In a world where video providers seem to be adding increasingly disruptive digital rights management into their video streams, you can always count on video game accessories to provide a hole for unprotected video to break through. First it was the Xbox 360's HD-DVD drive, whose component output allowed for DRM-free copying of the now-defunct high-def discs. Now it's Sony's European PlayTV digital video recorder add-on for the PS3, which CVG reports can "export [recorded] videos to your PS3's XMB menu as MPEG-4 video" for free use on other devices. At a time when everyone from Tivo to Microsoft seems to slap some sort of protection on digital video recordings, it's frankly a little baffling that Sony (itself a major video producer) would leave this hole in its digital recorder. Not that we're complaining, we're just waiting with trepidation for the other shoe to drop.

Though Master Chief is little more than an adorable baby during the events of Halo Wars, it should come as no surprise that his Spartan brethren are a pretty big factor on the battlefield. Ensemble recently went into detail about the role of the Spartan in a fight on their official site. The secret to nailing the right feel for the Spartan according to Ensemble? Not nerfing them. Spartans aren't just dudes in good armor: They're one-man tipping points, able to grab an enemy vehicle and turn the tide. Sounds good to us; now, if there were only some way to get some more Spartans on the box.

Having already come to an arrangement with Japanese star developers Goichi "Suda 51" Suda and Shinji Mikami to publish a mysterious horror franchise, who could blame EA for showing interest in other Eastern talent? Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, David DeMartini, who oversees the EA Partners program and a board swathed in secret plans, candidly admits, "EA looks at the top 20 developers in the world and we try to sign anything those guys are working on." DeMartini explains that deals such as the Suda/Mikami one represent "something that is very unique and very special," despite being, like many of our relationships, "slightly uncomfortable for both parties." We're dying to see the results of EA's collaboration and share DeMartini's unshaken hope that it "will serve as a springboard to a successful formula that we can apply to some of the other great Japanese designers." You know, like Gackt.

As part of its recent quarterly earnings announcement, Take-Two announced that Grand Theft Auto IV has sold ten million copies through Aug. 16. These sales helped lead the company to a staggering $433.8 million in revenue in the third quarter, over twice as much as the same quarter last fiscal year. For comparison, the PS2 version of GTA: San Andreas sold 12 million copies worldwide. During a conference call, the company said it would continue to promote GTA IV through the holiday season, and that it expected lifetime sales for the game to "track well ahead of any previous GTA title."

Last Tuesday, I ran into a friend and frequent reader of this blog at Bikram Yoga Davenport (love it!) and she asked what was going on that night. "A Tuesday night? I don't know, I'm at yoga!"

Aside from Bikram Yoga classes and the Nike Human Race training run at Guero's (can't wait to check that out!), I don't really know a lot of cool stuff that's going on specific to a Tuesday. $1 Tecates at Lavaca Street Bar. Live music and $2 beers at the Irie Bean.

BUT I can tell you that tomorrow, Wednesday, night is just teeming with events and happy hours! Check out:

The Summer Beauty Party at Westlake's Sanctuary features cocktails, cupcakes, and lipgloss. Check out new store Sanctuary's offerings, new cupcake place Polkadots Cupcake Factory's sweet treats, and try on Rae Costmetic's Texas-proof lip stuff. New, new, new! 6-9pm.

Tribeza magazine Happy Hour at Belvederes, which is a downtown gentlemen's salon and spa. Don't know how successful those are (El Rey is another downtown men's spa), but it's an interesting venue for a happy hour. Free food and drinks plus a DJ should help mak the party happenin'. Don't worry, there's free valet. 5:30-7:30pm.

An after-hours shopping party at Spartan and Bows + Arrows in Bridges on the Park features 15% off everything in both stores, including stuff that's already on late-summer sale, and drinks and music by someone called Daetron Vargas. I've never been able to figure out where in the heck to park to go to either of those stores, so I've never been, but if you brave that situation, I think you'll be rewarded. 7-10pm.

Halo: The Fall of Reach

After having reviewed Halo 3, I have decided to review one of the books about Halo. This book is Halo: The Fall of Reach. The Fall of Reach takes place before the first Halo game, going all the way back to when the Master Chief was a child, all the way up into the very moment Halo 1 starts. It is a great, well-written book, with in-depth fighting sequences, a well-thought-out plot, and strong characters make this New York Times Bestseller one of my favorite books. The book starts out as then-Lieutenant Keyes and the SPARTAN program's head, Dr. Halsey, embark to collect "subjects" for the new SPARTAN-II program. One of the first children/subjects they look at is Subject 117, later to be known as the Master Chief. They decide he has what it takes to be in the program, and a good amount of luck. The book then takes you through how he was put into the UNSC ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence) Section of the Navy. They are trained by being put through many physical and mental challenges. As they grow older, they become more skilled and deadly than ONI imagined. They are then put through multiple surgeries that further their already-formidable skills. After that, the book shows us the first missions of the SPARTANS, as well as the introduction of the Covenant. The SPARTANS then go through many years of fighting, and earning almost every medal the UNSC has. The war takes a turn when the Covenant invade Sigma Octanus IV, an insignificant part of the UNSC. The now-Commander Keyes gives the initially gives the Covenant a beating, but they return in force to face the massed UNSC forces. It is learned later that the true purpose of the battle was to receive coordinates to a "Forerunner Artifact" and escape. The story returns to where the SPARTANS grew up, the planet Reach. Reach is a major shipyard and Office Corps site, and the UNSC cannot function without it. Once there, the battle-hardened Master Chief is given a new armor, the Mjolnir Mark V armor. It is a huge upgrade over the old armor, because it has shields and can hold a UNSC AI. After testing the suit, the remaining SPARTANS are told about their new mission to capture a Covenant ship, locate the Covenant home world, and bring one of their leaders back to Reach. The mission is ready to start when the Covenant suddenly invade Reach. Hundreds of ships pour into the Epsilon Eridanus system where they are met by the UNSC defenses. Captain Keyes, the CO of the mission, scraps the main mission and turns back to help the human fleet. Master Chief sends down most of the SPARTANS planetside to protect the planet, while going on a space op to help some unsecured nav information be destroyed so the Covenant don't find Earth. The space op succeeds, but only Master Chief makes it back to the ship before it jumps into slipspace to escape. All the SPARTANS on the ground are left behind. Which is where The Fall of Reach ends, and Halo begins. Even though this article may look long, it does not do the book justice. Check out the book and see the full story!

10.) I went to Michigan State University.

And I am PROUD to be a Spartan! Growing up in Michigan, I was vaguely aware of the rivalry between University of Michigan (UofM) and Michigan State University (MSU). I really didn't pick sides on the matter until I was a student at MSU.

The deciding factors for me were the amount of "green" space and the specialty programs. I graduated from what was Lyman Briggs School in the College of Natural Science. LBS is now LBC - it's been reinstated to college status in the last year. What LBS meant to me was a uniquely challenging curriculum that integrated the sciences with art/philosophy/politics/pop culture. You didn't just learn about science, you also learned how it interracted with society as a whole.

LBS was also a residential college - which meant that I got to live in a huge dorm that largely consisted of other science-minded kids like me. This was great because it gave me the freedom to fully be my "nerdy, tree-hugging, lab geek" self while I lived there. It was also a safe place to do class/dinner/game-room time in my own little corner of a huge campus. It really was the best of both worlds: Small college with lots of personal attention in the midst of a Large, Big Ten University.

As for the green space: My dorm window overlooked a large woodland, and there are lots of parks and natural woods distributed throughout campus. I still love to walk in the Rose Garden, or the 4-H Children's Garden - or Beale natural area.

MSU was a place where I could breathe.

I definitely made the right choice for me, and I haven't once looked back with regret. I made great friends, had lots of good & bad life experiences, learned to live on my own, grew up a WHOLE lot, and enjoyed some awesome Big Ten sports along the way.

Gunship Lite

We talked about the evolution of the gunship earlier. Now comes news of the next step in the evolutionary chain.

The AC-130U is pretty much what the Air Force wants in a gunship. The only drawback really, is the cost. They run about $190 million each. That means the Air Force cannot buy a whole lot of them. The folks at Special Operations Command (SOCOM) see a need for more gunships, but admit that they don't always need the whole AC-130 package. The proposed compromise is to convert a smaller transport into a less capable, but less costly gunship. The idea is to use the "new" C-27J as the base of this gunship.

I put the "new" in quotations because it is a new airplane... sorta. The C-27J Spartan is based on the Italian G.222 transport from the 1960s. But much like the C-130 was "rebooted" as the C-130J with new engines and avionics, the Spartan has been updated to the point where it is pretty much a new type. New engines, propellers and avionics make the Spartan far more capable than previous versions.

The US never operated the G.222, but recently has been searching for a robust small transport to move priority cargo and personnel. The C-27J fits the bill. It can get into and out of very small airstrips while still carrying a useful load. It can't carry nearly as much as a C-130, but it costs much less and will be cheaper to operate. It won't replace the Herk, but will fill a niche role in support of outposts and some special operation forces. In fact, both the Army and the Air Force will purchase and operate Spartans. While the Gunship Lite idea is just getting started, the Spartan has been on the market for a while now, and is enjoying considerable sales success with our allies.

Correction: The Air Force bought 10 G.222s and renamed them C-27A, using them to support operations in Panama and South/Central America.

Top 10 Historically Inaccurate Movies

10,000 B.C.
Director Roland Emmerich is usually a stickler for realism (see: sending a computer virus via Macintosh to aliens in Independence Day). So we hate to inform him that woolly mammoths were not, in fact, used to build pyramids. Heck, woolly mammoths weren't even found in the desert. They wouldn't need to be woolly if that were the case. And there weren't any pyramids in Egypt until 2,500 B.C or so.

Gladiator
Emperor Commodus was not the sniveling sister-obsessed creep portrayed in the movie. A violent alcoholic, sure, but not so whiny. He ruled ably for over a decade rather than ineptly for a couple months. He also didn't kill his father, Marcus Aurelius, who actually died of chickenpox. And instead of being killed in the gladiatorial arena, he was murdered in his bathtub.

300
Though this paean to ancient moral codes and modern physical training is based on the real Battle of Thermopylae, the film takes many stylistic liberties. The most obvious one being Persian king Xerxes was not an 8-foot-tall Cirque du Soleil reject. The Spartan council was made up of men over the age of 60, with no one as young as Theron (played by 37-year-old Dominic West). And the warriors of Sparta went into battle wearing bronze armor, not just leather Speedos.

The Last Samurai
The Japanese in the late 19th century did hire foreign advisers to modernize their army, but they were mostly French, not American. Ken Watanabe's character was based on the real Saigo Takamori who committed ritual suicide, or "seppuku," in defeat rather than in a volley of Gatling gun fire. Also, it's doubtful that a 40-something alcoholic Civil War vet, even one with great hair, would master the chopsticks much less the samurai sword.

Apocalypto
This one movie has given entire Anthropology departments migraines. Sure the Maya did have the odd human sacrifice but not to Kulkulkan, the Sun God, and only high-ranking captives taken in battle were killed. The conquistadors arriving at the end of the film made for unlikely saviors: an estimated 90% of indigenous American population was killed by smallpox from their infected livestock.

Memoirs of a Geisha
The geisha coming-of-age, called "mizuage," was really more of a makeover, where she changed her hairstyle and clothes. It didn't involve her getting... intimate with a client. In the climactic scene where Sayuri wows Gion patrons with her dancing prowess, her routine - which involves some platform shoes, fake snow, and a strobe light - seems more like a Studio 54 drag show than anything in pre-war Kyoto.

Braveheart
Let's forget the fact that kilts weren't worn in Scotland until about 300 years after William Wallace's day and just do some simple math. According to the movie, Wallace's blue-eyed charm at the Battle of Falkirk was so overpowering, he seduced King Edward II's wife, Isabella of France, and the result of their affair was Edward III. But according to the history books, Isabella was three years old at the time of Falkirk, and Edward III was born seven years after Wallace died.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age
In 1585, when the movie takes place, Queen Elizabeth was 52 years old - Cate Blanchett was 36 when she shot the film - and was not being courted by suitors like Ivan the Terrible (who was dead by then). And though the movie has her rallying the troops at Tilbury astride a white steed in full armor with a sword, in fact she rode side saddle, carrying a baton. She was more of a regal majorette than Joan of Arc.

The Patriot
Revolutionary War figure Francis "The Swamp Fox" Marion was the basis for Mel Gibson's character, but he wasn't the forward-thinking family man they show in the flick. He was a slave owner who didn't get married (to his cousin) until after the war was over. Historians also say that he actively persecuted and murdered native Cherokees. Plus, the thrilling Battle of Guilford Court House where he vanquishes his British nemesis? In reality, the Americans lost that one.

2001: A Space Odyssey
According to this film, in year 2001 we would have had manned voyages to Jupiter, a battle of wits with a sentient computer, and a quantum leap in human evolution. Instead we got the Mir Space Station falling from the sky, Windows XP, and Freddy Got Fingered. Apparently the lesson here is that sometimes it's better when the movies get the facts all wrong.

Did "300" kick ass, or what? It was one of those movies that you go out and buy before you have seen it, just because the trailers where so good. There was a lot of good lines in the movie, but I think that "This is Sparta!" has to be the favorite. So, this T-shirt design is a small tribute to a great movie.
