Did you know that according to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) the main ingredients in most carpet cleaning solutions are perchloroethylene (used in dry cleaning) and naphthalene.  The fumes released can cause dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, disorientation, nausea, kidney and liver damage.  Naphthalene is neurotoxic and a possible human carcinogen (EPA).  Be sure to read labels carefully before purchasing any household cleaning agent.

I'll be reviewing newer things over the next couple of days, with my main focus on video reviews. With all of the people in my house and mountains of homework on the horizon, it'll be tough to get one out, but I'll try my hardest.

Later today (or probably tomorrow), I will be discussing my new, unasked-for cynical view of video games and my new format of blogging. I will also be explaining the new direction this blog is going to be heading into, as there are already dozens of other, more popular blogs which relay video game news to the public. I will probably be shifting more towards my personal feelings on other news stories, rather than providing the whole news story and adding a bit of my opinion towards it. I think I would like it more that way.

As for Friday's video review, I'm not completely sure it's happening. I think the mic in which I use collects too much of my breathing and background noise and sort of makes me sound like a douchebag, so I might fully resume video reviews once I get a new microphone that doesn't suck as much.

But, that's about it. See you all this evening when I write something worthwhile.

Finally, Victory against BPA... whatever the hell that is!

Water is amazing! Simply Amazing. Great for your body, Great for the planet... zero calories, filling, delicious, the essence of all things natural. We are mostly water, Our earth is mostly water. We send robots to mars to look for frozen water, it's THAT damn cool! Humans Love Water.

But over the past decade or so serving water in a bottle has become the norm, and that norm has become a mess of an environmental problem. We use too many plastic bottles and only 20% of them are put back into the manufacturing system. The rest sit in landfills or are incinerated, neither of which is all that great.

I became strikingly aware of this during a recent golf outing where at the end i had a cart full of bottles, most of them carrying water. So after that I took it upon myself to find a durable, portable, reusable plastic bottle similar to a nalgene. What i ended up settling on is the Camelback 750ml Water Bottle. It comes in many colors and two designs, with or without camel's um.... nipple.

Reusable water bottles are good examples of what I call "green by use" products (as opposed to "green by make"). The items itself is not recyclable, but its purpose changes the way in which we "use" complementary products in a way that benefits our resources. This product is well priced, well designed, affordable, resource friendly, and has mass appeal. Those traits award it 5 gears!

I got one for myself and the mrs., mine is a smokey gun metal and hers is dark red. If you haven't already I recommend you pick one of these up. You'll drink more water and pollute less.

But maybe now we can move into new conventions that look more like a tetherball game than a book.  Carnegie Mellon student Johnny Lee has prototyped the use of the Wii remote controller to show how an individual user can navigate in a 3D space.  

What's interesting for my work is the possibility of organizing one's personal information in that space to make connections faster across different lists: contacts, calendar, to dos, as well as the communication messaging actviities and reusage itself.  We can tether bits of our lives together to make a more interesting visual representation of our day, our work, our identity, our community, than we could have up to now in a 2-D environment of page or paper.  What goals would be associated with that potential?  Hmm..

Well, in the short-term Johnny's simple headtracking should prove the value of the telepresence for the individual user.  This headtracking mechanism could afford individuals in a geographically distributed team to "gather around", and so become of one mind in the deep engagement of the design they are discussing. 

What is missing in that scenario is the easy translation of everyday data into visual representations of data, a la Smart Money's Map of the Market or NewsMap if they turned 3-d to show other variables in play.  My husband's start-up ModViz, purchased this March by NVidia, had a product that dynamically generated 3-d, high resolution visualizations of complex data sets (like geological data from oil explorations).  Maybe the combination of all these technologies isn't far off at all.  Maybe we'll soon treat two dimensions as archaic, and be immersed into our work like never before.  Bring it on!
