last weekend Mistress wanted to go pumpkin picking, so we climbed into my old car, and made a run not quite to farm country NJ, but out of the city and "to the country" to get a little taste of fall, a pumpkin and have some different time together.

this was the first time Mistress and i jumped into the car and headed off. normally its subways, city streets and rarely a cab. so this was a chance to also have a different kind of talk-car talk. its not pillo talk. its not restaurant conversation. its not scene chatter. its not subway murmurings. its car talk-closed in, and a chance to go where other conversations don't.

on saturday, Mistress posing the question if our relationship had gone vanilla--and if this was good for Her.   and i am guessing the intention was to get me thinking--and it did.

was Mistress right, was our relationship losing its zest. was it going in a different direction. so now we had time to talk. and the really good thing about my relationship with Mistress is that we can talk-to each other.

and vanilla is something we both dont want to happen--we like things the way they are, and will work to keep it alive and growing--and hopefully growing together.

among the things Mistress and i have been working on together is getting out more--into the scene, with scene people etc.  for Mistress, its kind of a return for Her. She is a former pro-Domme and is somewhat well connected.  She retired though and had been off circuit for awhile (certainly for the nearly a year we have been together).

i am a very private, quiet, reserved person by nature.  i am not one you will find out and about. hell, i get nominate for national awards at work and i refuse to go to the award ceremony-even when they tell me i have won.

but we have managed to get out some over the last few weeks. i've met some interesting folks along the way-some who are "iconic" figures in the nyc scene. some who want to be iconic, and some who are just kind of testing the waters.  nothing too unexpected there.

much of the chatter both on message boards and at these events is the perceived clamp down on D/s in NYC. i am not convinved there is a concerted effort by NYPD to take down houses of domination. i kind of think in most of these cases, police were responding to nuisance complaints by neighbors, and these places did themselves in-but that is a different blog.

what is interesting though--and i admit i don't know any of these people all that well--is the vitrolic nature of the posts. yeah, there is safety in hiding behind a type-writer. but get out, D/s is about experience in real time. have that experience--then spew your venom.

now to put in perspective for those who will read this at a later date-last night was also the vice-presidential debate. Without getting too far into it because of what i do for a living, i am directly tied to events surrounding each of the debates as well.  but i think i am good enough at what i do, and connected enough where i can spend quality time with my Mistress and still make sure i am on top of what is going on at the office.

to accomplish this-email on my RIM, text messages and a random old-school phone call (even to my mobile phone).  pretty vanilla stuff so far i know....

so as i am heading home (and missing the debate) i started to follow what was going on via twitter-first on my RIM then on my laptop (gotta love that sprint air card).

Kitten reads a lot of blogs from different people, both Dom’s and Masters subs and slaves and it is amazing the difference of opinion that they all share about the BDSM life, some hae very stark views which in kittens opinion borders on abuse and then there are the ones who are so laid back they are horizontal.

The one thing that most of them have in common though is respect, they all have an enormous amount of respect for the ones to whom they either accept submission from or who they give submission to, and that is one thing kitten admires, RESPECT.

Kitten hears a lot about how it is not a slaves right to ask for anything and she is supposed to be happy with what ever her Master decides she is worth, be it time spent with her or in what tasks He gives her and this kitten does agree with to a certain extent BUT kitten also thinks that even a slave deserves a certain amount of respect as if a Dom/Master does not respect His property then in effect that property is worthless.

Kitten can see sisters throwing their hands up in horror that kitten says this, but if nothing else kitten is honest, both with herself and with her Master and has spoken to Him on occasions about things that kitten thinks and needs, a happy slave means that a Dom/Master will be happy as well as she will go that extra step in serving Him. To not talk to those You own means they are left floundering in what You wish from them, to not use them sexually is one thing, to not use them for domestic chores is another but to not speak or interact with them at all is something that should not happen as this lowers the relationship to a mere friendship status. How many times have you seen your friends in the street that you haven’t spoken to for ages and can have a five minute chat with them and go on your way ,,, a few kitten should think,,,, well this is what will happen to a D/s or M/s relationship if there is no communication and no interaction.

Kitten just wishes those who pretend that life is all good and well while secretly being eaten away when interaction with others take place as they wish it was them would just be honest with themselves and those who own them, its not alright or they would not keep writing about it, talk to your Dom/Master, explain your feelings, kitten has yet to meet a Dom or Master who does not listen, might take a few times and might take a few periods of being accused of not really being submissive and wanting to Domme from the bottom but ultimately a Dom or Master will be able to answer a sub/slaves fears and so enable them to move forward in the relationship.

The thing kitten thinks that needs to be remembered is that everyone needs to be spoken to, take this from someone who was ignored for years, yes a Dom or Master decides the level of interaction and the way a sub or slave will serve Him to complete His life but a sub or slave should also know that she had the basic right to communication, without that there is no relationship.

For those that don't watch much foreign programs in foreign languages this won't affect you much, but it does affect the millions that do watch anime. (which if my thought is correct is actually bigger than Disney or Marvel or any of those other comic book companies)

Anime is if you look at wikipedia defined as animation (cartoons) that come from Asia, or more precisely Japan (although the general style used to draw the characters is videly used in Asia and is beginning to take foothold in western cartoons as well (Avatar: The Last Airbender being the best proof of that)
Anime is the most viewed cartoons in Japan (which is pretty natural) but is also gaining more and more recognition throughout the world with millions of fans worldwide at the present time.

Now having said that, its pretty clear that most Animes will be broadcasted in the original language unless some company decided to license it and translate it to their native language. If not that then usually subtitled at least to accomodate the audio.

Now for those who don't have the greatest access to Anime in their local area (yours truely being one of those individuals) then you do have a little problem. of course you can invest alot of money and have it shipped, but that means not only having to bother keeping track of new releases all the time, but also taking the fees and stuff for getting it mailed to you.

Personally i don't mind either of those if i love the anime show enough (So far i have found a few of them, although i have only invested in one series so far) And while i love having the DVD's of the show, i am somewhat disappointed in the quality of the work and that is also the reason i don't like the licensed work or the official work at many times.

The reason i like fansubs is simple. Its ordinary people like me and you who take the time to give the rest of the world a chance to see the true nature of a show and why they love it. The translations might not be 100% (without speaking the native and the translated language fluently its hard to tell really) but they are much closer to the real deal i assume seeing as they don't have the restrictions that all the official releases have. Taking one of my (and many others) favorite show Naruto as an example i can say that the main characters favorite technique (which is copying himself into many temporary clones) called Kage bunshin no jutsu originally has been named the doppleganger or something in the american official release. The real translation actually reads shadow clone technique (kage litteraly translates into shadow, just as bunshin becomes clone)

doppleganger just doesn't sound good and there are countless similar cases where the official translations butcher the language. Another thing is that those who like fansubs generally like to have bits and pieces like naming (technique name as in the above mentioned example) to be in the native language and rather have a short explanation of what it is or something in the beginning.

Now onto what i really want to talk about which as odd as it sounds right now comes down to filetypes. There are many filetypes that fansub groups use to release their versions of the anime translations into the world. The most used being AVI (which actually is many different codecs and stuff and can be rather confusing but just remember its always named AVI) and the newer combatant to the DVD subtitling standad called MKV which allows the file to have multiple audio and subtitle tracks which can be selected.
(AVI missing these functions of course if that wasn't clear in what i said) AVI is what is known as a hardcoded format (everything being in one file) while MKV is a softcoded format (being able to contain several files like a zip file) the size of the files generally doesn't vary that much

While the choice seems obvious given this information, the choice isn't that simple anyway. MKV being the superior filetype has flaws that you don't have to worry about in AVI and while these faults aren't in themselves critical they are annoying when present. The most noticeable one in my opinion is how when several characters may be speaking together and their "speechbubbles" overlap in the subtitles. Basically the text becomes unreadable and what is incomprehencible for most to begin with (as most of the world don't speak Japanese) becomes completely incomprihencible because you hear something beyond you to understand and you can't read what they are saying either.

A not so frequent problem is that the font (the type of text) used by MKV isn't the best looking one. AVI coders usually have a very readable font with thick outlines to separate it from the animation, but even with this the size doesn't get to big which is also an issue with MKV at times, a too big font. I have at times found the font to cover nearly half the screen (on a 19" LCD screen i might add) which is alot.

I am not saying MKV is lost, i am just saying as an open format i would have expected a better standard, a better quality and software more able to resolve these issues easier and with more ease to the user before it was put into action. Thats the whole idea behind opensource, to combat the costly developed versions of the same product on an equal level but at no cost to the users.
