i remember in college reading usenet laughing about people arguing about star wars vs star trek. and, of course, who would win between the enterprise and a star destroyer. a quick yahoo! search on "enterprise vs star destroyer" provides many results, but i was brought back to this discussion by a post in gizmodo. i have to admit, i spent about 15 minutes reading the comments about people arguing. while i do believe the enterprise would win, i particularly enjoyed this comment:

the fact that i read this and then spent time blogging about it really cements my nerdiness.

So, does that make me chaplain to the USS Enterprise?

30 Rock won for best comedy series.  During her acceptance speech, Tina Fey alludes to the fact that ratings for the show are so low that 30 Rock could be at risk.

Could this be due to the fact that it's audience is of a certain "Why the hell would we pay for television and watch all those commercials" when we can just:

a) download episodes from iTunes for $1.99 (is that actually what it costs?  That's expensive!) commercial free. Are they commercial free?

b) buy the DVD box-set from Wally Banger (that's my pet name for Wal-Mart, cute eh?) and watch commercial free, and all in one marathon sitting

c) Torrent... urrr... ahhh... Slsk it for free, commercial free!!!

Is generation Internet kid really responsible for destroying the ratings and profit margins of EMMY AWARD WORTHY TELEVISION!?  Alright I'm experiencing some internal conflict here, brb.

OK, so while I'm not at ease with the state of the world, I've decided that watching Mexican television instead of utilizing the full bliss of the Internet is ludicrous.

And I'm totally concerned that all you unappreciative Internet kids are completely and totally responsible for preventing the major television networks and film companies from purchasing my scripts!  They can't afford to buy my Grade A scripts because all of their money is going towards stopping downloaders, instead of going towards purchasing good scripts and hiring talented actors, writers, directors, cinematographers, etc.

You are all bastards.

PS: I got off on a tangent there and forgot about the Emmy Awards.  Jeremy Piven (Vince Chase's agent, Ari Gold) won something about acting for Entourage.  At first I thought Vinnie Chase may have won the worst actor award, but I was mistaken (and he's just so damn cute how could you hate on him.  He looks like my cousin Pedro from Mazatlan.)  Oh, and apparently William Shatner tore off Heidi Klum's dress... I'm going to be back with an update, and hopefully a video about this.  I don't know if Shatner won any awards, but as far as I see it, he should have won ALL THE EMMY AWARDS.

Speaking of Shatner, I just watched an episode of Star Trek The Animated Series, and boy oh boy I wish they had made 100 seasons of that gem.

They'll be so totally bangin' on me that all the boys will wanna bang this little chucha (vagina)!" And I'm all like "OMG like totally no way. Like WTF OMG BBQ my ass and tell me what kinda shoes she wears!"  And then I went home to look up who she actually was, cause they never really told me.  And then I was actually like WTF "I kissed a girl and I liked it, the taste of her cherry chap-stick, I kissed a girl just to try it, I hope my boyfriend don't mind it!"  And then I was like oh, WTF is wrong with my friends!?  But I figured I should humour them and do some "research" on pop-culture.  And now my gato (cat) is looking at me like "WTF is your problem?" And I'm shrugging my shoulders and trying to pretend like it just ain't no thing but my mind can't stop thinking about my wife sneaking around behind my back to lock lips with caliente chicas (hot girls).  OK now I'm listening to Justice Planisphere.

This is a treasure chest of goodies, almost none of which I have seen or used in years. For an initial idea of the kinds of amazing stuff I keep for no good reason, take a look at this:

That's right, 7 old cellphones. Only 4 of which I personally used. The others are some I took in from my family for some unknown reason. I guess maybe I wanted the others to have company. I think my rationalization for keeping some of these is that I wanted to first clear out all the personal information from them before I recycled them or threw them out. Well, I never got around to that, so here they remain. Out of nostalgia, I plugged several of these phones in to see if any nuggets of years past were still in their memories. Some of them don't even power up anymore. Some had some SMS messages from years ago on them. One had some grainy low-res photos on them.

Moving on, the next ancient treasure is my collection of dice:

Not only do we have your standard set of D&D type dice, but there are several marbles containing photos of the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I've never played an actual game of D&D, but for some reason when I was 11 or 12 I wrote my own D&D type role playing game called Space Mission. I'm sure that will show up in a later post (yes, I still have it.)

In this bin, there was also an old black leather wallet containing several bills:

Yes, that is a 1000 Yen note and seven 2-dollar bills. Note that I have never been to Japan. I think a relative may have brought one back for me, but I don't remember. One of the two dollar bills is kind of ratty and of the 1953 series. Five of them are series 1976, and one is a series 2003.

Now, for one of the more odd things I have in my possession:

Yes, that's right folks, a model of my own teeth. I believe my orthodontist gave these to me after I got my braces off, which was approximately 12 years ago.

As I'm sure is evident from the first photo, there is a lot of stuff to go, but that will have to be saved for later.

Codenamed HTC Dream is a full Touch screen device with a fullsize qwerty keyboard, according to FCC submitted paper, a little less taller than iPhone ( not a thinner as we;d hoped!)

Nevertheless, It remains to see what other Manufacturers are prepping for utilising this potential iPhone Killer app. Im more interested to see some smartphone mobile devices ( those without huge qwerty). It should be interesting to see how Android perphones on an average hardware device. With HTC already tried out a windows smartphone  clamshell - HTC Startrek, which seemed more like a test device.. we can safely assume that HTC will injure or atleast pinch the Nokia-Symbian Combination in the future.

USS Hera

The USS Hera was a Federation starship that was in service during the 24th century.

In 2370, it was under the command of Captain Silva La Forge, with a crew of over 300 that consisted mainly of Vulcans. During a routine courier run operating out of Deep Space 3, the Hera mysteriously disappeared.

A massive search mounted by the USS Excelsior and the USS Noble failed to discover any trace of the ship. The ship was believed lost and a memorial service was later held for the crew on Vulcan (TNG: "Interface")

The Hera used trionic initiators in the warp coils. (TNG: "Interface")

Background

The cause of the Hera's disappearance is never revealed on-screen; however, Chakotay speculated that Federation ships which vanish under similar mysterious circumstances may be victims of the effects of chaotic space. (VOY: "The Fight")

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, the Hera was a Nebula-class starship with the registry NCC-62006.

Like the Hera, the USS Intrepid and USS T'Kumbra also had predominantly Vulcan crews.

The USS Hera may have been named after the Greek goddess.

El resultado fue super GEEK, pero en realidad, más bien COOL, ya que fue nombrado el mejor tema de instalación de cine en “CEDIA 2007”.

Esto me hace pensar en un libro llamado "The Physics of STAR TREK", escrito por Lawrence M. Krauss y con prólogo de Stephen Hawking.

On my way home from work last night, I heard on the radio how the price of gas was about to skyrocket again so, I pulled into the first gas station I saw and said some words I rarely ever say anymore.

“Fill’er up.” I told the attendant.

Eighty-three dollars and several tears (and expletives) later, I was on my way.

As I drove off, I thought back to the early 1960’s when my Dad would pull into our friendly neighbourhood station and say, “Fill’er up, or five dollars, whichever comes first.”

For those of you who’ve never visited the sixties, back then, a gas station attendant, fearing an overflow, would be cautious when asked to put five dollars worth of gas into a tank.

True. Even though my father drove a total gas pig of a car, five dollars could easily buy a week’s worth of driving in the family boat. Of course, we never went anywhere, but that’s beside the point.

Anyway, as expected, the next morning the price of gas jumped 3 cents to 134.9 cents a litre - or approximately $5.65 per gallon. Remember that old cliché “Taken to the cleaners?” I think it needs to be rewritten to read, Taken to the gas pumps.

Now, if you expect your government to do anything about rising fuel costs, forget it. Sure, they’ll try to pacify us by promising to look into the matter. But the sad truth is, other than getting all the usual gas-bags and political blowhards together and forming a seriously gaseous committee to look in to the matter, our leaders have proven time and again to be woefully impotent when it comes to doing battle with the big oil corporations.

Many people believe the price of gas could be easily reduced if the government merely dropped a portion of the taxes. But, according to this one government spokesperson talking-head I heard on a radio interview last night, this is not the case. According to this guy, our government is doing everything possible to keep the price of fuel low because they truly feel for you and me, the gas buying public. But alas, he explained, decreasing taxes will not help lower the price.

“How do you figure that?” I yelled aloud at my radio.

NOTE: Before I go any further on how lowering gas taxes has no effect on the price, to fully understand the convoluted logic of the political mind, you must first bang your head repeatedly against a concrete wall. This will properly prepare your brain to absorb the information. Come back when you’re done. I’ll still be here.

Now, as I heard it explained on the radio, lowering taxes will have no effect on the price of gas; rather, it will only serve as a signal to oil producers to raise prices even further, because the public is already acclimatized to paying the higher price anyway. Sadly, according to the brightest minds in government, our politicians are powerless to do anything about the situation except, of course, rake-in millions more in tax dollars.

For a brief moment, I started to buy into this weird, crazy explanation, but then, the truth suddenly hit me like an unquenchable gas-guzzling Hummer. It was the only logical explanation left. Yup, our leaders in have been taken over by those evil, half man/half machine Borg aliens from Star Trek and we are all about to be assimilated one gas tank at a time.

Think about it. First they encourage us to support the economy by buying these large, expensive, gas-thirsty vehicles. Then, they slowly jack-up the price of gas until we are spending more on fuel than food. Finally, they’ve got us where they’ve always wanted us - by the pistons. And that’s when, like in Star Trek, they assimilate you. Resistance is futile. You are now Borg (and part of the gasoline addicted collective).

It’s amazing, but somehow “big oil” has managed to turn the entire car driving public into passive pushovers. We’ve become a bunch of spineless, whimpering, pusillanimous gasoline junkies who have forgotten about natural human locomotion.

C’mon people, think about it! There is only one way to do battle with the greedy gas titans and the battle cry is “WE WILL WALK - or at least ride our bikes!”

That’s right. For our collective health and wealth, we must start walking more and using our vehicles only when absolutely necessary.

Sure, we may be losing (getting our asses kicked) the battle now, but the war has just begun. If the world’s oil producers suddenly see hundreds of millions of people walking and riding their bikes to work, they’ll quake with fear and lower their gasoline prices immediately.

Trust me, I’ve watched a lot of Star Trek. I know how to handle the Borg. [End]

Lite bakfull, lite trött och lite småsugen på något gott. Kvällen ska toppas av en Startrek-frossa med kladdkaka, glass och skivad frukt. Filmfrossan börjar i kronologisk ordning med Startrek the motion picture, följt av Startrek 2 the wrath of Khan. Naturligtvis ska vi klämma in så många som vi orkar i kväll. Det finns totalt tio långfilmer så det räcker nog ett tag. I maj 2009 ska den nyaste komma, längtar enormt till premiären!

Under våren har vi haft Startrek DS9, Deep space 9, som nattsaga. Vi har nu sett den serien tre gånger totalt och nästa Startrek vi tar oss an är Startrek Enterprise. Det är lite lustigt att vara så fäst vid en tvserie så pass att vi ser något avsnitt nästan varje dag. Att lära sig dialoger utantill och efter en ny genom tittning se nya saker och finna tolkningar är riktigt roligt. Man kan se trender och rörelser i politiska frågor, livsstilsfrågor och etik från den riktiga världen. Som när Doktor Bashir avslöjades som genetiskt förbättrad som barn. Det problematiserades i serien samtidigt som kloning och genetisk forskning tog fart 1993. Serien fingrar på de världsliga frågorna men stryker ut och förenklar allt på ett banalt sätt. De vågar inte stöta sig med tittarna. Men jag sätter mig nu gärna framför TV för att njuta av lite underhållning.

Doohan's son wrote, "While there are many complicated reasons why this is a disappointment, mine is simple: I'd like to finish saying goodbye. Every launch attempt is like reliving his funeral. There’s a lot of pomp and ceremony, and a retelling of his deeds in life.
