Heute hat Mozilla die Thunderbird Version 2.0.0.12 veröffentlicht. Die meisten Benutzer erhalten automatisch eine Updatemeldung.

Im aktuellen Update werden 5 Sicherheitslücken geschlossen.

Die Entwickler stufen eine Lücke als kritisch ein da über sie schädlicher Programmcode eingespielt werden kann.

Mit speziellt präparierten Anhängen kann durch einen Pufferüberlauf schädlicher Programmcode auf den Rechner eingespielt werden.
Thunderbird reserviert für Anhänge die mit MIME kodiert wurden möglicherweise 3 Bytes zu wenig.

Die anderen Fehler sind auch in FireFox oder SeaMonkey vorhanden gewesen, wurden dort allerdings schon behoben.
Durch manipulierte BMP Bilder konnten Speicherbereiche ausgelesen werden.
Benutzer von Thunderbird sollten schnellst möglich die neue Version einspielen.

E’ stata rilasciata la nuova versione del Browser by Apple. Safari raggiunge la sua versione 3.1. Con questa nuova versione arrivano importanti novità. Questa versione del Browser carica le pagine web ad una velocità 1.9 volte superiore rispetto ad IE 7 e 1.7 volte superiore rispetto a Firefox 2. Philip Schiller, senior vice president Worldwide Product Marketing di Apple ha affermato: “Safari 3.1 per Mac e Windows è straordinariamente facile da usare e caratterizzato da un’elegante interfaccia utente. E soprattutto, Safari supporta gli standard di ultima generazione per l’audio, il video e l’animazione per un’esperienza Web 2.0 all’avanguardia del mercato.” Inoltre questa nuova versione del programma, supporta il nuovo formato HTML 5. Netscape Browser 9.0.0.6

Netscape Navigator fu il primo web browser grafico di successo della storia dell'informatica. Dalla versione 8 il suo nuovo nome è Netscape Browser. L'ultima versione è la 9 per la quale non è previsto alcun successore: il primo marzo 2008 AOL, la società che ne detiene i diritti, ha infatti dichiarato la fine del progetto Netscape.Il 28 dicembre 2007^[3], nel blog ufficiale del browser, viene però annunciata la fine del progetto per il primo febbraio 2008. AOL dichiara che, nonostante i grandi sforzi compiuti per rilanciare il marchio Netscape contro lo storico rivale Microsoft Internet Explorer, il progetto non è riuscito a raggiungere gli obiettivi preposti, invitando gli utenti Netscape a adottare Firefox o Flock come browser preferito. Seit ein paar Tagen ist ein neues Update für das Addon Scribefire, dem Blog-Editor für Firefox verfügbar. In der Version 1.4.7 wurden nicht nur einige Bugs beseitigt, es wurde auch eine Kompabilität zu SeaMonkey und Firefox 3 hinzugefügt.
Die Eintragung von Tags in Technorati war schon länger möglich, Tags Eintragungen für den Social Bookmark Manager del.ico.us ist neu hinzugekommen

Ongelma on korjattu ohjelmien uusimmissa versioissa, joten on syytä päivittää ohjelmat heti Thunderbird versioon 2.0.0.12 tai SeaMonkey versiooon 1.1.8.

But seriously I thought it was a one time off, like perhaps my browser did a Whitney on me.
But yesterday Is surfed up to IE -- yes, I'm quite the anarchist -- and found out that the images turned out OK. So except for that one time when Cookie Nakamura' photo went MIA, Photobucket has been quite kind to me.
Which brings me to today when Firefox still failed me. I had to upload images to my Wordpress account, and then place the images on the blog entries.
So crappy to have to edit excessively. Come on, this not the NYTimes.

• Bruksela jest fajna.
• Takoż i źarcie w La Boussole i Le Roy d'Espagne. W tej drugiej knajpie polecam "karbonadę po flamandzku na piwie Leff Brune". Ponadto jeśli ktoś ma mało czasu, a chce przejść przyspieszony kurs belgijskiego piwa - za osiem euro z hakiem ww "Królu Hiszpanii" dostanie "palette degustation", czyli 5 malutkich (0,1 l.) piw, każde innego rodzaju. Wiedziałem, że Leff jest całkiem niezłe, teraz okazało się, że i Hoegaarden również. :)
• Brytyjski lumpenproletariat wieczorami w Brukseli zachowuje się równie kulturalnie jak w Krakowie.
• FOSDEM rośnie. Wprawdzie w tym roku nie było Richarda Stallmana (2006), ani sensacji pod tytułem "Java na GPL!" (2007), a "opening keynote" poświęcona była Linuksowi w Hollywood, za to sale poszczególnych projektów F/LOSS pękały w szwach. Problem gandalfa - za dużo interesujących sesji jednocześnie - nie był tylko jego problemem.
• W głównej sali jakieś 30% laptopów stanowiły MacBooki - białe, czarne i "Pro". Rok temu ilość iBooków i MacBooków łącznie w głównej sali nie przekraczała 10%.
• Spod Mac OS X wyświetlane były prezentacje w sali głównej - przynajmniej te, które widziałem: dwa początkowe wykłady (Linux w Hollywood, patenty) i "endgame".  Podobnie - wszystkie prezentacje (poza jedną, Roberta Kaisera) w sali Mozilli. Zdecydowana większość w Apple Keynote, niektóre w S5 pod Firefoksem lub SeaMonkey. Nie zauważyłem nic w OpenOffice...
• O tym, że sala Mozilli w sobotę zamieniła się w saunę, wiecie już, jeśli przeczytaliście post Huberta... :)
• "Mozilla is going mobile and this time we mean it!". Firefox Mobile będzie dostępny dla Linuksa, Windows CE (czy jak to-to się teraz zwie) i być może również Symbiana. Nie jest jasna przyszłość Firefoksa Mobile na iPhonie/iPodzie touch, jako że SDK do iPhone'a wciąż pozostaje zagadką.
• Tenże Firefox Mobile powstanie na bazie XULRunnera. W przeciwieństwie do śp. Minimo będzie więc zawierał interfejs zbudowany w XUL i będzie obsługiwał rozszerzenia. Tak więc możecie się spodziewać, że np. AdBlocka i GreaseMonkey odpalicie na smartfonie. :)
• Mozilla Prism (dawniej "WebRunner") - dzięki niej można zbudować przeglądarkę przeznaczoną dla jednej konkretnej witryny (czy raczej: aplikacji webowej). Nie przerabiaj swojej aplikacji webowej na desktopową, zrób sobie tylko do niej w trzy minuty własną przeglądarkę. Jeśli ten projekt wejdzie w stadium 1.0 w rozsądnym terminie, klepanie czegokolwiek pod Adobe AIR będzie tylko stratą czasu.
• Mozilla Weave - czyli profil przeglądarki dostępny zdalnie, za to szyfrowany po stronie klienta, dzięki czemu zachowana zostaje prywatność. Eksperymentalny projekt Mozilla Labs.
• Miro - czyli społecznościowa konkurencja dla Joosta. Kolejne świetne zastosowanie XULRunnera.
• Polska rośnie w siłę. Przynajmniej jeśli chodzi o liczbę użytkowników Firefoksa.
• Mozilla.org skończyła 10 lat, z której to okazji zaproszono nas na kręgle. :)
• Ha, w końcu udało mi się wziąć na chwilę w łapska OLPC. :)
• I Eee PC też, do tego z OpenSolarisem na pokładzie.

No i to by było na tyle. ;-)

but, most helpfully, is the 'open source definition', apparently created by Bruce Preens and Eric Raymond, that says “one should not only get the source code but also have the right to use it. If the latter is denied the license is categorized as a shared source license.”
oh dear, more technical terms.

personally, i'd describe it as software that's typically created in a community by sharing the code, and it's totally free to use and can be changed by you, or tom, or dick, or harry. or bob. and, there's no copyrights breached. but i'm sure i'll be corrected and told that that's rubbish.

erm. no.
there are 10 things you need to be open source, there's the complicated lawyer-speak version, but i'll just tell you them nice and simple, im sure can't cope with lawyer-speak.
1.give it away for free.
2.give away the code.
3.let people change it and give it away again.
4.let the original owner have the right to have the redistributions as “patches” rather than an edit of the original product.
5.everyone can have it.
6.even that man there in a suit with a multimillion pound business who wants to use it for his company.
7.the licensing applies to everyone.
8.the licensing cannot only be for the product.
9.cannot force other software to be used with it to be open source.
10.can be licensed simply using the software in any form, (not just clicking 'accept').

there are hundred's of different open source projects and they are easy to get invloved in, if you can't write code, then there is all sorts that you can do from writing FAQs to designing a logo, and if you can't donate any time, then go ahead and donate some of your money.
and if you can write code, then you probably don't need me to tell you that you can join the development groups and help to create better, faster, more helpful or even new programs.

so, who's the who's who in the open source who's who? (and can you say that three times fast?)
well, there isn't many “who's whos” because the community isn't exactly mainstream yet, but your main groups of interest should be...

mozilla

they bring you firefox, the internet browser and thunderbird, the email client. they have seamonkey, an all in one internet/email/html editor/IRC chat/web development “thing”(for want of a better word), can't say i've tried it yet, but perhaps that will be my next treat. and for those mac'ers among us (i wish i could be one, so bad) there is camino, the mac OS X-optimized internet browser.
they also have projects that use their technologies as a means of tracking bugs in your software, and monitoring developments.

i'll be honest; i learn something new about mozilla everytime i visit their site, and i'm sure i will continue to do so. i'm still learning when it comes to all this open-ness and co-operation! and it totally fascinates me.

open office

word? excel? powerpoint? publisher? access?
don't be so daft, it's expensive! you'll be wanting...
writer. calc. impress. base. math. and draw.
the excellent office suite that the clever boffins at openoffice have kindly created for us. be saved from microsoft office and it's stupid error messages and constant desire to 'ET phone home' (/tell microsoft about your every click and keystroke) and lack of compatibility with anything.
clever people. and if anyone is to overtake microsoft office, i think these could be the ones.

there is also an opensource alternative to windows, i know right! it's like, almost treason! woah. is it me or is it raining sky?. but i'll save that little nugget of free gold for another post. it takes more than a paragraph to explain the power ball of operating system that is linux.

so. there you have it.
and remember, open source is for life.
not just for free.

Aplikasi untuk membuat web, atau scripting lainnya. Beberapa kelebihanya antara lain:

• Mendukung berbagai macam highlight bahasa, PHP, Ruby, C/C++, HTML, CSS, Python, Java dan seterusnya, terserah apa yang ada dibenakmu :D
• Punya Code Folding, seingatku tidak banyak editor yang bisa menyediakan fitur semacam ini, kecuali editor sebangsa eclipse(yang berat itu)
• Line numbering, terakhir kali mencoba eclipse(kalau tidak salah masih versi 3.2.1, itu PDT sih), belum mampu mendukung dynamic line numbering bersamaan dengan dynamic word wrapping
• Mendukung project manajemen, jadi mudah meski banyak proyek berlainan tidak tumpang tindih
• Pluggable, menyediakan mekanisme fungsi tambahan lewat plugin, seperti plugin subversion (lewat KDE_SVN, sejujurnya saya juga belum eksplorasi lebih lewat Quanta, masih lebih suka lewat konsol biasa, lebih afdol :)

Minusnya, lumayan sering crash bila autocomplete-nya diaktifkan dan kode PHP+HTMLku cukup rumit :(

Yakuake

Konsole keren di KDE, katanya mirip terminal emulator di game Quake, seingatku tidak pernah ada panel atau terminal sebangsanya waktu aku main game itu, CMIIW.

Fungsi dan kemampuan tidak jauh beda dengan konsole(terminal milik KDE), bahkan settingan konsole bisa digunakan di Yakuake ini.
Selain itu, terminal ini tidak memakan tempat di taskbar, karena bisa bersembunyi ke bagian atas desktop, dan bisa dipanggil sewaktu-waktu lewat kombinasi shorcut keyboard pilihan kita.

XMMS

Whaa, ini dia, dunia tidak ramai kalau tidak ada aplikasi yang satu ini. Iya, iya..aku dengar itu, meski kuno aplikasi ini performa dengan kualitas suaranya paling bisa diandalkan di Linux.

Equalizernya berjalan baik, kecuali pada file-file ogg, equalizernya tidak berfungsi sama sekali, haa, aneh juga, entah kenapa bisa begitu :(.

Hal yang paling menarik adalah adanya plugin crossfade, telingaku sakit kalau tidak ada plugin yang satu ini, masuk perlahan dan selesai perlahan, halus di telinga, coba di player lain, click yang mengganggu itu yang ada :)

Pidgin

Media chat yang satu selalu aku pakai buat komunikasi antar temen jauh, bisa berbagai macam protokol dan mudah digunakan. Tapi sayang, tidak semua protokol didukung dengan maksimal.

Perambah, pilih yang mana ya, Firefox, Konqueror atau Seamonkey?

Secara umum ketiga-tiganya saling melengkapi. Firefox menarik karena dukungan bagi pengembangan web bisa dikatakan paling lengkap diantara perambah-perambah yang ada. Mulai dari theme, berbagai macam ekstensi, baik untuk menambah fungsionalitasnya seperti RSS reader, downloader, torrent, juga ekstensi pengembangan web, seperti LiveHTTPHeader, Firebug, Web Development, dan lain sebagainya. Hal yang sering saya banggakan dengan perambah satu ini adalah kemampuannya untuk menampilkan kode sumber HTML yang terhighlight dan dengan bantuan ekstensi terstentu saya bisa mendeteksi kesalahan HTML/CSS/Javascript dengan cepat.
Tapi ada masalah kecil yang terasa cukup menggangguku, Firefox selalu memakai bandwidthku secara diam-diam ketika aku terkoneksi ke internet, dengan netstat aku mendapatkan alamat ini 216.239.51.91(salah satu dari server google), entah update apa yang dilakukannya.

Konqueror lebih berdaya guna karena multifungsi, bisa sebagai perambah juga bisa sebagai pengelola berkas, penampil gambar secara internal, dan sebagainya, meski dalam waktu dekat perambah ini hanya akan dijagokan sebagai perambah saja, fungsi manajemen berkas akan digantikan oleh adiknya dolphin. Hal yang kurang saya senangi dengan perambah satu ini adalah lambatnya pemanggilan editor penampil teks bila saya ingin melihat kode sumber HTML yang sedang saya kerjakan.

Seamonkey, browser ini dulunya bernama netscape navigator, karena alasan terntentu akhirnya berubah nama menjadi seamonkey. Sebenarnya seamonkey sendiri adalah nama paket aplikasi yang terdiri dari browser, chat dan e-mail milik Mozilla Foundation, pemilik Firefox juga.
Perbedaannya dengan Firefox adalah, perambah ini terasa lebih cepat dari pada Firefox ketika memuat halaman web, tapi mungkin juga hal ini disebabkan karena Firefox yang saya gunakan lumayan penuh dengan plugin tambahan. Hal yang menyenangkan adalah perambah ini tidak melakukan pencurian bandwidth seperti apa yang Firefox lakukan.
Penampil kode sumbernya pun tidak jauh berbeda dengan Firefox. Tetapi dalam distribusi openSUSE yang saya gunakan, penampil teks milik seamonkey ini ternyata ada dalam paket rpm terpisah dari perambahnya, yaitu paket seamonkey-dom-inspector.

Sepertinya saya akan pilih ketiganya-tiganya :D.

GIMP

Ini dia pengganti Photosup. Secara umum fasilitas yang dibutuhkan untuk membuat atau memanipulasi gambar sudah lengkap, hanya saja mungkin antarmukanya yang terasa kurang intuitif. Tapi bukan berarti aplikasi ini tak layak pakai lho, buktinya beberapa templat web dan gambar yang aku buat hasil manipulasi aplikasi ini. Awal-awalnya memang agak terasa susah menggunakannya, tetapi lambat laun sudah bukan masalah lagi.
Yang paling penting dalam memakai GIMP adalah kemampuan menggambar(memanipulasi) yang baik, paham akan warna, tahu akan kenapa(selecting, cutting, layering, masking, dst), dan hasilnya tidak akan jauh dari harapan Anda.

Inkscape

Hmm, ini dia jagoan baru saya. Aplikasi ini sangat mudah digunakan untuk membuat gambar vector, tidak kalah dengan freehand(saya malah tidak begitu lancar pakai aplikasi satu itu, jarang pegang mungkin ya). Salah satu hasilnya adalah catto, kucing biru hasil contekan gambar di suatu majalah anime jepang (**iya maaf, saya belum paham benar bagaimana menggambar anatomi tubuh kucing dengan baik soalnya :( **)

Ya, mungkin itu aja ya, kalau Anda ada masukan silahkan saja :D
NB: Kalau Anda ingin mendapatkan aplikasi yang sama, Anda bisa mencoba mencari lewat rpm find atau pbone.

Výborný vypalovací program, který se na první pohled může zdát všelijaký, ve skutečnosti je ale velmi mocný. Nově v této verzi kromě spousty technických záležitostí je jakési menu pro začátečníky (které jde naštěstí vypnout). Také tu máme více jazykovou podporu.

Tentokrát po pilné práci vývojářů přichází zejména dvě změny:

I. Správa účtu - jádro nyní podporuje speciální druh protokolů, které dovolují vytvořit více účtů pod jednou DLL knihovnou. Momentálně je tak napsán pouze protokol Jabber, další snad budou přibývat.

Pokud máte staré účty vytvořené kopiemi jabber.dll, můžete přejít na nový model. Odstraňte tyto kopie a vytvořte účet, který bude mít stejný název, jako měla vaše stará dll knihovna. Například pokud jste měli jbr2.dll, měli byste vytvořit účet s názvem JBR2. V budoucnu bude tato procedura zjednodušena.

II. Počínaje tímto -tedy devátým - sestavením bude jádro Mirandy všechny pluginy bez UUID ignorovat. Před aktualizací si prověřte pluginy - všechny bez Unique ID v Možnosti -> Protokoly budou ztraceny. Pokud by pro vás byly takovéto pluginy nepostradatelné, počkejte do aktualizace stránky s addony.

Nové sestavení tedy používejte s krajní obezřetností a nezapomeňte zálohovat. Dále tu máme:

Opravy různých chyb.

Let's take a look at a picture of this tree, first.

At the beginning were dinosaurs.

The one pictured at the top of the tree is called Mozilla (it does look like a Zilla, heh).

• This branch of the family still has good relationships with ChatZilla, and is represented by the following members:

• Mozilla Suite, version 1.0 to 1.8 (earlier ancestors might even still work)
• Netscape Navigator, version 9.0b1 to 9.0.*

We do not know exactly how that happened nor who was the mother, but around 2004, Jan. 3rd, a man named R. Ginda gave birth to the first ChatZilla, which he - the Father- did not call "ChatZilla 1.000",  but "ChatZilla 0.954", because it (ChatZilla) was still small and unpolished.

Computers being a bit silly with commas and 1K or 2K numbers, ChatZilla was born to the World!, as 0.9.54. You can check how old ChatZilla currently is yourself.

We imagine that despite being in its infancy, ChatZilla was already awesome, and completely kewl, as it is now. Being a child prodigy, ChatZilla rapidly attracted a dense cloud of proud and talented Uncles, who devoted themselves to its development and sane building. The current list of these "godfather" uncles includes, but is not limited to, in alphabetical order:

• Gijs, from the Netherlands (not to be confused with Neverland)
• Silver, in the U.K. He also has stuff here. Silver is the master of Sugnim, who is the cutest bot on the ChatZilla IRC channel.
• ssieb_*, in Canada. Don't panic, Canada does exist.
• tH, in Jamaïca Kingston upon Hull, U.K.

These Uncles, since then, make ChatZilla able to run on a variety of platforms (which in this article, we'll call "branches" of the tree, even though sometimes, they are "trunks". Someday, we'll explain that. Let's concentrate for now):

• Mammals, mostly foxes: Mozilla Firefox, version 1.0 to 3.0. In that case, ChatZilla installs as an extension.
• Brine Shrimps, particularly Artemia Salina: SeaMonkey, version 1.0 to 2.0. ChatZilla comes with it (but is not a shrimp itself, obviously).
• Gregarious animals, coming in groups: Flock, version 0.4 to 1.0+. ChatZilla extends itself in these groups, too.

That's where you have to work a little and ask, dear Reader, a question: is.there.only.ChatZilla?

Thank you for asking. The answer is yes, and in that case, there.is.only.XUL.runner. ChatZilla is smart enough to run on its own, or standalone, on XULrunner.

And now, as in all fairly tales... we see a bright future for ChatZilla. We've heard of plans, we've seen tests on birds (Songbird). So... stay tuned!

I woke up at 2 a.m. today and couldn't sleep.  Raging horomones, side affect of blood pressure meds, a busy mind?  All of the above I'm sure.

Started working online on various projects from my self-imposed goals, otherwise known henceforth as, THE LIST.   It includes learning how to set up a web page for myself as cheaply as possible.  I  started researching my options by checking with my current email provider visi.com.  Yes, I can host my website for free through visi.  However, after trying to follow their online directions for writing code and using UNIX, I called the visi tech line and said, "HELP". 

The tech's suggestion was to use a software program for setting up web pages.   The programs writes the code in the background for me, and I just worry about the visual layout in the foreground using the tools the program provides.  I learned the terms wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) editor and open source.  I selected SeaMonkey to be run on Mozilla after a search of programs on the net.  After downloading the program to my computer, I decided to set aside the task of learning how to use SeaMonkey, and starting my web page for a while.  Just getting to this point on THE LIST took me several hours.  My eyes and brain are fried.  I'm letting them rest by enjoying a beautiful bouquet of fresh pink and orange roses in my room.

A neighbor dropped off the roses last night for me on behalf of our townhome association.  Yesterday morning I called the neighbor whose spouse was hauled away in an ambulence earlier this week for a heart attack.  She had just been released from the hospital and was now home recovering.  I figured I was probably the only one in the association aware of her situation because I happened to be home recovering from knee surgery, and observed the ambulence taking her away.    I decided to call a few of my other neighbors yesterday to let them know in case they wanted to send her a card or stop by.  When I talked to our former association president, she suggested picking up flowers on behalf of the assocation and getting reimbursed for my expenses.  I said I couldn't do that easily because of my knee surgery.  So she ended up dropping off the flowers for me last night.    I felt a little guilty that she had taken time to do this for me, because she was working when I spoke to her on the phone.  But the fresh flowers are beautiful, so I'm grateful.

Small acts of kindness, while unexpected, seem to occur exactly when they are most needed.

Adblock Plus

The first addon I’ve got in my list is called Adblock Plus. This is Mozilla Firefox Addons' most downloaded addon, and for good reason. Adblock Plus automatically removes all kinds of banners and adverts from webpages, instantly, using its built-in definition file. Since using it, I actually have forgotten what most ads look like – I get no banners, no Google ads, no flash ads, nothing!Adblock’s blocking process is completely customizable, with options also allow you to exclude certain websites form the ad blocking, allow certain ads and banners, or toggle off Adblock completely. These can come in very helpful, especially when a webpage relies on adverts to function correctly, such as text-based MMORPG recruiters.

Filterset.G

Filterset.G is actually an extension for Adblock Plus above, simply adding more advert and banner definitions for Adblock to, well, block. Updated every week, this is a must if you have Adblock Plus.

Advanced Dork

Advanced Dork is a simple, yet helpful addon. It adds Google’s Advanced Operations, such as “intitle:”, “inurl:” and “define:” to the context menu for easy access. Just highlight some text (e.g. Firefox), right-click, go to Advanced Dork\define: and a tab opens up doing a Google search for define:”Firefox”. Notice that it puts the keyword(s) in quotes to get an even better result. Very helpful!

Autohide

Another simple addon which is very helpful: Autohide allows you to completely customize the Fullscreen view. There are too many functions to list here, but they are all on/off toggles for pretty much everything you can see normally – status bar, menu bar, other toolbars, tab bars, windows task bar and more. What’s really helpful is when in fullscreen mode you can move the mouse cursor to the top or bottom, and the toolbars up the top and the windows task bar roll respectively come into view. Move the cursor away and the bar also hides again.

I find this extension especially helpful for playing games and reading articles, as it allows maximum view requiring in the least scrolling.

Backgroundimage Saver

Most websites don’t allow you to simply right-click the background and download it, as they are commonly hidden behind a transparent gif image, which (until this addon) stopped people downloading the background. This addon adds another option to the context menu: Save Background Image. Using this function you can bypass the transparent gif and access the juicy background behind.

Admittedly I haven’t made much use of this, as I haven’t needed to, but it’s an excellent addon and worth the install.

British Dictionary

These dictionaries are made by Mozilla, and are very simple what they say on the box: Dictionaries. It is actually one of my most-used addons, as if you spell a word incorrectly in a text box, be it on a forum, in a comment box or even when writing a blog, a red squiggly line underlines the word, much like it does on word processors such as Microsoft Word. If you right-click the word, options about how to correctly spell it come up – Click the correct spelling and it auto-corrects it. There is also a nice option to add the “misspelled” word to the dictionary if it is not a misspelling, but is simply a word not in the dictionary.

BugMeNot

BugMeNot is a website which allows visitors to bypass annoying registrations a lot of webpages require. For example, those websites which say you have to sign in to view the article. But why should you give them your email address and various other personal details? If you go to the BugMeNot website you can do a search for the website and, hopefully, use some registration information on their system. With the extension, all you need to do is right-click and chose the “Login with BugMeNot” option and, hey presto, you’ve been logged in!

Clipmarks

Clipmarks is by far one of my favourite websites, and because of that the Clipmarks addon is also one of my favourites. Clipmarks is a website which allows anyone to “clip” a section of a website and upload it to the Clipmarks website for everyone to view. Clipmarks has clips from all over the internet, including some of the most interesting news stories and incredibly photography I’ve ever discovered. With the Clipmarks extension you can add to the ever-expanding knowledge-base.

The addon adds a small icon to a toolbar, which, when clicked, puts the browser in a special clipping mode. Use the mouse to click the paragraphs, images and videos you want to clip, then click the Save button to post it on Clipmarks! It really is as easy as that. If you click the arrow next to the icon there are options such as viewing you clips, you profile, popular clips or a completely random clip.

In my opinion, a must-have extension.

Colorzilla

Colorzilla adds a small button to the bottom left of the status bar and, when clicked, turns the mouse into a colour eyedropper. You can then move it over to any part of the website and Colorzilla determines the colour so you can use it yourself. It displays the RGB values as well as the Hex and HSV values, and can be set to auto-copy. There is also the ability to zoom so you can get the exact colour. Its options allow you to change many things, including how the addon work and looks, what functions it has and if it should appear in the context menu.

Copy Plain Text

Another form of “What You See Is What You Get”. By selecting some text and right-clicking, you get the option to copy as plain text. In other words, you can copy it without all the extra formatting and fonts. This is very helpful, as you can probably imagine. Many times I’ve tried to copy a document into Microsoft Word, but when it pastes over it is covered in ugly, hard-to-remove formatting. This gets rid of it all, as well as adding extra options such as removing extra lines and spaces.

Ctrl Tab Preview

In Microsoft Windows, a Powertoy allows you to view a thumbnail of a screen as you Alt-Tab between them. This function has now come to Firefox in Ctrl Tab Preview. Normally in Firefox, ctrl-tabbing just changes the tab. With this addon, thumbnails of each tab appear allowing you to scroll through them quickly and easily, always getting the exact tab you want.

Customize Google

Customize Google is an addon you install, configure and leave, much like Adblock Plus. Simply put, it changes many of Google’s settings and automatically defaults them, meaning you don’t have to change them every time you cookies or cache are cleared. Not only that, but it adds a host of extra functions, which come in very helpful. Features include removing adverts, adding links to other web searches (e.g. Yahoo, Ask), allowing Google Suggest, showing favicons for webpages and auto-configuring the Advanced Search options. There are also options for all the other Google products, such as Image search, one of which options rewrites the link of the thumbnail to the direct link to the image, meaning you can click the thumbnail and go straight to the enlarged image, bypassing the website. On top of this, it adds security features.

This addon is definitely worth the download, I highly recommend it.

Download Manager Tweak

There is nothing wrong with the default Firefox download manager – Compared to the Internet Explorer one it is incredible. Yet, andman24 has made an addon to make it even better! It changes the appearance, allows it to be viewed in a tab or sidebar as well as the traditional window and adds a host of new features. A small, yet highly effective, addon.

Download Statusbar

Download Statusbar is actually one of Firefox’s oldest addons, yet it is still one of the best. From my experience, it works well with Download Manager Tweak (above).

Download Statusbar adds a new toolbar just above the standard status bar, which shows the status of current or recently finished downloads. This makes it a lot easier to view then having to constantly switch back and forth between tabs or windows, or have a sidebar open. Download Statusbar is highly customizable with its many options. Its appearance can be completely changed, as can its location. When a download finishes, the file stays on the bar for the user to do what they want with, such as open, view file location etc. What’s even better is that when there are no current downloads, or recently finished downloads, the status bar hides itself, not to be seen again until a new download is started.

FEBE

FEBE stands for Firefox Environment Backup Extension, and it does exactly what the name says: Backs up details about Firefox. This has been helpful to me countless times, when for some unknown reason my profile is reset. Luckily, FEBE automatically backs up my entire profile to a location of my choice every night at 9PM, meaning when I had to reinstall the profile (using a function built into FEBE) it was only a day old, and in that day I had made no changes anyway.

FEBE has a huge range of options. You can choose what to backup: Your entire profile (like I do), separate parts such as passwords, bookmarks, extensions, themes, cookies, preferences - Pretty much anything you can think of - Or a mixture of the various pre-mentioned parts. There are options including not backing up disabled extensions and verifying backups too.

When a backup is performed, FEBE stores the backed-up content in a directory of your choosing, in a folder with the option of timestamped folder names (my last backup folder was called "FEBE 2007 11-09 20.59.56". Backups can also be scheduled easily, allowing you to choose daily, weekly or monthly at any time you desire. FEBE also warns you if you haven't backed up data in a number of days, which can be changed in the options. The backup will not happen if Firefox is not open, however.

A must-have if you use Firefox a lot and have a lot of custom settings, passwords and extensions.

File Title

This is a simple addon which adds "Save As" to the context menu, so that you can save webpages similarly to how you can in Internet Explorer. I've used this a huge amount for downloading various pages - Before I had to open the page in Internet Explorer before saving it.

Firefox Showcase

I've only recently downloaded this addon, although I've already used it many times. It is actually very similar to Ctrl Tab Preview (above), as far as it shows previews when changing tabs. However, where Ctrl Tab Preview works when you ctrl-tab between tabs, Firefox Showcase adds a button to the toolbar which, when clicked, opens a window, tab or sidebar with thumbnails of all the tabs in their current state. Simply click the thumbnail to go to that tab instantly.

Firefox Showcase has far too many options to name here, but they include options allowing you to change thumbnail size, enable thumbnail caching, shortcuts, whether to update thumbnails and how do display the thumbnails.

FlagFox

FlagFox adds a flag to the status bar, telling you where the webpage you are currently viewing is coming from, with a flag to show the country, as well as the IP. Simple yet a nice addon to have.

FlashBlock

Being on dial up, one of the things that slowed down the loading of webpages significantly was flash objects. They automatically started loading, which considerably slows down the connection, and plays it when I'm not expecting or wanting it. Adblock removes all the spam flash objects, but what about flash games and movies that aren't spam?

FlashBlock gets past all of this by replacing the flash box with a "play flash" button. Until you click the button in the flash box, the flash object won't load. A nice feature of FlashBlock is you can also set exclusions on certain websites, so that flash always loads and is never blocked. For example, I have GoogleFight on my exclusion list so that I don't have to manually allow it to run every time I use it.

FlashGot

FlashGot is Mozilla Firefox Addons' second most popular download, and for good reason. FlashGot is a download helper, which completely changes downloading items with Firefox.

FlashGot allows the downloading of a selected link, all the links on a page, all the links in the selected text, or all the links in all the open tabs. There is also a function to build an image gallery, which, after putting in how images are stored on the website, opens a new tab with all these images, one after the other. Even better, FlashGot adds another option to the default Download Window, namely "FlashGot".

But what makes FlashGot so special? It's download manager support. I use Free Download Manager, and FlashGot is configured so that when a link is FlashGot'ed (by any of the aforementioned methods) it opens Free Download Manager. It then uses the New Download function of Free Download Manager to add all of the FlashGot'ed links to add the downloads to Free Download Manager, so they can be managed in the download manager.

When downloading, I nearly always use FlashGot so that I can use easily use Free Download Manager rather than Firefox's built-in download manager. FlashGot is also ideal for downloading mass media - For example, on a page with hundreds of videos which I wanted I used FlashGot to send them all to Free Download Manager).

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer

Foxmarks is a backup addon, similar to FEBE. However, Foxmarks only backs up your bookmarks, although it does it in a much safer and helpful way - It uploads your bookmarks to its own online server, meaning not only can you access them anywhere but if your whole computer is lost, including FEBE backups, you still have your all-important bookmarks. It can be set to auto-update for ultimate convenience.

And even better, it's a free service!

FoxyTunes

FoxyTunes uses a toolbar (which can be moved into the status bar) to display information of music you are currently playing in media players such as Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, MusicMatch, MediaMonkey, as well as online radio stations such as Pandora. It also adds the default song controls, play, pause, stop, next, previous, volume etc. It is also possible to search for album, artist and others using FoxyTunes' search menu.

There are also free downloadable skins for FoxyTunes, so you can make FoxyTunes match your Firefox themes.
If you listen to music often whilst using Firefox, FoxyTunes will be incredibly helpful for you.

Well, that’s the end of the first part of the article, I hope you liked it. I’ve actually spent a lot more time, and written a lot more, than I expected I would. As the old saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun! I’ve actually written nearly 3000 words and I’ve only covered 1/3 of my addon collection. I still have a large amount of addons to write about, and I do plan to finish my second part by next Saturday. I am probably only going to post main articles once a week, on Saturdays, so that my it doesn't distract me from schoolwork.

After I’ve finished this multi-part article, I will nearly certainly write more articles on Firefox extensions (when I get some more that is). As already stated, I plan to write an article on Thunderbird extensions as well, and I’m also planning on writing an article on Stylish Styles and Greasemonkey Scripts. After that, probably an article on speeding up Firefox, and another one on maximising viewable webpage space without detrimentally affecting its ease of use and availability. I'll probably then expand onto other internet PC applications, such as my download manager, RSS viewer, IM client and more. Anargo Sector Project

For those that don't know (where have you been the last few years?), Firefox is an internet browser, considered by many - myself included - to be the best internet browser available. Just to prove it's not too shabby, Firefox has won 10 awards from companies such as CNET, PC World and Forbes. It is made by Mozilla, who also develop Thunderbird (an email client), SeaMonkey (an all-in-one browser, email client, HTML editor and more) and some other, lesser-known programs. Firefox is freeware, and is updated often. The current Firefox version is 2, although 3 is a long way into development and is expected to be released relatively soon.

First, a little background on my experiences with Firefox. I’ve been using Firefox ever since I heard about it, a few years ago. I never liked Internet Explorer, but at the time there were not any alternatives that were much better, so I never bothered.

Then Firefox came along, which revolutionised my web browsing experience. Firefox was faster, easier to use, made use of tabs, was safer and I could get addons! I’ve always been a fan of customizing in all forms and sizes, from games to cars, and now I could also customize my web browser!

Over the years I predict that I have used well over a hundred addons, ranging from simple menu-changing mods to complete extensions to the program such as organisers. Many have come and gone, but I never stop looking for more. And the great thing is, even though my computer is well over a year old (with a terrible processor), Firefox loads very fast and runs perfectly smoothly. What more can I ask?

Currently I have over 60 extensions installed and running, but no doubt that number will just increase. This includes Stylish and Greasemonkey (more on these later), both of which allow me to use mini-addons, which aren’t included in the addon count but personalise my Firefox experience even more.

Before I start the article, a little disclaimer. I have dial up internet, running at 38kb/s, so I don’t use the high-bandwidth addons, or ones I don’t think are essential. For example, I don’t have the popular ForecastFox, which shows me the weather in my area. The reason for this? Not only does it steal precious bandwidth, but if I wanted to find out the weather I would go to the BBC website or turn on the TV. Similarly, I don’t use Cooliris, an addon which allows you to preview the website before going to it by having it load in a mini box. This loads at the same speed as the webpage itself, meaning it is very time-consuming on dial up internet. If I‘m interested in a link, I just go straight to the webpage itself. I could see this extension being useful to people on high-speed connections though. Although this I not because of my internet, I also do not use a Firefox RSS reader addon as many people do. Instead, I use an external program (RSSOwl), which I much prefer. Saying that, there are a good few RSS reader addons which many people do use.

All the addons I will post have all been tried and tested by myself, so you know they all work and are safe. I have the newest version of Firefox as of this time (2.0.0.9), and they are all compatible.

Seamonkey es uno excelente navegador de Internet, muy similar a Firefox (Ya que ambos son de Mozilla), viene integrado con un gestor de correos y noticias (Permite leer los mensajes de gmail y otros correos sin necesidad de abrir sus páginas), una libreta de direcciones (Como Outlook), una aplicación de Chat IRC y una aplicación para hacer páginas Web (Composer)

Trabaja con un sistema de pestañas como Firefox, pero mas atractivas y autoajustables...

Además es mucho mas rápido que Firefox (Increible XD), tiene un gestor de descargas, permite instalarle cientos de complementos (Como Ad Block que bloquea toda la publicidad), reconoce mejor las aplicaciones flash y es muy facil de manejar...

Este es el navegador que uso actualmente, y realmente se los recomiendo
