With an all star cast, including Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, Steve Coogan and Robert Downey Jr, Tropic Thunder promised to be a hilarious film, to top the likes of Meet the Parents or Meet the Fockers.

I went to see the film yesterday. Although I found some parts immensely funny, the film lacked something. Watching Stiller singing while holding the head of the dead director on his machine gun was enough to make me chuckle for hours to come. However, the film wasn't, in my opinion, great.

The funny moments yes, were good, but it wasn't enough to disguise the film's lack of story line. The characters weren't developed; we knew pretty much nothing about Stiller's lead character, or any of the other ones in the film. The film lacked all sensibility, and I know, yes it was a comedy, still needed some reality.

I have to add though that Tom Cruise stole the show, with his cameo as a Film Producer/Executive. He was hilarious, especially when he was dancing in his office. Lol. (You'll understand if you see the film!) It was nice to see him not taking himself so seriously, as he does in his normal films.

No muthafuckin’

C'mon, I dare you, slap me hard if I'm kidding you.

Chicken, hah?

No muthafuckin' way....

Well, then - I finally got to see TRUE comic mastery in action.

Yeah...

I'm talking Tropic Thunder....Tropic muthafuckin' Thunder.

Directed by Ben Stiller, this could be his funniest film since Zoolander.

Here, Ben also co-stars as Tugg Speedman, who finds himself in the company of Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black, channeling John Candy via Nutty Professor-era Eddie Murphy), Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr., channeling Russell Crowe) and Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson Jr.) among others as he shoots a Vietnam War-era film on location in (where else?) Vietnam.

Under the direction of the hapless Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) these bunch of Hollywood spoiled brats find themselves in even deeper shit when writer "Four Leaf" Tayback (Nick Nolte, superb even with phony prosthetic hands) insists their scenes be shot deeper in the jungle away from the ready availability of hangers-on - in a stretch jerry-rigged with hidden cameras the better to capture the real-life anguish of the protagonists in his "memoirs" (which turn out to be fictional - he once worked as a cleaner for the US Coast Guard.)

The "ensemble" come with their respective emotional baggage. Speedman himself is looking for a career resurgence after diminishing returns for successive installments in his Scorcher action-film series (and an ill-advised detour into Oscar-Worthy Acting Moment™ territory with Simple Jack). Portnoy sees this as a vehicle to break out of his being typed as a comic actor in the wake of the success of his flatulence-fest Meet the Fatties, while Australian-born Kirk Lazarus dares break acceptability barriers by playing an African-American soldier ("I know who I am...I'm a dude playing the dude disguised as another dude"). Even Chino, the multi-platinum rap superstar, has questions about his sexual orientation.

This film doesn't just revel in the guile-less bloodletting liberally celebrated in '80s-era Vietnam War films, it turns some of its conventions right on its head. Who would think that a mere child can manage to serve Tugg Speedman's ass on a platter, not to mention look over an entire camp of poppy growers? Nevertheless, there are a number of moving scenes there, including two where Tugg himself pays tribute to one of the most iconic scenes from one of these abovementioned Vietnam War flicks (clue: that particular film's director has a new one coming out over the next few weeks with a one-letter title)

The guest stars in this potent collection of talent get to shine, from Matthew McConaughey (who seems dedicated that Tugg gets his TiVo as per stipulation on his contract) to a nearly unrecognizable Tom Cruise (as the appropriately named All-Powerful Hollywood Studio Exec™ Les Grossman, full of profane bluster); even Tobey Maguire's a hoot as a monk who has these sort of feelings for his fellow man-of-the-cloth (played by Downey in his Kirk Lazarus guise - Spidey 'n' Shellhead in a medieval Brokeback Mountain moment to the tune of Enigma's "Sadeness Pt. 1") Pinoy-made-good-in-Hollywood spotters rejoice; Anthony "Rufio" Ruivivar has a small role as a soldier who gets killed early on.

The writers of this film - including the multitalented (he acts, he directs, he...) Justin Theroux (who's all set to pen Iron Man 2, again with Downey putting on the red-and-gold suit) - fill this chockfull of zinger lines guaranteed to take up residence in blogs over the next six to nine months. As far as I know, Stiller could be the only living director to be able to get away with killing a panda - and making it look funny (and let's not get into this whole "retard" controversy)

Jeff Portnoy (to Tugg Speedman): "Oh no - you killed ME!!!!"*

The audience to this film - yours truly included - seems to agree with Jeff as one on that.

*Not part of the script but just something I cooked up myself

Before you go see this film, don't forget to ask for this at your concessionaire!!!

Ben Stiller e Jack Black..

Well... fiquem com o trailer!!

The third and presumably final trailer for Madagascar 2 has popped up and it gives a lot more insight than the previous two. I wasn't a big fan of the first Madagascar (I actually thought it sucked), but this looks potentially better, and though it'll undoubtedly be incredibly stupid, there may be a few decent laughs.

Co-directed by original helmers Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath and written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder), the sequel, whose title can be read as Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa or Madagascar 2: Escape Africa, has the four New York Zoo animals from the first film attempting to return to their home on a plane piloted by penguins only to crash in continental Africa.

In typical DreamWorks Animation fashion, the film features the voice talents of many notable people including Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder), Chris Rock (I Think I Love My Wife), Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women), David Schwimmer (Friends), Sacha Baron Cohen (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street), Cedric The Entertainer (Street Kings), Bernie Mac (Transformers), Will.i.am (the band Black Eyed Peas) and Andy Richter (Semi-Pro), and will premiere on November 6th in Hungary and Russia (???). Will you go see it?

This is a movie within a movie. Interestingly, both movies satirize other movies, which need not be in the same genre as the movie hosting the making of a movie. It is a rather liberating concept. Director-writer-star Ben Stiller makes this project work, due primarily to his keen satiric aptitude. It's a fun project. Stiller has no problem, apparently, in inducing a boatload of familiar actors to do brief scenes, or cameo roles. Included amongst these is Jon Voight and Tobey Maguire. Many of the film stars are graduates of the "Saturday Night Live Comedy College." Well, they may not have actually graduated but did "have fun" for a year or so.

The film opening can catch you napping, as it begins with a series of seemingly unrelated video subject matters. Pop, pop, pop, and pop. One after the other are scenes of "Tugg Speedman" (Ben Stiller), a film superhero of the Superman sort; "Alpa Chino" (Brandon T. Jackson), doing a MTV type of gig; "Jeff Portnoy" (Jack Black), doing all the roles in a "fat family that farts" film; and "Kirk Lazarus" (Robert Downey, Jr.), doing a topical scene from a movie "study" of young monks mutually "mooning" at matins.

Now all of these various "teasers" from their respective films are genre satiric. Readers should note that "Alpa Chino" is a name play on Al Pacino. All of the names were selected for a purpose--mostly to imply something of the character's personal traits, as "Lazarus." Naturally, this fits an actor whose career is "dead" and is trying to "rise again." Also, it fits more generally the white man "born again" as a black man. And so it goes with the names of players, generally. Tom Cruise plays "Les Grossman," which is a pretty good character moniker for more than a few of the Hollywood moguls.

Character types are not the only sources of humor, of course. Ben Stiller almost overdoes his satirization of "Platoon" and in particular the scene of Willem Dafoe's trying to reach a helicopter while being pursued and shot at by Viet Cong. While racing, staggering, and with arms reaching up to the sky, he receives numerous shots in his back and falls dead. Stiller himself does the "arms reaching" bit at least twice. Generally speaking, all the movie-within-a-movie shots were either "borrowed" from the Platoon or Rambo flicks, and reworked with Stiller's satiric eye.

However, the making of the movie is also a grand parody of this sort of film. The recent, Peter Jackson version of King Kong (2005), in which Jack Black was a star, is a case in point of a movie-within-a-movie. Hence, it seems likely that he had some comic contributions to make in its usage here.

In Tropic Thunder the Downey character is so committed to his role that he undergoes an operation to darken his complexion so that his portrayal would be more authentic. This calls to mind the almost luny commitments of actors from Lon Chaney Sr. to Robert De Niro and Renee Zellwanger to achieve almost physically exact types of the character being played, exclusive of special effects and make-up. Folks, some actors are very committed.

Since I found parts of this film very funny, I can hardly condemn it. It also makes you feel better about the acting professing. After all, how many professions regularly make fun of themselves?

A Small Capsule: A group of disparate actors and entertainers sign on to make a film being produced by tight-fisted Les Grossman. They rendezvous and get to the Southeast Asia locale for shooting. Naturally, the talent elbow each other a bit to establish a "pecking order." They confer with their director, "Damien Cockburn" (Steve Coogan), who is a rather "unstructured" Aussie. Earlier, by means of print, the moviegoer learns that the movie to be made is based on the "real life" story of Viet Nam hero, "Four Leaf Tayback" (Nick Nolte), who claims to have lost a hand in combat. He is present as an "advisor." Nolte plays him as a grizzled, no-nonsense, and possibly dangerous individuals. Once the actors realise that Cockburn is uncertain in his direction, they all want to dance to their own motivational music. Grossman has to step in. Tough, crude and tyrantical, he keeps the film going more or less on schedule. Even the capture of Tugg Speedman by Golden Triangle drug peddlers does not particularly bother him. They have a movie of his (satire of Forest Gump ) on DVD and recognize him. They both hold him for ransom and compel him to entertain the drug militia with "stage" acting. This drug warlordship is ruled by a young, mini-Ho Chi Minh named 'Tran" (Brandon Soo Hoo). Grossman listens to their ransom demands and then gets tough himself. Ultimately, "Tugg" is expendable. Tuggs agent, "Rick Peck" (Matthew McConaughey), is forced to "wheel and deal" to save his premier "property." In a sense the film revolves around Les Grossman, who becomes as weighty and central as the Sun in our solar system. But Stiller and Downey command the most attention in terms of filmtime, which is what you'd expect of stars playing stars. Still, Stiller generously doles out filmtime to the others--and they all seem to enjoy the fun of it. The "realistic" film tribute to the bogus 'Nam hero, Four Leaf Tayback, turns into a real war flick between rescuing actors and the hardnose, drug-pushing militia. Fantasy turns into bloody reality early in the film with the "accidental death" of director Damien Cockburn. This serves as a prefigurement that the movie is turning real. However, since nearly everything is played for laughs, the moviegoer is not too upset about anything in the film. When life imitates art, where is painful reality to be found? When the Great Architect is a Special Effects Man, what can be taken seriously other than the magic of sound and fury. Incidentally, this film ends with the "sun" - Fatima-like - dancing with the stars.

I promised some time ago that, unlike many of the bloggers writing about Ben Stiller’s Tropic

I promised some time ago that, unlike many of the bloggers writing about Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder, I intended to see the film the first chance I got so I could make up my own mind about whether it is offensive to people with disabilities.

What with one thing and another, today was the first chance I got as my wife allowed me the decadence of an afternoon at the cinema. The initial response is that I cannot understand what the fuss was all about.

I previously wrote that "The protesters against Tropic Thunder appear to be either misunderstanding or willfully ignoring the fact that Tropic Thunder is a satire in order to get their point across" and that I couldn't "shake the feeling that this was a protest looking for a target."

Having seen the film I am more convinced than ever that this was the case and that a protest was the wrong strategy. I couldn't help thinking about the claim made by David Tolleson (executive director of the National Down Syndrome Congress) that he came out of the cinema having seen Tropic Thunder "feeling like I had been assaulted."

The claim is as laughable as anything in the film. The target of the jokes is so clearly Hollywood, as opposed to people with disabilities, that I believe you would have to have a huge chip on your shoulder to think otherwise.

One of the main issues protesters had against the film was the portrayal by Stiller's character (an action film actor trying to be taken seriously) of Simple Jack. In this article from The Guardian, David Tolleson described the portrayal as "shockingly awful", missing the fact that that was, in fact, the point. The satirical portrayal is also criticised within Tropic Thunder itself.

Having seen the film I find it hard to believe that those leading the protests that had also seen it did not understand that Simple Jack was satirical portrayal of an actor playing someone with intellectual disabilities, as opposed to the sort of ridiculous portrayal of disability seen in other films.

Within the context of Tropic Thunder Simple Jack makes sense, although I can understand that in isolation it would appear offensive. It would appear that DreamWorks made a big mistake with the viral campaign based on Simple Jack that kicked off the protests against Tropic Thunder, and was right to pull it.

The protests could, and perhaps should, have ended there and some of the other complaints against Tropic Thunder are difficult to fathom.

In The Guardian article, Tolleson describes "a segment of the film involving Stiller and Matthew McConaughey. When Stiller's character says he wants to adopt a child, McConaughey looks at a photo of himself with his arm around a boy vacantly staring into space - clearly meant to have an intellectual disability - and says: 'At least you get to choose yours. I'm stuck with mine'."

Like others I do not think it was clear that the boy was meant to have an intellectual disability. In the short period of time that the boy is on the screen I would suggest it is impossible to know for sure if he is supposed to have some sort of disability or just be uncool and uninterested.

If one assumes that protesters against the film understood that it was satire then one has to assume then that they chose to ignore it in order to draw attention to the campaign to eradicate the use of the term "retard".

That is an honourable campaign and I agree that the word retard should be used sparingly in the media. The word is used many times within Tropic Thunder, but almost exclusively entirely within a single conversation between the characters player by Stiller and Robert Downey Jnr.

I previously argued that its use in this conversation was justified by the context of the characters and the storyline, and this is definitely the case. From that perspective the repeated use in the conversation is much more justifiable isolated use in other films for shock value or to get a cheap laugh.

I fully understand why those that protested against Tropic Thunder are concerned about the portrayal of disability in movies and in reducing the use of the word retard and wish to bring their concerns to the attention of the film industry, but I maintain that in Tropic Thunder they picked the wrong film to protest against.

Deeeci:

Get Smart.

Night on Earth, 1991.

Movies are basically emotional manipulation. That’s not necessarily a bad thing (we do it all

Movies are basically emotional manipulation. That's not necessarily a bad thing (we do it all the time when we want someone to do something for us), but we should always acknowledge the impact that movies can have on our perception of reality. They contain images, music and effects which can have a lasting influence. Still, one has to wonder what exactly movie protesters hope to accomplish by parading in front of movie theaters holding signs and making loud, inconsidered statements.

Let's take a recent example: in a new movie based on Jose Saramago's novel Blindness, Julianne Moore plays a doctor caught up in an epidemic of blindness which reduces the social order of an unnamed city to chaos. The blind are quarantined in less than ideal facilities, where some of them break down, unable to care for themselves, while others resort to savagery just to stay alive. An organization of blind activists is protesting that the movie depicts negative stereotypes of blind people that could "undermine efforts to integrate blind people into the mainstream." Their complaint is that blind people are not social misfits who cannot get dressed or brush their teeth in the morning. The bottom line: "Blindness does not turn people into monsters."

I suspect that, as in any traumatic situation, going blind would trigger different responses in different people. Many no doubt learn to cope with their new condition and even thrive, and all the more power to them. Others may get bitter, aggressive or lose their will to live. But this activist group does not seem to appreciate the context of the movie. This is not about people who have either been blind since birth or developed the condition later in life in a more or less functional, stable civil society. The movie concerns an epidemic of blindness which strikes suddenly and en masse, overwhelming the civil infrastructure and efforts of policemen, aid workers and medical personnel (who also go blind themselves). Picture a scenario in which in the blink of an eye you find that all you can see is a milky whiteness, and within minutes or hours of that onset your friends, neighbors and fellow citizens are struck down with the same ailment. I have no doubt that there would be widespread social disruption, just like in the movie, and there would be people who just couldn't cope with the sudden blindness, the ensuing chaos and the indignity of being shoved into sheep pens by the government. Are you trying to tell me that all these people would suddenly start acting like angels, miraculously developing coping skills without any support and graciously laying down their lives to help their fellow human beings? Now THAT would be a distortion of reality.

To be sure there are outrageous negative stereotypes of blind people which lead, as the article mentions, to an inacceptable 70% unemployment rate. I have no truck with such stereotypes and I would be ashamed of people who did. But this movie is not about ordinary blind people. It is not about blindness as we commonly experience it. It has nothing to do with blind people in the real world. It should instead be read as a parable of the triumph of the human spirit against impossible odds, just like the novel.

There are other examples of misguided and ultimately ineffective protests I could mention: Christian fundamentalists protesting The Last Temptation of Christ, which was a beautiful and deeply spiritual movie made by an earnest Christian based on the work of a writer (Kazantzakis) who thought more about the paradoxes of Christianity than many of these protesters, many of whom hadn't seen the movie and who probably never themselves wrestled with the mystery of God becoming man in any serious fashion. Or again more recently, the protests of negative stereotypes of Persians in the movie 300, which was set in the fantasy reality of a graphic novel and again has nothing to do with real-life Persians; or the protests over how the main characters in Tropic Thunder referred to mentally challenged people, when the whole point of the movie was to caricature boorish, inhumane people who do use such slurs (should the latter too protest their depiction in this movie? Hmm).

It is good for people to be dedicated to causes like helping the blind integrate into mainstream society and I have nothing but admiration for those blind people who persevere and lead a full and fulfilling life. But boycotting and protesting movies only shows insecurity and often betrays a lack of understanding of the filmmaker's motives and the real meaning of the movie. We must always be careful not to let our loyalty to a cause, however worthy, blind us to other perspectives and prompt us to react impulsively, immaturely, and ultimately ineffectively.

Went to see it last night.

I don't even know where to begin.

This film is basically a satire of Hollywood in general and action films in particular (neither of which I'm a big fan of). It holds a star studded cast, as well as the main three 'Stiller / Black / Downey Jr.' there are minor roles going to Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise, as well as cameos by Tyra Banks, Alicia Silverstone, Lance Bass, Jon Voight, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Jason Bateman. Ben Stiller is the director, producer, writer, lead actor.

Don't get me wrong about this film; some bits are really really funny. However I think the humour is just sort of empty. It's a farce and it tries so hard to be wacky and controversial. It's main aim is to poke fun at a bunch of spoiled rotten, self-centered actors - rather relevant to our current Hollywood.

Apart from some absolute classic comic moments from Robert Downey Jr. and some genuinely accurate satire by Stiller (namely a spoof film called Simple Jack - which really has been taken the wrong way), the antics here are pretty empty, redundant and long-winded. This film will most definitely be a hit, the comedy fans out there will fall in love with it; and it will be one of those highly over quoted films. Personally I'm just not sure what to make of it.

So, if you want an outrageous look at method actors, failing actors and falling actors; maybe you will benefit slightly from this film. It's just a bit overwhelming.

Sadly the film is also scattered with unnecessary F-bombs. It is very offensive.

*Sigh*.

Stay tuned

My latest trip to the cinema saw me sat in front of Tropic Thunder. The film is about a film company who are producing a war/action type film. It sees actors such as Ben Stiller (whom it is directed by) and Jack Black finding themselves lost in a rain forest with only a map and a list of scenes the movie is supposed to include after the initial movie setting is a disaster.

Before watching the film I'd heard good and bad reviews and opinions on the film. After seeing the film myself I was unsure about how much I liked it. It certainly wasn't Ben Stiller's best work nor did it top Jack Black's performance in School Of Rock. However, I did find some scenes in the film amusing but it was just the fact that it took a bit to get going.

I would recommend watching it but I don't think I will be buying this one on DVD.

[caption id="attachment_28" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Stiller: "][/caption]

Peter Webber (Hannibal Rising) will direct The Spider's House, a romantic drama following two ex-lovers who meet again in 1950s Morocco, on a backdrop of growing tensions between freedom fighters and French colonials. It is adapted by newcomer Laurie Cooke from a novel by Paul Bowles (The Sheltering Sky).

The 1987 classic supernatural thriller Angel Heart is getting the remake treatment. The original film was written and directed by Alan Parker (The Life Of David Gale), based on a book by William Hjortsberg (Legend), and stars Mickey Rourke (Stormbreaker), Robert De Niro (Righteous Kill) and Charlotte Rampling (The Duchess) among others. Watch the original's trailer below.

Jack Black (Tropic Thunder) will star in an untitled spoof of the Bourne films, from the screenwriters of Kung Fu Panda, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. Black will play an amnesiac who's convinced he must be a spy...FYI, this movie was already made last year into the very unfunny Code Name: The Cleaner.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (Charlie Wilson's War) will voice Max in Mary And Max, a claymation film about two penpals, an 8 year old Australian girl and a 44 year old Jewish New Yorker dude. In the meantime you'll be able to catch him in the incredible looking films Synecdoche, New York (see the trailer) and Doubt (see the trailer).

British actor Michael Sheen (Blood Diamond) just signed onto two films: the new Alice In Wonderland movie from director Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street) and the terrorism-themed thriller Unthinkable from Australian director Gregor Jordan (Ned Kelly), also starring Samuel L. Jackson (Lakeview Terrace) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Disturbia).

Director Martin Scorsese (The Departed) is set to reunite with regular star Robert De Niro more than 13 years after the mob flick Casino. The new film will be based on the non-fiction book I Heard You Paint Houses from author Charles Brandt, as adapted by multi-award winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian (American Gangster).

The new Sherlock Holmes movie from director Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla) is shaping up to be sexier than the world's greatest detective has ever been, as after Rachel Mc Adams (The Family Stone) joined the cast as Holmes' love interest, British actress Kelly Reilly (Mrs Henderson Presents) has now signed to play Watson's.

[Her character Mary] causes tension between Watson - who wants to marry her - and Holmes - who resents her competition for Watson’s affections.

One of the most talked about forthcoming movies, Sherlock Holmes is said to be a reinvention of Arthur Conan Doyle’s character and starts shooting tomorrow in London for a 2010 release. It star Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder) as Holmes, Jude Law (Sleuth) as Watson, and Mark Strong (RocknRolla) as Blackwood, the villain. The film was co-written by Ritchie, Anthony Peckham (Don’t Say A Word), Simon Kinberg (Jumper) and newcomer Mike Johnson.
