The idea started as an odd notion. I was sketching various designs for small, personal vehicles, such motorcycles, atvs, jetskis, snowmobiles, and ultralights, when I thought how interesting it would be to have one of each powered by steam. When I came to the ultralight, I thought "that couldn't be done, you'd need this and this and this..." As I thought about everything that it would require, the problems it faced, I realized that they could all be overcome. But why build a steam-powered ultralight if it can only fly for 30 seconds? I realized that if I could build an ultralight, powered by steam, that would fly accross the atlantic ocean, and then do it, it could potentially inspire people to chase their own dreams, and think that nothing is impossible.

The tunnel.  I have to ride through here to get to the desired trail.  It gets shorter toward the other end.  I scraped my helmet on the top on the way out.

The dark green plant in the center is called Mormon Tea.  You can soak it in hot water for a refreshing drink.  The other plant is a mean cactus.  A few months ago I was riding with my friend Kyle in the same area when I heard him yelling substitutions for curse words (dang, hooey, etc.)  He had a broken-off piece of this type of cactus hanging off his knee.

I think this is a barrel cactus.

At the top of my run, looking back down into the valley.  Still feeling confident and ready to burn it all the way back.  Should be lots of fun.  Should have noted in my mind any rough turns but oh well...

My body lying in a tangled mess after my first endo crash (end over the handlebars.)  Statistically speaking, I should have a broken collarbone right now.  No damage done.  What a fun ride.

Taking off first thing in the morning is a great way to start the day. You usually don’t get too nasty from flying if it is early enough. Besides you don’t want to get caught in a bunch of afternoon thermals anyway, unless of course, you actually like riding them. The helmets are forgiving and you can always braid your hair and place it up in the helmet. The only thing I would worry about is protection from the elements (the desert is cold this early in the morning) and the dryness can be just awful.

•Stay Hydrated: It is easier to stay hydrated when flying in the mornings than it is in the hot afternoons. There isn’t much room on some Ultralights, so you can choose to use a Camelbak water pack or carry a water bottle in a small pack. Honestly though, you usually only stay out an hour or two so a lot of water isn’t necessary. However, if you have to make an unplanned landing in the middle of nowhere, it is a smart idea to have sufficient water on hand. Use your best judgment.

•Sunscreen & Clothing: This goes without saying. You are flying a small, and usually open, aircraft around in the sun. Even if it is in the early morning, you never know how long you will stay out or if you have to make an unplanned landing. Plus, the helmet has a large face opening so you will get some UV exposure and that can cause premature aging, ergo facial wrinkles! Covering your arms with long sleeves can be a good idea. Personally, I am pretty cold in the morning air and like a light jacket and gloves.

•Baby wipes: What an amazing concept this item is. These things work for everything. A small, travel pack will do and can help with cleaning grime, hands, fuel spills and other clean-up jobs. They dry out in the heat once they are opened even if you seal them back properly. Seal them further in a small Ziploc baggie if need be and stash them in a cargo pocket.

•Lip Balm: Dry, chapped lips can be an issue when flying. Especially the open Ultralight trikes like I was in this morning. My bottom lip is split right now from the dryness. I like the Vaseline Lip Therapy line, or Noni lip balm but anything you prefer will do. Make sure it has at least a SPF 15 sunscreen!

•Mirror: A small compact is a good idea, not just for beauty but also for signaling in the event of an unplanned landing if your cell phone doesn’t work. You can carry a small one in your jacket pocket and use it to, you guessed it, check your nose if you get the sniffles. Remember to place a Kleenex travel pack in your pocket, as well.

•Make-up: I am usually too lazy to put on make-up this early. But I do put a layer of foundation and powder on to help block UV light. I quickly fill in my brows and add some mascara and I am out the door (okay, so maybe I do put on a little make-up). It is usually cold so I don’t sweat a drop making it easier to stay on. Plus, the helmets are forgiving and usually won’t affect your make-up. However, if you are doing afternoon flying in the heat, you are going to have to freshen up post-flight. I don’t usually bring anything with me on the trike; if I do it stays in the car. Too busy flying to care if the coyotes think I’m cute or not.

•Hair: If your hair is long, keep it braided and double it up like a loop. Even better, place it in your helmet. You don’t want long hair caught in a propeller or any other dangerous, moving part. As with your other sports, you can use an Under Armor skullcap. They come in vented and non-vented styles. They really aren’t a bad idea under your helmet. Please take care with long hair and moving parts!

•Nails: This is a judgment call. I personally, and usually, can fly with long nails. However, if you are not accustomed to doing so, keep your nails medium to short because you may rip one or two of them off like I did the other day (see right). Wear protective, sure-grip gloves, as well.

At The End Of The Flight
If you start out early enough, you usually don’t need a shower post-flight. You may get a little dusty but that can be wiped off with a wet-nap or baby wipe. It’s the sweat that can get you funky to the point of no return. Plan your flight around the time of day you are most comfortable.

Ultralight entrou em cartaz na última sexta, 1º de agosto, no Teatrix. A peça mostra o universo feminino na relação de Julia e Suzana, duas irmãs que, quando se encontram depois da morte do pai, não conseguem demonstrar afeto e carinho. Zeza Mota e Edi Fonseca conseguem levar a platéia - com ajuda do clima intimista que o Teatrix proporciona - a mergulhar naquela relação conflituosa junto com as personagens.

O texto de Jarbas Capusso Filho mostra a falência da inocência, a culpa, a solidão: Julia sempre viveu na casa dos pais e cuidou do pai até a sua morte. Suzana mora nos Estados Unidos e lá se tornou uma escritora de sucesso. De volta ao Brasil, Suzana tem que decidir, junto com a irmã, onde serão depositadas as cinzas do pai.Entre as sucessivas tentativas de resgate do amor entre as irmãs surgem diálogos ao mesmo tempo cortantes, irônicos e divertidos.

A cenografia, com objetos sempre na cor branca, junto com o figurino, que segue o mesmo padrão, dão um tom onírico e até de loucura a toda a encenação.

Com direção de Tatiane Daud, que garante emoção aos movimentos das atrizes, a peça se sustenta como um drama com momentos de comicidade incríveis e que leva a reflexão acerca dos limites do relacionamento humano, do amor e da loucura provocada pela solidão.

A montagem fica em cartaz até o final de novembro, sempre às sextas às 21h30 no Teatrix, localizado na Rua Peixoto Gomide, 1066. Os ingressos custam R$ 30,00.

 If I am going into the mountains and will be fishing small streams or lakes I take a 5 weight fly rod with a reel and line to match. When I went to the Olympic Peninsula I took a 7 weight rod. I take floating lines as I feel that I can use sinkers to get the fly down if needed.

To protect the rod I made a lightweight rod case out the plastic center of a roll of wide printer paper. You can check with a local printer that uses roll paper and get one. The walls of the tube are structured so it is fairly strong and light. The fashioned end caps for the tube with pieces of tube that I cut off and duct tape. I also put a piece of foam at both ends to cushion. This case is not as protective as a full metal tube, but I have found it sufficient, and I would not just attach the rod without a case.

Autogyro, a 2 seat, rotary wing, multi-utility, light sport aircraft, popular in the U. S., Europe, South Africa and Australia is now all set to be introduced in Indian aircraft market also. Though it resembles a helicopter in having a rotor at the top but in fact it is an aircraft in which the fixed wing is repalced by a rotating wing. Historically speaking, Autogyro even predates the helicopter, as it was invented by Juan de Cierva, a spanish civil engineer in the year 1920.

West Wind Aviation and Services Private Limited, which has joined hands with Microlight Aviation (a consortium of Indo-European Microlight Manufacturers) to manufacture Autogyros at its Microlight Airfield in village Pachar in district Sikar of Rajasthan. The company shall be manufacturing the autogyro under the brand name Super Genie Autogyro. The Company shall also manufacture a four different types of microlights, all of which have tricycle landing gear and low wing monoplane configuration. The Autogyro and the Microlights shall be priced in the range of 35 to 45 lacs depending upon the price and performane of the aircraft.

The company also plans to open up a flying school on the Microlight Airfield so that training for Pilot License (Microlight) can be imparted to the would be purchasers of the microlights. This training school shall be the first of its kind in Asia for imparting training on Autogyros.

The Company plans to display the Super Genie Autogyro and Phantom-MKI, a high performance Microlight at the Hyderabad Air show to be held in October 2008 where demonstration flights would be undertaken in full view of the public.[slideshare id=521010&doc=westwind-aviation-and-services-private-lmited-1216578384203397-8&w=425]

Vibhooti Singh Deora, CEO of the Company says that their first microlight should roll out within three months of the completion of certification process by the DGCA, and probably that shall happen by the beginning of May 2009. According to the Company, marketing for these aircrafts shall not be problem because the prices are almost equivalent to most of the luxury sedans available in India with fuel average even better than those. Therefore looking at the economics of the aircrafts the Indian market is all set to accept them. More than 100 registrations for these microlights have already been done most of which are from Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, New Delhi, Lucknow, Nagpur, Chennai, Shirdi and Rajasthan. According to Deora, many people have approached them and inquiries have been pouring in, the response is positive not only due to the low price of aircraft but also because in this way luxury car owners would now be able to fulfill their dream of becoming aircraft owners.

Though the concept is quite new to India but there is a possibility that Autogyros could get a better response in comparison to the microlights. One of the most distinguishing feature of the Super Genie Autogyro is that it is an inherently stable, safe and crash-less aircraft, i.e. even in case of a mid-air engine failure, it would land easily and safely with the help of its auto-rotating main rotor.

The other feature which distinguishes Super Genie from other aircraft is that it can fly as slow as 30 kilometers per hour, a speed at which other aircraft would lose lift, stall and fall to the ground like stones. Though the Super Genie can fly stably and continuously even at a height of just 6 inches above the ground, it can even go upto the height of 10,000 feet.

The Super Genie is 4 meters long, weighs 248 Kg., has a single 100 hp 4-stroke engine in pusher propeller configuration at the back, providing it the thrust required to move in the forward direction. The single non-powered free rotating rotor on the top acts like a rotating wing and provides continuous lift to the Autogyro. Super Genie does not need a runway but just 5 to 10 meters of hard surface or grass for take-off. According to the Company, their Autogyro consumes approximately 13 to 16 liters of MOGAS per hour (not 100LL AVGAS) and with just 60 liters, it can fly 600 kilometers non-stop at a cruising speed of 150 kilometers per hour.

Presently Autogyros are being used in Europe, the U. S., South Africa and Australia for pipeline and canal inspections, forest and highway patrolling, border surveillance, agriculture crop spraying, aerial survey and photography, sports and recreation.

Day 4 was one of the more challenging days in terms of the trail grade and condition. Shortly after leaving camp the trail disappeared in an area that had been hit by several slides, we were force to bushwhack in the general direction that we thought the trail was until we did find it again. As always, there were wildflowers adding their color and grace to the countryside.

Our first day on the trail started out through West Eagle Meadow and we fully expected to see a herd of elk; the night before we had seen plenty of sign that elk were about. A couple of miles into the hike we ran into a father and son trying to help a colt down the mountain, evidently the climb had been too much for the young horse. These were the last people that we were going to see until we ran into two guys at about the same spot as we came out.

I would have to describe this day as Up, Up and Away, the trail pretty much climbed continuously until we crested the pass at 8126 feet. Being our first day the packs were loaded with their maximum weight so the going was slow and steady.

As we gained elevations we were given peeks at what we would see in future days. If you look close in the above picture you can see Echo Lake that will be our last camp.

The lunch stop was a welcomed relief as we enjoyed a beautiful meadow with a small brook gurgling along. Take a look at the UltraLight chairs and the comfort that they provide. I have a blog that talks specifically about these chairs.

Flowers were everywhere and although I didn't know their names they provided fun little sparks of color, many like these are very small so you have to take the time to see them. It is amazing to think that this whole country side is covered by feet of snow all winter long. It is important to remember when you are in places like this that the ecosystem is very fragile and one misstep could damage something that will take years to recover.

What a relief, we were finally at the pass and as you can see the view made it worth it. As we would climb and drop elevation we were treated to transitions from one vegetation zone to another. This picture is looking down at Tombstone Lake that was camping spot for the night.

Home sweet home. We had to have our afternoon swim in the lake and then set about catching fish for dinner. Fortunately the fishing was just good enough that no one went without, of course we are not foolish enough to assume that we would catch fish so we had plenty of backup. I had even carried a liter of wine in a box so we had a nice wine to go with our fish.
