I recently watched a DVD copy of THE MACHINE GIRL and after 97 minutes of wanton brutality, decapitation, out-of-this-world weapons and typical nice-girl-gets-wronged-and-seeks-revenge theme reminiscent of KILL BILL, I have to pass judgment one way or another.

But before I do that, first things first. The Machine Girl is about a pretty orphan schoolgirl named Ami whose little brother was killed by a bunch of high school thugs led by a scion of a wealthy Ninja-Yakuza family. She tries to avenge his death by hunting down those responsible.

The movie opens with Ami, in classic japanese serafuku uniform accosting a group of high school bullies who were picking on a boy. It turns out that this was the same group that bullied her brother to death. While the cheesy opening credits flashed with classic B-Movie flair, the bullies fell one after the other as Ami unloaded rounds upon rounds of bullets upon them. What follows is a series of flashbacks showing how his brother died and how her quest for revenge went wrong, leading to her capture and the dismemberment of her left arm in the hands of the cruel ninja-yakuza family. For some reason, however, she managed to escape and meet willing partners in revenge who also gave her an outsized machinegun glove tailor-made for her left arm which was cut just below the elbow. She resumes her quest and loses more friends and gains more enemies in the process. Several decapitations, copious amounts of spurting blood a la Kill Bill, a chainsaw, a flying guillotine and a drill bra later, she stands bloody and torn yet victorious - and still wearing her cute sailor moon uniform to boot.

The story is a bit of a cliche and the effects have "FAKE" written all over them. The movie does not make an effort to hide its surreal, anime influence with the characters behaving in a cartoony manner as silly enemy rituals and formations reminiscent of Bioman and Maskman abound. A lot of gory things bordered on the goofy as well especially when Ami's hand was turned into a giant tempura by one of the bullies' parents. This coming from a movie that is classified as Action/Horror. A good anime upbringing and a healthy dose of Fangoria or love for Clive Barker novels would definitely help one appreciate this movie even more.

The movie was released direct to video in the US but was shown in theaters last August 2 in Japan according to Wikipedia. I doubt it's going to be screened elsewhere with the sheer amount  of bodies cut in half, heads a-flying, and general splatter and gore presented every few minutes or so. For little pervs and schoolgirl fetishists out there however, there's precious little to expect as cute Ami did not give a lot of upskirts here. Shaider's sidekick Annie will give her a run for her knickers everytime.

For all its shortcomings and gory cheesiness, I'd be a lying bastard if I didn't say I enjoyed this movie. Kawaii!

I have been incredibly excited about the Vanguard Theatre since the owners first discussed the concept with me back in June and the first wave of promotional fliers began popping up. Since that time I've been telling everyone I know, but never managed to get word of it up on Backseat Sandbar. After a successful trial run at Forecastle, the Vanguard Theatre is giving something of a trial run to the public at large tonight with the double feature presentation of Girls Rock! and Kataude mashin gâru (The Machine Girl) which hold a 73% and a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively.

The concept of Vanguard is simple...independent, artistic and foreign films in a unique movie-going environment. In large part, they intend to be a step beyond what Baxter used to be, and unlike anything we've had in Louisville for years. Additionally, and unlike any of the cinemas in town, you (can) get double features, wood-oven fired pizza, a full bar, outside seating, full service inside theaters & as they describe it, tons of awesomeness. The only thing keeping the guys from getting everything started is, unfortunately, money, and so, to help ensure some kind of cash flow, they've devised membership programs ranging from $10 to $10,000 with various privileges afforded. You can become a member on their website, or simply by clicking the link below. I for one intend to sign up for the $50 package for contribution as much as anything. The concept is great, I know the execution will be great...they just need our support. So have an easy night tonight while resting up for tomorrow's show...

The Machine Girl: Ami is a typical college girl. Ami's brother has racked up a considerable debt to another boy at school, and that boy just happens to be the heir to a clan of vicious ninja-yakuza. Ami's brother can't pay, violence breaks out and in the course of trying to avenge her brother, Ami is captured by the clan. They torture her and hack her arm right off. Ami escapes, barely alive, and is taken in by the owners of a machine shop who build her a customized, bullet-spewing arm. From that point, the quest for revenge is on in earnest.

Off topic now. I just had to mention this. I watched this really cool movie tonight with my fam. It's called THE MACHINE GIRL, written and directed by Noboru Iguchi. What a crazy movie. Pretty fun. It's in the style of Kill Bill and that other blood splattering black and white movie. Real grindhouse, you know? Well in this one, you can't help but be reminded of a real life exaggerated anime film. It's so exaggerated and gory that you can't help but laugh a lil. Shoot, I did. Anyway, the best thing that I love about this movie is that the main character, Ami, gets a machine gun prosthesis for her lost arm. Much like the comedy horror classic , Evil Dead, where Bruce Campbell gets a chainsaw for his lost limb. I recommend watching both of these at least once. Pretty cool poster huh?

I celebrated my Nation's birth by watching movies all week. It was a pretty good mix of foreign films, rubber monsters, and boobs!

Frontier(s)

This brutal combination of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Nazis (now that's a match made in hell) makes for a pretty intense viewing experience. It's not quite the second coming of horror as it's been made out to be, but I still enjoyed it.
The "heroes" of Frontier(s) are actually pretty unlikable, but in the end you can't help but root for them since the villains are so despicable. What's worse than Cannibals? Nazi Cannibals of course! It's also the 2nd French horror flick I've seen in a month that had the recent Race Riots in France as a backdrop. Night of the Demons 2

Night of the Demons 2 is a lot like Beer. It's not fancy, new, or original but it gets the job done. All I wanted was some gore and nudity, and that's just what I got. Not quite a cult classic like the original, it was nonetheless a fun way to waste 90 minutes. Decent effects as well.

The Machine Girl (Kataude mashin gâru)

The Machine Girl is actually a Japanese movie made specifically for Western Audiences. It really shows since the filmmakers threw in everything Westerners have come to expect from Asian film:

-Everybody knows Kung Fu.
-The bad guys are Ninjas, Yakuza, or both.
-All the girls in Japan wear school uniforms w/ short skirts.

I guess I'm a sucker, since I enjoyed this tale of a girl w/ a machine gun arm out for revenge. It's filled with intentionally cheesy gore that can be silly at times, but ultimately adds to the movie's charm.

The Tingler

Definitely the most fun I had this week, The Tingler is classic William Castle Schlock (that's a compliment by the way).

Vincent Price is awesome as usual, here playing a scientist researching fear. His experiments lead to the discovery of the sex toy sounding The Tingler, a parasite that forms on the spinal cord in moments of intense fright.

The Tingler is technically a bad movie. There are huge plot holes (more like a plot craters) and the "special" effects consist of a rubber worm and a lot of visible wire. None of that matters, of course, because the movie is so much fun you'll easily overlook its shortcomings. This is a really entertaining Drive-in flick and highly recommended for B-movie lovers' liker myself.

Pour ceux qui aiment le glamour local : TRUFFE (ce soir, jeudi 3 juillet 19h, salle Théâtre Hall). On ne sait pas trop quoi penser de l’OVNI de Kim ‘le Marais’ Nguyen, avec à son bord des stars d’ici, quoique la bande annonce est assez intrigante merci… reste à savoir si c’est réussi. Le plus? La première mondiale, Michèle Richard sur le tapis rouge à Concordia (souvenez-vous lors de son dernier passage dans un motel cette moquette souillée…). Le moins? Jean-Nicolas Verreault (eh oui, il a fut un Kiwi avec Francis Reddy). Qui vivra verra.

Pour ceux qui adoooooore vraiment trop Tarantino : SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO (ce soir, jeudi 3 juillet 21h45, salle Théâtre Hall). Non, ce n’est pas un nouveau délire du grand Quentin. Cette fois-ci, il fait l’acteur dans le western japonais en anglais (!!!) du schizophrénique réalisateur Takashi Miike.

Le prolifique type a réussi plusieurs coups de génie, souvent délirants, étranges et/ou extrêmes (souvent les 3 en même temps, donc pas pour enfants). Notamment, les Audition, Ichi the Killer, Visitor Q, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Gozu et Imprint (son épisode banni de Master of Horror) en ont fait halluciner plusieurs. Cependant, ayant réalisé quelques 78 films depuis 1991 (incluant beaucoup trop de mochetés tournées pour la télé), Miike nous a souvent déçu : comme quand on est venu voir à Fantasia l’inter-minable Full Metal Yakuza (notez l’utilisation du trait d’union dans le qualificatif), le douteux One Missed Call (l’original, c’était lui, pastichant pas subtilement Ringu) et le ridicule The Great Yokai War (à côté, Labyrinth est un chef d’œuvre!).

Donc, ici on nous promet un western violent et anachronique à la Sergio (le maître Leone et Corbucci, le papa de Django; 1966), avec des acteurs japonais baragouinant un anglais de type phonétique (n’inquiétez-vous pas, ils l’ont sous-titré!) et un Tarantino suave en narrateur présent à l’écran devant des décors peints fort joliment. Donc, un western spaghetti, servi en sauce wasabi, ça vous dit?

Pour ceux qui préfèrent leurs films noirs surréalistes : LA ANTENA (vendredi le 4 juillet 15h et le lendemain 17h, salle J.A. De Sève). On parle d’un hommage monochrome aux débuts du cinéma (le film est quasi-muet), en particulier à l’expressionnisme allemand (style Metropolis) d’il y a presque un siècle, avec une folle bande annonce rappelant le rétro-futurisme d’un Terry Gilliam (Brazil, 12 Monkeys), mélangé à une version surréelle du 1984 d’Orwell, le tout bricolé poétiquement par des Argentins. Ça regarde vachement bien.

Pour ceux qui aiment leur gore salissant et bien marrant : THE MACHINE GIRL (vendredi le 4 juillet 17h15, salle Théâtre Hall). Croisement jouissif entre The Evil Dead, Tetsuo the Iron Man et Planet Terror, TMG saura réjouir autant les fans de Brain Dead (AKA Dead Alive), Kill Bill et Bagman Profession Meutrier (sérieux!), que ceux des classiques Grindhouse des années ’70. Ça gicle, ça charcute et ça explose du ninja, du yakuza et du ‘bully’ comme c’est pas permis!!!  Vous allez en redemander! Même si ça sort sous peu en DVD, c’est sur un grand écran et avec un public assoiffé de sang que ça risque de réellement cartonner… avouez!

Si alguien pensó que las Películas John Rambo, Azumi y Kill Bill eran violentas se equivocan totalmente, The Machine Girl es probablemente la película más violenta y sangrienta que haya visto en mi vida.
The Machine Girl nos narra la historia de Ami, una joven estudiante japonesa (con sus inconfundibles uniformes) que decide vengarse sobre aquellos que asesinaron a su hermano pequeño.

La película en sí es muy desagradable pero también es muy mala, digna de cualquier coleccionista de Cine B o Serie Z (nunca llegué a diferenciar estos conceptos) aunque tengo que decir que yo soy un enamorado de este género. Si planeais una buena sesión de cine violento con los amigos no dudéis en ver The Machine Girl. Parecerá que soy un exagerado, pero prefiero avisaros y que luego la veais con todas las consecuencias a no decir nada y que me caigan palos de todos los frentes.

Resumiendo y dejando la cosas claras: Si te gusta el cine del Siglo XXI te sentirás decepcionado, si eres de los que piensan que la wwe es verdad no la veas, si eres un cotilla (mi caso) mira primero este trailer.

Amantes del gore, ayer vi esta pelicula y puedo asegurar que es de lo mejor que he visto ultimamente. Mucha violencia, japonesitas lindas, yakuzas odiables, todas las situaciones comico-bizarras que uno pueda esperar y unos 600 litros de sangre! IM-PER-DI-BLE produccion de Tokio Shock. Como suele suceder con este genero no es para cualquier estomago amateur, asi que cuidado.. je.

En si se trata de una chica, que luego de que un grupete de pendeyakuzas hicieran volar a su hermano menor (y unica familia) desde un edificio, decide vengarse, busca ayuda en la familia de otra victima como la sacan a los pedos, se le salta la chaveta y empieza a cazar y masacrar a los asesinos solita. Encuentra a la cabeza de la organizacion pero le cuesta un brazo, y con la ayuda de los que antes se la negaron, seguira en su busqueda de venganza hasta lograr su objetivo final: asesinar a todos los culpables para que el pequeño Yu pueda descansar en paz.

El tema "venganza" se esta volviendo muy popular en peliculas de mote sangriento, las heroínas han ganado muchisimo territorio, como en "Kill Bill" o la tercera parte de la "trilogía de la venganza" del director Koreano Park Chan-Wook, "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", son mujeres bellas, de fragil apariencia y pasado misterioso, que ante una situacion determinada se transforman en asesinas implacables. La combinacion resulta irresistible y pienso que todabia tiene mucho para dar porque todabia no ha surgido la asesina de asesinas.

Well, another week down in this new venture of mine. I know I don't have a huge readership yet, but I'm still going to go ahead and establish a weekly "Week in Review" post for anyone who doesn't feel like rummaging through the archives.

• The Strangers (which, if you don't know, I loved) made a big splash in the box office last weekend, holding its own against that Indiana guy and those horny chicks in New York.
• Who's on board to direct Halloween 2? The sequel to the Rob Zombie version, that is. A couple of Frenchies who made a little movie you may have heard of...
• Erm, a remake of I Spit on Your Grave? The biggest question is: Why?
• Thank you, Universal Studios, for the greatest musical idea ever! Now, will you just bring it to the east coast?
• In researching vampire films (I'm still getting to actually watching one...), I came across Rudyard Kipling's "The Vampire." It's neato.
• And did you get a chance to see what my DVD Pick of the Week was? At the time that I wrote the post, I hadn't seen it, but if you look below, you'll find a review.

• I finally got around to seeing Stuart Gordon's From Beyond. As good as Re-Animator? Well, you'll just have to read the review to find out, won't you?
• I also finally got to see The Machine Girl, a film I'd been looking forward to ever since its insane trailer hit the Internets a couple of months ago. Did it live up to the hype that my brain created for it?

If the trailer for The Machine Girl doesn't make you want to see the movie, then there's not much that I'd be able to do to change your mind. If that sort of over-the-top, blood-spattered roaring rampage of Japanese revenge doesn't get your juices flowing, then I've got nothin' for you.

But for those who've seen the trailer and are shivering with anticipation, wondering if the film itself is all that the trailer makes it out to be, then I can go ahead and answer that for you with a resounding "Yes." The Machine Girl is ridiculous. It is over-the-top. It's a bloody comic book of a movie with no basis in any sort of reality that I've ever witnessed. But when you've got a protagonist with a machine gun for an arm, what can you really expect? Other than awesome, I mean.

The plot's pretty simple, and really just serves as an excuse to unleash some bloodletting. Ami and her brother Yu are orphans whose parents offed themselves over shame or something, because they were falsely (?) accused of being murderers. Why are two school-aged kids allowed to live alone together without proper adult supervision? I don't know. Maybe DSS works differently in Japan. Yu and his friend Takashi are constantly picked on by bullies, the leader of which also happens to be the son of a Yakuza. Yep, we've got Yakuza. (Awesome factor just went up a notch.) Oh, and it's a Yakuza gang that's descended from a ninja clan. (More awesome.) A ninja clan named after Hatori Hanzo. (Too much awesome... can't... handle...)

Whew. Okay. So anyways, these bullies basically bully Yu and Takashi to death and Ami's none too happy about her only living relative ending up on a nosedive from a parking garage. So she seeks revenge, does a decent job of taking on the Yakuza, but not good enough to keep from having her arm lopped off. She eventually escapes and stumbles to the house of Takashi's parents, a couple of mechanics who wisely sew up Ami's arm instead of taking her to a hospital. They train in some kung fu type stuff, plot revenge against the Yakuza, and eventually retrofit Ami's nub with a machine gun.

Unfortunately, it does take about 2/3 of the movie for Ami to get her machine gun arm, but that doesn't mean that the movie shies away from other gloriously gory fun. Yous till get to see some decapitation, head-knifing, forehead-nailing, and a tempura-fried arm. Which looks delicious. And once Ami does get that arm, all hell breaks loose, as she immediately kills the shit out of some tracksuit-wearing ninjas (in a clip that was released online, almost in its entirety, a few weeks back).

As I said before, the "plot" is nothing more than an excuse to have fun with lots of fake blood. That's not a complaint, at all. Because in a movie like this, you really watch it for the action scenes. You watch it for the chainsaw battles, the face-exploding, and the pee-pee electrocution. Really, you watch it for the blood. The violence is pretty intense throughout, but is presented in such an exaggerated and unrealistic way that you never really get the feeling that what you're seeing is real (unlike, say, the Saw or Hostel films, which went for realism). For a more well-known example, think of Kill Bill, particularly the House of Blue Leaves fight sequence that capped off Vol. 1. It's a big, live-action comic book.

In fact, I'd like to view The Machine Girl as a sort of super-hero origin story, and this is just the beginning of her adventures. This is one of the few cases that calls for a sequel, where we get to see The Machine Girl go on to take on other Yakuza gangs with her weapon of choice. It'd be a blast to follow Ami on even more blood-soaked adventures.

Okay, I haven't really seen The Machine Girl, so maybe I shouldn't make it my "pick of the week" sight-unseen? But then, HAVE YOU SEEN THE TRAILER FOR THIS MOVIE? It's insane. (No? Well, you can find it below.) Besides, the only other real competition it has this week is The Eye remake, with Jessica Alba. And since I haven't seen it either (because I've seen the original and can't imagine it being improved upon... plus, everyone says the remakes sucks and I believe 'em), I think it's a pretty fair contest between the two.

Also, if blind Jessica Alba were to tussel with the chick you see pictured above, that little Japanese school girl would totally win. Keep in mind that she's got a machine gun for an arm. And that's how I choose my DVD picks.

The Japanese make some truly wacky movies like the squid movie The Calamari Wrestler . Later this summer on August 8th the movie The Machine Girl or The One-Armed Machine Girl (片腕マシンガール Kataude Mashin Garu) will be released. The film stars beautiful gravure idol Minase Yashiro 八代みなせ in her film debut and had its worldwide debut at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival on March 22nd. The film is written and directed by Noboru Iguchi 井口昇 who directed Sukeban Boy and Cats Eye body.

This slasher revenge movie tells the story about a high school girl Ami ( Minase Yashiro 八代みなせ ) who leads a normal life until a gang of bullies associated with a yakuza family kill her little brother and friend and took away everything she ever had.

When she goes after her revenge, she soon finds herself in over her head and minus her left arm. Barely surviving, she escapes and seeks out shelter from two kindly garage mechanics who fit her with a gattling machine gun . She then teams up with the chainsaw-wielding mother (Asami) of her brother’s slain friend and together they unleash a revenge fest against the equally creative machinery (drill bra, flying guillotine) of their relentless ninja yakuza enemies.

The Machine Girl Trailer

Parę dni temu w internecie pojawił się trailer nadchodzącego wielkimi krokami filmu "The Machine Girl". Trzeba przyznać, że wrażenie jest niesamowite i być może otrzymamy produkcję, przy której Battle Royale wydawać się będzie bajeczką dla małych dziewczynek. Jest poważnie, krwawo i główna bohaterka ma jasno sprecyzowany cel - sprawić, by prześladowcy i mordercy jej rodziny cierpieli w nieopisanych mękach.

Z tego co możemy dowiedzieć się z trailera domownicy i chłopak bohaterki zostają zamordowani przez rodzinę Yakuza, do tego świetnie orientującą się w technikach stosowanych przez ninja. Dziewczyna jednak cudem przeżywa tragedię i jak to w filmach zrzynających z Quentina Tarantino bywa - postanawia się zemścić. W miejsce amputowanego ramienia wstawia sobie ogromnego guna i rusza wymierzyć sprawiedliwość na własną rękę. I trzeba przyznać, że ze śmiercią jej do twarzy.

Japoński tytuł tego filmu to Kataude Mashin Ga-ru [片腕マシンガール] i zgodnie z doniesieniami serwisu IMDB ma trafić do kin (na Polskie bym specjalnie nie liczył) w przyszłym roku. Wszystkich zainteresowanych ludzi o mocnych nerwach i swobodnym podejściu do gatunku gore odsyłam do obejrzenia fascynującego trailera tej produkcji. Trzeba przyznać, że połączenie niewinności młodej dziewczyny i jednego z najpopularniejszych na świecie dział masowego rażenia, to mieszanka wręcz zabójcza.

Szykuje się prawdziwy hit, odwołujący się do produkcji klasy B z lat 70 i 80, obok którego żaden miłośnik kiczowatego kina nie będzie mógł przejść obojętnie.

Quentin Tarantino powinien czuć się zaszczycony widząc jak Japoński reżyser kontynuuje jego wizję niewinnych uczennic z Japońskich szkół średnich :)

Ogólny rys fabularny wydaje się niezbyt wyszukany, ale świetnie nadaje się do pozawieszania na nim, jak na świątecznej choince, barwnych ozdób z konwencji grindhouse/gore. W trailerze możemy zobaczyć masę krwi, innowacyjny biustonosz z morderczymi wiertłami, latającą gilotynę (ciekawe, czy ta nazwa to już zastrzeżony znak handlowy?), ostre jak żyletki gwiazdki w stylu nowoczesnego ninja, sushi z ludzkich palców i masę ociekających posoką walk.

Zdecydowanie nie jest to film dla dzieci!

Zapowiada się szałowo, widać mocne naleciałości Kill Billem i Planet Terror, czyli po prostu Tarantino i Rodriguezem (tych dwóch nie muszę chyba przedstawiać). Ciekawe jak to wszystko wyjdzie i czy będzie przyswajalne dla polskiego widza, który ma jednak zupełnie inną wrażliwość niż japoński odbiorca. Premiera ma nastąpić w roku 2008.

Ciekawe też, czy jest to pierwszy symptom przejmowania przez japońską kinematografię wzorców amerykańskich - wcześniej to Zachód inspirował się w robieniu horrorów dokonaniami Wschodu: The Ring, The Grudge, wszystkie te małe, upiorne dziewczynki to zapożyczenie z Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni. Ciekawe, czy te role się odwrócą - byłoby całkiem zabawnie.

Na razie możemy delektować się takimi perełkami, jak The Machine Girl!
