It means that I wind up passing along links to open stories in the media written by outsiders who wind up getting an early story (mostly) right, through good solid reporting and insightful addition skills, i.e. 2+2=4.

I faced that several months ago when Live Mesh was in the batter's circle, before its public announcement; I wrote what I could because I was so impressed with the technology and approach, as were the reviews after its unveiling.  Before, I wrote this post among others; and after the announcement I wrote this one. 

Same scenario now, with "Windows 7."  You don't have long to wait (October 27) for the public announcement, but if you're curious about some of the technical approaches, there are several generally reliable bloggers already writing about "technical details" of the multi-touch, parallel-processing, and cloud-services S+S integration points in the new release. A couple of good quick examples are Mary Jo Foley, "Windows 7 to Get Parallel Processing Tweaks" (she's not as snarky as usual) and TechRadar's "Seven Things You Need to Know about Windows 7").

In arrivo la pre-beta di Windows 7
Dopo numerosi rumors, giungono le prime conferme: nel corso della prossima Professional Developers Conference di ottobre, Microsoft rilascerà agli sviluppatori una prima pre-beta di Windows 7. Il nuovo sistema operativo sostituirà Vista nel 2010

Microsoft have already stated that deep-level changes between Vista & Windows 7 will be get to a minimum as a way to ensure driver and application compatibiity; and if they pull it off,  Windows 7 will have a much better start to life than poor old Vista :-)

The downside to this is that they can't play around with Win32 (Windows Core) too much, and that is going to limit what can be down with regards to Parallel Processing. However, at this year's PDC (Professional Developers Conference), there is a session entitled "Parallel Symposium: Addressing the Hard Problems with Concurrency" and the session decription contains the phrase "Hear about the key architectural changes Microsoft is making to Windows to enable the efficient execution of parallel software.", which shows the Redmond giant has clearly got something up it's sleeve.

USB 3.0 specifications were released in August 2008. The upgraded specs call for enhanced throughput of up to 4.8GB per second, reduced power consumption, and backwards compatibility. The newer USB 3.0 cables are much thicker to accommodate the additional wire pairs (channels) needed to move data. Blue-Ray DVD

The format war is long dead and Blue-Ray DVD burner prices are reasonable. Prices range from $200.00 to $600.00 and enable users to store 25GB on a single density disk or 50GB on a double density disk. See the Newegg.com price list for additional details.

SSD Hard Drives

While solid state technology remains more expensive than conventional magnetic disks, advances in SSD technology are reducing costs and continue to increase speeds. Advantages to SSD include a lack of moving parts, higher access speeds, less power consumption and lower heat. Disadvantages include newer untested technology, higher costs, and smaller sizes. Windows 7

While information about Microsoft’s newest operating system remains sketchy. One notable new feature of Windows 7.0 is mutitouch technology. Mutitouch enables users to use multiple touch points on the screen to navigate, manipulate and create data. Windows 7 is expected to be released sometime in 2010.  Microsoft Cloud OS

On October 1^st 2008 Steve Ballmer released information that Microsoft will release its Cloud OS sometime later in the month. While he was short on details he was quick to explain that Windows Cloud OS and Windows 7 are completely different projects. Windows Cloud OS is expected to be some combination of Windows Live Services that will compete similar to Google’s application suite. More information can be found at PCWorld.

E proprio mentre fervevano i preparativi per l’imminente scomparsa di XP, ecco che arriva un’altra smentita. Windows Xp sarà disponibile fino al 31 Luglio 2009. Ma attenzione, ciò non vuol dire che potrete acquistarlo tranquillamente nei negozi, ma che sarà fornito solo con l’acquisto di un Pc nuovo o attraverso il downgrade da Vista.

Microsoft ha anunciado que el famoso downgrade de Windows Vista hacia XP se alargará hasta el 31 de Julio de 2009. Aunque en esta fechas estaría en vísperas de los lanzamientos (probablemente betas públicas) del hasta ahora "Windows 7".

Aunque la medida no modifica la actual política de venta de licencias para equipos precargados, sí beneficia a los consumidores quienes han decidido utilizar XP en sus equipos debido a las quejas de rendimiento de Vista, esto incluye a los fabricantes de hardware en un intento de estandarizar su certificación frente a Redmond.

Por lo que, si no te urge tener que usar a Vista como último recurso, puedes esperar un poco más de tiempo antes de hacer el brinco hacia Windows 7 sin tener que pasar por el.

Esto del “downgrade” es un buen negocio para Microsoft y sus socios, los ensambladores de equipos. Los fabricantes pueden ofrecer el sistema que prefieren los clientes y Microsoft a cambio se anota una muesca más, como copia de Vista vendida....
En principio el nuevo plazo llegaría hasta el 31 de julio de 2009 y quizá más allá, según The Register, citando correos internos de los OEM, con el objetivo de pasar directamente de XP a Windows 7.

I kid, I kid. Recently I came across Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows. Sounds kinda boring, doesn't it? That is exactly what I was thinking. Fortunately for us, this guy has a little more to offer than ultra-high-level nerd talk about IE scripts and Windows Server 2008 bug fixes and things like that.

Truth is, he knows a little more about Windows Seven than the rest of us. Click on that link. Really. Pull a Nike and just do it. It will take you to one of his more recent posts, a bunch of slides from a recent presentation he gave about Microsoft's upcoming OS. It has the most in-depth, detailed information I've found to-date. As is mentioned in that post, however, most of it will be old news in the next month or so. Microsoft is distributing a beta of Windows Seven to attendees of PDC and WinHEC, two of their conferences that take place in Los Angeles. Maybe someone will break the rules and upload a torrent of it... I can hope.

I enjoy my job and have always appreciated how well you manage me. As you know, I don’t ask for much. I am a humble employee with simple needs, and I would like to attend Microsoft’s Professional Developer’s Conference in Los Angeles, October 27th-30th.

Wait! Before you respond, let me explain. This is not the typical conference that is more boondoggle than substance. The PDC (which is what the kids on Facebook call it) is where the best and brightest come together with the technical geniuses of Microsoft.

The PDC is where the speakers are not marketing folks, but actual developers and technologists who build the products. Remember those tough questions about Microsoft tools we had last week that we could not find an answer to? Well, I will have an opportunity to talk directly to the product team from Microsoft. In fact, one night they all gather in one place where I can ask all the questions we ever had and get real answers! And business cards!

But it isn’t just the speakers; it’s the other attendees. These are some of the smartest folks using the same tools and technologies we are. I can learn a lot from them and see how they have overcome issues we have run into. I keep reading the blogs (on my own time, of course) and everyone says that networking is one of the top reasons to attend.

I promise I won’t come home empty handed. I just read that they are making Windows 7 available to attendees! We will be able to get a first look at the operating system before everyone else. They are also are giving out a hard drive, called The Goods with all kinds of bits and bytes on it that we can use. Plus, I will come back with a ton of business cards.

Finally, I will come back inspired. The PDC is where Microsoft lays out its future strategy. You had the most spectacular idea yesterday about how we need to be a little more cutting-edge. By going to the PDC, I will see the technology roadmap for Microsoft and come back with ideas how we can make your genius idea a reality.

Ajuste o horário de verão no Windows

O Horário de Verão 2008/2009 tem início à zero hora (00h00) do dia 19 de outubro de 2008, quando os relógios deverão ser adiantados em uma hora nas regiões Sul, Sudeste e Centro-Oeste, conforme pode ser verificado no site do Ministério de Minas e Energia.

Até este ano, o Brasil não possuía um Horário de Verão estático e as datas de início e término mudavam a cada ano, dificultando a atualização automática do sistema. A partir de 2009 o Horário de Verão passará a ter datas fixas, como pode ser observado neste decreto do Ministério de Minas e Energia. Entretanto, para este Horário de Verão 2008/2009 as alterações ainda precisam ser feitas manualmente.

Com o propósito de evitar transtornos para você, a Microsoft se antecipou a possíveis problemas que possam ocorrer e oferece aqui dicas de como fazer alterações manuais para refletir corretamente as datas de início e término do Horário de Verão no seu computador.

Neste ano, as datas de início e fim do Horário de Verão para o fuso horário (GMT -3:00) Brasília no Windows são as seguintes:

• O horário de verão começa à 00:00 do domingo, 19 de outubro de 2008.

• O horário de verão termina às 00:00 do domingo, 15 de fevereiro de 2009.

Importante:

• Siga os procedimentos de instalação do hotfix contidos nesta página, pois a Microsoft não recomenda a atualização manual no Windows.

Como característica sobresaliente podemos decir que está siendo creado bajo el Kernel Minwin, el cual además de tener un consumo mínimo de recursos (25MB en disco y 40MB en memoria) posibilitaría la integración de un núcleo modular con conexión a redes integrada, pero sin necesidad de ejecutar una GUI (interfaz grafica de usuario) tan compleja como en Windows Vista. Con esto me refiero a que si los pronósticos son ciertos podríamos contar con dos versiones de Windows 7, una dedicada al usuario común en el cual reine la interfaz grafica atractiva, y otro con una interfaz mínima lo cual le proporcionaría a los usuarios con PC modestas poder ejecutar este sistema operativo sin morir en el intento.

Deteniéndonos un poco en la interfaz grafica en todo su potencial, podemos decir que esta será multitáctil al igual que el tan impresionante Surface, del cual dejo a continuación un video a modo de demostración:

Entre lo más destacado se podría nombrar a la integración total de Windows 7 y la ya famosa “nube” de información. Para los que se preguntan a que se refiere todo el mundo cuando habla del cómputo en la “nube”, es el acceso a todos nuestros datos y aplicaciones desde la Web en cualquier parte del mundo sin necesidad de llevar nuestra PC con nosotros.

A su vez, Windows 7 poseerá todas las conexiones integradas a través de Live Mesh ( ya presentado en la web 2.0 Expo) , el cual permite compartir y sincronizar carpetas de una forma totalmente nueva, además de la posibilidad de conocer el estado en línea de nuestros contactos y sincronizar aparatos móviles con la PC. Este aspecto junto con una nueva sincronización mucho más poderosa con los celulares ha sido muy remarcado por el propio Bill Gates.

Disculpen que no haya agregado mas informacion pero la proporcionada por Microsoft ha sido muy escasa, igualmente espero que les sea de utilidad.

A lot of though is going into Windows 7, hopefully the engineering teams will have more say than the marketing team on what ends up in the final release.

Steve Ballmer has revealed a few details of a forthcoming operating system that will help developers write Internet-based applications.

Within a month, Microsoft will unveil what Ballmer called "Windows Cloud." The OS, which will likely have a different name, is intended for developers writing cloud-computing applications, said Ballmer, speaking in London to an auditorium of IT managers at a Microsoft-sponsored conference.

Ballmer was short on details, saying more information would spoil the announcement. Windows Cloud is a separate project from Windows 7, the OS Microsoft is developing to succeed Windows Vista.

Ballmer was quick to point out that Microsoft doesn't envision products such as the Office productivity suite to move entirely off desktop PCs and onto the Internet.

But Microsoft is working on a service that would let people do "light editing" of Office documents at places such as a public Internet kiosk, Ballmer said.

"That's all I can say on that," Ballmer said. "Otherwise, we have no drum-roll announcement in a month."

Has it been Microsoft all along planting stories about cloud computing? Has all this been a successful PR stunt?

Are we witnessing yet another Microsoft-climbs-on-board-the-second-bus?

I previously weighed in on my opinion on cloud computing and very little has emerged to change my mind so far. I recently tried gOS v3 codename Gadgets which is the lightweight Linux distribution formally its own flavour based on the Enlightenment DR13 window manager and I am not that impressed. I found the integration between Google services (presented via barely concealed HTML widgets) and the operating system felt very amateurish. This coupled with the fact that version 3 is based on the more feature rich Gnome window manager, any assertion of this being a 'stripped down', light weight operating system for 'netbooks' sounds rather strained.

I do not doubt that one day, a certain percentage of desktops and laptops will be light weight (or thin client) systems accessing storage, applications and processing power from a 'mothership' in much the way cloud computing is evolving now. However it seems to make much more sense for a family or household or even a group of people to buy a central 'home server'. This will however be very different to Windows Home Server and will resemble more the old style dumb terminals where multiple clients connect to one central machine.

Well that is my prediction, we will talk in ten years! For now, long live monster power rigs! :) As a final note, it will be interesting to see where Apple fit into this in the coming years. iSlim? iWeb? iJot?
