The first is on Home Server Hacks with the cheapest money can buy budget build, which works out at only $379. Whilst We Got Served has a money's no object, maxed out build that cost a staggering $1033.40. Wow!

Computer Shopper has tested the Hi-Grade Home-serv 2000 and have given it a dismal 2 out of 5 stars.

Why just 2 stars?

Size, too big as it is the same size as a standard midi-tower PC, noise. It's noisy being one of the loudest computers Computer Shopper had tested and file transfers were very sluggish at copying large files and remarkably slow at transferring small files.

You can read the full review here.

Inc.).

I’ve neglected this project for a while mainly due to me being so busy with other stuff.

The hiatus has actually done the project good as feature creep was threatening to de-rail the thing the last time I had a look at it.

So I’ve cleaned up the requirements for the data to be stored locally. I’ve eliminated just about everything I can pull from SmugMug leaving me with a nice, clean object model to work with.

I was also struck by the fragmenting of the project into three – scheduled, service and WHS Console Add-in.

While this seems logical, it is a bit over the top. So I’m dropping the scheduled uploader and having uploads handled by the service.

Work is progressing nicely and I hope to have a working service app soon ( if not a console add-in).

I’m now using the SmugMugAPIWrapper from Codeplex. Its MIT Licenced so WHS2SugMug will have to be too. This library is one that I can actually use without looking at the source as its built to use the current SmugMug API, so no worries there.

As with my Windows Live Writer add-in, I’ll host the project on Codeplex as soon as there is a release-ready codebase.

Windows expert Ed Bott writes about special-purpose consumer devices on ZDNet:

Windows Media Center is mature and extremely well supported. It wouldn’t be that difficult to port the Media Center code to a next-generation operating system that could then form the basis for cool, quiet PCs that could form the hub of a household digital media system. In fact, a device like HP’s MediaSmart Server, which currently runs Windows Home Server, could combine Media Center and backup functions into a single box and would probably run better without the unnecessary overhead of Windows components it doesn’t use.

So, what do you reckon? Would it be a good idea to combine Windows Home Server and Media Center as one product? Leave your thoughts below.

Beta 3 of the add-in TV Manager is now available. Designed for both WHS and Media Center, it copies your recordings off to your WHS for storage and management. It comes in two parts. Part one, is installed on the server for management of the Recordings. Part two, is the Media Center (Vista only) plug-in that copies new recordings over to the WHS deleting the original. It also allows you to watch the recordings like you normally would via 'recorded tv'.

Fixes:

Added support for French installations of Windows Home Server. (Used to be a problem with the spelling of Videos)

Fixed the Media Center Scheduler service going bonkers. (Modified how the service is changed to run under the current user instead of LocalSystem)

Fixed the Problem downloading Guide data bug. (Was a result of changing the account the scheduler service ran under. Fixed by changed the permissions on first run of the client)

New Features:

Added logging to the TV Manager client. (You'll get a dialog box telling you to check the event log with the TV Manager category)

Automatically loads and refreshes the data for the TV Manager Console Tab.

Exit context menu shows up when right clicking the client icon in the system tray.
