as formas são simples. Mas se você usa o wordpress.com, selecione "upload HTML file".

3-Nessa etapa você deve pegar o nome do html que o google pediu para você fazer upload ("google1288fhjjkgkheh", por exemplo) e criar uma página com ele. Atenção! Precisa ser uma página primária, principal (Main Page).

4- Depois de publicar a sua página, peça para o google verificar. Assim que for verificado, você pode excluir a página sem maiores problemas.

Usuários do Wordpress.com, bem vindos ao Google Sitemaps.

A nuclear explosion occurs as a result of the rapid release of energy from an intentionally high-speed nuclear reaction. Below is 8 examples of this occurrence. Whether it be for testing, or the real the deal.

These shots were taken July 3, 1970, by the French army in the Fangataufa atoll. Codenamed Canopus, it yielded 914 kt. Although this picture, like many of the series, is a work of the French Army (as far as I know) this is an original scan from a hardcopy, as processed to remove dust and scratches.

Operation Upshot-Knothole, conducted at the Nevada Proving Ground between March 17 and June 4, 1953, consisted of 11 atmospheric tests: three airdrops, seven tower tests and one airburst. Upshot-Knothole involved the testing of new theories, using both fission and fusion devices.

House No. 1, located 3,500 feet from ground zero, was completely destroyed on the first day of testing. The elapsed time from the first picture to the last was 2⅔ seconds. The camera was completely enclosed in a 2-inch lead sheath as a protection against radiation. The only source of light was that from the detonation. Frame No. 1 (upper left) shows the house lighted by the blast. Frame No. 2 (upper right) shows the house on fire.

July 1, 1946, in the Marshall Islands: A mushroom cloud erupts in the North Pacific Ocean over the Bikini Lagoon during the first of the two detonations of Operation Crossroads. The series studied the effects of nuclear radiation on large ships, and the United States assembled a fleet of 90 obsolete naval vessels, including a few captured German and Japanese warships, for the test. Several ships can be seen here, silhouetted against the blast.

The Bravo test created the worst radiological disaster in US history. Due to failures in forecasting and analyzing weather patterns, failure to postpone the test following unfavorable changes in the weather, and combined with the unexpectedly high yield, the Marshallese Islanders on Rongelap, Ailinginae, and Utirik atolls were blanketed with the fallout plume along with U.S. servicemen stationed on Rongerik.

Trinity was the first test of technology for a nuclear weapon. It was conducted by the United States on July 16, 1945, at a location 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, on what is now White Sands Missile Range, headquartered near Alamogordo. Trinity was a test of an implosion-design plutonium bomb. The Fat Man bomb, using the same conceptual design, was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, a few weeks later. The Trinity detonation was equivalent to the explosion of around 20 kilotons of TNT and is usually considered as the beginning of the Atomic Age.

BADGER was a 23 kiloton tower shot that was fired on April 18, 1953 at the Nevada Test Site, as part of the Operation Upshot-Knothole nuclear test series.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear attacks at the end of World War II against the Empire of Japan by the United States at the order of U.S. President Harry S. Truman on August 6 and 9, 1945. After six months of intense firebombing of 67 other Japanese cities, the nuclear weapon “Little Boy” was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on Monday, August 6, 1945, followed on August 9 by the detonation of the “Fat Man” nuclear bomb over Nagasaki.

The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki by the end of 1945, roughly half on the days of the bombings.

Taken 1 millisecond after detonation, showing the “Rope Trick” The spikes seen at the bottom of the detonation are caused by thermal radiation (approx 20,000 degrees Kelvin, 3 1/2 times hotter than the surface of the sun) vaporizing cables that held the device in place. This is known as the “Rope Trick”

The mottling effect seen on the surface of the fireball is caused by clumps of vaporized bomb debris, traveling at several tens of kilometers/second, hitting the back of the slower expanding fireball.
