Ouch: After starlet Scarlett Johnasson, clearly crushing hard, gushed to Politico earlier this month about her lengthy email dialog with Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate felt obliged to set the record straight about his connection with ScarJo. What's their status? In A Relationship? It's Complicated? Actually, they are JUST FRIENDS OMG WTF, Obama told reporters on his plane:

Obama said the actress doesn't have his personal email address. "She sent one email to Reggie, who forwarded it to me," Obama said, referring to his 26-year-old personal assistant, Reggie Love. "I write saying, 'thank you Scarlett for doing what you do,' and suddenly we have this email relationship"
One day, a hot politician is happy to engage in "thoughtful... back-and-forth correspondence," and the next he's denying that it means anything at all. Johansson's heart is so breaking. Oh, sweetie, this little tactic is called "moving to the center," and all powerful men do it once they've gotten what they want from their "base." By the time the inauguration comes, you'll have turned your heartache into a gratuitously overproduced hit record and forgotten all about this sad little e-incident.

I think this RP is proof that I've gone off the deep end once and for all. I just finished reading Chuck Palahniuk's masterpiece Fight Club. I also just rewatched David Finscher's brilliant film adaptation of the novel. I also reread J.D. Salinger's The Catcher In The Rye, arguably the greatest novel ever written. Reading these master-works and then sitting down to write has made me feel wholly inadequete as an artist.

But it also planted the seeds for the heel turn that I talked about in my last blog post. The concept of sub-culture, destroyed youth, disposable culture and disenfranchisement are going to factor heavily into the new persona of Patrick McCarthy.

In my personal life, I've had a rough week for no real reason. I've had a lot of fits of paranoia, uncontrollable rage, frustration, and all kinds of pent of energy: violent, nervous, sexual, et cetera. It got me thinking not only about my own disenfranchisement but also about the tricks my mind plays on me and how that was the original impetus for the creation of Patrick McCarthy.

This caused me to create a new character in the life of Patrick McCarthy, as well as to resurrect one from his past. The new character is The Man With No Name named after the famous Clint Eastwood character from Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy (Fistful of Dollars, The Good The Bad And The Ugly, Pale Rider). I haven't completely decided what exactly I want to do with this character. I can't decided whether I want him to be a tangible entity or just an elaborate figment of McCarthy's imagination. I attempted this once before and bailed out on it, largely because I wasn't a good enough writer to pull it off. My current thought is that The Man WIth No Name is Patrick McCarthy's personal Tyler Durden. McCarthy has been talking more and more recently about his disenfranchisement with the world around him. The Man With No Name might end up being the catalyst to his heel turn.

The other character is Scarlett Willis. The end of the RP talks about Scarlett Willis sitting in a support group for single mothers in a church basement (ironically the church is Our Lady of Perpetual Hope). I haven't decided how to rectify the fact that The Man With No Name knows this about Scarlett without doing something that completely rips off Fight Club. If you have any thoughts, feel free to leave them in the comments.

I don't want to give anything away, but Scarlett Willis, as I have it planned now, plays a HUGE part in the future of Patrick McCarthy, so long as the original handler gives me her blessing to use the Sugar-Powered Princess.
