I've recently come across Taken By Trees, solo project of Victoria Bergsman.

You may recognise her unique voice as the former leadsinger of The Concretes. Victoria, as well as being one of the three founding members, was singer and songwriter for The Concretes for 11 years until deciding to leave the band in 2006.

You will probably also recognise Victoria’s voice from one of the biggest and most popular songs of last year, Peter Bjorn & John’s "Young Folks" (yes, the one with the whistling). Bjorn Yttling helped Victoria to produce the album "Open Field".

Her album "Open Field", released 2007 on Rough Trade, her voice is delicate and beautiful and overall it's a stunning record. She recently released the single "Sweet Child O' Mine", a Guns & Roses cover.

I'm kicking myself for missing her at Le Weekend Festival in Sitrling last month.

Un potente attacco di batteria e subito dopo un fischiettare allegro che non vi toglierete più dalla mente: è Young Folks, piccola perla indie pop del trio svedese Peter, Bjorn and John, accompagnati dalla voce di Victoria Bergsman, ex dei The Concretes. Contenuta nell’album Writer’s block (2006), la canzone è stata utilizzata nelle colonne sonore di alcuni telefilm (Grey’s Anatomy e Nip/Tuck, tanto per citare i più famosi) e anche in molti spot pubblicitari in Europa e America. Ma i nostri Peter Bjorn and John non saranno uno dei tanti gruppi ricordati per un unico successo: tutto il disco merita di essere ascoltato (e non dimenticato) per le melodie spensierate e vibranti di canzoni come Up against the wall e Objects of my affection e per la qualità degli arrangiamenti.

Un’ultima nota è dedicata al video stile cartoon in cui i protagonisti si incontrano al parco,  superano il primo approccio fischiettando e dopo un giro in autobus finiscono a una festa, dove l’unica cosa che importa è “talking only me and you”.

“Tutti scrivono, tutti cantano, tutti suonano e tutti sono felici" si legge sulla loro pagina di MySpace: non ne dubitiamo, dopo questa canzone.

Essa música que é "sooooo last week" foi hit absoluto na Inglaterra em 2006, ficando atrás somente do "Over and Over" do Hot Chip, que eu já postei aqui há algum tempo. O vocal feminino é de Victoria Bergsman, do grupo The Concretes.

Indie e intimista, "Young Folks" é óóóóótema!

PS: recomendo ouvir essa música na pista do clube A Lôca, aqui em São Paulo. É alucinante!

"The album sounds like a quiet forest in winter," says Sarah Tomlinson, a music critic for the Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times. "You feel like it's a hushed mood. She's telling these stories, or singing these lullabies, and you sort of have to draw in close to listen. That's what makes it so appealing."

In a sparse, desolate soundscape that seems to draw equal inspiration from Nico, Cat Power, and Vashti Bunyan (at least in this writer's opinion), TBT's debut album Open Field is a charming collection of minimalist pop folk. The songs - simple, demure, tender - evoke a certain sense of melancholic longing without surrendering to the traps of self-importance or overt emotional masturbation.

victoria bergsman left the concretes sometime ago. one of the reasons given was that she didn't like touring. that might cause a hinderance to a band yes....

co produced by peter bjorn and john's björn yttling and lendings of percussion by john eriksson; her debutant solo album "open field was released in july with some anticipation whether she would tour or not since the four demos ("tell Me", "too young", "lost and found" and "hours pass like centuries") had been going rusty on the band's official website since the september 13, 2006.

the show, a leafy spectacle itself began with a short projected feature about trees to the music of the album's title track. which leaves... yes leaves you eh...taken with trees... but for appreciate claps the place is pindrop quiet to hear her first show outside her home country.
exemplary woozy stripped back vocals and bergsman's honest lyrics are short of astonishing.

members of 'electrelane' take keyboards and accordians while support act "ass" takes guitar duties and other members of camera obscura hang about the crowd. theres a lot of shuffling and mentions of stage fright but everything takes place as it should in a humble fashion. a sweet if somewhat awkward affair.
