I just got off another half-hour call with the Generic Indian Tech Support People. As I found out from a trip to the ATT Retail Box earlier today, the water damage indicator is not a sticker, but a small hole. Way to train your employees, generic tech support outsourcing company.

On the upside, I did get someone who actually spoke english rather than reading poorly translated sentences off a screen. The call was not really that bad (although it wasn't great, either.)

I'll be getting a new phone in the mail sometime this week.

Given all the buzz (to put it mildly) around Mac OS X Leopard, I was quite looking forward to the "upgrade". I obviously had not taken into account the reality distortion zone that surrounds all things Apple.

Used to be the world's best operating system

Now, as Leopard has soured for me, the extent of that distortion zone has become clearer: bloody hell, it's vast. I've compiled a list of problems in Leopard over a few weeks, as things irritated me -- and the list just kept growing. At the same, I've started working on another Mac still running Tiger at work -- and haven't missed Leopard for one moment.

Leopard's ghastly melanoma-like spots:

It killed my G4 iBook's battery -- and I'm not the only one. Apple replaced it, though out of warranty: thank you, Apple. Polite and pleasant, you weren't, mostly, but you did replace it.
One gets the distinct impression that Apple has never assessed the service provided by its representatives in Africa, much less the apparent price fixing.

Apple simply removed the wonderful Bluetooth SMS functionality from Addressbook. Words fail me. One does not upgrade software in order to have features removed.

Having a reliable wifi connection has become nightmarish. I'll shut down and reboot many times, without problems, and reconnect automatically. Then suddenly, one day, my login password won't be recognised, no matter how many times I type in exactly the correct password. "Invalid password, invalid password, invalid password." Only rebooting the router and Mac, or playing with the router settings manages to fix it. I now read that New York schools are refusing to install Leopard until Apple fixes this issue.

Killing troublesome apps is slower than before: for the first time since I started using Macs, I have apps refusing to respond to command-apple-esc, freezing up my machine for a couple of minutes before finaly letting go. How wonderful that Leopard can make me feel I'm using Windows, without having Bootcamp (still being on a PPC machine).

Many of the new icons are far less distinctive than before. I open finder windows, and what were clearly distinguishable icons in Tiger are replaced by indistinguishable grey blobs as I watch. It's like seeing the grey goo scenario for nanotech in action.

Preview has some useful added functionality: but the new annotation features are almost unusable. The previously very useful ability to add "stickies" as annotations, and save as a conventional PDF has been banished in favour of functions that are completely put to shame by the likes of Skim.

Safari still can't render its left margins properly, so the text on many sites is jammed almost unreadably right up against the edge of the window -- no such problem in Firefox.

And why the hell is Safari STILL not compatible with some websites? How can it be "the fastest browser" when often one's forced to take time out to launch Firefox? (When the Mac version of Firefox de-uglifies itself and integrates with Mail -- I'm always using Apple-I, and shift-Apple-I in Safari -- I'll probably switch.)

The much-vaunted Stacks feature was next to useless;

The Finder is shoddy and inconsistent: eg., if I clear my desktop using Expose, and then click on a file on the desktop, focus remains with the app I've been using, rather than returning to the Finder. This means manipulating desktop files is incredibly frustrating, and Expose is rendered useless. It's so simple, Apple. When Expose clears the desktop, give focus to the Finder; when the desktop is re-populated, return focus to the last app in use.

There's now an annoying little tic where, having double clicked a file name to rename it, it suddenly reverts itself to being highlighted. And when you do rename a file on the desktop, it often bounces around like a crazed kid with ritalin withdrawal before settling down.

That Starfield desktop is hideous. Just see that, and you know some Windows ME mole has crawled up the Apple orifice and set about making things ugly and unusable. Yes, I know, the Starfield is easy to replace, and I've done so. But the shabbiness of the thought behind it was extended when it was chosen as a desktop icon. Given that most people change their desktop images, this decision makes no sense at all, unless the icon changes as well.

Arbitrary changes of established icons. Why is the Applications icon in the Dock now dressed with the Address book icon? More than once, I've clicked on it thinking it was the Address Book. This change makes even less sense when you see that elsewhere in Finder, the applications icon is the same as before.

Speaking of icons, how much sense does it make to take what were unmistakably different icons, and reduce them all to blue uniformity -- yet change them when they become bookmarks in the leftmost column of the finder? Why does the Finder icon in the dock no longer open a window when one clicks on it?

Safari: again, this demonstrates how Apple is losing its mastery of the small things. Because, bizarrely, active windows are darker than non-active windows in Leopard, Safari goes dark grey when active. Personally, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this, I find it rather difficult to read black text on dark grey. Three years ago, this kind of foolishness would have been inconceivable. Web clips? Lovely idea, but they don't work very well. Invariably, some weirdness creeps in after a few days, and they have to be trashed.

And good old-fashioned icon previews? Used to work, but no longer. Some icons become previews, and some just don't, in my experience. No predicting when and how you'll be blessed with a preview of image or video clip. And the same applies in coverflow. Sometimes you just sit there gazing at a empty frame, waiting in vain for it to fill itself. Perhaps yesterday those files revealed themselves, but today, like moody strippers, they give nothing.

That plus button on the top left corner of every window, usually green, continues to be utterly useless. Supposed to optimise the shape of a window for its current content, it manages this task perhaps one time in twenty. Most former Window users, one suspects, continue to click it in vain, hoping it will at least do something simple and potentially useful, like maximising the window for the screen.

Software update now downloads programs in the background by default, and without notice, taking a dodgy page from the Microsoft book. Now that may be fine for people for whom data is cheap, but those without access to cheap data (here in South Africa, for example) would like to know when things are to be downloaded, and plan our data consumption. Yes, there’s an option to preview downloads, but in my experience it unselects itself.

And on the subject of unwanted downloads, the Help function as always insists on checking the net as well, without asking. Help is abominably slow, and has been through every iteration of OS X.

Spotlight? I honestly can't tell the difference between 10.4.11 and 10.5.2. But the more I use it, the slower it gets.

Time Machine? It's an app; get the darn Finder right first. But since you ask, it's constantly throwing up errors, in my experience, and not nearly as intuitive as all the reviews suggested.

Many of my MP4s no longer play video -- sound only.

Shutdown now takes much longer than in Tiger.

To Dos in Mail? Bizarrely, mine have at times turned up as tooltips in Word. This is so weird I couldn't even manage to be irritated by it.

So ... if someone actually reads this, and if that someone is a scornful power user, do not trouble to comment. No doubt, you will be able to offer workarounds and elaborate rationales -- all of which are irrelevant to someone who just, without fuss, wants his Mac to work as well as it did running Tiger (which I'd reinstall, were it not for the time and bother involved).

One gets the feeling that either some key people left Apple during the Leopard development process, or that new people with rather less clarity of thought arrived and starting weighing in more heavily than they should. Or the marketing people took over. In back offices at Apple, the older generation of developers sit with head in hands, gazing in despair at their mutilated baby? When the development cycle is driven by the marketing cycle, and not vice versa, then we're all f---ed. Well, some of us are.

Was Jobs so caught up with iEverythingelse that he lost track of the Leopard ball?

Maybe Apple will fix some of these things, eventually, but they're unlikely to do so before 10.6, when their pride will allow them to present such improvements as evolved features rather than as fixes.

The faithful will not see it, but this is clearly a company that's losing it again. In years to come, once the cult-of-Mac hysteria round Leopard subsides, Tiger will probably come to be seen as the best OS ever. Meantime, I'm bracing myself for a shift to Ubuntu in a couple of years time, when we might both be ready for each other.

But, granted, Leopard's still better than a Windows PC. Unfortunately, that's not saying much.

David Thomas looks at this week's OpenSSH vulnerability and he calls it a win for Linux. And you know what? He's right.

David calls it a win because of the way Linux distros were proactive in getting the word out. Alerts were posted on blogs, forums made sure people knew what was going on, and even Launchpad purged possibly risky users keys. Plus other community efforts made sure the word got out just as far as possible including LoCos, LUGs, and even user to user messages got out to make sure everyone possible knew what was going on, as well as what was needed to resolve the vulnerability.

David also points out that he's never seen Microsoft get the word out when a vulnerability was discovered, literally beating the bushes to spread the word as far as possible.

I’ve never seen Microsoft handle anything they way this was. This issue did not make me think Linux was less of a system on the contrary I now know the decision to move to Linux was the right thing to do. Again it’s the community that really makes Linux shine, we care about each other, or at the very least Linux users really do believe in if you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours. Yep, I’d call that a win.

Me too, David. Me too.

I'm sure many GMail users would have seen the ubiquitous "Loading" message that pops up in the right-top corner of the browser window while using GMail. It generally pops-up to indicate some work is going on in the background....maybe fetching a message or returning back to the inbox from another folder or even upon deleting spam messages. But today I noticed a totally different "loading" message in GMail:

This, as I signed-in into my GMail account. There was also a 'Loading Standard View | Load basic HTML (for slower connections)' message at the bottom-right corner. Maybe they've changed the loading-sequence and this is a way to tell the users that "hey, we're doing the best we can...maybe you should get a faster connection" :P

Like I had mentioned in my last post, here’s the second article which continues with my though

Like I had mentioned in my last post, here's the second article which continues with my thoughts on Slackware. We'll start with the package management first. Just as RedHat/Fedora packages come as RPM files, and Debian based packages have a .deb extension, Slackware packages come as .tgz files. Slackware provides utilities like installpkg, removepkg, upgradepkg (called pkgtools) to manage packages. But dependency resoution is manual, which can be a big pain sometimes, especially if a package you so urgently need depends on dozens of other packages. That's why most major distros have tools for automatic dependency resolution. For example, Fedora has yum and Debian based distros come with apt-get. Thankfully, a tool similar to apt-get has also been written for Slackware. It's called slapt-get.

Slapt-get is very similar to apt-get in how it works. If there is a package you need, you can do a slapt-get --install <something> and the slapt-get utility searches for the appropriate packages in its repository and downloads it for you. If that <something> depends on <something-else> then that <something-else> is also downloaded and both are installed for you. It's simple enough to use and it has options to remove and upgrade packages like apt-get does.

Now, Ubuntu users, having used the point-and-click Synaptic package manager will probably wonder why anyone would use a command line tool for package management. It is true that some people will not like to use command line utilities and so using slapt-get might seem like an impossible task. Thankfully, there is a GUI tool for package management in Slackware as well. It's called GSlapt and it provides a nice front-end to the slapt-get tools.

Finally, Slackware ships with KDE and while KDE has its share of fans, I personally prefer GNOME. I just think it has a more user-friendly interface. There are some GNOME packages for Slackware available, which means you can install GNOME, even though the distro doesn't ship it. I decided to try out GNOME SlackBuild. The install instructions are fairly simple and you'll need slapt-get to install it. I followed the instructions and downloaded and installed GNOME SlackBuild on my system. Everything seems to work fine, although on my machine, GNOME is definitely not as fast as KDE, and in fact I noticed a delay of almost half a second in loading the menu-icons, which I found a major irritant. Whether the problem is with GNOME SlackBuild, or with GNOME itself or if my hardware is too old for 2.22, I don't know. There are also other Slackware packages for GNOME like Dropline, but I haven't tried them.

Some final thoughts: While Slackware is a pretty good distro, it scores very poorly on the GUI front. When you are using KDE, for instance, you are very aware that it is just an application running on top of the kernel, and the tight integration of the GUI with the rest of the OS like in Ubuntu, is just not there in Slackware. I know it is a conscious decision to keep things simple, but for desktop usage, you would want a much more functional GUI. The other thing is that after I installed Slackware, I realised that I prefer GNOME over KDE and Slackware doesn't ship it. Installing GNOME-for-Slackware builds just isn't the same as GNOME being shipped with the distro. Your menus become messy and you end up getting software which you don't really need, and in the end, you have yet another desktop package that feels like it was put there as an afterthought, not something that came with the OS.

So in the end, I still maintain that installing Slackware was worthwhile thing, simply because I learnt many new things, and even though I might go ahead and install Ubuntu on my machine, any new command or script knowledge will certainly come in handy in future.

Folks, where I live we’re actually having the kind of weather that makes one think about jumpi

Folks, where I live we're actually having the kind of weather that makes one think about jumping into the pool. This reminded me that the time is right for me to re-publish my How To on what to do when your cellphone or laptop gets wet.

From time to time I do something stupid -- like stub my toe or knock my coffee mug over or blurt out a blaspheme in the general vicinity of women and small children.
On my better days, I sometimes do all three at once.

This Saturday I went swimming, and I had my cell phone in the pocket of my shorts. Like I said, stupid. To my credit, I noticed that sad fact quite quickly. But the damage had been done. The phone had suffered not just a spill, but total immersion--submersion--and it was wet. In my defense, it was over a hundred degrees. In the shade.

It is a simple and a natural fact that electronic devices and water (or coffee) don't 'play well together'. It would not in the least be unreasonable to assume that total immersion of an electronic device (such as my phone) would render it, to use a technical term, kaput. Quick action on my part, good fortune, and the fact that I wasn't using the phone underwater (it was "off") combined, in this particular case, for a much happier result, and my phone seems to be no worse for its adventure. (The fact that my make and model phone is very low end probably, to my way of thinking, helped a bit too. It has always struck me that the more costly to replace something is, the more delicate and fragile it is. A cosmic law, perhaps?)

Tip of the day: Rescue your drowned device with quick action.
Should you be suddenly struck with a case of bad luck and/or fumble-fingers, and you spill your drink right onto your keyboard, or you find some other creative way to get liquid onto your digital device, all may not be lost. The quicker, and more effectively you do the following, the better your chances of saving your device from the recycler's heap.

1) The first and most important thing is to turn it off and remove any power source. Shut it down, yank the cord, remove the battery, isolate the dilithium crystals! And do it fast. Some devices, such as those connected to your PC by USB cables, and keyboards, get some voltage through their connecting cable, so also remove any attached cords or cables. Turning it off is not enough. You need to open the cover and remove any batteries. Remember, it is not the moisture which will ruin your device, it's "short circuits", and those are an electrical phenomenon.

2) Get as much of the moisture out as quickly as possible. Pick it up and let gravity drain it as much as possible. You should have the battery cover off already, now open up the device as much as possible. If we're talking about a laptop, remove any PCMCIA cards (PC cards), release and remove the optical drive, and turn it upside down and with a screwdriver remove any access panels -- such as the one covering your RAM chips. If your model allows, release the spring-latches and remove the keypad.
If we're talking about a cellphone or PDA or MP3 player, try "popping" its case with a flat-head screwdriver. If the Web is available on another nearby machine, go online and look at the manufacturer's instructions for opening the device's case. Now that it is opened as much as possible, gently blot with a paper towel, or whatever absorbent material is handy.

[Note: If the liquid you spilled is the kind that dries sticky, such as a soda, you have more work to do. If it's available, use rubbing alcohol (the "purer" the better) and cotton swabs to clean it up as much as you can. If rubbing alcohol is not handy, use water. Yes, water. Distilled if possible.]

Removing the moisture is key: drain and blot what liquid you can see. When that's done, rest assured that there is still more liquid lurking in your device. Now is when absorption and evaporation become our friend. Since it was a hundred degrees outside, I simply left my phone in the sun for several hours. If sunshine is not an option, you can try using a hairdryer set to low (this will take a while), or if you're brave (and ready to stand and keep a close eye), place it in a conventional oven set no higher than 150 degrees, for an hour. In the case of a PDA or phone, you can also carry it, wrapped in tissue or a hanky, close to your body in a pocket. Another trick is to place the device in a sealed plastic bag with a handful of uncooked rice. Replace the rice every couple of hours or so.

3) Regardless of the method used, I strongly advise you to not reassemble and power up your device until the following day. Give evaporation/absorption every chance.

If you are lucky, and have lived a "clean life", your device will power up and function just fine -- good luck and how quickly you removed the power being the key contributors to your success. If, however, you power up and your device functions strangely, or not at all, you may be able to isolate and replace the malfunctioning component (if you're an experienced troubleshooter type). Or you may want to take it in to your friendly neighborhood repair shop and have them do it. Sometimes it is more cost-effective to simply replace the device; your particular situation will vary.

Free link of the day: As my faithful readers know, I am a big proponent of combating the modern plague of adware, spyware, and all sorts of malware. I have posted links for the better free versions of anti-spyware applications in the past. Sometimes though, it pays to invest in a "professional strength" application. The subscription-based anti-spyware application I use is the consistently top-rated Webroot Spy Sweeper. I suggest you try-before-you-buy whenever possible, and to do that with Spy Sweeper, click here.
* update: in the year that has elapsed since this was first posted, I have switched to Spyware Doctor.
Mozilla has released Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1, and it’s almost ready to be released. But

Mozilla has released Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1, and it's almost ready to be released. But now they'd like more of you to check it out and see if you find any bugs that absolutely, positively have to be fixed before Firefox 3 gets its official release.

Of course this is still a testing release and not all extensions and themes have been updated to take work with Firefox 3 yet. And as a testing release it's strongly recommended that you back up your profile before you start Firefox 3. As I said when Ubuntu Hardy got Firefox 3 Beta 5 as the default browser last month, Firefox 3 makes enough changes to your profile to possibly render your profile useless in Firefox 2 so you should set up a new profile for Firefox 3 to use, just in case you dislike all of the (rather drastic) Firefox 3 developers made.

As Mike Beltzner writes on the Mozilla Developer's blog, you should definitely "read the release notes and known issues before installing this release." Asa Dotzler also has some of the benefits awaiting users in Firefox 3 on his blog. Of course you can read my posts here about some of the issues I have with Firefox 3, and Nanci also wrote a review of Firefox 3 from a user's point of view, unlike my posts which are more from a tech and beta tester's point of view.

If after reading all release notes and known issues you still want to give Firefox 3 RC1 a whirl you can grab it from the announcement on the MozDev Blog.

Flash 10 goes Beta as well

Adobe has released a beta of Flash 10, although there are still some issues to be resolved, at least for Linux users. They've also published a page of demos of some of the new features in Flash 10, and I have to admit they're pretty cool. Unfortunately the known bugs in full-screen video and the lack of 64-bit support still need to be resolved and I'm still seeing menus being hidden behind Flash content, but I am seeing improvements in speed for existing Flash content, including the videos on YouTube, Cute Overload and full episodes on NBC.com.

Tom Dryer over at Planet Ubuntu Users has published a page with information on the new beta, including instructions for installing it in Ubuntu Hardy.

Just yesterday I found myself wondering when the next update to Firefox 3 will be coming out. At the time the latest release was beta 5 which it seems we've had for a while now.

Well, good news--Mozilla has released their first release candidate for Firefox 3 and it's available for download right now here for Windows, Mac and Linux users.

Firefox 3 RC1 is, as you'd expect, very similar to beta 5, but there are a few changes:

Improvements to the user interface based on user feedback, including changes to the look and feel on Windows Vista, Windows XP, Mac OS X and Linux.

Changes and fixes for new features such as the location bar autocomplete, bookmark backup and restore, full page zoom, and others, based on feedback from our community.

Fixes and improvements to platform features to improve security, web compatibility and stability.

Continued performance improvements: changes to our JavaScript engine as well as profile guided optimization continues to improve performance over previous releases as measured by the popular SunSpider test from Apple, and in the speed of web applications like Google Mail and Zoho Office.

According to the developer center, it also has dramatic improvements to performance, memory usage and speed.

BlackBerry users will soon have easy access to Windows Live Messenger and Hotmail, courtesy of a new collaboration announced by RIM and Microsoft.

Mark Guibert, vice president of corporate marketing at RIM, said "the BlackBerry platform is respected around the world for providing optimized messaging capabilities and RIM continues to look for ways to provide customers with a wide range of communications options and the best possible mobile experience"

"Our relationship with Microsoft and the addition of Windows Live services to BlackBerry smartphones helps us build on that strategy for our customers."

Windows Live Hotmail for BlackBerry will allow customers to:

Use BlackBerry 'push' technology for automatic message delivery and message synchronization so the customers’ online account is up-to-date with actions taken on their BlackBerry smartphone

Use a dedicated inbox for Windows Live Hotmail messages, which are automatically delivered to the smartphone. Customers can also choose to receive their Windows Live Hotmail messages, along with messages from other e-mail accounts, within a single inbox on their BlackBerry smartphone

Display HTML e-mail with the ability to view graphics, Web links, and contact photos in emails

Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry will allow customers to:

Send instant messages and join group chats

Set status and see the presence of friends and colleagues within Windows Live Messenger or their contact cards

Customize status messages

Save conversations

Showcase their Display Picture (Avatar)

Send and receive pictures and files

Use more than 60 emoticons

Look for these new services to be available sometime this summery.

Here's a 20" (2.4 Ghz) and my new 24" iMac (2.8Ghz / 4Gb RAM / 320Gb HD / Wireless Keyboard + Mouse) side by side on my very congested desk. By next week, things will be better once I send the 20" unit off to its new owner. Still got some time to clear off some of my "stuff" on the 20" and make sure no "edison chen" incident will take place. Then again, I am not into what he's into, so I'm safe.

One of the projects I've been working on involved choosing between Vista and XP for the desktops. The primary LOB application vendor said they supported and worked fine on Vista except you had to turn off UAC. This took me by surprise so I spoke with their support and engineering departments...the one and only reason they have customers turn off UAC, so you don't get the prompt when you launch the app off the server over a mapped drive!

After a few more minutes trying to see if there was some other reason that was really the issue it was confirmed, this was the one and only reason for stating to turn off UAC. Ok, maybe I'm missing something here and what I think should work really won't work....to to the test systems.

I added the server to the Local Intranet Zone and tried launching the app on the test system while logged in as a standard user. Worked like it should, no warning or confirmation prompts. So I now have a bunch of shiny new computers on the way with Vista so I can cut down on the clean up crap that is currently being done regularly with Win2k and XP by running the systems as regular users.

Note, to get to the settings page to add sites open Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Internet Options -> Select the Security tab -> Highlight the Local Intranet icon and click Sites -> Click the Advanced button-> Add you sites.

I happened to see some videos in youtube about MOBO 2007 contest conducted by organisation of robots for line following bots..

Amazing .. But what I noticed was very few of them followed a line correctly ...But some where making it even for multilines and curves ..

Between I would like to announce here that some our classmates(sajitha and team) have successfully completed a line following robot . It is working for all angles above 90 degree and even curves ..I was thinking of my old friend's words . "They(foreigners) have money and hard work but no brain power .. We(Indians) have only brain power . What to do ? Flee out from India" -David Sir . (He is a traveller and talker .. He might not be remembering me . He is now just a travel agency owner losing all his buses )

Whenever we start a robot we'll be stuck at the body arrangement .The alignment of the wheels is an imporatant thing which we won't notice . Last time when we made one the same problem made us look for a ready-made body .Anyway its awesome to have a slave for us .Better ,when it is a robot .

Between I can't find any atmega 8 burning circuits in internet eventhough we can do it using the same configurationss as atmega 16 . For my own better access I am uploading one here ..

Christian Martin offers us a special summer promotional mix.

Get the Glass is a really neat little online board game. It won a prestigious Black Pencil design award from D&AD in the category of 'Animation and Motion Graphics', which is apparently some serious kudos.

D&AD don't award the black pencil award, their top category, unless they've got something that is worth giving it to. If not... no award that year.

This game, though, is great. It's basically a big advertisement aimed at getting people to drink milk because of its benefits (which you will learn of as you play). It's fun, and looks great.

I scored about 4700. See if you can beat it.

[UPDATE: Played again: First I got caught, then scored 5300.]
