After 2 months of no activity here I finally got the time to post something (hoho!). A lot of the folks here are busy (or lazy) so yep, sorry 'bout that. As for me, my job is taking most of my time. (for those who care, I'm graphic designer D:)

BTW, you guys might want to check this blog from a friend of mine. It's called "Gaming Matters" and it tackles mostly about the international as well as the local (meaning MMO) gaming scene. Cool stuff.

I haven't played some games recently since my day job is leeching most of my "me" time. But this last weekend I had the time to play Team Fortress 2 (again!). The guys from Valve sure know how to make a game last and enjoyable. Personally I'm liking their idea of releasing a multiplayer game that is fun and complete, then they release updates like new weapons and maps to make the game more interesting. The other thing that I like about these updates is that it adds variety on how you play classes via new weapon loadouts without making the class too powerful.

So far the Medic, Pyro and Heavy class have been given this treatment. Medics can now survive alone with their new Syringe Gun, Pyros now have a way to burn you in longe range, and the Heavy class can now survive without a Medic (Thanks to his Sandvich)! Updates like these make the game last, "deeper" and change the metagame.

With updates like these, I dare say that TF2 will last for another year or 2. I can't wait what's in store for the Soldier and Scout classes though. Here's hoping that the Scout will get better handgun and the Soldier having a replacement for his shotgun! Oh! and give the Demoman grenades! And the Engineer a new sentry gun! And the Spy a cigasdlkwnaodnaslnlfknsdlfsdlcvklvnspenfklnsdflknsdlfksndf

This week there are a few new video games out. Since we here at EPICponyz usually like to use our 360's, we will commonly just touch on those games they release for the console. But, we will do some bigger releases on other consoles. This week you can pick up Facebreaker or Viva Pinata 2. Viva Pinata 2's marketing team really did a poor job this time around. I haven't seen one commercial on TV for this game, but loads for Facebreaker.

Ok, I'll have to say I've played a lot of First Person Shooters in my day and to date I believe Team Fortress 2 is by far the best. The game delivers on so many categories that it's not even funny. First off the Art Style (which a lot may not like because it's too cartoonish) is absolutely gorgeous. If you understand why the developers went the way they did you appreciate it even more. The game play is so on point. The uses what I would consider "real" class based game play as opposed to other games that claim to have it. With this in tow you can play the game the way you want to maximize the pleasure you get from playing. Lastly it takes on true teamwork in order to succeed in winning the round or match you are playing. Sure you can go lone wolf style but you may not always come out the victor :(.

Well I know this post is kind of short, but I just wanted to have another post and thought I could write this up a praise for the game that takes up a majority of my free time. Anyway, if you have a decent gaming computer (doesn't require a super machine) and would like to play are really fun FPS game. Then check out TF2. You can download it straight from steam for $19.99. Once you do that head over to www.teamfortress2fort.com and play on our servers. We'd love to have ya!

I know it's been forever since I've posted, but things have picked up for me recently. Since I've been so busy, and it's not like this blog actually makes me any money, it's kind of fallen by the wayside.

Since I last posted, I've taken on two new jobs. The first, as kind of a side gig, is that I've begun to write reviews for Game Revolution. My first review, of the game 1942: Joint Strike, should be posted soon, and I've been working on another one this week for Bionic Commando Rearmed. I'm just doing Xbox Live Arcade games so far, since it's easy for GR to send me a redeemable code, and so far I'm just getting free games out of it, but hey, free games!

On a more career-oriented note, in eleven days I will be starting work in QA at Blue Fang Games. It's entry-level, sure, but it's a foot in the door of the industry in which I've wanted to work since I was five years old, drawing old Nintendo Power-style level layouts for imaginary platformers. (I created multiple concepts for a Calvin & Hobbes game of which I was particularly proud.)

Blue Fang is known for the Zoo Tycoon series, which I've always respected for the fact that it took the "tycoon" name, which often guarantees a game is shovelware, and actually made a quality franchise to go along with it. It joins Roller Coaster Tycoon and Railroad Tycoon in that respect, so it's in good company.

Needless to say, I'm thrilled. Blue Fang is based in Waltham, MA, near Boston, so I've spent the last week or so looking at places to live in the area. At this point, I've missed the September 1 move-in, but I'm heading back down to the city tomorrow to keep looking.

So between everything that's been going on, I haven't had a whole lot of time to spend on The Literary Gamer, or even gaming, for that matter. (Although I did finally unlock all the weapons for my medic and pyro in Team Fortress 2, that was like, two weeks ago.)

Don't worry, TLG is not dead, and I expect my posts to become a bit more exciting now that I've actually kick-started a career in the games industry.

Within the next few days/week I will be making the next piece of work in the Meet The PANDA's series. At the moment I'm thinking about creating one as PANDA | Jarhead as the Heavy for the reason that the Heavy update is the most recent update to come out.

I'm also leaning towards Akabane as a Sniper based on how much he's played that class, and for the other PANDA's I'm going to have to wait for them to get back to me. At the same time, it'd be a great thing for me too since each piece of work will be a learning experience by setting the bar higher after each piece of work.

It should be a pretty exciting set once they're all out.

Entry from the Sniper's Voice Journal (tape 17, minutes 17-18):

Sniping a whacka in the head is a great thing, mate. You take a squizz through your scope to see a seppo gobsmacked with another hole through the noggin. Back at the HQ, they are worth a skite.

But, you don't want to jumbuck with headshots the whole time. Those snipers seem to have tickets on themselves, but it's really nothing spiffy. Don't want to figjam with the amount of third-eyes I've pinned, but the ripper shots are the ones I brag about. Seeing a ruski turn the corner with his old greaser, only to make him keel over when you shot him through the avos. Now that'll have anybody grinning like a shot fox.

Team Fortress 2 is such a fast paced game that one usually misses such glorious moments of Valve artistry as shown below. I set my screenshot program to take them every 5 seconds at max resolution. 95% of the screenshots are garbage (e.g., running to the fight, watching others run to the fight, etc.), and 4.8% are worthy of a 3-second reminiscing of the time I played. The 4.8% are not worthy of posting. Screenshots like this set the bar for the worthy 0.2%.

One of the best multiplayer games ever, Team Fortress 2, has many uses. The above image is one of those unlimited uses. Now, I just found this yesterday, but it has been up for quite some time. And I'm really sorry that I can't give full credit to whoever really made this. Someone took the infamous "Magic Trick" scene from The Dark Knight and recreated it with Team Fortress 2. I honestly love this Machinima so much, very well done.

This post is going to start with an unfortunate confession which could very well estrange me from my substantial reading audience of one person.

I don't like CoD4 multiplayer.

I do like Halo multiplayer.

I really like Team Fortress 2. (I'm not going to say "multiplayer" because that's pretty bloody obvious.)

I think the problem is - you may have guessed this by the title - I don't like thinking when I'm shooting people. In Halo - that's Halo 1, I really have come to realise the multiplayer in the last two was rubbish - fights involved a bare minimum of thinking and were mostly about aiming (and the pistol. Ohhh yes, the pistol.) In Team Fortress 2 I get an enjoyable mix - I can think about my strategy, kill somebody, then go back to thinking again. But CoD4? Oh man. I have to be thinking constantly about my enemy's positions, claymores, my enemy's weapons, airstrikes, helicopters - even the quality of the very cover I'm hiding behind!

I'm sorry, but it's just too much for my tiny brain to take!

Now stop talking to me about CoD >_>

(Unless it's about the singleplayer.)

I was one week away, and have then spend the 6 days after that by getting the Heavy unlockables from TF2, thus explaining the lack of post for this time. Of course, after playing this much (22.2 hours to be precise) I have got some new nice screenshots.

Little bug I found:

So, that was it for today, I now have all Heavy unlockables, so I can kick some ass with those gloves in my boxing ring map I'm creating. Spy skins are still delayed, as I can't find anything to do with the sapper.

Copy of the Pyro’s Journal - Entry from August 28, 2008
This entry is to be used for BLU-HR purposes only.

Once, when a group of REDs were traveling to the payload entrance together by the same engineer's nest, it happened that their teleporter struck near the payload late at night. Five or six REDs from the nest leapt to defend the payload and loudly demanded that BLU give up the bomb, in accord with the Corporate Manifesto. Hearing this, BLU ran forward yelling, "The RED Corporate Manifesto is something for people like you! Do you think that we warriors are going to let you take equipment from a payload carried by pyros? We will burn you down and throw you underneath the payload cart to the last man!" With that, all the RED agents fled back to the engineer's nest.

A BLU pyro once said, "What is called winning is defeating one's allies. Defeating one's allies is defeating oneself, and defeating oneself is vigorously burning the dross from one's own body.
"It is as though a man were in the midst of ten thousand allies but not a one were following him. If one hasn't previously mastered his mind and body, he will not defeat the enemy.''

One cannot accomplish things simply with enthalpy. One must take a broad view. It will not do to make blazing judgments concerning good and evil. However, one should not be cold and sluggish. It is said that one is not truly a pyro if he does not make his decisions quickly and break right through to completion.

Well I played a bit of tf2 today. I have been rather busy lately, with college stuff and going to portland and what not. So I sit down to play tf2, and today I felt like playing as demoman.

I played for only three rounds on badwater, since I haven't played much of that map. I had a great start, on team red I managed to get about 5 kills per death, which is pretty good. Before long I was in the thirties, but not quite at the top, since this was a 24/7 server, there were some people who have been playing for a few hours before I joined, with over 100 points. Anyways, we won that round, and it sure was glorious.

Then the teams flipped, so now we were blu. My team conisted of 3 snipers, 3 heavies, a demo, a scout, a spy, and a soldier or two. And hence, I had a bit of rage start to build inside of me. Snipers are not useful on pl_ maps, especially on offense, and so I continued to try to get them to switch classes, to a medic or something useful. The round began, and we did a full out rush. Our snipers were nowhere to be seen, and our heavies were being rather useful. In under a minute we made it to the first cp, making wonderful progress as opposed to the enemy team, who last round nearly lost before making it this far. We continued to push, with me clearing those far away pyros and spies (who were pretty good at revealing themselves.

We made it all the way to the second to last cp, where we had held at that chokepoint, before the downhill slide to red's base. There we fought for nearly ten minutes, where neither team made any progress, as we held for what felt like eternity. I decided to go down this corridor, after avoiding a spy trying to facestab and a pyro with his axetinguisher. I found what appeared to be a sniper hideout, which looked down upon the final cap, where the bomb was meant to be dumped at. I walked up to the window, and found a level 3 sentry staring right at me, pushing me back. I wasn't able to get a good look on things, but luckily I was a demoman, and a demoman was built for this kind of situation.

I lobbed my grenades out the window and down towards where I expected the sentry to be. I had killed three people who were using a dispensor, which I also took out. I wounded the sentry to the point where it no longer fired at me (although this could be from my team finally pushing the cart downhill). The smoke and fire was quite a site, and I launched the grenade that I expected to be the one that takes the sentry out.

Then, a soldier popped in my way, rocket jumping to destroy me from this sniping window, and launched two rockets in before falling back down. He had taken my grenade damage, instead of me happening to destroy the sentry. luckily, I had a friendly medic healing me, which he then decided to leave after what he thought was me killing the soldier. All of a sudden, the soldier pops up to replicate what he had just recently did, but this time, a crit rocket happened to land in my face. Turns out to be a friend who happened to be on this server.

All in all, our team lost, and next game was rather bland. I quit the game due to snipers, and decided I should post about how much I hate snipers.

Doesn't look like I had made much progress.

I'm off to make ramen and do my laundry now.
