Biosensor Format and Technological Backbone for a “National Biodefense & Pandemie Immune System”
Peer F. Stähler, PhD, Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, febit biotech GmbH, Germany
The unforeseeable nature of biodefense and pandemic threats suggest the development of a “National biodefense & pandemie immune system”. The technological backbone we propose provides: Fast and sensitive detection, ability to rapidly adapt and distribute tests, and decentralized test production to reduce vulnerability. A network of production sites feeds another network of analyzers. The components of this system are with units for flexible synthesis and instruments for analysis of high-speed microfluidic biochips equipped with microarrays of superb quality and 3’-oligos to enable polymerase based signaling.

This publication will explore the latest R&D and technology innovations as well as ready-to-market systems for major biothreat detection, identification, and analysis.

Table of Contents

Chapter 1
Next Generation Cell Sensors for Virus Identification - Field Based Assays
Spiridon Kintzios, PhD, Associate Professor, EMBIO/AUA, Greece; and Co-Founder, BERADiagnostics Inc.

The state of the art of portable, field-deployable cellular biosensors is presented. An emphasis is given on a new technology called Molecular Identification through Membrane Engineered cells (MIME). The surface of MIME cells has been modified by the artificial insertion of molecules (such as antibodies) that can react in an absolutely specific pattern with potentially any virus under assay. Examples are given regarding the detection of Hepatitis B and C viruses, prions and avian influenza virus using Bioelectric Recognition (BERA) sensors loaded with MIME cells.

Chapter 2
Integrated Microarray System for Identification of Infectious Disease Agents
Charles Daitch, PhD, President, Akonni Biosystems, Inc.*

The TruArraytm technology includes a portable controller instrument and disposable plastic modules for testing clinical samples. The controller processes the sample with a simple programmable interface. The technology incorporates state-of-the-art microfluidic processing for concentration, amplification and hybridization of proteins and nucleic acids with microarray detection, thereby, allowing full automation of the amplification and multiplexed identification processes. The technology will offer health care providers with the ability to analyze for hundreds of genetic or protein signatures in one, rapid, simple to use, low cost test. Herein, we discuss the technology application with multiplexed detection of orthopox viruses in comparison with real-time PCR diagnostics. *In collaboration with: S. Ibrahim, USAMRIID

Chapter 3
Metagenomic Analyses of Uncultured Environmental Viral Communities
Mya Breitbart, PhD, College of Marine Science, University of South Florida

Metagenomic sequencing of uncultured viral communities from seawater, marine sediments, human feces, and human blood show that viral communities are extremely novel and diverse. Through these analyses, we have gained insight into the identity, diversity, and geographical distribution of viruses. Genomics of environmental viral communities allows for the detection of known pathogens and provides the opportunity for identification of emerging threats.

Quick background on these lunch sessions: Each month, three or four people are called upon to share either what inspires them or what’s going on in a specific area. So far, I’ve seen some of our creatives talk to what motivates them and share trends and up-and-coming names in art and design; some of our tech team talk to emerging technologies, showing off what they can do and how they’re relevant to our clients; and finally some of our modern media team share the newest ways we can help people find what they’re looking for more easily and get more relevant information in front of them for our clients. Like I said, it has all been very fun to take part in as well as quite inspiring and energizing.

The first search engines online were very simple, and didn't work nearly as well as the ones we use today. That was to be expected, as everything that is used by many people online has to start somewhere, but grows as users grow and change. New technologies make things better, and also allows those things to be used for new purposes. Yahoo is one of the great search engines out there, and this site can help you find a phone number of an old friend with a little effort on your part.

You can use the general search on Yahoo, but you may have better luck finding the Yahoo People Search. Yahoo has special searches for things like images, news items, and even local things, just as many of the other searches do, but they also try to make searching for others easier with the people searching section. This can help you find more relevant information much more quickly.

The people search on Yahoo has a few options from which to choose. You want to try the phone number search first, as that is where you are most likely to find that telephone number for your old friend. If they have any accounts with Yahoo, as many do, you may find the number right away. You can also find numbers through the major landline listings in the US through this search option. Add as much information as you can.

Though you want someone's phone number ideally, there is another good form of communication that you can use. Yahoo also have an email search that you can try. Some list their numbers with the email accounts, and opt to have it public so that old friends can reach them. If there is no number, but an email address comes up, you can try to contact them that way instead.

You will find that you can do some reverse searching elsewhere online if you think you have the right number, but you want to know for sure before you dial. Take that number to a site developed to help you find out who owns a number. This reverse search can help verify who owns the number now, if anyone.

Yesterday, Space Exploration Technologies Falcon 1 launched its fourth flight into space. This is the first privately developed launch vehicle to reach earth orbit from the ground. This is important because this was done by a private company, not by NASA or any other government agency. Could this lead to future commercial space travel?

I was a key agitator at my last campus for getting a link resolver (I felt like we were the only library who didn't have one yet; very old school) and was happy to arrive here to find a 21st century library with article linking software all in place. I've only used the Serials Solutions product, but have to say I'm a fan--students can get from citation or abstract to full text in just a click or two, and we see big big usage jumps in databases only a librarian could love, like Sociological Abstracts (xoxo SocAbs). My big issue, though, is that the link resolvers are forever not quite working exactly right. The configuration is a litle sketchy in this database or that one, and the results screen is a jumble that only a librarian can decipher--it's searching by title instead of ISSN and so pulling junk results from ProQuest--or is simply funky, triggering the wrong kind of search across our sources, missing this and that and that and that.

I love a techtool that works like magic (xoxo refworks), but worry that when I teach students to use those tools, they end up ill-equipped to solve the problems that inevitably come with our clunky systems. And I also worry that we end up with students who are highly skilled at finding resources only in a particular library using their particular branded tools (for example, the student who asks in a graduate course, Where's your FoxHunt?). I think an obvious solution is to develop better, more reliable library search systems that work more often than mostly. Absenting that, here in a short-term future without next-gen catalogs or universal health care, how do we equip our students to use our tools, even when they don't quite work?
