The weekend of July 26 and 27 is the much anticipated volunteer extravaganza and you should be there! Yes, there will be some manual labor, but it's the kind of labor that is reserved for volunteers - plenty of breaks and camaraderie, interlaced with food and drink, followed by some outstanding fishing.

Work begins at 9a both days. Lunches, snacks and drinks will be provided. Port-o-let on site. We'll provide the tools. You should bring work gloves, hat, long sleeve shirt, sunscreen and your fishing gear. If you would like to volunteer for both days, you might want to stay in one of the local hotels below:

In der Kategorie "Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour)" hat "The Simpsons" mal wieder eine Nominierung abgestaubt. South Park ging leer aus. Dafür hat South Park für die Episode Imaginationland in der Kategorie "Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming One Hour Or More)" eine Nominierung erhalten und hat auch gute Chance dort zu gewinnen.

HBOs Miniserie John Adams erhält gleich 23 Chancen auf einen Emmy. Darunter auch in den Kategorien "Outstanding Miniseries" und "Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special".

Heroes hingegen muss mit nur drei Nominierungen leben. Und die sind auch nur in Nebenkategorien wie "Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series".

Dexter hingegen erhielt imemrhin fünf Nominierungen und hätte es nach der sehr guten zweiten Staffel verdient mindestens einen Emmy mit nach Hause zu nehmen. Allerdings wird das schwer werden, denn selbstverständlich tritt Dexter in den verschiedenen Kategorien gegen andere gute Shows wie z.B. Breaking Bad, In Treatment, House, Mad Men und sogar Lost an. Ein Sieg für Michael C. Hall in der Kategorie "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series" wird langsam mal Zeit.

ABCs Lost schafft es 2008 auf acht Nominierungen, darunter auch endlich wieder "Outstanding Drama Series". Zudem erhielt die Episode The Constant eine Nominierung ("Outstanding Cinematography for a One Hour Series"). Auch Michael Emerson (Benjamin "Ben" Linus) hat gute Chancen zu gewinnen ("Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series").

Vier Nominierungen gehen an AMCs Breaking Bad. Die neue Serie erhält u.a. eine Nominierung für den besten Hauptdarsteller ("Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series"). Eine zweite Staffel ist zum Glück schon in Arbeit.

Mad Men, eine weitere AMC-Serie, erhielt ganze 16 Nominierungen. Sie gilt auf jeden Fall als einer der heißesten Favoriten dieses Jahres.

Immerhin 12 Nominierungen erhielt Pushing Daisies, was aber zum größten Teil darauf zurüczuführen ist, dass die Serie dem Comedy- und nicht dem Drama-Genre zugeordnet wurde.

Nur zwei Nominierungen erhielt hingegen, etwas enttäuschend, Californication.

In Treatment liegt da mit fünf Nominierungen im gesunden Mittelfeld. Ein Emmy Award ist auf jeden Fall mehr als verdient für die HBO-Serie.

Weitere fünf Nominierungen gehen an die Serie Entourage, die schon 2007 zwei Emmys gewann.

FOXs House bekommt dieses jedeglich vier Chancen auf einen Emmygewinn aber wenigstens wieder in der Kategorie "Outstanding Drama Series". Obwohl man dieses Jahr wen anderes gewinne lassen sollte (Lost oder Dexter).

Die Comedyserie 30 Rock bekam ganze 18 Nomierungen. Wie viele Awards die Serie am Ende erhält wird sich zeigen.

Die 60. Emmy Awards werden am 21. September 2008 verliehen.

Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour) : The Simpsons

Ok, I know that Robot Chicken and Creature Comforts America should be winning me over hands-down, but I have to give love to one of the best "Simpsons" episodes I've seen in a long time. It had a solid, yet playful narrative with an insight into Homer and family that I didn't think could seem so fresh after over a decade of exploring their characters in every way possible.

Outstanding Animated Program (1+ hours) : Imaginationland (South Park)

This special was just plain imaginative. I think the beauty of animation is that you can be more inventive with it than any other medium, and Parker an Stone have shown they know how to get the most out of their extra creative license.

Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series: Pie-lette (Pushing Daisies)

I know, I know. This is such a predictable choice since "Pushing Daisies" really relies on its art direction. But really, would "Pushing Daisies" BE "Pushing Daisies" without the whimsicle set pieces, ambiguously-vintage costumes, and delightful pies? Production designer Michael Wylie really created an autonomous world that is unflinchingly sweet and nostalgic --- and that contrasts beautifuly with the grimmer themes of death the show's plot surrounds.

Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series : Pushing Daisies

I'm pretty sure "30 Rock" is a shoe-in for this category because of its perfectly-casted guest roster, but I think "Pushing Daisies" ultimately earns this award for its initial casting as a new series. I mean, c'mon guys. It's Lee Pace.

(That said, if "The Office" were nominated, I would choose them right away because of the most perfect casting of Amy Ryan I've ever seen.)

Outstanding Cinematography for a Half-Hour Series : My Name is Earl

I just love the cinematography in this show. The washed-out whites and dull shadows just feel like a dingy border town.

Outstanding Cinematography for a One Hour : Dexter

I think the title sequence alone deserves the cinematography nod.

The episode itself lampoons Scientology by knocking its methodology, allegedly scientific basis, and status as a big, fat, global scam. It also lambasts the various celebrities that the so-called religion claims as a foundation for its legitimacy, including Tom Cruise (whose alleged homosexual proclivities give the episode its title and caused him to flip his shit just around the release of Mission Impossible 3 - which for the record was a bad-ass movie), and John Travolta.

I entirely agree with South Park's sentiments about this wretched attempt at a religion, and appreciate that Parker and Stone stepped into Scientology's own line of fire when they made this episode. In The Zen of South Park I compare the show's portrayal of Mormonism and Scientology in order to show how two religions that are totally invented (and in quite an obvious way) are not evaluated similarly.

Cartman, in an attempt to degayify himself after placing Butters’ schlong in his pie-hole (funny how that’s still slightly confusing), tries to have Butters’ swallow his salami (Kyle said that would work to reverse the gay polarity). When Mr. Stotch walks in on this momentous event, he freaks out and sends Butters’ to Camp New Grace where he’s supposed to pray the gay away. From there the episode is nothing short of remarkable and very important to The Zen of South Park.

We see the terrible effects of trying to force gay people to suppress their sexuality and why it’s such a horrible thing to do. After a camp experience where he’s forced to write scripture verses, hear all about how with Jesus’ help he can stop being confused - and he really is confused since he has no idea what bicurious is - and listen to lectures about being someone that he’s not, Butters gets fed up and offers us an amazing conclusion:

“I’m not gonna be confused anymore just because you say I should be! My name is Butters, I’m eight years old, I’m blood type O, and I’m bicurious! And even that’s okay! Because if I’m bicurious, and I’m somehow made from God, then I think your GOD must be a little bicurious himself!”

How beautiful that Butters comes to this conclusion by actually using ideas in the Bible and makes the other bicurious children feel better and less oppressed by the conservative Christian attitude that has been causing them to commit suicide instead of live a life as someone that they’re not. It really is an amazing episode - amazingly funny, amazingly intelligent and amazingly classic South Park.

Paljon provosointia, paljon kirosanoja, paljon varaa maissipeltojen pesiytymiseen syvälle nenäonkaloihin... Ah, loistava sarja.

Uusintana näytettävä sarja sarjamurhaaja-psykopaatti-rikostutkija Dexteristä, jota näyttelee Mullan alla -homo Michael C. Hall. Sarja perustuu Jeff Lindsayn Dexterin pimeät unet -romaaniin, ja sisältää monenlaista mietittävää, sekä tietysti ehkäpä brutaaleimman alkutunnuksen...

Muille tiedoksi: Louis Theroux tutustuu Phelpsin suurperheeseen, joka on siis Westboron äärikristillisen, fanaattisen ja muutenkin jokaisella tavalla äärimmäisen baptistikirkon taustalla. Kertonee varmaan tarpeeksi, että kyseinen kirkko päätti järjestää mielenosoituksen tammikuussa nuorena kuolleen näyttelijä Heath Ledgerin hautajaisissa, koska Ledger oli urallaan näytellyt homoseksuaalia elokuvassa Brokeback Mountain (2005).

Loistavin populaarikulttuuriaiheinen keskusteluohjelma, jota olen ikinä seurannut. Viikottain käydään läpi joku populaarikulttuurissa hyvin tyypillinen aihe, josta mielenkiintoiset studiovieraat keskustelevat hyvässä hengessä. Inserteissä nähdään lisää mielenkiintoisia pätkiä kyseiseen aiheeseen liittyvistä populaarikulttuurituotoksista sekä kuullaan mielipiteitä niistä monilta aiheiden pariin vihkiytyneiltä. Lisäksi ohjelmassa viljellään mielenkiintoisia listoja ja muuta hauskaa. Suosittelen ehdottomasti. Aiheina ollut tähän mennessä mm. seksi, rappio ja jumaluudet.

Parasta realistista sotakuvausta hetkeen. Sarjan tähtikaarti toimii, juoni on upea, erikoistehosteet näyttävät ja tyylikkäät, mutteivät kuitenkaan liian yliampuvat, ja kaikki muutenkin kohdallaan. Olen hehkuttanut sarjaa blogissani aiemminkin pariin otteeseen, jos haluat tutkia asiaa lisää, etsi oikealta löytyvästä aihepilvestä taistelutoverit-tagi.

Kolmiosainen dokumenttisarja valottaa ilmiöitä rock-sukupolven ajalta. Ja nimenomaan niitä vaihtoehtoisempia juttuja, kuten esimerkiksi tanga-mallisten alushousujen syntymistä... Ja paljon muutakin.

Globalna wioska, świat w którym żyjemy, aż prosi się o cięty i złośliwy komentarz. Taki który będzie zmuszał do myślenia zarazem zatruwając życie jego czołowych, głupiutkich maskotek. Gwiazdy kina, muzyki, politycy chcących zmieniać świat na lepsze, wielkie gesty, wielkie zmiany, cały ten szum coraz trudniej znieść. Czasem warto wypowiedzieć się o nich grubiańsko i chamsko, tak jak na to zasługują. Jaką cenę ponoszą nieraz ludzie głoszący swe opinie w taki sposób dobrze wiemy - zostają wrzuceni w niszę, lub skreśleni z życia publicznego - stają medialnymi persona non grata. Dlatego takie mocno krytyczne komentarze warto przykrywać duuużą dawką humoru i umowności, takim sprytnym kamuflażem posługują się już od dawna kabarety i... kreskówki.
Seriale animowane przeszły niesamowitą metamorfozę od słodkich obrazów o konikach na łące do emitowanych w późnych godzinach obrazoburczych tworów zatopionych w masskulturze. Sam bardzo cenię takie twory, bo pod warstwą (dość grubą) prostactwa zawierają sporo zarówno zmuszających do myślenia jak i prześmiesznych stwierdzeń, stanowiąc miły masaż mózgu. Gatunkiem rządzą oczywiście amerykanie, posiadając i najwięcej rzeczy do wyśmiania ;) i największe medium którym się mogą posługiwać – ich kablówka nie dość że posiada niewyobrażalną liczbę kanałów (w przeciętnym domu ma się wybór około 130!) to jeszcze są w niej stacje takie jak MTV czy Comedy Central. Wśród tego urodzaju wyłowiłem jakiś czas temu coś dla siebie. Drawn Together, bo o nim mowa, przedstawia 8miu zupełnie różnych bohaterów wrzuconych do wspólnego kreskówkowego domu. Pierwsze animowane reality show stało się faktem!

Cały zamysł i oryginalność tego obrazoburczego cartoon’a to realizacja bardzo prostego pomysłu: wrzucić w jedno miejsce jak najwięcej różnych charakterów i obserwować jakie relacje się miedzy nimi nawiążą. A, że ekipa składa się prawdziwych z uciekinierów z domu opieki psychicznej, to bywa wyjątkowo ciekawie. Każdy z nich przedstawia inny kanon klasycznego bohatera. Kanon oczywiście ujęty w tak krzywym zwierciadle jak tylko może być krzywe zwierciadło. Animowany wielki brat przed niczym nie musi się hamować, a jego zadania bywają niesamowicie okrutne, tak samo jak zwierzenia głównych bohaterów.
Być może Simpsonowie i South Park przetarli już szlaki, pewnie Futurama i Family Guy są u na ileś razy bardziej znane, ale mnie najbardziej zdobyło właśnie Drawn Together. Dzięki swej niezwykłej dynamice, wielowątkowości i temu, że może zdarzyć się w nim absolutnie wszystko.

Już sama konwencja, zmuszenia do współ egzystencji nie pasujących do siebie, inteligentnych inaczej (naprawdę to są idioci) bohaterów będących przedrzeźnieniem disneyowskich księżniczek, komiksowych herosów czy japońskich stworków bitewnych może wydawać się atrakcyjna. Gdy się to zobaczy na ekranie skąpanym w mistrzowskim rasistowsko – seksualno – fanatycznym młynie żartów można się popłakać ze śmiechu. Owszem jest to jechanie po sprawach bolesnych dla wielu osób, ale tu dostaje się każdemu, więc nikt nie powinien poczuć się urażony a pominięty to już na pewno nie.
Wiem, że dla większości osób ten styl satyry nie wydaje się ani mądry ani śmieszny, cóż jednak poradzić na to że taki... jest :) Niszczenie wszelakich świętości wynika z cudnych potyczek między uczestnikami show. Tu troll z jaskini zgwałcił martwego smoka, ukrzyżowano żabę, bawiono się w sado maso, wkładało penisy w dziury w ścianach, wrzucano sobie tabletki gwałtu do napojów, robiono sobie sznyty na ciele, wykorzystywało też Chińczyków do niewolniczej pracy za miskę ryżu... naprawdę polecam ;)

Najważniejsi są oczywiście uczestnicy show:

Ling-Ling – czyli jawnie frywolne wcielenie Pikachu. Ling Ling mówi językiem którego nikt wokół nie rozumie (za to widzowie mają przetłumaczone napisy podczas jego wypowiedzi, „Ling Ling no dog! Ling Ling here to destroy all!’ to teksty na jego poziomie), jego ‘pintała!!!’ brzmi wręcz poetycko, mimo iż nie mam pojęcia co oznacza. Azjatycki stwór zaskakuje nieraz cudną puentą, zawsze wypowiadaną w tonie chińskich mistrzów kung fu znanych ze starych filmów. Jest to także prześmiewcza wersja wielu wojowników z filmów karate, pełen honoru, patosu i prostolinijny Zwykle pełni rolę maskotki, ale nieraz okazuje się postacią nadającą najwięcej barw odcinkowi. Gdy samolot którym leciał zaczął płonąć od razu wskoczył do majtek pewnej murzynki wiedząc że czarna skrzynka jest najbezpieczniejszym miejscem - mistrzostwo. Zawsze gotowy do walki do ostatniej kropli krwi, w kryzysowych chwilach zmienia się w super-sayana. Szybko zdobywa sympatię widza, do tego stopnia, że gdy jest smutny to aż chce się go pocieszyć.

Foxxy Love – wspominana pani, która miała przyjemność gościć pomarańczowego stworka między nogami. Powstała na wzór nieznanej w Polsce bohaterki kreskówki Josie and the Pussycats. Mimo to można ją śmiało zakwalifikować jako stereotypową bardzo seksowną, czarnoskórą fankę sado maso ;) Mówi piękną ‘czarną angielszczyzną’ znaną z amerykańskiej telewizji czy hip-hopowych teledysków (lub wypowiedzi Shaquila O’neila – kto słyszał kiedykolwiek jakieś zdanie sklecone przez tego pana po meczu pewnie także kwiczał ze śmiechu) na czym budowany jest jej komizm. Typowa panienka duże – uda. Zwykle ląduje na seksualnym celowniku męskiej części domowników. Biseksualna fanka masturbacji (czasem dziwnymi przedmiotami).

Princess Clara – postać która od samego początku mocno atakuje widza swymi poglądami. jest fanatyczną chrześcijanką, myśląca że od pocałunku zajdzie w ciążę a przy tym piękną księżniczką, wyrwaną wprost z baśniowych historii dla dziewczynek. Przy okazji potrafi rozbroić swymi rasistowskimi, dobroduszno - prostackimi uprzedzeniami (choćby do żydów). Jej postać pięknie ośmiesza wszelakich bogaczy zamkniętych w swych złotych klatkach, odciętych od codziennych problemów ‘zwykłych’ ludzi. Jest nawet odcinek poświęcony temu co się kryje za jej majtkami – od razu mówię, że to nie to co zwykle się widuje za kobiecymi majtkami. Odpowiedzi na wszelkie pytania szuka w biblii Dzięki niej Jezus czuwa nad każdym epizodem Drawn Together ;) Z czasem ze słodkiej idiotki zmienia się w prawdziwa sukę, choć i tak cała jej siła, dzięki której zapada w pamięć widza od pierwszego kontaktu z DT leży w fanatyzmie religijnym.

Xandir P. Wifflebottom – czołowy gej tego serialu, dzięki czemu niewybredne żarty wręcz lgną do niego. Jego wygląd kojarzy się, i słusznie, z bishonenem wprost z gry konsolowej. Xandir reprezentuje bohaterów wirtualnych światów, ciągnąc za sobą cały ich ciężki bagaż – musi choćby ratować księżniczkę ( niełatwo takiej wytłumaczyć, że ma się inną orientację ;) ) a w przypadku chęci popełnienia samobójstwa musi stracić wszystkie ‘życia’ a nie tylko jedno. Prześmieszny typ, o mentalności rozchwianej emocjonalnie nastolatki, wzorowany na samym Linku z serii the Legend of Zelda. Ciągle pyta się 'What’s going on?' i nie pojmuje zła tego świata. Powiela całkowicie stereotyp geja-cioty przez co jest jeszcze zabawniejszy i zachęca do większej krytyki oburzonych obrońców moralności i panów z koszulką w tęczę. Takie życie, jak dla mnie jest rozbrajający.

Captain Hero – chodząco – latająca parodia Superbohaterów. Co by też o nim nie napisać na pierwszy plan wysuwa się to, że jest tępy. Do tego stopnia, że pomylił dziewczynkę z kozą a jednym z jego życiowych celów było zobaczenie wielbłąda. Najczęściej raczy widza puentą zupełnie mylną i nie pasującą do sytuacji – ciężko go nie uwielbiać ;) Strasznie ekstrawertyczny, szybko też popada w euforię czy rozpacz, a jego czarne łzy to coś co bezwzględnie warto ujrzeć. Nie rozumie chyba nic z tego co się wokół niego dzieje, tworząc niesamowity klimat głupawki w tym i tak chorym serialu.
Jego przygody seksualne ciężko spisać, w każdej i tak był przekomiczny, od gejowskich zdobyczy przez zabawę łańcuchami i biczami do gruchania opóźnionej kuzynki księżniczki Clary. Posiada też najbardziej dziecinnie- głupie – tępe żarty z całej załogi, definitywnie przegięty typ. Tępy mięśniak powtarzający pierwsza klasę trzeci raz? Oto C. Hero!

Wooldoor Sockbat – persona będąca odbiciem SpongeBob’a SquarePants’a (której osobiście absolutnie nie kojarzę). Żółty twór mogący wszystko w czym przeszkadza mu niestety inteligencja i wrażliwość na poziomie zwierzaczka. Nie pasująca do niczego, dziwna, przyprawiająca o schizy postać, wklejana zawsze tam gdzie trzeba zrobić coś niemożliwego. Do tego jest taki niewinny i dobroduszny, może wcielić się w każdą postać (jak myślicie kto udzielał gejowskiego ślubu dla dobra serialu?). Dziwny, ale niejednokrotnie rozbrajający bohater tego reality show.

Toot Braunstein – symbol seksu... lat 20stych i to widać. Narysowana została w równie ‘atrakcyjny; sposób co kreskówki z początku zeszłego wieku. Do tego cała czarno biała o głosie, który najspokojniejszych zdenerwuje. Autodestrukcyjna persona która w chwilach stresu sięga po żyletkę, po sprawnym cięciu przez udo całkowicie się luzuje. Scenarzyści definitywnie się nad nią pastwią, właściwie wszystko co obrzydliwe (jakiś śluz, smród etc) to jej partia. W roli wielkiej, starej, lecz ciągle napalonej baby spełnia się niepodzielnie. W sumie Betty Boop (na której jest wzorowana) dziś by tak się prezentowała. Uwielbia się obżerać i wrzeszczeć jak wredna zgorzkniałą starucha (god’dammit!). Szkoda, że ciągle ma problem ze zrozumieniem tego czemu mężczyźni jej nie adorują. Najczęstsze gagi wiążą się z jej nadwagą i jedzeniem wszystkiego niczym buldożer, stadko meksykańców w sombrerach łykła niczym parkomat monety.

Spanky Ham – humanoidalna świnia, będąca niczym innym jak uosobieniem wszechobecnego w Internecie flashowego natręctwa. Jego jedyną miłością jest rak. Chamski, samolubny, myślący tylko o sobie i o seksie. Często rozpada się na pojedyncze piksele i bardzo często robi kaka i psi psi do ciekawych miejsc. Jest chciwy i leniwy, gdy tylko nadarza się okazja wykorzystuje innych. Jest złym charakterem (od początku do końca) tej kreskówki, szukanie u niego cech pozytywnych mija się z celem. Można go za to bardzo polubić ;) zwykle bardzo wygadany, skupiający na sobie uwagę niewybrednymi komentarzami (mądrzejszymi niż się wydają), błyskotliwe puenty to zwykle jego zadanie.

Czy stworzenie takiego skupiska patologicznych charakterów mogło się nie udać ? Oczywiście, że mogło, dlatego tym większe gratulacje dla twórców - Dave’a Jeser’a i Matt’a Silverstein’a. Naprawdę zabłysnęli i zaimponowali mi niesamowicie swym jakże trafnym sparodiowaniem tylu powszechnych w naszej codzienności postaw. Zabawa jest przednia, choć w wielu przypadkach może okazać się zbyt mocno pojechana, zwłaszcza dla ‘lubiących się obrażać’.
Skończono niestety na trzech sezonach a i je przy dużym szczęściu ‘przepchnięto’. Autorzy zakończyli współprace z Comedy Central by oddać się kolejnemu projektowi (już dla Fox Broadcasting Company), robiąc prze-pojechane widowisko. Po pewnym czasie dotarło do Polski (z wspaniałym tytułem ‘Przerysowani), choć jest jeszcze zbyt słabo wypromowane. DVD z pełnymi sezonami tez jeszcze nie można u nas skupić, tym bardziej zachęcam do szukania w sieci odcinków z oryginalnym, amerykańskich dubbingiem (jest dużo lepszy jak nietrudno się domyśleć) i sprawdzenie jak powinien od samego początku wyglądać wielki brat ;)
Ogromna dawka rysunkowej przemocy, seksu i wulgaryzmów potrafi zapewnić rozrywkę tym dla których szczytem poczucia humoru jest głośne beknięcie po obiedzie i tym którzy widzą jak okropnie komercyjną papką stał się nasz świat. Wystarczy tylko wiedzieć jak do Drawn Together podejść. Szczerze polecam sprawdzić, bo zabawa jest przednia i oryginalna.

This episode, excellent as it is, has two things worth focusing on for The Zen of South Park. The first is it's self-reflective jabs regarding the length of a show's run and that it should be canceled. Yes, South Park is talking about itself...jokingly. South Park has numerous self-reflective jabs (think of the Cartoon Wars episodes, in particular). Can you think of any others?

The second thing that's great to focus on is the Jewish stereotypes. "What!?" you cry. "There are stereotypes involving people of Jewish descent?" Yes, I know it's shocking, but also shockingly true, and a number of them are explored in this episode, particularly the notion that Jews control the media. Yep, they're everywhere, especially when it comes to the media. Hitler knew it (see his Table Talks for evidence) and Trey and Matt know it. Considering the fact that Matt is Jewish, evidence of this stereotype is already emerging.

Joosians live on the planet Fognl, and are big green aliens that look suspiciously Jewish, have Brooklyn accents, control all the media in the universe and seem to be blood relatives of Kyle (discovered when they eat some gross food). If you don't understand any of the references I'm making or if any of the jokes from the actual episode seem unclear (and are related to Jewish stereotypes), don't hesitate to ask.

9. Purple Rain - Prince is a heck of a musician. This movie is sort of a long music video...so put Pink Floyd's: The Wall here too.

8. Nightmare Before Christmas - This Tim Burton movie is a creepy work of claymation.

7. Rock-n-roll High School - I actually haven't seen this, but I figure it's filled with the Ramones music, so its ok to see.

6. The Muppet Movie - What? You were 7 once too. This movie was awesome. All the other Muppet movies are ok to watch too.

5. South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut - I didn't even think about this being a musical until I saw it listed as that on IMDB. So kudos to Matt and Trey for creating a cartoon with foul-mouthed songs.

4. Tommy - I mentioned this above. This just has a bunch of cool musicians from that era all in one messed up world of a "rock opera". "Pinball Wizard" is a cool song. And, the Who still get to smash their instruments in it.

3. Reefer Madness - No, not the one made in the 30's. That's just crap. Stupid pot propaganda. The musical made in 2005, is sweet. It totally makes fun of the original.

2. Sweeny Todd - Take a dark world, add Helena Carter, multiply by Johnny Depp and you have...well, almost every Tim Burton movie. This movie was cool. Johnny Depp does an (expected) awesome job. The younger guy that falls for Todd's daughter is a bit "fugly" but he can sing.

1. Across the Universe - The Beatles rock. This has already been established. So when I heard this movie was coming out, I had to see what they'd do with it. I mostly expected to see how they screwed stuff up. But, I was pleasantly suprised. It's a real musical, and all the songs work. Ok, maybe they really didn't need the Eddie Izzard one, just cause it over-does the "psychadelic" portion of the movie.

4. Pretty cool looking update of Gallaga. Many fine memories of playing this at the Munster Pizza Hut. This version is deliciously seizure enducing and colorful.

A South Park video game, hmm...

Does anybody have any idea what the premise will be or how it will work? Have you heard anything else? Would you get this game (pending you have the platform for it and know more about it)?

What would you like to see in a South Park Video Game?

When Uncle Jimbo and Chef get into a heated argument about the South Park flag and whether or not it's racist (4 white men are depicted hanging a black man), the mayor decides to base her decision on the outcome of the children's school debate on the issue. Though the whole episode is funny and poignantly dramatic - Chef's wrestling with the fact that no one he knows supports his fight to have this flag changed - it is the conversation between Chef and Kyle at the actual debate that's so moving.

Spoiler Alert

It is absolutely one of my favorite moments in South Park history when Chef realizes that the children are so not-racist, despite his previous assumptions, that they never even saw the issue surrounding the flag as one of race because they never saw the color of the people on the flag. They just saw people killing people and thought that the whole issue was about murder. Chef is amazed at this wonderful turn of events and it brings him back down to earth, exercising reason and resolving to handle the problem more thoughtfully.

In typical South Park fashion, the happy conclusion of the entire episode is derived by creating a compromise and finding the Middle Ground, a message much emphasized in The Zen of South Park.

Den medienbegeisterten Surfer wirds allerdings freuen: Beim Onlineangebot des zweiten deutschen Fersehens läßt sich bequem die heute-Sendung in Originallänge oder in zeitsparender 100-Sekunden Version anschauen oder bekannte Sendungen des laufenden ZDF-Programms via Stream kostenlos am Monitor verfolgen. Sehr gut ist auch die Suchfunktion: Bei Eingabe von bspw. "Oliver Pocher" läßt sich ein Interview vor "Wetten Dass" und seine Januar-Auftritte bei Kerner nochmals betrachten. Die South Park Studios bzw. Comedy Central haben den Fans von Kyle, Stan, Kenny und Cartman vor einigen Monaten ein großes Geschenk gemacht: Nahezu alle bisher in den USA ausgestrahlten South Park Folgen (immerhin 12 Staffeln) sind kostenlos im Internet als Stream erhältlich. Hey folks, I'm Second Solution. I'm a mate of Dimorphic's who will be helping the blog out over this busy time in any game journalists life, E3.

Now on to the important stuff, a quick update on E3:

Today we saw the announcement Portal: Still Alive. This is a new version of Portal that was packaged with the Orange Box in 2007. It will be released on the XBLA in 2008 and will include the original single player experience as well as a brand new challenge mode which is bound to have any Portal fan excited.

Another title that was announced was a video game version of the hit TV show South Park. This will also be released on the XBLA in 2009 and will hopefully make a lot of South Park fans (such as myself) very happy. Unfortunately if you want to go off past South Park games, the chances of this one being a hit is low,  but in my opinion still worth a try.

Okay, there is NO information I have on this game, but I had to post anyways. When I said "Teased" at the top, I meant it. Probably a seven second clip was shown, but it didn't show anything related to the actual game. We did get to hear Cartman complain, and that was a plus.

Unfortunately, due to Gamespot not loading up as the press conference went live, I missed the Fallout 3 demo, a game that I would have wanted to see more of. I did however manage to catch the latter half of the Resident Evil 5 demo, which looked amazing. I've never really been a fan of the series but playing the game on co-op with a friend looks like a lot of fun, it also looks as if they have made the game a lot more playable then previous games in the series. A release date of FRIDAY THE 13TH of March 2009 was also announced.

Next up was a rather short demo of Fable 2 by its enthusiastic developer Peter Molyneux. He stated that the game was finished, showed off the intro cut scene and then proceeded to try and blow our minds. Its easy to mock Peter Molyneux, but I do like his enthusiasm. I can't wait to play Fable 2, even if it isn't quite as open-ended and innovative as he claims (not saying that it won't be, but....), it will probably still end up being a great game. A release date of October was announced.

The next demo was Gears of War 2, with Cliff Bleszinski playing some co-op campaign. I enjoyed the first Gears a lot but never really got into the multiplayer, so the campaign is what I'm looking forward to in the sequel. The demo was very impressive and showed off many of the new weapons, one of which appeared to be a flamethrower that is pretty cool. The more destructible environments seem to make the gunfights more intense, which can only be a good thing. The game was announced to have November 7th release.

After all the excitement of demo's, Don Mattrick, went on about some business figures etc, basically a fight with Sony. After that however, Xbox live business guy John Schappert, announced and showed off the new dashboard and the avatars that are to replace gamer pictures which looked like slightly more realistic Mii's. The avatar will now appear on the re-designed gamercard next to your gamerscore, rep etc. I think it's really just a rip off of the Wii's Mii's but if they are used in a interesting way, it could be relatively exciting. As for the new dashboard, I really like it. Its much more slick than the current interface. This new stuff will be rolling out as the 'fall' update.

Next announced were some XBLA games, Geometry Wars 2, Galaga Legions, a nebulous South Park game, and Portal: Still Alive, which is the most exciting for me personally. There were also trailers for Rare's Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts which looks very interesting and Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise. They then showed off You're In The Movies, a game from ZoeMode (developers of Crush), which basically looked like an Eye Toy rip off with a movie maker tagged on. An already leaked game was then shown off called 'Lips', which is basically Singstar only you can use your own music, which is pretty cool if that's your thing. Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: On tour were then spoken about buy their respective developers. The rhythm music genre has become strangely competitive all of a sudden. Sqaure Enix announced some other RPG's which were overshadowed by FFXIII, those being, Star Ocean, The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery.

Sony and Nintendo's Press conferences are tomorrow and will no doubt have some big news of their own. Damage control at Sony's no doubt. I hope to see some information about God of War 3, Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet. As for Nintendo, I want to see anything that might interest me, maybe something on a new Kid Icarus or Animal Crossing Wii. Either way I can't wait to see what Sony And Nintendo have up their sleeves.

Portal, título que apareció en The Orange Box llegará en un juego exclusivo para Xbox Live Arcade con nuevos retos y mapas, su nombre: Portal: Still Alive.

Además la secuela del primer éxito de este sistema, Geometry Wars 2, el cual podrá ser descargado el próximo mes.

La secuela de Galaga aparece, pues Galaga Legions es la primera secuela que tendrá este clásico después de 20 años.

Finalmente Uno Rush, el clásico y sencillo juego de cartas, y South Park llegarán al Live Arcade y éste último fue mostrado en un corto video.

these are way up in the mountains... about 1,300 feet above sea level.  you can see on the picture to the right that there is still snow on the mountains... in july!

Apparently, like the United States earlier in the century, Australia has been hit by a host of scandals related to Catholic priests molesting young boys. Thus, Pope Benedict XVI, who I must say, I've been totally impressed with thus far as a world diplomat, is going to apologize. But why am I impressed? Well, this pope, like his predecessor, has not shied away from the public light. Maybe he's a media whore, though I doubt it, or perhaps he just wants to use his influence as pope to send some positive messages and broker some deals. Fortunately for the world, most of those deals have emphasized peace and positive change.

Unfortunately, none of that change has related to the strictures of the Catholic church that would probably help curb child molestation, like say, allowing priests to marry women and live 'normal lives' (though I think they should be allowed to be gay too and marry men - full grown men - if that's their preference, I don't want to push it...one step at a time). But hey - change is still good if it's in the right direction (unlike the change that pre-Vatican II Catholics like Mel Gibson want which is a reversion to the way things were before the Church said things like, sorry Jews for all the persecution since you didn't f-up our savior).

However, the pope has met with Turks and Muslims (mostly due to a verbal faux pas) in an attempt to broker more peaceful relations and diffuse some tense situations. He has met with numerous world leaders about far more than the Catholics in their countries but also about maintaining peace and general human progress. It may sound like fluff and nonsense but when you're the ruler of the tiniest country around but with the largest ex-pat community, so to speak (and a faith based community at that), you better believe that there's not so much else you have to talk about. Except when it comes to apologizing for child molestation. Well, that and a climate change festival titled World Youth Day.

The mixing of these messages is not one that I see as tactically wise, though I understand where the sentiment comes from. It's like when Charlie Sheen, the notorious sex addict, was involved with rumors about seeking girls that were a little too underage (yes, there's underage and a little too underage) and then released a line of clothing for pre-school aged girls. Harmless? Probably. Well-intentioned? No doubt. Good timing? Oooo - not so much. And that's how I feel about talking about World Youth Day while apologizing for Catholic sexual abuse scandals.

However, World Youth Day is about positive change in our daily lives in order to affect the environment for sustainable future development. Though I'm not big on the global warming rhetoric, as you may know, I do appreciate positive social and personal change for the sake of improving the environment and seeking more sustainable resources. So, large goofy hats off to you Pope Benedict XVI, and keep up the good work.

I don't reject art because I disagree with it, but I do find it interesting to think of how its political identity relates to that of its audience. Another example of intentionally-shocking art that I've been thinking about lately (because it's been back in the media, naturally) is one of the great rock albums, Liz Phair's 'Exile in Guyville.' The album may not be particularly shocking today (this is one of the reasons why Chris Dahlen's review in Pitchfork Media claims that the album now sounds dated), but in its time it was fairly notorious for the highly explicit presentation of Phairs's (Phair the character's, if not Phair the actual person's) sex life. The album has often been called feminist, and feminism often shows through in Phair's independence and sexual aggression, which places her in a traditionally masculine role. But the absence of a traditional relationship is conspicuous, and the need for one comes to the surface in 'Fuck and Run:'

Whatever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who tries to win you over
Whatever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who make loves 'cause he's in it
I want a boyfriend
I want all that stupid old shit, like letters and sodas.

There's nothing necessarily reactionary about the need for stability, even if takes the form of "letters and sodas," and it's fairly clear that the relationship Phair wants is an egalitarian one, but the album presents the alternative to jukebox-and-milkshake heterosexuality as bleak and loveless, and makes some pretty clear attempts to shock people with the details of it. This takes a bit of the irony out of these lines. There is a real longing for the courtship rituals of the (idealized) past in them.

But I don't think this longing is reactionary. I would compare it with the sentiment of the Modernist poets, and in particular T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. If the main idea of Modernism was that poetry can only be successful if it has a strong sense of the 'now' - T.S. Eliot once claimed that the most important thing for a young poet to study is the internal combustion engine - the Modernists had very little affection for the time they lived in. The Modernists' fixation on classical antiquity is in part explained by their belief that an understanding of the present must be grounded in an understanding of the past, but the genuine longing for a return to Byzantium was not peculiar to Yeats. What redeems the Modernists from being nothing more than curmudgeons is that they knew full well that the present was not the past, and that the time in which they lived really was that bad. Their longing for tradition came from a serious feeling of uprootedness that affected people across Europe and the U.S. in the first three decades of the twentieth century, and the sense of 'tradition' that they longed for never entailed stasis.

Phair's work is, in much the same way, directed towards the present rather than the past - the record's immersion in the indie rock culture of the early nineties is the other reason Dahlen calls it dated - and even though her longing for "all that stupid old shit" really is genuine, it does retain the bitterer part of its irony: she knows that it's not coming back. The pathos in this situation could be interpreted as reactionary, except that Phair seems to be aware of the falsehood of the idealized past she craves; the real cause of her predicament is her inability to reconcile the actual nature of her life with the lingering remains of the tradition from which it has violently broken off which still reside in her consciousness. Classical feminism may not work this way - most of Katherine Mansfield's protagonists, for instance, find themselves acting out social roles that they don't genuinely feel engaged with, while Phair finds herself disengaged from social roles that she still has internalized. But that doesn't mean Phair is not a feminist. Like Mansfield's characters, she is after a way to resolve her life with the way she really feels, and a return to the strictures of the past is not the way to do that.

(Also, in response to the allmusic.com piece I linked to, which says of the album's supposed parallel with the Rolling Stones' 'Exile on Main Street,' "Just try to match the albums up: is the 'blow-job queen' fantasy of 'Flower' really the answer to the painful elegy 'Let It Loose'?" Of course it is, and the fact that 'Flower' takes the place of a spiritual is one of the album's most cutting jabs.)
