Week 19

Psalm 133 is a song of ascents - sharing the joy of harmonious relationships, brotherly love! In these 3 verses that completes this Psalm David shares the importance of living together in unity. The notes from The Life Application NIV Study Bible share: Unity is important because

it makes the church a positive example to the world and helps draw others to us;

it helps us cooperate as a body of believers as God meant us to, giving us a foretaste of heaven;

it renews and revitalizes ministry because there is less intentions to sap our energy.

Living in unity does not mean that we will agree on everything; there will be many opinions just as there are many notes in a musical chord. But we must agree on our purpose in life - to work together for God. Our outward expression of unity will reflect our inward unity of purpose. How have you shared being united with your brothers/sisters in Christ lately?

Hermon shared in v.3 is the tallest mountain in Palestine, located northeast of the Sea of Galilee. You can click on the picture to find out more information regarding this area!

"It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows His blessing, even life forevermore."

Psalm 133:3

Can you see this? The tallest mountain's dew (Mount Hermon) - mist - falling upon Mount Zion (Jerusalem)... The largeness of the blessing He gives us. Giving us such a blessing that our land will give enough food for three years! Forevermore - everlasting, forever! Can you picture it?

2 Samuel 5:11 - 6:23

And David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.

v.12

We learn here that David understood his greatness can only come from God, as he credits his success by giving God first place in his life. Do you seek greatness from God or from people? In the drive for success, remember to keep your ambition under God's control.

The notes share the "stronghold" mentioned in v.17 is the mountain stronghold in the Desert of Judah that David used when defending himself against Saul (see 23:14 and 1 Chronicles 12:8). Have you ever taken the time to really think about a stronghold? What is your stronghold? Consider, the next time needing a shield, safe place, etc - to have God be your stronghold. He's always there for us, waiting for us to turn each situation over to Him!

Additional notes from the Life Application NIV Study Bible share for 5:19-25 David fought his battles the way God instructed him. In each instance he

asked if he should fight or not,

followed instructions carefully, and

gave God the glory.

We can err in our "battles" by ignoring these steps and instead: (1) do what we want without considering God's will, (2) do things our way and ignore advice in the Bible or from other wise people, and (3) take the glory ourselvesor give it to someone else without acknowledging the help we received from God. All these responses are sinful.

1 Chronicles 13-16

I'm going to take this time to go back & journal
Chapters 10-12 here as I directed in the last journey post!

Here we learn it takes God's timing, not ours. David walks step by step with God - to be obedient to His wishes, teaching us great patience. This journey begins with Saul taking his own life which we first read of in 1 Samuel 31:4

You will see as we walk this journey through 1 Chronicles
that we've read this before in another book of the Bible!

Chapter 11 revisits briefly how David came to power - which we read in more detail in 2 Samuel 5:1-10.

And David became more and more powerful, because the LORD Almighty was with him.

1 Chronicles 11:9

The notes share: David's power increased as a direct result of his consistent trust in God. In contrast, Saul's power decreased because he wanted all the credit for himself and ignored God (1 Samuel 15:17-26). Those who are concerned about building a name for themselves risk losing the very recognition they crave. Like David, we should be concerned for righteousness, honesty, and excellence, and leave the results to God.

Verses 10-47 communicate David's Mighty Men to us! There are Three imparticular men that are constantly spoken of, whom are: Jashobeam (Jashob-Baal) (v.11), Eleazar (v.12), and I believe Shammah (2 Samuel 23:11) being described as the most elite group. In v. 15-19 David teaches us that great devotion should only be given to God - not a man. Others held in great honor mentioned are: Abishai (v.20) and Benaiah (v.22). Then The Thirty mighty men (which there are actually 37) are listed.

1 Chronicles 13shares the event of bringing the Ark back from Abinadab's house. Although unfortunately the Ark did not end where David wanted it; because Uzzah died for touching the Ark. Therefore David was afraid of God, and did not understand how he could bring the ark to the City of David - so it stayed with the family of Obed-Edom for three months. This event was also shared in 2 Samuel 6:1-11.

David commits a psalm of thanks to the Lord for Asaph and his associates in 1 Chronicles 16. The note shared: 16:7-36 Four elements of true thanksgiving are found in the song (psalm):

remembering what God has done,

telling others about it,

showing God's glory to others, and

offering gifts of self, time, and resources.

If you are truly thankful, your life will show it. 16:8ff Several parts of this psalm are parallel to songs in the book of Psalms: 16:8-22 with Psalm 105:1-15; 16:23-33 with Psalm 96; 16:34-36 with Psalm 106:1, 47, 48.

Psalm 1 The writer begins his psalm extolling the joys of obeying God and refusing to listen to those who discredit or ridicule him. Our friends and associates can have a profound influence on us, often in very subtle ways. If we insist on friendships with those who mock what God considers important, we might sin by becoming indifferent to God's will. This attitude is the same as mocking. Do your friends build up your faith, or do they tear it down? True friends should help you draw closer to God, not hinder, your relationship with Him.

There is one main point in Psalm 2 that I'd like to discuss: Kiss the Son
do you understand the meaning of this? It's interesting to me to find my notes share: To "kiss the son" means to surrender fully and submit to him. Christ in not only God's chosen King, he is also the rightful King of our hearts and lives. To be ready for Christ's return, we must submit to his leadership every day. So - what does it mean to you to submit? We need to take the time to give all, make Christ Lord over our lives, and share His glory with others every chance we get!

I'm digging deeper into finding what it truly means to live a blameless life as directed in Psalm 15 & 101. Share your insights with me... here - or when I post my findings (hopefully tomorrow for My Monday Walk!).

One last book I'd like to focus on: Psalm 96 closely resembles David's hymn of praise in 1 Chronicles 16:23-26.

~ How to praise God according to this Psalm:

sing

proclaim his salvation everyday

declare (share) his glory and marvelous deeds

fear Him, tremble before Him

Acknowledge His creation
the heavens
the earth
the animals & plants
us

ascribe

bring an offering (remember what was shared previously... an offering of yourself, time, earnings, etc.)

come to Him

worship

speak the truth, "The Lord Reigns"

Do you see the similarities? Look back at the notes shared above regarding 1 Chronicles 16!

I have so many more notes that I've written regarding my readings this past week... but I'd like to hear your thoughts. Share a comment here! Have a blessed week, HL

Isaiah 40: 31 (NIV) but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

I'm at the stage of my spiritual journey where I'm acutely aware of my sinful nature. In fact, throughout my, day it seems as if a huge mental fog light searches through the corners of my mind and immediately detects wrongdoing a few seconds before I commit the act, (I call it my Three-Second Delay Phenomenon.) Of course, some sinful things I do have a much longer “lead time” than just three seconds, like the time I called in work “sick” when I really wasn't. That day was highlighted on my wall calendar more than a week before my imaginary “illness”occurred.

But, it still boils down to the final three seconds before the act where my conscience tells me, “Don't do it, it's a lie.” In that eternity of three seconds I feel the internal battle; the part of me that knows if I just hope in the Lord, I will have the strength to resist the temptation to follow through. And, I'm noticing that I sometimes consciously and deliberately choose not to ask Jesus for help, Imagine! My internal conversation goes something like this:

“Don't do it, Jesus will give You the strength to resist.”

“Hmmm.”

“Just ask, Him to help you, RIGHT NOW.”

“I don't want to.”

“But...”

“Nope, I don't want to ask. I'm going to what I want, and that's that.”

James 4:7 (NIV) Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

I'm still refusing to submit... but, a thought just occurred to me, I can no longer claim that my wrong doings are done while I am unaware, or unmindful of what I am doing (the devil made me do it.) My vision is sharper and more in focus than ever, I am choosing to be disobedient. Thank you, Lord for this cursed awareness.

A listing in a free web directory increases the number of links to your site, and therefore improves your link popularity; an important factor in SEO.

Submitting to a directory also means a permanent text link to your website with specific anchor text, which, if you can define, can help your search engine visibility.

Search engines will find your website through these links so that your site is indexed more often.

Another SEO benefit of web directories is that they can be an ideal place to find potential link partners.

For example, the Yahoo! Web Directory has a detailed directory listing categories and sub-categories that allow you to quickly find websites that are related to your site/industry. (link)

In the marketplace, we all are part of at least one team, no matter how small or large that team may

In the marketplace, we all are part of at least one team, no matter how small or large that team may be, and some of us are part of several teams. It is difficult to participate on several teams that interact with one another, especially if they exist in the same organization, and have different agendas.

Which team are you true to? Which team do you owe your allegiance? Which team trusts you, invests in you, submits to you, and is loyal to you? Which team do you trust, invest in, submit to, and give your loyalty to? Which team deserves your allegiance? These are hard questions, but they are real-life questions that arise daily.

The Apostle Luke Wrote

"No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth." Luke 12:13

In this example, Luke is making a point about finances and the love of money, but the principle is the same for other areas of our personal, social, and professional lives.

I recently participated in a failed rollout of a new leadership philosophy that was intended to radically change an existing dysfunctional corporate culture mindset. In theory, the new leadership philosophy appeared to have merit, and was devised by a well known management consultant, and if I'm not mistaken, a Christian man as well.

The reasons why this new leadership philosophy failed are too numerous to mention, but the primary reason was “trust.” The owner and leader of leaders did not follow the precepts of the philosophy. As a result, much of the negative fallout predicted by the author in his "fable," actually came into true. The corporate culture transformation never happened because of the inability of the leader of leaders to trust, and conversely the leaders were unable to trust the leader, including me. And, in my estimate the latter condition was worse than prior condition.

After an indoctrination period of more than two years, the new leadership philosophy never made it outside the conference room doors and into the minds of masses; all 30 of them. One thing that the author stated in his book, struck me very hard and seemed to contradict everything about the entire strategy, and appeared to be the crux of this little company's dysfunctional corporate culture. I am paraphrasing at this time, since I’m unable to locate the exact quote from the book or study guide. A leader must be loyal to one team, regardless of the number of teams he or she is a member of. That one team is the leadership team. That is counterintuitive to me, especially if the leadership team is so dysfunctional, that it caused the leader of leaders to resort to such a drastic course of action. The author makes the assumption that all of the dysfunctions are identified, addressed, and overcome, however, in my experience in this particular situation, none of the three happened in their entirety.

The leader spent hours a week for well over two years trying to instill this philosophy in the leadership team, which as I have stated, failed miserably. It was doomed from the start. Instead of starting with the leaders, because the leader of leaders could not trust that the leaders would accept another new philosophy, so he compiled a pilot group of non-leaders. The pilot team, had no managers and a single supervisor, two staff members, and consisted of people he felt needed “fix’n,” or would be sympathetic to his cause.

Soon after beginning this pilot, approximately six employees were either terminated or quit, because of fear of termination. One of them was part of the pilot team. At the time this pilot started I was two months into my tenure with this company and where I supervised a small group within my department.

Twenty-twenty hindsight, I should have realized that when my manager wasn’t invited to join the pilot group, that a problem existed for him. However, in my defense the other three managers were not asked to join the pilot either. Within three months, two of the four existing managers were terminated, and one of which was my manager.

Again twenty-twenty hindsight, I should have never accepted the manager position when it was offered to me. After several weeks and much prayer, I accepted the position offered to me. One of my concerns at the time was if I did not accept position, the owner would have a cause to hire someone else to replace me, just like he had my predecessor(s). I am convinced that if I had not accepted the position, I would not have been at this company much longer. I believe I was hired, without my knowing, for the express purpose of replacing my manager.

Off the top of my head, I can list from memory more than 30 people, which happens to be the cumulative size of the company, who were either terminated or quite during my tenure at this company. There were a few that quit within a day and even before lunch. That is nearly an average of one employee a month leaving this company, but usually happened in spurts. If you read my prior blogs, then you can understand why I felt like the revolving door monitor.

If you are entertaining the use of this philosophy, please do so with this caution. Damage will ensue, and if you are not ready, willing, and capable of coagulating the flow of blood, then you are at risk of hemorrhaging to death. In my estimation, this philosophy is not for the weak-minded or weak at heart. I liken it to cancer surgery, where you have to stop the spread of cancer cells and unfortunately have to sacrifice some healthy cells to eradicate the cancerous cells. I think there is a much easier way to deal with culture change, but the change has to be uniform and consistent and begin at the top where corporate culture is instituted. The leader of an organization that is so dysfunctional that he finds himself instilling such a radical change needs to first ask himself the following question. “How did I allow my company to get to this cancerous state, without addressing the cancer when it was just a small blemish on the surface of the skin?”

Five Dysfunctions doesn’t sound like a lot, but they are just bullet points and there are many dysfunctions rolled into each of the five dysfunctions. Just like a minor searching for gold, if he only picks at the surface for obvious, he will only get the obvious. The same is with this philosophy, picking at the surface won’t make the radical change happen, and it will unearth additional dysfunctions.

Therefore, ask yourself the following question. “Only five dysfunctions?”

So I called together a large meeting to deal with them and said: "As far as possible, we have bought back our Jewish brothers who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your brothers, only for them to be sold back to us!" They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say.

I know…I know…submission is not a popular subject. It’s actually considered archai

I know...I know...submission is not a popular subject. It's actually considered archaic and completely frowned upon in this secular society. But what does God think about submission?

James 4:7 says, "Submit yourselves, then, to God." Submit...the Greek word hupotasso means to subordinate; to be under obedience; to put under; subdue unto; be made subject; submit self unto.

Placing yourself completely under the authority of another isn't a popular concept. We live in a world where we are gods unto ourselves. However, this is not God's design.

Submit yourself to God. Give all of you to God...the good and the bad. Allow Him to use your good qualities. Also, allow Him to work on your bad ones. There's such freedom in giving it all to God! It's like being a little kid again...trusting God to take care of your every need. There's peace in submission.

Also, submit yourself to God's Word...the Bible. ALWAYS obey God's Word...even when it's hard to do. God can't dessert you when you follow His ways. When we submit to God's Word, we submit to a higher, more perfect way...something we could never achieve on our own. Read Isaiah 55:6-13.

Submit your future to God. Submit each day to God's will...praying that He will have His way in you. Don't live your life for selfish desires or to please others. Seek God's plan and purpose. If you seek, you will find...that's in the Bible, too (Matthew 7:7).

Secularists will tell you that submission will weaken you...but God says it will make you stronger than you could ever become of your own--1 Peter 5:6 "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up."

The art of submission--no matter how unpopular, it's an art I choose to master!

I'm participating in a major Do It Yourself Video conference in early Feb (more info here: http://www.video24-7.org/.) The organizers want to make a quick and dirty film as an introduction to the conference, and so are asking for as many people as possible to submit video of themselves or others reading the following script. (Link and text below:)

I'm emailing you guys who have made Quick and Dirty movies or answered MFA weekly challenges to find out if any of you can/would film yourselves or someone else, either with a webcamera or a digital camera (you can record in quicktime with an Isight, for instance.)

The deadline is THIS Thursday, though, so it's seriously quick and dirty! I just thought one of you guys might want to come play. Creativity is welcome--you can read or perform or do anything else with the script.

If you want to, you can upload the footage to sendspace (sendspace.com) and send me a link and I'll send it on to DIY.

Cheers,

What is Do-It-Yourself Video?

DIY video surrounds us 24/7.

DIY video is a camera in your pocket.

DIY video doesn't ask permission.

DIY video corrects the identities of the powers that be.

DIY video builds friendships and communities.

DIY video makes culture by appropriating culture.

DIY video is youth voice.

DIY video empowers the margins to shout out to the world.

DIY video tells our stories about the media we love.

DIY video doesn't believe in gatekeepers.

DIY video is a desktop revolution for independent artists.

DIY video knocks down walls and builds bridges.

DIY video is the media we make on our own terms.
----

Machinima is short for "machine cinema." It uses video game graphics technology to make animation within a real time virtual 3D environment. Machinima takes many forms: makers can film what's happening in game worlds, choreograph scenes using game players and sets, or hack game engines to make new visual effects.

-----

Anime Music Videos, or AMVs for short, remix Japanese animation with different soundtracks, usually popular Western music. AMVs are about overseas fans telling their own story using the visual material of Japanese popular culture.

------

Vidding is grassroots filmmaking where found footage, usually television shows or movies, is edited to music. These "vids" or "songvids," comment on, critique, or otherwise interpret the originals.

------

Political Remix is a way for creators to change the meaning of mainstream videos to talk back to commercial media and power. Remixers repurpose messages and twist them back on themselves to challenge, transform or subvert the system that created them.
-------

Today's activist media borrows from previous generations of film and video activism, but has been revitalized by the new possibilities of digital cameras, editing and distribution systems. Media activists can now compete with corporate news sources in telling their side of the story about issues, events and movements.

-------

Videoblogging or "vlogging" can be defined as publishing video on a blog, though some videobloggers would more broadly describe it as simply personal, diy, online video. In 2004, videoblogging broke down the barriers to traditional video distribution inspiring the widespread virus that is online video.
