It amazes me the number of plots there are out there that are based on tried and true themes. If you are looking for a new plot you really aren't going to find one. So, if that is the case, what's a girl to do? Or, in this case what is Tim Burton gonna do.

Take an old story and make it new, that's what. Alice in Wonderland is the new story in a long line that Tim Burton is working on to make new. It will be part CGI and falls in line with many other movies he has done.

Johnny Depp will play the Mad Hatter. Now how apropos is that? I can see him turning this character into who knows what if Tim will grant him liberties. In the past they have been known to take liberties with such creations as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, etc. I for one will be glad to see this old story creation twisted by Tim Burton.

First you have Pirates, in which he has the weird braids and he wears an amazing pirate hat. Then you have Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where he wears the big purple top hat. Even as a cartoon Johnny Depp has an insane batch of emo bangs that constantly poke out in the Corpse Bride. He's got the weird skunk hair in Sweeney Todd (and he was ya know the demon barber) and finally he's going to be the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's new Alice in Wonderland.

This Alice in Wonderland will be live action with an unknown actress named Mia Wasikowska playing Alice. There's some pictures here of Alice and she looks like she's on a boat; which I'm sure has fans freaking out since I've heard this part isn't in the book. I wouldn't be too worried if I was a fan of the book though, seeing as how Tim Burton is <del datetime="00">slightly insane</del> an amazing director and Johnny Depp always acts good in his films (yet more proof of their love for each other lol). I'm looking forward to it since it seems like it will be a lot more interesting than the cartoon version. I hope it's full of a good deal of insanity (let's just hope there's no more cross-dressing Johnny Depp) seeing as how you're adding up both Alice in Wonderland (greatest stoner dream of all time) and Tim Burton. Anyway it's due to release on March 5, 2010 in the US.

Been sick for a few weeks. Entire body feels like it's going to implode. Don't feel like writing, but I don't have anything better to do.

And it's times like this, when the whole world just seems like A Midnight Dreary, that HE comes out. You know, him. The version of me that knows that he has nothing left to live for....but he doesn't want to die. Not yet. And I don't know why. And the only thing that stops him from going Sweeney Todd on my entire family is me. I don't understand him. I don't even understand me anymore. Sometimes I wonder...if I just gave up, if I just let all of my emotions go, would I be him? Is that what I am inside, now? I used to believe I was a good person...no matter what happened, I always knew that I was doing what was right...ugh. Why can't things just go back to the way they were...?

I for one am a vorocious reader. Anything I can get my hands on will get read. The one thing that always gets me is the creative venture a screenwriter will take with a book.

Case in point>>Sweeney Todd. Now, I have read many the novel by Stephen King that has been turned to the big screen. I read the novel Anna and the King after I saw the movie and before I saw the play. Sweeney Todd boggles the mind.

It is written in an unusual style much that of a diary of the narrators perseptions of what he saw transpire that created the story. In the book the cast of characters for the movie are all there but none of the story unfolds as in the book. I kept looking for the same romantic plot and couldn't find it. The romantic plot of the book is totally different than that of the movie. I have not seen the play so cannot in all justice say whether it is in the same way.

Am I disappointed by the movie? No. Am I disenchanted by the book? No.

They are both in themselves quite good. I think that Johnny Depp did a splendid job of creating the character Sweeney Todd. The writer of the book did a bang up job of working the story. They were both entertaining and creatively done. I feel however that to fully understand the movie sometimes it helps if you know the writer's motivations. In this the creator of the the movie took such extreme liberties that one cannot suppose to understand.

When you read a story is it for entertainment or knowledge this begs to question? For me it can be either. In this case I wanted to know more on the subject of Sweeney Todd but am left a little clueless.

Read and read often I say. You never know where you will find an entertaining piece or more knowledge. My next project is to see if there is a book from which they took the movie Deja Vu with Denzel Washington. Really need to see if I can figure out the mystery. LOL

Until next time Happy Reading!

Instead of random babbaling this week I’m going to actually try put my schooling to use. I’m going to talk about Mise-en scene in film. First I’ll explain it as simply as possible, then I’ll try and go a little more in depth.

The term was originally used in the theatre, literally meaning “putting on stage” but that isn’t really important. Mise-en scene now basically means the visual style or mood in a film that is created intentionally by the Director and Production Designer. The Director and Production Designer have many tools they can use in order to create their desired Mise-en scene. They can use sets, props, lighting, actors, costumes, make-up, and even hair stylists for example. I find talking about Mise-en scene without visuals kind of redundant so check it out

The image above is from a short film called “Cat With Hands” which I highly reccomend to everyone. This short tries to portray a sense of fear to the audience, which I believe it does very well. How you might ask? Well lets take another look at the image.

This shot is very dark with a bluish hue which instantly gives off a sense of gloom and doom but that part is pretty obvious. Another aspect in this shot, one that I think is the main reason this scene is so affective, are the dark, ominous, looming trees in the back and foreground. Especially the tree to the right of the frame, with its finger like branches creeping up behind him...It really gives a feel that these two men are in the middle of nowhere, being trapped or attacked by these trees. Is the Director foreshadowing violence maybe?

Those trees didn’t just happen to be there when they started filming. The Director consciously chose to pick that spot, to put the camera in such a way that captures these elements.

P.S Check it out

Pretty fucked eh?

Now have a look at this image.

This image stands in stark contrast with the Cat With Hands. The scene has lots of bright, soft colors with some nice decorative plants placed around the frame and the two main characters standing smack in the middle, dominating the entire scene. Their bright blue and orange tuxedo’s creating a very humorous mood. The characters don't say something like "arn't these colorful tux's creating a humours feel to this place?" The director represents this silently using visuals.

Mise en scene can be broken into two different catagories: Classical and Expressionist. Classical doesn’t shove its mise en scene in your face. It is a lot more subtle and not as obvious. This style is very popular and a lot of directors use it. Most Hollywood films are classical.

Expressionist however does tend to shove it in your face. One movie that is a good example of expressionist mise en scene is Sweeney Todd by Tim Burton(which happens to be one of my favourite films)

Classical - Jaws

Expressionist - Sweeney Todd

You can see how classical looks a lot more believable wheras the expressionist look more contrived.

The topic of Mise-en scence starts geting a little more complex now that we have the basics covered. Filmmakers and critics constantly argue about the peramiters of the definiton of mise en scene. Some think it contains just the phyical objects whithin the scene. Using the image of Sweeney Todd for example, the creepy costumes, broken up attic set, lighting, pale make-up and messy hair are what make up the mise-en scene. But what if the camera slowly and dramaticly zooms in on his face? If the camera did a really fast zoom onto his face like a bad movie from the 70's or like a really cheesy toothpaste commercial or something, would the feeling of the scene change? Most deffinitly I think but that doesn't neccesarily mean it is part of the mise-en scene.

Camera movement in mise-en scene seems to be a debatal subject. It affects the mood of the scene but some people say that it calls attention to itself as way of seeing the scene instead of being part of the scene. I myself agree that it is seperate. Mis-en scene is what we see through the camera. Camera movement shows us the mise-en scene from different perspectives, which can change the mood, but its a manipulater, not an actual part. Thats how I see it anyway.

Well this blogs getting to be pretty long so I'm gunna end it there.

P.S.S Check this out...Gremlins have invaded Hollywood!

And in our wonderful dramaturge's final posting, Lauren guides us in an exploration of that odd combination (at least to our modern understanding), the barber-surgeon.

For centuries, surgery was a craft rather than a profession, and it was often practiced by barbers. In addition to grooming services, barber-surgeons regularly performed bloodletting, dental extractions, minor surgeries, and sometimes even amputations.

The association between barbers and surgeons goes back to the early Middle Ages when surgery and medicine were practices carried out by the clergy. This changed in 1215, when a papal decree ruled that priests could no longer participate in any shedding of blood. Barbers, accustomed to using a razor, were presumed to be skillful in carrying out any treatment that involved cutting the skin, and so the practice moved to them.

During the 14th and 15th centuries, the Black Plague wiped out a vast number of university-trained physicians, and barbers became increasingly relied upon. “Flying barbers” traveled from town to town, setting up tents to offer their services. In 1540, Henry VIII united the Company of the Barbers and the Fellowship of Surgeons with a royal decree and created the unified trade guild, the Company of Barber-Surgeons. Barbers and surgeons remained joined for over 200 years.

The practice of surgery was still in its primitive stage, but discoveries were often being made. Barbers and surgeons regularly performed anatomical dissections on corpses to further their knowledge and practice their craft. Though the guild ultimately divided, associating blood and dissection with the barber could have contributed to the lingering fear of barbers.

In many versions of the Sweeney Todd story, including Christopher Bond’s 1973 play, Sweeney Todd is explicitly identified as a barber-surgeon. In Bond’s version, when Sweeney returns to London, he stages a public competition against another tradesman to see which of them could perform not only the closest, quickest shave but also the most adept tooth-extraction.

In the second part of Lauren's dramaturge report, she explores the possibility that the Sweeney Todd story is based on an actual person. Enjoy!

Is it possible that such a folliclely-centered psychopath like Sweeney Todd really existed? Crime historian Peter Haining, who explored the available evidence for 25 years before writing 1993’s Sweeney Todd: The Real Story of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, believes so. He was convinced of Todd’s existence by reports he found in The Newgate Calendar, which according to Haining is, “a more factual, reliable document than the penny dreadfuls of the time. It is simply all too gruesome not to be true.”

According to Mr Haining’s account—which is still not widely accepted—the real Sweeney Todd was the monstrous product of his cruel upbringing, an opportunist thief who was savage even by the standards of his contemporaries, killing at least 160 victims in a 17-year homicidal career. The story begins with Todd’s birth in a Stepney slum on October 26, 1756. He endured a short, poverty-stricken childhood (during which his main fascination was with the instruments of torture at the Tower of London) before being orphaned aged 12. He survived by becoming apprentice to John Crook, a vicious cutler (specialist in razors). Two years later, he was jailed for petty theft and sentenced to five years in the notorious Newgate Prison. There he worked as “soap boy” for the prison barber. When he walked out of the prison in the autumn of 1775, he found work as a “flying barber” before settling in the infamous premises next to St Dunstan’s Church on Fleet Street, then a haven for thieves and drunkards. The shop’s front sign read “Easy shaving for a penny—as good as you will find any,” next to which were displayed jars of teeth he’d pulled and blood he’d let—some of the surgical duties of a barber of the time.

In Haining’s account, Todd’s first victim was a “young gentleman from the country” who had a conversation with the barber on the street corner. “The two men came to an argument and all of a sudden the barber took from his clothing a razor and slit the throat of the young man, thereafter disappearing into the alleys of Hen and Chicken Court.” Haining quotes the Daily Courant of April 14,1785 which reported the murder.

Soon after the legendary trick barber’s chair supposedly came into use. Customers who found themselves in a dark, empty shop and who were unwise enough to flaunt their wealth met a grisly end under the floorboards. Todd pulled a lever, which tipped the victim headfirst through a revolving trapdoor on the floor (there was an identical chair bolted to the other side which swung up). He could then descend the steps to cut the victim’s throat at his leisure.

Todd initially left the bodies in the underground passages below the church but, worrying about the rapidly growing pile, devised the plan of employing Margery (perhaps Sarah) Lovett’s piemaking skills. He dismembered the bodies and carried a box with the victim’s flesh, liver, heart and kidneys to Mrs Lovett’s bakery at nearby Bell Yard. The heads, bones, and other remains were piled in the Weston family vault beneath the church—discovered later by unfortunate detectives who had been tipped off by churchgoers upset by the stench of rotting flesh.

Gossip about disappearing sailors eventually led to the pair’s arrest. Lovett confessed everything before, apparently, committing suicide in prison—while Todd’s trial in 1801 is said to have generated feverish excitement. He stood accused of just one murder—still enough to hang him, if convicted—that of a seaman, Francis Thornhill, on his way to deliver a string of 16,000 pearls when he decided to stop for a shave. A pawnbroker’s clerk gave evidence that the pearls were later pawned by Todd and the prosecution described how his house “was found crammed with property and clothing sufficient for 160 people”—a statement that was said to cause a “thrill of horror” to run through the courtroom. The jury took 10 minutes to find him guilty and, at age 45, he was hanged on 25 January 1802 at Newgate Prison, in front of a crowd of one thousand.

Ernest's first actual piece of clothing is finished. No, the party hat and bow tie did not count as full pieces of clothing. They are now tucked away in Ernest's Snoopy box of doom. I mean clothing. Except that his tuxedo won't fit. Yes, I did say tuxedo. Ernest has his James Bond outfit finished, with the exception of buttons and that huge gun that Daniel Craig lugs around in the Quantum of Solace poster.

It looks shabby, I think. That's because I had to rip stuff off and reglue a lot. Gah. Spongebob was also in my head...oh yeah because my sister kept playing Spongebob clips on Neopets. Grrr. I can't believe people still like Neopets. And that they shamelessly promote other things on their site. As if it were a Neopets thing. And her Neopet is uglier than my Neopet. Yes, I have a Neopet, but it hasn't eaten since fourth grade.

It's fun to do fashion designs for Ernest, but I need more ideas. I've got a Prince Philip (Sleeping Beauty)costume for the photoshoot, Batman, which will end up being a weird stew of all the Batmans, I think, and a speedo. (I'm considering a star-spangled banner pattern. By the way, this cafeteria man on Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader didn't know the lyrics to the National Anthem. We should pie him. With Sweeney Todd's pies. Also, the winter solstice is on December 21st, the day Sweeney Todd came out. Which means this year, my turn to do the layout for the Youth Forum is also December 21st. And, the trailer for Public Enemies comes out on Christmas! What a delightful present. I feel like Little Bobby from my English essay. What a long parentheses thingy this has been! I was playing Six Degrees with everything in my life at the moment.) It's fun to draw Ernest designs because he's just a rectangle. Huzzah for simplicity. DING! A Borat style swimsuit? Gross...

Ugh! What smells like rat? Ewww sudden dead frozen rat smell infestation in my house.

The Rep has a new staff member--Artistic Associate Lauren Shouse, who is also serving as dramaturge for Sweeney Todd. She created a very interesting (and very extensive!) background packet for the cast, and I've asked her to choose some interesting highlights to share with you. It's a bit long, but I think you'll find it as fascinating as we did. We'll start with the Literary History of Sweeney Todd. Enjoy!

An unnamed murderous barber first appears in 1795 in an English magazine called The Leisure Hour. Thirty years later, a French version of the story, entitled “A Terrible Story of the Rue de la Harpe, Paris,” is published in London’s Tell-Tale Magazine. In this version, the barber murders a country gentleman and steals a string of pearls before delivering the corpse to his mistress, a chef renowned for her savory pâtés en croûte. The duo are discovered when the victim’s faithful dog leads the police to a cellar heaped with the skeletal remains of three hundred people.

In 1846, writer Thomas Prest relocates the story to Georgian London—setting the barber shop on Fleet Street and the pie shop in Bell Yard, Temple Bar—and centering the story on an invented romance between the dashing sailor, Mark Ingestre, and the virtuous Johanna Oakley. The first of eighteen serialized installments of The String of Pearls—A Romance, appears in November in Edward Lloyd’s weekly penny newspaper, The People’s Periodical and Family Library.

So successful is Prest’s “penny dreadful” with the working class readership that George Dibdin-Pitt dramatizes The String of Pearls the very next year, adding the subtitle “The Fiend of Fleet Street.” Advertised as “Founded on Fact,” the melodrama opens at the Brittania Theatre. Sweeney’s battle cry “I polish ’em off!” and his trick chair attached to a trap-door thrill audiences ravenous for gory entertainment.

Without copyright protection, dozens of adaptations quickly follow throughout the country and the British Empire. Some add music, some restore the heroic dog, but all emphasize the villainous barber. In 1862, Frederick Hazleton fashions a Sweeney Todd novel from his own three-act play. Hazleton has Johanna disguise herself as a boy in order to apprentice herself to Sweeney and search for her missing fiancé. In the decades to come, actors like George Yates play Sweeney thousands of times. The aptly-named Todd Slaughter’s performance is captured in George King’s 1936 film, The Demon Barber. There’s even a ballet version produced in 1959 by the Royal Ballet Company.

Then in 1973, playwright Christopher Bond—borrowing from sources as diverse as The Count of Monte Cristo, The Revenger’s Tragedy, The Spanish Tragedy, and Shakespeare—renovates the Todd legend by giving his barber a lost wife, a daughter…and a motivation to kill. Bond’s version, which opened at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, elevated the story of Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett from 19th-century melodrama and attracted the attention of Stephen Sondheim, who was working in London on the premiere of Gypsy. Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s Sweeney Todd, adapted from Bond’s play, opened on Broadway in 1979. A critical—if not financial—success in its initial outing, it entered the theatre (and opera) repertory with amazing alacrity.

The Walt Disney Company had a big presentation a couple of days ago where they announced a bunch of new movies, including three starring Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street). These are a new adaptation of The Lone Ranger written by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio (National Treasure: Book Of Secrets) where Depp will play Tonto and George Clooney (Burn After Reading) might play the titular character, a new part live-action/part CGI adaptation of Alice In Wonderland written by Linda Woolverton (Mulan) and directed by frequent collaborator Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd...) so yeah obviously, and as expected, a fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean film.

Source

It was also announced that Cars 2 would be released in 2011 instead of 2012 and that the story will have Mater joining Lightning McQueen on a world tour. Additionally several short films entitled Car-toons will be set between the two films and will air on the Disney Channel and perhaps before some theatrical films. Thus, the Disney/Pixar film originally planned for 2011, Newt, will instead be released in 2012.

I link? Giammai, segreto professionale. Ho visto qualche film. Gomorra, a Verona la mini cooper è la macchina delle fighette, a Napoli quella dei camorristi. Hancok, spettacolare la prima parte. Teeth-Denti, teen movie a sorpresa, ahia. Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton mai così dark e senza lieto fine. Mongol, visi bellissimi e fotografia mozzafiato.
Blog? Ma a che serve un blog? Vien proprio da chiederselo a questo punto.

We had a minor Ernest emergency. He got lost playing hide and seek/Zoboomafoo with himself. Then again, when is Ernest not an emergency. He wishes he could pee, but Grapes told him he can't because then he would soggify himself. Her words, not mine.

Who wishes they could pee? It's nothing but a nuisance to stop, go to the restroom, lift up a leg (or use the toilet, as I do) release pee, clean up (hopefully you do), and go back to whatever you were doing before. When I'm doing my job, do you think I have time to stop and pee while I'm kicking as-filing tax reports?

In the underwear modeling business, you have no time to pee either. Otherwise you might soil the underwear you're modeling and that's just sick. They might not photoshop it off and leak an unphotoshopped version out to the Internet. That would be..the end of your career. Life as you know it. Actually, every second is the end of life as you know it. Think about it, it makes sense. Anyways, back when I underwear modeled there was no photoshop. It was purely talent and skill to create a photo that didn't need to be...shopped.

Grapes is writing fanfiction now, after years of shunning all the bad ones on fanfiction.net. I read it, of course, to give her encouragement. In honesty however, my tastes range from Pride and Prejudice to Crime and Punishment. I like books with "and" in between two nouns. Sushmita is quite endearing however. She reminds me a little of Grapes's pal Sushi. i can't quite place it...maybe it's the love of aerobics. You'll have heard of her if you read Grapes's old blog. She's the one in the Arabian Nights story.

It seems Guantorga may be coming a bit earlier. What I said before about wanting her to come, I take back. I opened a box today and inside were all the things Guantorga uses when she comes over. The smell pretty much whammed me in the nose. I remembered how we all couldn't smell anything else for two weeks after she left. Poor Ernest, he's too young to suffer that yet.

Grapes is reading about King Arthur in English. Good stories. I like them, they remind one of what is chivalrous and right.

Yesterday Grapes went back two steps in her resistance. She watched that funny interview of Johnny Depp in Toronto with Maria Menounos. Boy that was one dorky interview. Johnny Depp is so dorky. I used to tell Grapes that and she would giggle and say "I know." Now she just says "Yeah." But Maria Menounos says "double duty" and Johnny Depp laughed about it. Everytime I watch it I think someone is calling me to action. But uh...that's besides the point. Then she watched the Sweeney Todd London press conference and laughed out loud. Actually out loud. That's amazing. Grapes never laughs out loud. When she's laughing hilariously with you on AIM, usually she's stonefaced. It's the funniest thing I've ever seen. She also watched the "ten decades" interview. Grapes loved it when coffee came out of Johnny Depp's nose. Ugh. Vulgar humor. Whatever, she's Grapes and I love her.

Well, goodnight. Tomorrow I think I'll be off to a resort. I'll (how do annoying reporters say this) "keep you in the know", "give you the inside scoop" - the inside scoop of what? Ice cream?

Kreepy Krumbs - Vol. I, Book Of Poems On Issuu

The Kreeps’ Kreepy Krumbs - Vol. I offers ten deliciously dark poems which include odes to classic horror films such as Academy® award Best Picture The Silence of the Lambs and Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd.

The Kreep is a forlorn Gothic poet that offers a variety of dark treats such as horror reviews in chilling verse. Produced by R. Productions in association with Hoffhines Productions, and published by Static Multimedia, The Kreep is offered in several social media formats such as a syndicated feature on 100% OF NOTHING, an art and culture Ezine linked to a free downloadable podcast on iTunes. Selected poems will also receive an audio/visual treatment and posted on YOUtube and Vampire Freaks while compilations can be found in book form on Issuu.

A new Kreepy poem is available every Wednesday on 100% of Nothing with a link to a free iTunes podcast. This week The Kreep’s poem is a tribute to one of the greatest serial killer films of all time The Silence of the Lambs, on DVD now.

Take a slice of Edward Gorey, a dash of Gothic angst with just a pinch of Doctor Seuss and you’ll understand THE KREEP’s sensibility.
