In one of my more recent blogs, I wanted the readers to vote on the ‘Ugliest Cards From the 80

In one of my more recent blogs, I wanted the readers to vote on the 'Ugliest Cards From the 80's'. You can read that blog here. The 1983 Fleer card was the biggest loser, and it was for good reason.

But the more I began to think about this, one of my readers(Gerad) mentioned the 1982 Fleer set because it lacked the Fleer logo. Initially it didn't effect me, but his comment makes complete sense to me now.

Check out a sample:

OK. I work for a direct-to-consumer company. I have worked there for 8 years and prior to that I was in retail management for another 7 years. I think I have a pretty good understanding of customer expectations due to my personal experience.

Branding is everything!!! It really is just that simple. This card illustrates the exact opposite. Nowhere on the front of the card do you see the Fleer logo. Nowhere on the front of the card do you see the team's logo. The front of the card is as important as the window of a department store. It's a tool that should be used to draw in the customer and Fleer did not do this. Signs, banners, logos, and color all get attention. It's clear that Fleer(wow that rhymes) had a license to produce items with MLB logos otherwise Ripken's logo on his jersey and hat would have been removed. But to not include them in the design of the card is just plain dumb.

The logo means everything. Picture Nike without the Swoosh. Picture Coca-Cola cans without their famous script signature. Hell, picture Coors beer without the Rocky Mountains in the background. All of these companies use specific logos and placement with their products. Even if it is not the thing that draws you in, you subconsciously see the logo and are comforted that you are dealing with a quality product.

The problem is that these companies are and have been well established. Fleer on the other hand was in it's infancy stage in the early 80's and should not have abandoned the logo they used in 1981, or at least used a new one with the 1982 issue. This card reminds me of a plain business card with black type. No frills, nothing fancy... There is nothing to draw you in. There is no connection to a team. How did they expect to captivate an audience and pull people towards their product and away from the competition?

What I am saying here is not news. This is common practice in the Advertising and Marketing world. Brand recognition is the most important thing to offer any consumer and Fleer failed miserably...

Thanks again Gerad for shining a light on the 'Ultimate Dud', 1982 Fleer.

Ok, so I went to Old Navy on Thursday and picked up some jeans and a couple pair of pants. I'm wearing my black ones today and I feel like George on Seinfeld when he had that noisy suit. I'm whooshing all over the place. It's really annoying, but slightly funny!

Nothing really new has been going on. I'm still working all the time and I'm so exhausted. All I want to do is sleep. I'm still addicted to Flickr in every way and feel like I need to check it every two seconds. I was babysitting my mom's bird, Pip, for a week or so and she finally came and picked him up on Saturday. Thank the heavens! I love him, but he is so loud. And he bites. I also ended up entering this contest for Belfort Furniture for the ugliest couch. The couch I have now my mom got when we lived in Florida. Which was....1988. And right now, it's being held together by tape and a dream. It's ripped apart on the side from where my cat used it as a scratching post and you need the jaws of life to get back off the couch one you sit down. It's covered by a slipcover at the moment, but it would be great to win, so I wouldn't have to invest in a new couch myself.

I'm still waiting for my copy of Breaking Dawn to come in. I'm dying to read it!

Ok, gotta get back to work.

These are the words found at the end of my instructions to my sister, to be used when I'm at the end of my rope (literally).

Having watched my mother's dragging along for several months caught up in the end stages of Altzheimer's, I wanted it known beyond a doubt exactly what I want to have happen to me in the event I ever end up in that or a similar situation, for any reason.

The complete quote?

"Bring me a constant flow of tasty alcoholic drinks, and keep giving them to me until I'm no longer able to keep my eyes open and I enter REM state (or perhaps I should say RUM state). Anyway, after a few minutes have gone by, take a large soft pillow and press it down tightly over my face and hold it there until I stop kicking. And then, keep the pressure on for at least five more minutes to be sure it's done. Finally, wait for a few hours to go by before calling the paramedics and reporting that you just came over to visit and found that I'm not breathing.

Not much room for ex-post-facto after thoughts on this, as they say in those old shoe ads, "Just do it".

Swoosh!, and I've left the planet.....

Tytuł: No logo
Autor: Naomi Klein
Wydawnictwo: Świat literacki
Przekład: Hanna Pustuła
ISBN-10: 83-88612-77-8

A szkoda!

This post is in response to Sean François' post at sportscandor.blogspot.com. He posted in response to a Wall Street Journal article I sent him on Nike's move into corporate responsibility and environmentalism.

Check his post and then read mine.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who are you kidding, Sean?!!? When you were a kid Nike was called Blue Ribbon Sports! j/k You're not that old. And if you were, I wouldn't be saying nothin'. <smirk>

I appreciated your post. I am with you on the Nike link to childhood. I did not become loyal until after my Dee Brown Pumps phase, but none-the-less I have donated my fair share. And I know for sure that the book "Just Do It - The Nike Spirit in the Corporate World", read during High School, shaped some of my thoughts on how to approach business.

One of my disappointments with Nike over the years, including Mr. Knight and Mr. Jordan, was their ambivalence to the social issues surrounding their products. They used their aggressive mentality in defending themselves, rather than on being social leaders. I have never been one to oppose using the use of cheap labour, I am with Jeffrey Sachs on that one, but the workers conditions (sweatshops), repeated company denials proved false and apparent policy of looking the other way were indefensible. It is certainly nice to see them acknowledging their need to be responsible and lead the way. And it is nice to see their move into environmentally conscious shoes fronted by Steve Nash. He is a good Canadian sports role model and it's great that he took the initiative on this one.

Little known fact: the Nike Air system for sneaker cushioning was developed by another company and sold to Nike. That company offered the concept to Reebok first, but were rejected.

Second fact: Phil Knight purchased the Swoosh logo (the wing of Nike - the Greek goddess of Victory) and all usage rights from one of his students for a one time payment of $35US.

In this case, the selvage sits perfectly on the top of the midsoles and is complimented by the black denim and black leather body. To add to already impressive design they topped it all off with a snakeskin swoosh. The final model will also be coming with Starks Laces, and be soon released at Royalefam.

"Do you like to Do It Yourself?" My man Hopi does so check back for some of his custom kicks, and if you would like us to feature your designs don't be shy to hit up THC.

by lestro

So the emo/punk/rock band Alkaline Trio has officially sold out to the point where I don

by lestro

So the emo/punk/rock band Alkaline Trio has officially sold out to the point where I don't think I will ever be able to hear one of their old songs without spitting.

Because not enough people think "dark punk" when they think of overpriced athletic shoes, the Trio's teamed with Nike for to design a Trio-branded athletic shoe.

Makes me want to fucking vomit.

It's one thing to license a song to a commercial to try and find a new audience. I may not like it, but I understand why bands do it. And in today's day and age, where art, design and commercialism all swim in the same lane at the pool, it's just another delivery system.

But teaming with motherfucking Nike? You have to be kidding me.

"Seeing the swoosh and our logo on one product is unbelievable," singer/guitarist Matt Skiba said in a statement. "The shoe looks amazing and provides some insight into who we are."

Yeah, you are fucking sellout pieces of shit with no soul and now, every piece of "art" your goth pussy punk asses have ever written is suspect. Even the shit you did with Hot Water Music. Even their brilliant covers of your particular brand of gloomy medio-core punk are suspect.

We're on to you Alkaline Trio. And you will never get another cent from me.

Hell, I won't even download your new record.

This type of bullshit being passed off as punk rock means once again it is time for the streets to reach up and wipe clean the state of music today.

It’s the return of the fucking dinosaurs. These arena rock, make-up wearing side shows are exactly why the MC5 and the Ramones and the Pistols and the Clash had to destroy rock in order to recreate it. Then, when the spandex and the hair spray and the fucking make-up again grew too fucking big for it’s own good, Jane’s Addiction and the Pixies and Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine had to rise up and wipe the table clean again.

Well we’re back there again and this time it’s a fucking trojan horse. This time the make-up wearing arena-rock sellout whores are wearing punk rock’s clothes, thinking we might notice. It's individuality packaged and sold as a fucking uniform.

but Something New is very, very close.

And I guarantee it’s not wearing fucking Nikes.

Come on! This is really disgusting and unacceptable!

I suppose next they'll be saying that its an old Muslim tradition too, right?

Then she, Ms E.D. Hill, ducks responsibility for her own words, blaming the whole thing on a "mischaracterization by the media".

And offers no real apology.
