Coaches are facilitators. They enable their players to play the game. A coach is not a programmer, the players or not robots.

This philosophy is essential in spreading the gospel on the frontier lines of world rugby. If Rugby is to ever compete with soccer and other global sports the key is to make the game simple, both for coaches to coach and players to learn. Encourage attacking play, foster it and let the players learn the game for themselves.

Between the ELV's and the IRB directive to referees that the breakdown should now be 'contested,' keeping the ball off the ground and away from contact is even more fundamental. Encourage your players to keep the ball in two hands, create options and show your players how to run strong support lines that generate line breaks. Attack the line!

Set up a 10-a-side hybrid game of rugby league and rugby union. No rucks, no breakdown. 4/5 tackles. 9 sweeps ball away once tacker is brought to ground. If any player plays the ball with one hand it is a straight turnover, no questions asked. No leniency, no exceptions.

The transition is immediate. Players will run at space while preserving more space on the outside or inside. Options are created left and right, gaps open up and first there are line breaks with the ball carrier, followed by line breaks by support players who are put into space. Encourage your players to run lines off the ball carrier. Even the weaker players will begin to see spaces opening up. Meanwhile the defenders are at sea struggling with who or what to mark. The ball is kept alive, handling, talk and strong running are all improved and everyone enjoys the session.

A few weeks of this and players will be playing heads-up without any need for encouragement. No cones, no drills, no long winded coaching T-talks. Just a game, some coaxing and a rule: two hands on the ball!

Here is the video I put together for my U8 rugby team presentation evening.

Duncan Jones, the Wales and Osprey loosehead prop, gave away the medals to the boys. He was an excellent role model, talking quietly to each boy as they came up to shake hands.

Anyway, it was our last season of tag rugby. Onto rugby tackling, mauling and rucking!

Tag rugby season is here. Its difficult to know what make of it all-In Ireland alone we've got 3 different set-ups ,Volvic Tag, Rip Rugby and the, ahem, IRFU offering complete with alcohol sponsorship and Alain Rolland.

Although Volvic Tag and the ITRA really blow the IRFU out of the water with this.

Most of the venues are full up at this stage with the first kick about in a few weeks. At the moment its near impossible to get a patch in Herbert Park in the evening to play a bit of tip, what with all the social tagging going down.

I'm not fully sold on tag. The social leagues are fine and a good laugh, but at the higher end where it gets very competitive the reffing is questionable (with or without Alain), the skill of tagging can't be transferred from 'contact' and the game can often lack the finer points that make touch rugby so good.

And the IRFU alcohol sponsorship deal is despicable.

Impreza multikulturowa i hardkorowa. Alex zrobił sangrie (2 wielkie michy) i chyba ze 40 mojitos. A potem szkolił mnie w katalońskich toastach i przyśpiewkach (que se quema? Madrit!

A teraz pora dać odpocząć moim starym kościom.
Do następnego razu!
