I finished up to the last available season of 'Entourage'. In the grand scheme of thing it's a horribly recycled plot of getting movies and not getting movies, but it's so well written that you don't seem to notice. Quite frankly watching all the seasons just for Jeremy Piven/Ari and a lesser note Johnny "Drama" Chase was so worth it.

Speaking of worth it... exported Vodka with 50% booze content instead of the normal 40%. In fact, I think I need to water this one down...

The more time passes to more I miss the good ol' USA. I miss the normal people, I miss women watching (sorry babe, you're still hot), I miss the beer, I miss camping, I fucking miss my friends...

I had my very first OTI (Ordnance Technical Inspection) today. A Senior Chief Gunnersmate and Chief Warrat Officer/ Gunner did my inspection. The Ordnance program onboard the boat I'm on hadn't been evaluated since '06 and it was a disaster when we got here. Thankfully due to hardwork on myself and Scott's part we did what we could. We inspected ourselves earlier and got "gigged" on what we knew we were going to get hit on and it wasn't a surprise to me or the command. My MK38 25mm machine gun is a mess and the inspection crew brought it up to the skipper like everyone else has, to no avail. At least I know I have people on my side realizing I'm doing the maintenance on the weapon as best I can. It felt good to get the inspection done and over with, I was a nervous wreck. Now I have a worklist, and I plan on leaving this shop the best I can make it before I leave, and that is satisfying.

Quanto mais você bebe, mais difícil fica. Eu comecei com 2 copos de cerveja, claro. Vi que já era meio difícil, mas consegui 98% de acerto. Aí tomei um vinho (tá, que bichisse, mas eu queria acertar a mira, pô!) e acertei 95%. Aí voltei pra cerveja e acertei 85%. Resolvi avacalhar e tomei as 3 doses de vodka. Acertei 77%. Pra fechar, cerveja de novo. Fiz 63% e desisti. Quase ataca a tendinite. Isso porque nem tenho.

De qualquer forma, segue a dica pra vocês que estão perdendo essas tardes ensolaradas, enquanto eu me delicio na banheira que eu coloquei na laje.

- Como não haverá mesas ou lugares marcados, decore alguns pontos estratégicos com flores.Ou com latas de lixo bem grandes!

- Grave um ou mais cds e deixe tocando bem baixo enquanto acontece a recepção.Ou mande todo mundo levar um Ipod carregado de Madonna e George Michael e estoure os ouvidos dos novos vizinhos.

- Para beber sirva vinho, ou whisky ( opcional), ou bebidas sem alcool, como refrigerantes e sucos de fruta.Ou deixe garrafas de vodka, sagatiba e cervejas a disposição da galera.

- Há quem prefira fazer convites, ter música ao vivo e contratar garçons. Eu prefiro convidar pelo fotolog e pelo e-mail, cantar as 4 e meia da manhã e pedir pra galera jogar a latinha fora amassada.

(ou seja, uma festa sem igual, por isso esperada durante o ano todo).

So many cocktails are created with the foundation of vodka, rum, tequila, gin and sometimes whiskies.  Often we forget about aperitifs, wine and champagne.  Below are a few cocktails which incorporate a variety of spirits.  Each blend is unique, combined in such a way to allow the individual character to shine through while building off the talents of each other.

La Rosa

Flatiron Lounge, Manhattan (Julie Reiner)

2 Strawberry Slices

1/2 ounce Simple Syrup

2 ounces Blanco Tequila (try Partida)

1 ounce Amaro (try Averna)

3/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1-1/2 ounces chilled Rose Champagne

1 edible Pansy (optional)

 

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the strawberry slices with the simple syrup.  Add ice and the tequila, Amaro and lemon juice and shake well.  Strain into a white wine glass, top with Champagne and garnish with the pansy.

Heights Cobbler

Jack the Horse Tavern, Brooklyn, NY

1/2 Lemon Wheel

1/2 Orange Wheel

6 Fresh or Thawed Frozen Cranberries

2 Pineapple Spears (1 peeled)

2 ounces Ruby Port

1/2 ounce Grand Marnier

2 dashes Bitters (Fee’s)

 

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the lemon and orange wheels with 3 cranberries and the peeled pineapple.  Add ice and port, Grand Marnier and bitters and shake well.  Strain into an ice filed rocks glass; garnish with 3 cranberries and the unpeeled pineapple spear.

Amer Mousseux

Bouchon, Yountville, CA

1 ounce Cynar

1/2 ounce Campari

1/2 ounce Fresh Orange Juice

3 ounces Chilled Champagne

1 Orange Twist

 

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.  Add the Cynar, Campari and juice and shake well.  Strain into a chilled flute, top with the Champagne and garnish with the twist.

Paris Sunset

CAV, Providence

3/4 ounce Dubonnet Rouge

3 drops Angostura Bitters

1-1/2 teaspoon sugar

3 ounces chilled Champagne

 

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.  Add the Dubonnet, bitters and sugar and shake well.  Strain into a chilled flute and top with Champagne.

Ice Wine Martini

Blue Martini, Birmingham, MI

10 large seedless Green Grapes (plus 2 halved for garnish)

2 ounces Ice Wine

2 ounces Ciroc Vodka

In a blender, puree the 10 whole grapes with the ice wine and vodka.  Pour the puree through a tea strainer into an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake well.  Strain again into a large chilled martini glass and garnish with the grape halves.

The cocktail recipes above were taken from Food & Wine Cocktails 2005, Food & Wine Cocktails 2006, and Food & Wine Cocktails 2008.  All are excellent sources for distinctive, cutting edge cocktails across the United States within the given year.  These books may be found online or at local bookstores.

When in San Fran last year, Suzanne suggested that I look up Susan's address and drop by to say g'day. I did. Unfortunately she was still interstate or overseas at the time. Not during this trip though. Susan is just such a beautiful person at heart and one of the kindest, most thoughtful people I can recall meeting - and yes, this impression is one that is very quick to become recognised upon spending some time with her. Javier should count his blessings over and over, and any man should only ever hope to meet a woman with similar personal attributes...anyhoo, I digress.

After a somewhat hectic Saturday morning in getting ready to bail on my hotel in the stix (i.e. halfway between work in San Jose and San Fran), my first task was to help Suzanne source 30 limes (limon verdure to some) for the drinks at the wedding dinner later that day. Should anyone need limes in San Francisco, Safeway at Bay Street have an abundance of them at US$0.30c each.

Next task was to grab some coffee and brunch. We spotted a pretty cool looking cafe

Sadly a cool looking cafe is all it was IMO. Not only were they out of bagels (on a Saturday - sacre bleu), however the multi grain toast was anything but grainy, and the double espresso too hot, too long a shot, and tasted like disgusting. I could muster two or three small sips before leaving the remains. I would happily take the house brown and water from Judy's the previous Saturday, over this stuff. And this coffee initially started with crema. And the omelette Suzanne had dished up looked like the dogs breakfast and one that the dog said "no thanks" to. Again, points to Judy's for a far better result.

So on to the main event. Arrived at the church - which doubled downstairs as the function area - and dropped off the limes to the barman Drago. He was a pretty cool chap. Seeing as we were there early, Drago and I shared a couple of shots of Vodka as a starter. We couldn't determine what brand the vodka was, it was just a large, pyramid shaped bottle with minimal blue print and a blue lid. It was without doubt the weakest Vodka I have ever had. Usually two shots in close time gives me a hit of the non caffeinated kind. This stuff did nothing. Zilch. Not even a slight feeling of light headedness.

The church (Serbian Orthodox) was small and quite pretty. Almost typically same to the many other Orthodox churches I have seen, just with lesser smatterings of gold plating and gilding than the Greek Orthodox churches I have seen quite a number of. Susan and Javier were dressed to the nines and looked like the bees knees.

The ceremony itself was lovely and had a few moments of unexpected humour from the bride, groom and priest. Certainly lent to the occasion that much more and will be one ceremony that will stand out for me as a result.

The dinner was a curious (but not in that sense of the word) affair as it started soon after the wedding given that most folk just had to walk around to the side of the church and use the function room entry. All of a one minute walk. Most folk were already well tucked into the juice within seconds of walking in. Service staff had trays of plum schnapps in abundance and suggesting that folks drop that stuff like it were shots. Now depending on who one listens to, there is a different manner in which Schnapps should be imbibed. A older Serbian guest who I had been chatting to a bit prior to the ceremony told me that the correct way to drink it was slowly, to savour the drink, as this is the Serbian way to drink it; whereas the incorrect way was the Bosnian way in dropping it like a shot. Clearly she had marked out that the waitress was Bosnian. Somehow I don't think I will use this logic at any future Serbian wedding.

More interesting to this was the "dessert" table as there was literally one at the back of the room with the huge three tiered cake atop, and trays and trays of the other desserts - a range of sweets, cakes, macaroon type thingies etc. It was interesting as there were two tables of folks who had already started drinking

coffee after raiding the desserts....PRIOR to dinner actually being served! So what do some of the folks (including me) do? We raid the table as well and start chowing down on some sweets before the savoury too, much to the displeased looks from one of the waitresses. This same waitress gave our table a similar look when someone asked for extra potatoes during the dinner service, as they were delicious and sadly not enough to service 10 folks per table. If you don't ask, you don't get. We got. Perhaps some remorse too afterwards? ;-)

Three touching speeches later, there was much dancing afterwards and much more merriment to boot.

The worst part of the night though was trying to get home from that location - I defy anyone to find a taxi en masse (or for that fact, at all) around Turk and Baker Streets towards midnight and after that time. Calls to a taxi company yield zero results, so the best option after nearly an hour waiting after all the key parties have left, is to ask for a ride from Drago. And he even refused the offer of compensation for going out of his way. Thankfully with much coaxing, he did accept our monetary gratitude on top of our many thanks.

A lovely event and night to end this trip to San Francisco, however it was a week that promised so much time at the start, delivered so much happiness by the end, and pissed off way too quickly. The realisation of having to say goodbye again to Suzanne was not pleasant, however will see where my travels next year take me. I never know these days where I will end up and would not have expected my follow on trip from San Fran to have ever happened, at least not at this point in time.

MICHIGAN-AREA MIXOLOGISTS COMPETE FOR CHANCE TO
REPRESENT THE U.S. IN INTERNATIONAL FINALS

WHAT:
Michigan's 11th Annual Finlandia Vodka Cup regional competition

WHO:
Master mixologists, media and guests

WHEN:

7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

WHERE:

WHY:
The best mixologists in Michigan will compete for one-coveted spot in the U.S. Finlandia Shake Off on November 10 in Colorado Springs. The mixologist that wins the Shake Off will represent the U.S. in the 11th Annual International Finlandia Vodka Cup Finals in Finland in early February. During the Finals, the U.S. representative will compete against more than 25 bartenders from around the globe in Finlandia’s arctic homeland.

So Saturday evening was spent drinking wine and playing Guitar Heroes and Mario Kart on the Wii. Excellent fun.

We headed home after brunch on Sunday as my sister Wendy was coming up for a visit with my other 2 nieces. They arrived early evening so we just chilled with yet more wine.

Alan left for Angola on Monday morning. So after I dropped him at the airport, we all walked along to the Ceramic Experience for a spot of cermamic painting. The kids painted animals and I painted a butter dish and a cow to go on top. The kids were tired after a late night so on Monday, they all just chilled with a DVD then bed, while Wendy and I...you got it...drank more wine. Once that was finished we moved on to the vodka. Only problem was that we didn't have any cranberry juice or other suitable mixers so we found some cherry coke in the fridge and used that. Got to say it was genius, pure genius!

Today we went to the beach. Well the amusements at the beach as opposed to the sandy stuff with the water. It was actually really fun. Heather and Charlotte, being that bit older, were tall enough to go on the rollercoaster by themselves. We took them on the ghost train, the chairoplanes, the bumpy slide and finished off with the log flumes. It should be noted that Wendy somehow managed to avoid the log flume as she'd just been on the chairoplanes and was feeling a little green!

They headed back home late afternoon. So me and the kids have the rest of the week to amuse ourselves. Alan's parents are coming up on Friday to look after Hamish while me and Heather go to ABBA The Show!!! Stay tuned for a report on what's certain to be a fab night!

Okay, I'm in a difficult situation. I walk around all day, I study in my classes for my upcoming exams, I'm generally a good boy. I even refrain from scorning Hale boys with expensive glasses and ear-cleaning surgical operations that don't pay any attention to any news about my front tooth, and require multiple encounters with me to realise I'm missing a goddamn tooth, and require me to REPEAT the same story for the nth fucking time to them in anything less than a jovial disposition.

Suffice to say, I've taken to just saying very clearly, "BICYCLE" and going about my righteous business.

BUT THIS IS NOT THE POINT OF MY TALE. I walk around all day, being a very busy bee, writing and thinking and sitting, only to have someone come up to me and say:

"Blair you smell! What is that?"

For the life of me, I couldn't answer them. Starting with a stern resolve to be accountable for a possible stench, I went through a myriad of thoughts in the space of two seconds, finally settling on the conclusion that the person accusing me of an unruly odour must obviously be an idiot, and should be told so.

"You're an idiot."

They screw up their face and go about fulfilling whatever bullshit life goal they think Hale can offer them. Cross-breeding cows and iguanas or something.

It was not until I obeyed the commands of my faithful bowels that I discovered the source of my uncouth ability to stimulate one's olfactory senses in a way unlike any other. There on my lovely blue underpants, surrounding the crease my arse-crack folded ever so kindly was an earnest patch of sweat.

Rag Magazine Presents: Dan Aykroyd & Crystal Head Vodka

Dan Aykroyd speaks about Crystal Head Vodka with Sharpie in hand during what appears to be a signing at the Blue Martini in Miami, Florida.  He also talks enthusiastically about his involvement in the wine business and links to Patron.  Dan refers to Crystal Head Vodka as a “pure spirit, created in the spirit of enlightenment.”  It is like old time moonshine; dry with a creamy under taste to it.  It drinks like a grappa.  He claims it will leave one with no hangover, but insists it is not for college kids.  Whether it is due to the spirit itself or the price of the vodka, I’m not certain.  But he says it is very expensive retailing for roughly $50 a bottle.  The thought that went into this vodka was to do something very different.  It is one step away from organic. 

The interviewer posts that Dan Aykroyd is “a class gentleman and a great interview.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Pink is in the air.  How fitting that I should be reviewing Pinky Vodka shortly.  I sampled it this weekend.  You are in for a treat.  Pinky pampers the taste buds with whimsical charm and extraordinary flavor.  This of course is not the review of Pinky Vodka, but rather a gathering of a few delicious pink concoctions to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month on The Intoxicologist Is In. 

 

Below are a few mixed drinks from cocktail lounges, restaurants and bars around the United States using some of my favorite spirits.  Try out these remakes of time-honored favorites and completely over the top inventive creations.  You won’t find a traditional pink Cosmopolitan in this bunch. 

 

Kir-Tini

From Diamond Head Grill in Honolulu

1-1/4 ounce Chardonnay

1-1/2 teaspoon Crème de Cassis

1 – 2 ounces chilled Champagne

Lemon Twist

 

Fill a cocktail shaker two thirds full of ice.  Add Chardonnay and Cassis.  Shake well.  Strain into a chilled martini glass.  Top off with Champagne and garnish with lemon twist.

Bubbletini

From Roppongi in LaJolla, California

1-1/2 ounce vodka (Try Ketel One)

1-1/2 ounce Peach Schnapps

1/2 teaspoon Chambord

1-1/2 teaspoon Fresh Lemon Juice

2 – 3 ounces Champagne

Lemon Twist

 

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.  Add vodka, schnapps, Chambord and lemon juice.  Shake well.  Strain into a chilled martini glass and top with Champagne.  Garnish with lemon twist.

From MidCity Cuisine in Atlanta

1 ounce Ciroc Vodka

1/2 ounce Grand Marnier

1-1/2 ounce Elderflower Syrup

2 ounces Chilled Rose Champagne

1 small bunch Champagne Grapes, frozen

 

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.  Add the Ciroc Vodka, Grand Marnier and elderflower syrup.  Shake well.  Strain into a chilled martini glass.  Top with Champagne.  Garnish with frozen grapes.

Fahrenheit 5

From Degrees in Washington, D.C.

3/4 ounce Coconut Rum

3/4 ounce Grand Marnier

1-1/4 ounce Cranberry Juice

3/4 ounce Pineapple Juice

Splash of chilled Sprite

 

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.  Add the rum, Grand Marnier and fruit juices.  Shake well.  Strain into a chilled martini glass and top with Sprite.

Simply Pink

Intoxicologist

2-1/2 ounces Pinky Vodka

1/4 ounce Simple Syrup

Garnish with a Pink Ribbon around the stem

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.  Add Pinky Vodka and simple syrup.  Shake.  Strain into a chilled martini glass.  Garnish with pink ribbon.  Sip contentedly.

So. I'm multi-coloured today. Literally so, and I'm not even referring to my rainbow stack of bangles. My skin is a grand mix of reds, yellows, blues and blacks today. Oh wait, there's a bit of purple on my knee, too. Not quite sure where that came from, but there you go. Multi-coloured.

Spent the weekend away at what will remain an undisclosed destination with my friends - Ms. Malibu Mango, The Absolut Twins and their herd of Red Bulls, and a certain Mr. Walker.

Got completely shit-faced (No. More. Whisky. Please. Never again!), puked my intestines out, got madly sunburnt, smoked much too much, got my hands bruised and battered, talked a lot of shit, watched cartoons, bunged up my knee somewhere along the line, passed out...

That's not too bad, I think. Not as bad as the person who made a hobby of collecting bites, or the person who can't even recall leaving half his guts and a half-digested prawn in the bathroom sink...

It was yesterday, 11th, when the transformer went off at near about 6 p.m. Since then no workers were brought to fix the electricity and why rectors would care for when they have set up a back-up for their homes! OK that's not what really matters. What is the heart of the matter is what we did........

Yesterday after the plan failed a bit, we still managed to go for shopping. Even though we all did not have good cash, we had good financers with us - NAVIN & SAGAR! First stop was BIG BAZAR. We hardly liked anything there. And yes the problem with me is that everything looks good on me no matter what because of my health. I ain't boasting about it but at the same time I can't stop telling you how happy I am to have such personality! And thats the reason why I bought a few things there. So after this we went to BRAND FACTORY where there was so much to take and all of us were confused as to what should be chosen. Our most of the time went there. After returning, our mood of photo session vanished as soon as we saw that our hostel lights were out! We then went walking to Z bridge where all of us were talking about a lot of things that would happen at our weddings and the life after that, how our present and future conditions would be. Then at 12 a.m. we were back at hostel. Came on the terrace where we planned our tomorrow. Again shopping at BRAND FACTORY. So, went again for shopping and took almost twice number of clothes that we bought yesterday. Again no photo shoot! THEN THE EVIL IDEAS CAME....

Taking hard drinks in hostel is banned! If you are seen bringing any bottle of that sort, you are doomed. But all of us wanted to try it out and so after much discussions we reached the conclusion of bringing it on board. It was finally going to happen after 2 years. So the search began as we wanted to taste a specific brand only! We bought a bottle and then intentionally brought it in our hands while entering the hostel gate only to try out our fear factors. We took that bottle and went straight in the hostel by walking and not on bike. The guards never checked us and so we were good to go. All the ideas had come from the book "5 point someone". As the characters in that book had gone up to the terrace to drink 'vodka' and listen to 'pink floyd' songs, we also thought of doing the same. So we came on terrace opened the bottle and all 5 of us started drinking! It felt so nice to drink on the terrace. With nothing over your head and a bottle in your hand you just think of yourself as the king and once you drink you think yourself as to be THE CREATOR, GOD! It was a marvellous experience and would suggest the same to anyone who is reading this.

.....arey yaar I forget to tell you what I drank finally. I don't know what you all were thinking of us drinking. If you had trust in me and know me well then you would have never brought the idea of us taking beer or vodka or brandy or anything of that sort! Check yourself. The drink I was talking about is 'Appy Fizz'. Sure drunk can refer to anything that is drunk not just the hard drinks! Talking about the hard ones : I still had no break ups, so have much much time to have some of those. If you don't know what APPY is then you gotta taste it. Either Appy OR Appy Fizz - ANYTHING. The bottle may appear as a beer bottle and looks the same but it tastes 'maahhoollll'! All of us really love it!

Halloween is flying toward us on its broom of darkness.  It's prime time for costume preparation and parties. Blondeshell and I spent all day Saturday visiting costume shops near and far to put together some interesting, spirited costumes.

Let me tell you, I'm glad I do not work full time in a halloween store.  The screaming of banshees and flashing lights pretty much had me Halloweened out by the end of the day.  I'm still looking forward to the big day--or several, as I'm working on three different costumes for three different events.  Did I mention how much I love Halloween???

Well, after shopping in the Saturday crowds, I have a little shot to suggest...  It's green and creepy looking and tasty!

The Goblin Melon Eyeball Shot

• Midori Melon Liqueur
• Vodka

It's super easy:  pour half the shot vodka and half the shot Midori.  If you like super sweet drinks, just pour the Midori straight.

Get a tray.  Get a bunch of shot glasses.  Pour this eerie green potion and serve it around the Halloween party.  Looks festive.  Tastes great!
