Happy Friday! You guys didn't think that just because I'm on blogcation I would leave you without some stand-up to start your weekend off right, did you? BF is going on a hiking trip with his dad and brother next week (so jealous), and we all know what happened last time I was left alone, so I'll probably be blogging a lot. But until then, here's a little comedy to tide you over!

So, without further ado, the pill to make being at work on a Friday a little bit easier, Friday Stand-up:

First is comedian Andy Peters doing a bit about driving that made me laugh:

[dailymotion id=x5icxt]

Second is everyone's favorite, Maria Bamford:

A bunch of our friends will join us in Portland on Tuesday to see Eddie Izzard on his latest stand-up comedy tour. If you haven't heard of this amazing British, cross-dressing comedian, you haven't been reading my blog. He is the funniest comedian I have ever seen, and his bits are usually incredibly smart and often based on history. We saw him in Portland on his last tour, Sexie, in 2003. I laughed so hard that my face hurt the next day. He's that funny. And if you haven't seen his U.S. TV show, The Riches, on F/X, check that out, too.

In recognition of how cool Tuesday will be, here is one of my favorite Eddie Izzard bits. It's about religion:

Chris Rock: Never Scared is the hot comic's fourth HBO special and proves as disciplined and trenchant as his previous cable concerts. Announcing he's a recent father, Rock proclaims his biggest job is keeping his daughter "off the pole," i.e., steering her away from the life of a stripper. Warming to the theme, Rock asks why so many strippers earn money to pay for expensive tuitions yet he's never received "a smart lap dance." Things turn topical as Rock argues that his government won't solve the murders of rappers. ("More people saw Tupac get shot than watched the last episode of Seinfeld.") After taking broadsides at Michael Jackson ("Ed Bradley tried his best to make Michael look like a mammal!") and David Blaine ("Are we so desperate we fall for a trickless magician?"), Rock builds to a near-lecture (funny, though) on why white America won't let people of color acquire real wealth.

Hey, its Friday! Congratulations on making it through another week! You know, I'm not usually the gushy, show your emotions-y type. But. I wanted to tell you guys that I love you, I really really do. Cause sometimes I post things and I think "WP, that post is immature, and kinda stupid, your readers are going to defect." And then...instead of leaving me, you all join in! So I thought, what better reward for my group of dirty-minded, childish, fun-as-hell readers than some dirty-minded, childish, fun-as-hell stand-up comedy?

So here it is, guaranteed to make you shoot soda out your nose, Friday Stand-up:

First up is the always irreverent Andi Smith talking about boob jobs:

Hi everyone
With the media centre closing early on Saturday and me needing to drive back early Sunda

Hi everyone

With the media centre closing early on Saturday and me needing to drive back early Sunday, I didn't get the chance to put up the last three reviews.

Now that the Fest is over, it doesn't seem worth running reviews of the three individually, so here's a quick run down of what happened.

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra's Gala Concert on Saturday afternoon was the most fun I've ever had at an orchestral concert.

Rather than just sticking to classical music, conductor Richard Cock included everything from Olympic themes to James Bond music, Phil Collins, blues standards, jazz and English folk tunes.

The aspect which made it so much fun was the audience participation. In Coates's By a Sleepy Lagoon, he conducted the audience, asking them to make "shooshing" noises to sound like the water breaking on the beach and even had one guy do seagull effects - which proved quite amusing.

But the best was to come in the finale - Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.

The concert had been promoted as having a real cannon for the overture, but this proved logistically impossible.

So the audience was provided with paper bags, which we had to blow up and then bang at the point when conducted to do so.

It worked amazingly well, with only one or two people getting their timing wrong, and the sound of hundreds of people banging paper bags sounded amazingly like a cannon going off.

Then, much as a couple of years ago at an outdoor concert when he got the ECPO audience to do the Macarena, Cock had the Guy Butler Theatre audience up and doing a variation of the YMCA, changed to the NAFG to stand for National Arts Festival Grahamstown - written, he tells us, by "The Village Green People".

The concert ran much longer than I expected and I had less than five minutes to get to the basement of the monument (luckily I was already in the building) for the student theatre production Tech-no/Logic.

Presented by the UCT drama department, it was one of the funniest shows I saw the entire Fest.

For the most part it was stand-up comedy and skits by the show's co-writer Anne Hirsch, who mused on the infiltration of technology and the mass media into our lives.

Everything from cellphones to CCTV, Facebook, MySpace and Nintendo Wii provided the basis for jokes, while a large portion of the show focused on television, particularly reality shows.

The production featured three large screens and in between Hirsch's performances, pre-recorded segments featuring the rest of the cast were shown.

These ranged from rap music videos to reality show parodies - including one called "You've been Terrified".

I laughed from start to finish. A great show and Hirsch is definitely someone to watch for the future.

I ended off the Fest at the Scout Hall, watching Live and Kicking's final night - the Comedy Awards.

Stuart Taylor proved why he was awarded the best overall comedian award with a brilliant and original set, which included very funny insights into his marriage and birth of his child. (I saw he was blue and wondered if my wife had been having an affair with a Smurf!)

Rob van Vuuren won the "hot hatchling" award for best stand-up debut by a comedian more used to working within a scripted show, and his set also proved extremely funny.

The three shows were a great way to end a brilliant Festival, which had numerous sold-out performances and great quality throughout the Main and Fringe.

I woke up this morning and couldn't find my socks, so I called information. She said they were behind the couch.
In my house there's this light switch that doesn't do anything. Every so often I would flick it on and off just to check. Yesterday, I got a call from a woman in Germany. She said, "Cut it out."
I xeroxed a mirror.
I went to the museum where they had all the heads and arms from the statues that are in all the other museums.
When I was crossing the border into Canada, they asked if I had any firearms with me. I said, "What do you need?"
When I turned two I was really anxious, because I'd doubled my age in a year. I thought, if this keeps up, by the time I'm six I'll be ninety.
Sponges grow in the ocean. That just kills me. I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be if that didn't happen.
When I was a little kid we had a sand box. It was a quicksand box. I was an only child....eventually.
I went to a restaurant that serves "breakfast at any time". So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.

It's okay if you haven't heard of the show, I mean there must be nothing wrong with you, but it should definately alarm you. So, Family Guy is form the brainchild of the super funny and very young Seth MacFarlane, (born in 1973 and Family Guy started airing on 1999 = 26 years old, but his television career started before even that), and is about a very normal and typical family of the western world. I mean, this series has captured the everyday trials and tribulations of the western family and deals with difficult issues like farting and stem cell research, and shoe fetishists, and other brilliant stuff. I think that Herbert the old gay ephebophile must be the most outrageous character ever created on TV. I maybe wrong but the truth is that he makes me laugh every time I see him, and his limp old dog. It's very difficult to decide upon your favorite character on Family Guy, the show is that good, there is Stewie, Brian, Mayor Adam West, Tom Tucker the news anchor, Tricia Takanawa, the asian reporter... John is a regular writer & correspondent on the Emmy award winning Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He is my favorite Daily Show "Correspondent", it's not just his accent, and is one of the most intelligent satirists (Caution: endagered species) out there! He was also the writer and star of Radio 4's 'The Department' alongside Chris Addison and Andy Zaltzman. It centered around a three man 'think tank' who each week solved one of the world's major problems and it was hilarious. She is so bold that she actually stood up and in the 2007 MTV movie awards, in a dumbstruck audience, said "In a couple of days, Paris Hilton is going to jail... As a matter of fact, I heard that to make her feel more comfortable in prison, the guards are going to paint the bars to look like penises. I think it is wrong, too. I just worry she is going to break her teeth on those things." ... and Paris Hilton was in the audience! You've got to admire such a comedic mind... She has been compared to the Great Lenny Bruce. "The Sarah Silverman Program" is so funny and so politically incorrect that is MUST SEE...

The most imprtant thing being that he is a genius and a true pioneer of comedy. There are the comedies before "The Larry Sanders Show" and the comedies after "The Larry Sanders Show". His top-rated, award-winning show about the trials, tribulations, and double- dealing that goes on behind the scenes of a latenight talk show, a parody of the talk shows, broke every rule in the book. It had no laughter track. It didn't need to. The storylines and the comedy was so compelling that it needed no "This is where you laugh" signal. It is the first "uncomfortable" comedy, dealing with embarassing and difficult situations, long pauses, and more realism than you can take. It also featured real-life celebrity guests as they appeared on the talk show, but also as they appeared behind the scenes. This gave the celebrity guests the opportunity to play a different version of themselves, especially play with their persona. Garry Shandling paved the way for Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office (UK and US), and Extras, that is to say the cool comedies. So now you know a little about Garry Shandling...

He is one of the greatest comedians ever, a mime of the stature of Chaplin and Laurel, a great actor, and most important of all one the greatest filmmakers of all time. His impact on the art of filmmaking is enormous. Yes, he also directed most of his films and supervised almost all of them. Maybe that annoyed many people in Hollywood, I don't know. What I know is that he is trully a genius, he made his films way ahead of his time, so much so, that we have yet to recognize him as the great artist he was. In France, Jerry Lewis is called "Le Roi de Crazy" while in America, he is still an embarrassing and unexplained paradox, and often ridiculed. Some say it is because of his complex personality and public persona. Maybe he was too frank and honest. But whatever you think of him as a person shouldn't get in the way of judging him as an artist. It's like saying I don't think Woody Allen is a great filmmaker because I do not agree with his personal life choices. But there are many examples of such misjudgments in history. But if you think of him as retro, or too early a comedian to still make you laugh, or you have a ceratin image in your mind when you hear the name Jerry Lewis, check out his best films in the list below and get ready for something magic and personal...

Jim Carrey began as a stand up comedian, then continued to share his talent with us in the Wayans Bros 90s sketch show "In Living Color". After the 1994 film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective he really took off as a film superstar and the rest is history. Not that I do'n think that Jim Carrey is a great dramatic actor, I miss the Jim Carrey performing in crazy sketch shows and delivering brilliant comedic monologues...
