Sony Ericsson’s 1st entry into the Windows Mobile device was announced in February 2008 (read

Sony Ericsson's 1st entry into the Windows Mobile device was announced in February 2008 (read here). After that, nothing much was heard. SE alluded to a 2nd half availability of the device. Given my experience with Windows Mobile device development and marketing, it's not easy to come out with a quantum leap device to overtake the market leaders like HTC and Samsung who have had a few more years of experience working on such devices. SE's Xperia X1 does show a lot of promise for a 1st product and given all the specifications and pictures of the device, I must say that it is indeed a sweet little baby of a device and much better looking than the Nokia E90 for sure.

But is it still coming to town after all this while?

I'm awaiting the little bird to whisper to me more information about the X1 and I'm particularly interested in the X1 coming to Malaysia. For now, we do know that we can expect SE to bring it out in mid-September. Handango's Content Partner Newsletter revealed that the X1 will be launched in mid-September (read here). We shall see as 4th Quarter 2008 comes around. Hutchinson's 3 is rumored to have a November schedule (read here).

The more interesting news I think is the rumor that the X1 is made by HTC (read here). That is totally plausible. HTC was originally an ODM (original device manufacturer) for Palm Treo as well as O2 before the advent of Dopod and the HTC brand. It is entirely possible that HTC is going back to ODM work given SE is a great brand to work with and this gives SE a springboard with a very reliable manufacturer with leadership experience in working with Windows Mobile and Microsoft.

SE cannot have gone directly to start the Microsoft relationship now given their commitment to Symbian OS device development and expect to do a credible 1st Windows Mobile product. So if SE didn't go to someone like HTC, the X1 may remain a hopeful but not there device or another by the wayside and bites the dust before it becomes real product, the many Windows Mobile bygones and to the WM obituary before its time.

You can read the X1 official specs here but the unofficial specs look more complete here.

Stay tuned for more Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1 news for Malaysia right here. Don't go away! All I can safely say now is that Sony Ericsson is working hard to get the X1 out the door and I trust right to Malaysia soon!

Given the recent developer discontentwith Android SDK from Google, it is clear that Google is learni

Given the recent developer discontentwith Android SDK from Google, it is clear that Google is learning what it takes to bring a quality Mobile OS to market. However, according to this report, analyst Jack Gold thinks, Google should tie up with the Symbian foundation and forget about Android. Now, that would make a lot of sense. Google could contribute its OS to the Symbian foundation, be a major player on the foundation and devote its resource to its core strength of developing multi-platform applications.

Google still contend that an Android-based device, aka the GPhone, will be out in the second half of 2008. Certainly, the pressure is mounting with iPhone 3G out in the wild, and RIM, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG announcing a stellar lineup for the rest of year (see this post for RIM, this post for Nokia, this post for Sony Ericsson, post one and two for Samsung, and this one for LG). Not to mention, yesterday's Microsoft employee memo by Steve Ballmer hinting at a Zune phone on the horizon. So is GPhone a pipe dream? I think not, and blogosphere certainly does not think so. However, when will it launch is debatable. I believe that Google will most probably announce the GPhone in 2009 at their major developer shin-dig.

Symbian and Android to make love, not war
The launch of Android, Google’s open-source OS for m

[caption id="attachment_14" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Symbian and Android to make love, not war"][/caption]
The launch of Android, Google's open-source OS for mobile phones, was postponed . As a consequence, a majority of carriers and handset vendors have pushed the launch of their Android-powered smart phones to the end of the year or beginning of next year. In the meantime, Nokia acquired Symbian and then released this dominant mobile OS in open source. Many believed that this was a prelude to a head-on collision with Android but it looks like the two are headed for more of a beast with two backs relationship than a tap out.

"We expect that within the next 3-6 months, Symbian and Android will combine to provide a single open-source operating system," said Jack E. Gold, founder and principal analyst at J. Gold Associates, who has been tracking computer, electronics and mobile phone spaces over 35 years. "Many of the same sponsors are involved in both initiatives."

"The question is, how many open source mobile platforms do we need? The mobile market does not need more divergence. It needs convergence, and this would be a way to accomplish this," said Gold. "The mobile market needs some level of consolidation of platforms if it is to make big leaps forward, as developers currently struggle to make their applications available on so many divergent platforms." Other key players in the mobile OS arena are Windows Mobile, Palm and Apple.

Reasoning behind the merger
Google has already slipped with Android, the analyst notes. The search giant would be better served if it focused on bringing its services and cross-device applications to the mobile phone space where it can leverage its advertising engine to generate substantial revenues. Symbian already enjoys dominant market share in smart phones but it could benefit from some Android features that could fill its own gaps. Gold thinks that an open version of Symbian "won't be available for 18-24 months so there is ample time to combine the two code bases, combining the best of both into a consolidated OS."

The most important reason for the merger is the fact that Symbian partners have realized that competing in the OS market is not where they need to be. Instead, mobile phone vendors should concentrate on providing a compelling end user experience and service offerings. By releasing resources allocated to the OS development, phone vendors can concentrate their efforts on generating new revenue streams by selling games, music, videos, applications and premium services. Most key players have already learned this lesson.

Nokia in particular is focused on expanding service offerings and it acquired couple of established online properties to complete the puzzle. The fruit of these efforts is OVI, Nokia's online service that aims to be a one-stop shop for music, games and user-generated content, connecting and sharing users who do not necessarily have to own Nokia-branded device. Gold says that such end-user services can keep users loyal to the brand and generate substantial revenues.

Apple has learned this lesson long ago with its computers and is repeating the strategy with the iPhone. The company first brought the iTunes music store to the iPhone and then it introduced App Store to enable users to browse, download and buy third-party iPhone applications directly on the handset. Apple takes 30 percent of whatever developers charge for their applications. The Cupertino-based gadget maker also has high hopes for the recently introduced MobileMe suite of online services which offers 20GB of online storage, push email, calendar and contacts and seamless synchronization capabilities for the iPhone for $99 a year.

A gargantuan task
When you look at it from the computer industry perspective, the desktop OS market converged in its infancy and it came down to today's three basic choices: Windows, OS X or various flavors of UNIX. We have a feeling that the mobile OS is moving in this direction and will ultimately end up with three choices: Symbian, Windows Mobile and the iPhone OS (it's doubtful that mobile Linux variants will sustain market consolidation).

But combining Android and Symbian into a single product could be a gargantuan task, especially if the new OS has to provide backwards compatibility with the existing library of Symbian applications and the upcoming library of Android applications. Symbian has already said it will undertake major efforts to merge code bases from its supporting partners (Symbian, Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, DoCoMo) into a new platform that will be able to run legacy applications. Gold thinks this is the opportunity to add the Android code base as well.

"Now would be the time to add another code base rather than doing it sometime down the road when things are more fixed," , he said in an email interview with TGDaily. Ultimately, the final outcome will be decided by politics. "It is the Symbian board who will make that decision, based on the voting shares of its members," said Gold.

We have also noted that an android and a symbian melding together would honor the late Philip K. Dick , and provide a better ending to Blade Runner than the numerous endings already provided.

Lagian masa baru 1-2 hari, udah nulis review; nanti kurang akurat doang. Hehehe...

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="275" caption="Nokia E71 Gray Steel (gambar dari GSM Arena)"][/caption]
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="275" caption="Nokia E71 White Steel (gambar dari GSM Arena)"][/caption]

Wokeh kita mulai ya.

Desain

http://news.mobile9.com/s60apps/2008/07/24/s60-browser-issues-part-2/

I have a Nokia N95 myself (an S60-based phone, such as that mentioned in the articles above) and love it to death, except - and this is a huge exception - for the web browser.

Granted, while the S60 browser is leaps and bounds above the browsers on other non-smartphones and Windows Mobile devices (Pocket Internet Explorer blows!), it comes nowhere close to the browser on the iPhone. It's not just the lack of touch screen or having a smaller screen either.

I *can*, believe it or not, read non-mobile formatted websites on my N95. The core of the browser is actually very similar to the browser in the iPhone, and many iPhone-specific sites work quite well on the N95.

However, as you can see from these pictures (sourced from news.mobile9.com), the browser still has it's large share of rendering issues:

Desktop Browser:

S60 Browser:

Nokia, Symbian, for any of you out there listening, the iPhone is *slaughtering* you in terms of browsing capability. I've seriously considered selling my N95 to get the iPhone 3G, but I'm still very disappointed in the iPhone OS in general (way too locked down, Apple style; no background applications, etc.)

Please, please, pretty please, work on an update for the S60 browser that fixes the rendering issues and the frequent crashes! Thank you in advance!

[caption id="attachment_539" align="alignleft" width="320" caption="Quickoffice 5 Premier"][/caption]

Everyday I seem to find more and more ways to play with my E61i.

Everyday I seem to find more and more ways to play with my E61i.

Python is a extremely powerful language , wich is finding everyday more and more ways to apply itself to the mobile world.

So this is how you would go on about pairing your S60 phone with Windows XP.

The hardware used is Nokia E61i (S60 3rd), Dikom Bluetooth USB dongle, Easynote R0933 with Windows XP on it.

I will be trying this asap on Ubuntu.

Bluetooth is supported natively on XP , but if you don't have it set up yet, here's the Broadcom installation file.

After that, PythonS60 is to be installed on the phone. Passed though cable, SD card, etc
Here's the Sourceforge page.

Once Bluetooth support is installed ( if you needed to ), open the Bluetooth Configuration from the Control Panel:

During the installation process, the setup will help you to pair the devices. Just make sure they're active.

Now we should create a few COM ports on our BT device, on the Local Services tab , for testing purposes.

This will then reflect itself on the listing:

Open the Windows Hyper Terminal from the Run.. dialog:

Follow the procedure as requested from the dialog. More or less, depending if you already have a Hyperteminal setup or not, the steps for a new connection are as follows.

Choose a name and icon, for this connection.

Choose the COM port that ou want the connection to be placed on. I choose COM7 since it was created for this purpose

On the COM port properties, for my BT device, i found it neccessary to restore defaults and set the Bits per second to 9600

Afterwards all we have to do is wait for an incoming call on this port:

I'm assuming that the Python shell installation file is already on the phone. Installed and working.

We open the shell:

and if all is good it should already start running:

From the Options menu we choose to open the Bluetooth shell:

And choose the same COM port that we choose on the HyperTerminal:

Once this port is choosen, the Python shell from your phone will immediately echo on the Hyperterminal of the computer:

At the very end, without getting too much into it, let's give the product a shot:

Enjoy!

Early last year it occurred to me that with the increasing proliferation of fast flat-rate mobile da

Early last year it occurred to me that with the increasing proliferation of fast flat-rate mobile data there should be a mobile client for last.fm. It soon also occurred to me that no such thing was available.

Having a Nokia N73 handy and a flat rate data package with 3 Mobile, I set about discovering the vagaries of the last.fm API and it's shoutcast stream. After a few weeks of tinkering, Blastfm was born which allowed the stream to be controlled while it was played by the Open Source Nokia Internet Radio player.

It quickly became apparent through trawling the web that there were other people that would also like to have access to their last.fm radio streams on the move and, furthermore, not all of them had Symbian S60 devices. I began porting the application to j2me. Yeah, right... How naive I was. Getting the application running in Sun's emulator was easy but as far as I know there is not a single device on the market that implements mp3 streaming over http properly in its virtual machine. After many hours experimentation I gave up, having abjectly failed to achieve seamless audio streaming in any real j2me implementation.

Still, all was not lost. I still had the Symbian application to develop. Yeah, until a recent upgrade to the audioscrobbler api I did. The Shoutcast stream, while it still exists, no longer responds to tuning, skipping, banning of tracks or anything else.

Further development of this concept will require parsing of .xspf playlists and streaming mp3s within the application rather than utlizing an external application for audio playback as the previous version did.

I have nearly given up again, but there remains enthusiasm for such an application. I will come back to it one day...

But if anyone else wants to have a play:

The blastfm application for S60 3rd edition is downloadable at http://m3solutions.co.uk/documents/blastfm.sis

Python source code is published at

After designing a lot of icons for symbian in bitmap and svg , finally I got the solution with SVG Tiny 1.2 using Adobe Illustrator, I'm going to mention step by step process of creating SVG icon for Symbian mobile device using Adobe Illustrator.

1) Open your Logo/Icon in Illustrator (The graphic needs to be Ungroup and vector)

2) Copy your Vector icon and paste it in a new document with RGB profile (as per required dimension in pixels).

3) Go to File>>Save for Web & Devices

4) Select SVG in the top most dropdown

5) Select SVG Tiny 1.2 in the second drop down

6) Select UTF-8

7) Click Save

and you are done.

It worked perfect in Nokia N73 and Nokia N95

Pretty neat picture, huh? Since I recently purchased a new Nokia N95, one of the first things to do was of course to find a decent calculator app to put on it. The one pre-installed is OK, I guess... if you just need the REAL basics. But it was actually darn difficult to find other choices. This one was the best I could do on my first day of looking...

I got a little disappointed, I have to say, because it was not really a calculator app per se, and it was not really all the useful either. All it does it letting you play with parameteres in some expressions to see how it affects the graphical output. An OK teaching idea, but where can I find a TI83 clone for my Nokia!?!? There must be something out there... (for free :-)
