I grabbed the Mac version (with native Aqua interface) from the UK mirror server a short time ago but there is a long list of worldwide mirror servers at the distribution.openoffice.org site.

I had a quick play with the suite this morning and so far I'm impressed. The Writer component managed to import my CV (resume) with no problems. It's a Word document with lots of fancy tables so the software coped well to keep all the elements where they should be. The interface looks a little dated with white toolbars, but for a free office suite the Mac version of OOo 3.0 looks like a highly usable bargain. Also available for Linux, Solaris and Windows, read on for a screenshot gallery.

it's very important to understand that this will work if your LUNs are configured as a SUN type disk (Slice 2 contain all disk) if not then you have to modify the script

It is said that first impressions lasts forever. Well, I sure hope these first impressions won

It is said that first impressions lasts forever. Well, I sure hope these first impressions won't keep me from using Solaris in the future. So, yes, I decided to try out Solaris, and I downloaded the VMWare virtual machine images from Sun. First there's the usual annoying questionnaire about who you are, what you do, why you want I to try Solaris. Everything short of my income and investment strategy.

So I download the file with what seems to have the biggest version number, but it turns out that's only the second half of the virtual machine. And it's a stupid tar bomb. OK, I reread the thing, and there's no clear, visible indications that there are two parts to the tar ball and that I should download the two. Never mind that, bandwidth's is cheap.

So I untar the two tar bombs into a newly created directory and launch vmplayer—I must say that, before you point it out to me, is quite enough for my VM needs, or so I thought. So Solaris launches and pops out a ridiculously large login window. Something like 2560x1726. Because it's so big, the window explodes over my screen and some window controls are hidden. Why, thank you for asking if I wanted it that large. A strange interaction between vmplayer, Solaris and Linux disables ctrl, alt and shift, I must use setxkbmap to reset it. I manage to somewhat bring the window to my screen size (using alt+middle button), but I still had to use the scroll bars to reach the login dialog.

Now, as I type the login name—root, of course—I discover that there's something else wrong with the keyboard. But this time, the keyboard as seen by the VM. I type root and I see rroootttt in the dialog box. Curiously enough, alphanumeric keys repeat randomly, but not backspace. So after typing the password as if I was plucking fleas from a sleeping tiger, and ten retries, I manage to log in.

So I rush (after scrolling and panning to get there, that is) to the Gnome keyboard configuration applet and try different settings before discovering the only thing that will keep random repetition of keys is to disable auto-repeat altogether. That'll be fun with backspace. Especially that it was the only key that seems to behave as expected. So I open a shell. OK, default terminal configuration does not support the arrows.~[[A~[[B^H^H dammit! OK, delete works. It's like BASH is in some weird VI mode, or something.

I change the resolution to a more reasonable 1600x1200, which doesn't eat up all my display but is still somewhat spacious.

OK, so now I have a shell, I change the password to nothing since there's no way I'm going to type password ten times like I'm disarming a bomb or something ever again.

Now, let us see what it can do. Hmm OK, commands are different, but that somewhat expected since it's a different OS. It's minimalistic, it doesn't have any accounts created, it's a bit dry, but I start exploring the differences between Solaris and Linux. So I launch the browser to look for tutorial. Ah. Network doesn't work.

Turns out that the VM doesn't detect the current host VM settings—it doesn't see my already functioning vmnetn adapters, which are functioning perfectly fine in XP. It has vmxnet0 hard coded somewhere in the configuration. I'm not a VMWare whiz, so I do not find where I can set a vmxnet0 device, or alias it to an existing virtual device. So after googling a while, it appears that the only smart way of configuring network for the VM is to call sys-unconfig that... well, resets the OS configuration such as networking, time and time zones and a few other things (luckily enough, it doesn't erase user-level settings such as resolution). So I lunch sys-unconfig and it seems to just freeze the OS. After waiting a while, I reset the VM. It reboots, and goes through something that looks like dpkg-reconfigure or maybe more accurately anaconda. It asks me if I want to use Xorg's or Sun's X server, but not in what resolution I'd like it to start by default. That means that the next login will be in 2560x1726 again. After that, it asks which VMWare adapter I want, it offers vmxnet0 but I can only accept it. So I completed the configuration. Window explodes again. Login screen in 2560x1726. And network doesn't work either.

As far as first impressions go, what've I seen so far is a bit like discovering that the fun, smart, sexy girl you're having dinner with for the first time speaks like an amphetamine-loaded hamster after her second glass of wine. Maybe not a show stopper, but you'll remember to go easy on wine.

I downloaded the DVD ISO from Sun and see what I'll manage to do with that later this week.

My October 2008 column has been published in ;login:. This month it’s about Solaris System Analysis - detailed steps to take to determine why a system is "slow" or "busted". Some ;login: contents is freely available at ;login:, but my column this month is not one of them. I’ve posted the .pdf here for those without a USENIX membership (although I strongly recommend you get one if you are interested in all things Unix).

The wiki that started with my August 2008 column will be expanded (as soon as I get the time) to include this new content. It's very lonely having a wiki of one, so please consider contributing your thoughts to what I've started. It would be a great advance in systems administration if there was a canonocal source of first-step debugging information, and hopefully you will help make this wiki that source: http://wiki.sage.org/bin/view/Main/AllThingsSun

Συνδεόμενος μέσω SSH σε κάποιο μηχάνημα Solaris από OS X, πάω να ανοίξω τον Vi και βλέπω το παρακάτω μήνυμα:

$:vi

Visual needs addressable cursor or upline capability

Στη συνέχεια δοκιμάζοντας με Emacs:

$:emacs
emacs: Terminal type xterm-color is not defined.
If that is not the actual type of terminal you have,
use the Bourne shell command `TERM=... export TERM' (C-shell:

to do `unset TERMINFO' (C-shell: `unsetenv TERMINFO') as well.

export TERM=vt100

Well, last night, I accidentally deleted my backup hard disk (500GB). Was pondering on reformatting it to install back Windows Vista there together with some backup files, whilest planning on installing Linux (or maybe Solaris) on the other disk (160GB). Alas, the inevitable happened. All of my backup apps and some docs PLUS the cherished Anime I've been saving for quite some time now was wiped out. LOL! Stupid me... anyhow, it's alright... I'll just start from scratch. Good thing I've left some backup apps and my also cherished MP3s (mostly Anime/JPOP, LOL) here on my laptop computer. Whew... time to rebuild my lost empire of purely otakuness once again. Hehe. :D

I saw this article by InfoWorld’s Paul Krill via Simon’s delicious links. Paul’s

I saw this article by InfoWorld's Paul Krill via Simon's delicious links. Paul's article ponders whether Solaris is on its deathbed, based largely on comments from the Linux Foundation's Jim Zemlin who believes it is. Some quotes that caught my attention:

"The future is Linux and Microsoft Windows," says foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin. "It is not Unix or Solaris."

...

But with capabilities such as ZFS and DTrace, Sun is trying to compete based on minor features, Zemlin says. "That's literally like noticing the view from a third-story building as it burns to the ground." And the Linux community is working on rival technology, Zemlin adds.

...

A key reason is that more people are available to support Linux than Solaris, says Noah Broadwater, vice president of information services at Sesame Workshop. "I honestly have one person who is certified on Solaris. I have four people who are certified on Linux," Broadwater said.

For those of you that don't know, according to their website, "The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit consortium dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux".

I must say, I'm torn on this one. On one hand, Sun is a member of the Linux Foundation (at the same level as Red Hat), so it's unsettling to read Zemlin attacking Sun (Solaris) to the degree he has. On the other hand, Sun's revenue from a Linux-based operating system pales in comparison to Sun's Solaris revenue. Just because Sun offers the former, should that bar Linux proponents from making competitive statements against the latter? Also, the Linux Foundation's goal is to grow the use of Linux. And OpenSolaris/Solaris is not Linux. So, as harsh as Zemlin's words were, at least for my sensitive Canadian eyes, it's difficult to argue that he overstepped his bounds. Linux and open source proponents have made similarly outlandish comments about the death of Microsoft products. The good people at Microsoft (and other closed-source vendors) have dirty hands also. I guess all's fair in love and enterprise software.

In the end however, I doubt that the story will play out as cleanly as Zemlin suggests. Customers will continue to choose Linux, Windows and Solaris, as they continue to choose OS X, HP-UX, AIX, z/OS and even OS/2. Customers are significantly more nuanced than we'd like to paint them.

As an aside, I find it particularly interesting that Linux certified professionals are becoming easier to find than professionals certified on other platforms.

What do you think?

Maybe, a lot of you know what Single User Mode is and how to recover your's filesystem.
In this short article i'll talk about zfs on OpenSolaris.
I'm using Indiana-OpenSolaris, build 98.
I'm not a zfs skilful user, but i try to share my little knowlege with you.

Few weeks ago, for my experiments i broke one of my filesystem's config file. So i couldn't boot anymore. For my bad lucky star :D i hadn't the possibility to access as Single User and all my installating dvd didn't allow me to do.
There were few minutes of terror because, yes, i have a backup of my most important files but all the work of configuration, customization shall go to fu...*

But there is a solution, indeed i'm at seven sky and it also shows how zfs is powerful.
Who uses solaris or opensolaris knows that the name of disks and their partitions (not as unix-like hd0, hd1 etc..etc..) are different and not too much mnemonic ... so i didn't remember mine.

Now, let's go to see how access to your zfs.

Step 1: insert Live CD and starts it.

Step 2: From Live CD's terminal, you should be able to access the already installed ZFS pool :
$ pfexec zpool import -f rpool
if you have more rpool (ex. more than one opensolaris installation), type just :
$ pfexec zpool import
pool: rpool
id: 3778921145927357706
state: ONLINE
action: The pool can be imported using its name or numeric identifier.
config:
tank ONLINE
c1t0d0 ONLINE
c1t1d0 ONLINE
pool: rpool
id: 11207595758743636757
state: ONLINE
action: The pool can be imported using its name or numeric identifier.
config:
rpool ONLINE
c4d1s0 ONLINE
I'm interested by the second rpool, so now you can type:
$ pfexec zpool import rpool_id

Step 3: Create a temporany directory to mount your rpool:
$ mkdir /tmp/a

Step 4: Mount your rpool:
$ pfexec zfs set mountpoint=/tmp/a rpool/ROOT/preview2

Step 5: change defective files.

Now you can reboot the system.
Access to it and before you enjoy it, you have to remember to add "single user" row in your grub's configure file. How can you do it?
Open the grub's file (/boot/.../menu.lst), copy the rows about opensolaris's access, change the title and add a '-s' at the end of the kernel line, so:
title Indiana - OpenSolaris failsafe (or whatever you want call it)
kernel /boot/multiboot kernel/unix -s
module /boot/x86.miniroot-safe

Good luck!!!

ps: i'm sorry for my english. i have to improve it. if there are mistakes, be patient and feel free to tell me it. ;)

New supply over next 5 years projected at about 7.8m sq ft: CBRE
WITH the Singapore market still dig

New supply over next 5 years projected at about 7.8m sq ft: CBRE

WITH the Singapore market still digesting the fact that there is about 10.2 million sq ft of office space in the pipeline, news that there is also substantial business park space coming is not likely to go down well.

According to CB Richard Ellis, projected new supply of business park space over the next five years is about 7.8 million sq ft. This includes developments like The Icon@International Business Park, Solaris, Mapletree Business City, and Centric Singapore.

CBRE also believes 67 per cent of this has already been pre-let.

By comparison, only about 25 per cent of future office supply is thought to be pre-let.

While certain conditions apply before anyone can move into a business park space, it has become increasingly clear that businesses themselves have no qualms about moving to the outskirts of the city. Already, Changi Business Park has attracted MNCs like Citigroup, Standard Chartered Bank and Credit Suisse.

CBRE executive director (office services) Moray Armstrong added that many new leases in business parks ‘are in motion’, boosted by the availability of quality business parks.

‘The business parks have evidently been the sweet spot for many occupiers over the past 12 months,’ he added.

And business parks, which Mr Moray describes as a ‘hybrid’ of traditional office space and high-tech industrial space, is set to evolve even more.

While Changi Business Park is characterised by individual developable land plots available for end users or developers to construct build-to-suit corporate buildings, Mr Armstrong reveals that the upcoming 1.7 million sq ft Mapletree Business City in the Alexandra vicinity will be a more office-like integrated precinct including retail space under single ownership. It is also just minutes from the CBD.

And the concept is proving to be popular as over 400,000 sq ft of pre-lease deals have already been done ahead of completion in H2 2010.

Demand for business park space is likely to grow at the expense of standard office space. Business park rents, at an average $3.15 psf per month in Q2 2008, are considerably lower than average prime rents of $16.10 psf per month.

But while Mr Armstrong believes that business parks will certainly compete to an extent and will slightly dilute overall office demand, he said: ‘Nonetheless, we do not expect this to impact the office sector significantly.’

He added: ‘There is far less speculative business park development as a rule. Most projects that are being built are pre-let or built-to-suit.’

According to CBRE’s analysis, Grade A office space vacancy remained tight in Q2 ‘08 at 0.6 per cent. However, vacancy rates for the CBD fringe rose significantly from 4.6 to 7 per cent.

For the same period, vacancy rates for decentralised areas dipped to 1.6 per cent from 3 per cent. CBRE noted there was ‘heightened interest’ in the Alexandra/Harbourfront micromarket.

Interestingly, new supply could also have a diluting effect on the business park space segment as well. JTC’s Q2 ‘08 quarterly facilities report reveals that its occupancy level for its business park space declined marginally by 0.4 percentage points quarter-on-quarter to 94.3 per cent. This was partly attributed to new supply from Fusionopolis which saw gross allocation of about 450,000 sq ft of space.

UBS Investment Research estimates that financial firms occupy 20 per cent of CBD offices and 30-50 per cent of the prime buildings within it.

UBS does not expect major job losses here from the fallout of the US financial crisis. Losses, if any, will only occur in 2009. Still, it said that if even between 1.5-6 per cent of the estimated 156,900 financial sector jobs are lost, it could equate to a drop in demand in office space of between 243,000 and 971,000 sq ft.
