When it came to selecting which series would be number one on Cultural Learnings’ list of 10

When it came to selecting which series would be number one on Cultural Learnings' list of 10 Shows to (Hopefully) Watch in 2008, I had to make a decision that perhaps doesn't reflect my own personal taste. In terms of shows I'm most looking forward to watching, I can't possibly rank anything above Lost or Battlestar Galactica, two series I can't get enough of. However, last summer it became very clear that in covering TV it is important to not just use your own opinions to guide you, but also to recognize shows and fans who go above and beyond, and whose impact on television as a whole is sure to be one of the biggest stories of the year. As a result, here is the number one selection.

A year ago, I had written off Jericho. After losing interest shortly before the series went on hiatus in the fall, I was barely paying attention when the series returned in February only to struggle against tough competition. As its fanbase eroded, and as CBS left it off of its fall schedule, I was amongst those who rationalized its demise - it was never a strong demo performer, CBS can fill the slot with CSI Reruns and get better ratings, and the show never really set the world on fire anyways. And now, half a year later, I believe that Jericho is the most intriguing series to be airing in 2008.

The Nuts for Jericho campaign which emerged last summer was at first charming, and then interesting, and then mindblowing. It transitioned from a small-scale fan initiative to something that has changed the way viewers interact with networks. On one hand, I think that some fan groups have the wrong idea - it isn't that Jericho fans sent food that made them successful, so the recent Journeyman campaign featuring Rice-A-Roni isn't quite as effective. It was that the nuts which made their way to CBS headquarters were both intrinsically linked to the series and part of an outpouring of support which was spontaneous and powerful.

While there will be further fan campaigns, there will never be one as surprising and effective as the one to save this CBS drama - fans who had been discounted by the network turned out in large numbers and mobilized in record time. Whether the fans were posting on the CBS Message Boards or starting their own blogs (Such as Jericho Monster, Jericho Junction or Jericho on CBS), ordinary people from across America and across the world were uniting behind a show that they loved. The result was perhaps the greatest comeback story in the last decade of television, and a story that captivated the attention of bloggers everywhere, particularly here at Cultural Learnings.

But if 2007 was the year in which Jericho rose from the ashes, it is in 2008 that it must prove itself. While the show earned a shortened second season of seven episodes thanks to the efforts of fans, the series must rely on those fans to turn out when the show returns to CBS at 10pm on February 12th. While a fantastic story unfolded last year, it is now time to see whether midnight will strike before this Cinderella story can continue. Will Jericho's return be a final hurrah before the show leaves the airwaves for good, or will this comeback stretch on into 2009 and beyond? Well, it's kind of hard to tell at this point.

I've spent less time covering Jericho lately, and this is largely because there just hasn't been anything to cover. CBS has released a series of promos and they've attempted to launch some Alternate Reality games, but the problem is that their efforts lack the grassroots appeal that the original campaign had. There are still devoted fans willing to promote the series, but due to some internal conflict their collectivity was challenged towards the end of the year. It seems as if the lightning captured during that initial campaign has proved elusive since then, which is both unfortunate and untimely.

But, I've seen what these people are capable of - their resolve to bring their show back was far too strong for me to doubt that in the next 34 days they will be coming out of the woodwork in support of the series. Right now, the greatest obstacle is ignorance: some people don't know the show was resurrected, and certainly aren't aware that the show is returning so soon. Getting to these fans may prove difficult, but the experience gained last summer will certainly help dedicated fans make up for CBS' shortcomings in this arena.

To an extent, this is for the best: fans tend to be the ones who know how to sell the series for what it is, a drama about a town and its inhabitants in a crisis situation. Personally, I probably wish that they would have headed more in a science fiction direction with the series, but it is clear that the themes of family and togetherness have resonated with the show's fanbase. From my experience, it is these same qualities which has helped these fans grow closer together, and even in times of conflict there have been clear signs that a family of fans was born during this process.

And they might have found their entrance into the minds of television viewers, as the Writers' Strike has allowed Jericho to be emerging at a time when CBS will have little else on their schedule. By the time February 12th rolls around, CBS will be dipping into their corporate sibling Showtime for content, and a majority of their original programming will be gone. As a result, Jericho will be better able to capture the attention of the viewers it so desperately needs to survive.

However, I don't think this is a story about survival or desperation - even if the series debuts to disappointing ratings, it won't be enough to take away the real impact of this story. Whether the new episodes of Jericho garner ten million viewers or ten thousand, its return will signal a new era for television. In the creation of social networking sites like Hey! Nielsen, or in future campaigns and correspondence when a series is canceled, there is a new respect forming between the people who make television and the people that watch it.

But this obviously doesn't extent to the networks, or the producers - the continuing Writer's Strike is the reason for the (Hopefully) in the title of this event. Jericho fans, like so many others, have made it clear that it is not the studio heads who they thank for Jericho's return - it is the people who created the show, the writers who made it possible and the people who brought the series to life. While we will all enjoy Jericho's return in February, I also hope that it shall coincide with an end to this strike. Because, if not? Nuts to you, Producers.

Jericho returns to CBS at 10pm on February 12th, 2007 - Cultural Learnings will be covering the premiere, along with some reviews and thoughts on the last few episodes of Season One should we be able to find the time.

Bob Barker's final episode of The Price is Right was a classy affair that, despite being just another episode on the surface, felt representative of everything the show stood for. However, as we say goodbye to Bob Barker, it was hard to ignore the push that CBS is giving one of the shows it said goodbye to in May before reconsidering. That show is 'Jericho'.

The advertisement is everything that CBS should be doing to promote the show (It is also being placed at the end of some CBS Innertube viewings). Starting with various scenes from the end of the show's first season, it reminds viewers that only once in a long while is there a show that fans will fight to keep on the air. And that show is...Jericho.

The commercial goes on to inform viewers that the show will begin reruns on July 6th, and on the whole really makes the show out to be something that people should pay attention to. And let me tell you, the commercial is effective: it features the emotion of the show's characters and doesn't try to bog viewers down in the conspiracies seen throughout the show's first season.

Now, while the show wasn't peppered with the ads or anything, I think it shows that CBS is willing to spread the word about this series in what might well be one of the highest rated specials of the summer season (We'll get final ratings tomorrow). For now, fans of the series can finally believe that the network will be in their corner, and can hope for more coverage this evening during the Daytime Emmy Awards.

When CBS announced that it planned to air reruns of Jericho this summer in anticipation of the show's upcoming midseason return, I had personally thought that they would re-air all of the season's episodes starting at some point in June, perhaps doubling up on certain weeks in an attempt to fit in all 22 episodes before September came around. Well, CBS seems to think differently, and their official schedule features only 13 episodes from Jericho's first season. And, well, I think it's a good schedule.

The Jericho Summer Rerun Schedule

Friday July 6th

9pm EDT - Episode 1 - "Pilot"

Friday July 13th

8pm EDT - Jericho Recap Show (Eps. 1-11)

9pm EDT - Episode 12 - "The Day Before"

Friday July 20th - September

9pm EDT - Remaining Episodes of Jericho's First Season

Firstly, this schedule will currently take them until September 21st, which would mean the final repeat would air after the official start of the fall season. As a result, a two-hour event here or there might well take place.

After learning this news, I first felt it was a bit of a copout. However, I've since decided that it is strong plan that makes a lot of sense for a variety of reasons.

Emphasize Your Strongest Features

The pre-hiatus Jericho was a slow-moving, never-ending post nuclear society struggling with food shortages and your regular post-disaster scenarios. The interest parts (Hawkins' behaviour, the conspiracy rumblings) can be covered in the recap special, and the show can move into its strong post-hiatus period creatively.

Emphasize "New" Materials

These reruns are primarily designed in order to get those people the show lost during the hiatus back into the show. As a result, focusing on the episodes they missed thanks to American Idol and other factors is the best way to pull them back. Making them sit through what they had already seen would be one more barrier.

Emphasize the Timeslot

While Fridays might not be the easiest spot on the schedule, let's remember that one of the show's rumoured timselots for midseason has to be Moonlight's 9pm EDT slot, considering the development problems currently plaguing the vampire drama and the fact that it could be finished in time for Jericho to step in. If reruns work in this timeslot, Jericho might be able to find a home. If it had aired all episodes in two-hour bursts, the period wouldn't be tested as well.

So, while certainly airing the entire series might have been an option, I think that CBS has found the right way to handle the show's rerun schedule. We'll be watching the ratings for July 6th very carefully to see just how far the Save Jericho campaign was able to influence the viewing public. And, well, I might just be watching along with the Rangers to see what I missed out on.

Tłumaczenie
Czerwiec 6, 2007

Do Fanów Jericho:

Wow!

Nina Tassler
Prezes stacji CBS

P.S. Proszę przestańcie wysyłać nam orzeszki :)

In an official statement to fans of Jericho, Nina Tassler (President of CBS) has publicly announced the midseason order that has been rumoured for the past 24 hours. Here is that statement:

To the Fans of Jericho:

Wow!

Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard.

As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of “Jericho” for mid-season next year. In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more “Jericho,” we will need more viewers.

A loyal and passionate community has clearly formed around the show. But that community needs to grow. It needs to grow on the CBS Television Network, as well as on the many digital platforms where we make the show available.

We will count on you to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same grass-roots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent weeks.

At this time, I cannot tell you the specific date or time period that “Jericho” will return to our schedule. However, in the interim, we are working on several initiatives to help introduce the show to new audiences. This includes re-broadcasting “Jericho” on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips from these episodes across the CBS Audience Network (online), releasing the first season DVD on September 25 and continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return. We will let you know specifics when we have them so you can pass them on.

On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for expressing your support of “Jericho” in such an extraordinary manner. Your protest was creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone. You made a difference.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler
President, CBS Entertainment

P.S. Please stop sending us nuts :)

Whether or not fans despise her for her earlier decisions, this statement could not be more true. She, and rightly so, is calling on fans to make good on the promise that they set forward. And, in order to do this, fans need to find ways to turn this into ratings momentum. As a result, this campaign cannot die off now, and hopefully further good can come from this movement. The power of many cannot be refuted, in this instance, and in 8 months or do fans will have their chance to make their voices heard when Jericho returns to network television.

In preparation for this, you can send off an email as to why Jericho deserves Emmy Award recognition to cultural.learnings @ gmail.com, and it will be included in the growing database of comments from fans regarding the show's future.

Congratulations, folks. I shall eat some peanut butter in your honour.

For people who haven't been following this story, or perhaps want to revisit what Cultural Learnings has had to say in the past, I'd like to bring attention to a few past stories that still have some resonance considering today's news regarding the show's imminent midseason pickup.

For Your Consideration: Jericho and the Emmys - In Retrospect

Now, more than ever, this plan is the best step forward for this movement. With the priority now being building buzz around this show, garnering an Emmy nomination or two for the series is definitely the right tactic and something that everyone should be involved in. I'll likely be posting the initial FYC page for the series at some point over the next few days using the fan input I've received thus far (To send your own, email it to cultural.learnings @ gmail.com).

A Word of Warning to 'Save Jericho' - In Retrospect

This article, the 2nd I wrote on the subject, has proven to be just as relevant as it was when I posted it. At the time, my general tone was that a 2nd season would not be brought back without changes, and that this could mean the loss of some of the show's key elements. And, according to sources, this might just happen.

While CBS has contract options on most of the show's leads, the reduced order would also probably include a reduced budget and, in turn, a reduced regular cast. In addition, many of the show's writers have already migrated to other shows, including season one showrunner Carol Barbee, now serving in a similar capacity on another CBS midseason drama, "Swingtown.

These types of changes were to be expected. However, what effect will they really have? A smaller regular cast makes sense, but it also changes where producers may have been going with core storylines. This won't make too much difference, of course, when you consider that many of the producers might well have, like Barbee, headed off to different shows. It is going to be a balancing act, and Jericho fans need to hope for the best as to its outcome.

If Jericho is Renewed, What Timeslot is Best? - In Retrospect

Well, it appears it is going to be renewed and will arrive at some point in midseason (Could be earlier if another show bombs, but then it would need to go on hiatus during Christmas). So, where do we put it? Suggestions at the time seemed to be fairly certain that 9pm would be best, but there is no certainty as to what night would be preferable. This is one issue that won't be resolved for a while, but one that will be incredibly important for the show's future.

Yay! ... some encouraging news for Jericho fans! After receiving a flood of emails, phone calls and messages, and 50,000 (fifty THOUSAND!) pounds of peanuts delivered to the CBS New York offices, sources say that the network is reconsidering the May 16th decision to cancel Jericho, and that the show may return as a mid-season replacement.

From yahoo news:

Fans trumpeting the cause of CBS' canceled drama "Jericho" have caught the network's ear. CBS, deluged with calls, messages and shipments of nuts signifying viewer displeasure, is reconsidering its decision, a source close to the production said Tuesday. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly. A decision on whether to bring the show back, probably for a midseason run, is imminent, the source said.

And, from latimes.com:

Sometimes going a little nutty is a good thing.
For weeks, "Jericho" junkies have been firing e-mails (effectively shutting down InBoxes at CBS and this newspaper), signing petitions and sending bags of nuts to CBS headquarters in protest.
The assault seems to have worked, "Jericho" creator and executive producer Carol Barbee said Tuesday. CBS executives are in discussions with the show's producers and actors to resuscitate the show -- killed just last month -- for an eight-episode run in mid-season.

Even though these reports are encouraging, CBS still hasn't made an official announcement that Jericho will return. Fans should continue the fight!

From jericholives.com:

While we must steady ourselves to be gracious toward CBS, we must not falter in our resolve. Make the letters you send today and tomorrow sincerely express your hope that CBS will actually show us it cares in the very near future and let the network know, come the season 2 premiere not only will you be there – but that your going to be there to make sure the show stays for a very, very long time. The writers say they have arced out many seasons. If the current rumor is true and we’ve given them the opportunity to tell season 2, let’s make sure they have the opportunity to tell them all.

Multiple sources are telling me that CBS is this close to sealing a deal to bring Jericho back for at least eight episodes, possibly at mid-season.

My spies caution that this is in no way official, but it certainly sounds like it could be by day's end. It's now just a matter of signing the actors to new deals and, according to one insider, finding a new soundstage to house the show's sets.

To say this would be a huge victory for crazy TV fans everywhere would be the understatement of the frakkin' millennium.

Now, let's consider this for just a second. Personally, I think this is a fantastic win for the movement, a powerful statement of financial and programming commitment from a network willing to cast the show aside three weeks ago. And that, if anything, this moment could be a positive turning point for this movement from negative attacks to positive development. However, I'm not one of the Jericho rangers, and this is important. Why? Because, well...

It's not what Jericho fans wanted.

It's true: Jericho fans were adamant about getting a complete second season, believing that Jericho was entitled to it. And, while I see their point, this is FAR more than what most expected to see the show receive. I discussed last week about how a possible miniseries would be a great test period of the fans' support of the show; well, this would be an even better test, and be an even better opportunity to improve the show's chances of future seasons. In the span of those eight episodes, CBS will have all of their ratings analysis thingamajigs all out and ready to go. And, this time around, Jericho fans know what counts. They will know the show is returning. And they will know that this limited run means everything to the series. And CBS will be watching, closely, and this time I think the result will be quite different.

Already there are posts popping up on the Jericho Message Board about how only a full season will do, and I think that this is both counterintuitive and somewhat disingenuous. CBS is making a huge financial commitment if this report pans out (Which it pretty much has to, now, or else CBS will be torn down by pitchfork-wielding Jericho fans for ever toying with their emotions), and I don't think that this can just be tossed aside. Rather, all of that desire to gain a full second season should go towards gaining one. For real. Through supporting the show's run at midseason, no matter its length. This can be done through heading over to the "For Your Consideration: Jericho" post I started in order to perhaps contribute to getting the show some Emmy attention leading up to those episodes.

Right now, this is a campaign built initially on negative reaction, so it is understandable that there will be some residual frustrations. However, at this point, the switch needs to be made to a more positive perspective. Rather than fighting against someone, now fans need to realize that they're fighting for something, for Jericho. And that, in that fight, supporting your own cause is more important than attacking another at this stage of the game.

In the poker game that is life, CBS has raise a significant amount even if they haven't gone all in. Jericho fans right now can't fold their cards, just saying that they're disappointed in CBS' decision. Instead, raise that bet up a few notches and go out there and make sure that people know about Jericho. This is the chance that you should have been waiting for to show CBS that your cards, cards of determination and spirit, are not ones to be easily defeated. Go All-In not out of spite, but out of confidence in your show's ability. When that ability proves as powerful as I think it can be, CBS will have no choice but to fold their cards, and realize the show's potential.

But that is something I can't do. I can't make CBS do that. Only the fans can. So, don't see this as a setback. This is the exact thing this campaign needs to change its focus, and to develop a positive campaign that could save this show not just for midseason, but for the future as well.

Of course, it's still not official, but if it comes to fruition we're arriving at a new day of the Save Jericho campaign. And it is an exciting one.

An Emmy nomination is often a way for a series to gain credibility, and for a network to gain a certain level of prestige with that particular program. As a result, each studio sends out a deluge of "For Your Consideration" materials for the performers and series that they want to consider giving awards attention to. And, despite canceling the show, CBS is doing so for Jericho.

TheGreenCampaign.com - CBS Emmy Nominations

The above website presents full episodes from each show that CBS is entering for consideration, and amongst them is Jericho. With fans rallying behind the show, its mindshare is perhaps at its greatest level yet; whether this translates to more voters, however, we can't say for sure. However, I would suggest that the 'Save Jericho' movement has a real opportunity here. With the Emmy Awards comes a lot of press, and a lot of opportunities to prove CBS wrong. Sure, the Emmys are as much of a sham as the Nielsen ratings, but they're still a prime opportunity for fans of the series to show CBS that they made a terrible error. If, on July 19th, someone from Jericho makes it onto the Emmy nominations list, it will either show CBS they made a mistake, or perhaps even reaffirm their decision to renew the show.

So, my suggestion is that the 'Nuts for Jericho' campaign come together in an attempt to build support for the series and its stars on the internet. There are multiple ways this can be achieved:

1. YouTube Videos

I've been using YouTube videos for my daily series, so this is definitely the year when viral video can play a big role in the Emmy race. Start creating "For Your Consideration" videos for the series and its actors on YouTube. They can showcase your favourite scenes with that actor from throughout the season, or perhaps a single key scene. You can also create videos for the entire series as a whole, capturing key moments that might catch the eye of voters.

2. GoldDerby.com Forums

Warning: These forums are a serious place, and just like any forums they are not to be spammed or flooded. That is not going to do any good. However, GoldDerby.com Forums are the home of a lot of Emmy talk, and it is commonplace for members to put their own "For Your Consideration" mentions in the signature of their posts. This is a place where the message can continue to be spread in a subtle fashion, on a smaller scale.

3. Cultural Learnings' For Your Consideration Series

While I haven't watched enough of the show myself to write the piece, I'd be more than happy to post what you send me and collaborate it into a substantial For Your Consideration piece for the actors and actresses that made Jericho a show you loved. If you want to be a part of this project, and if there's enough interest, you can send the following information to cultural.learnings @ gmail.com:

Name: Myles

What You're Supporting: Lennie James [Hawkins]

Why You're Supporting it: Because...

It's an opportunity for all of the voices to come together in support of those individuals who made this series a fan favourite. After it is complete and compilated, I'll digg the story and perhaps it can get some people to notice the amount of fan support the series has received.

I've not always been entirely positive about Jericho, I'll admit it, but the dedication that fans have shown has been inspiring. With my For Your Consideration series, I want to be able to create something substantial that, in some ideal world, could make a difference. Giving fans of Jericho a chance to yell to the rooftops about the things that made their favourite show their favourite show seems like a chance to do just that.

I know that the Emmys are often as flawed as the Nielsens, and that this does benefit CBS (The "Enemy"), but what Jericho fans need to prove more than anything else is that the show CAN help CBS. That you, as fans, aren't out to destroy them but to make them more successful while heading in a better direction. That better direction can be cemented if more Emmy Voters notice Jericho and the people you think make it the best series on television.

And why would they be interested in getting a show like Jericho with a dedicated fan base and a high value? Cultural Learnings investigates.production

TNT

Why They Should be Interested: TNT showed a willingness to take on first-run programming earlier this development season when they made a pitch to NBC for Law & Order to move to the network. In the end, NBC chose to keep Law & Order, and kept Criminal Intent in the NBC family, so TNT was left out in the cold.

Concerns: TNT has already moved towards developing more drama series: Saving Grace (Starring Holly Hunter) and Heartland (Starring Treat Williams) both debut this summer, so their development slate is actually fairly full. Plus, for better or for worse, Jericho would be the network’s first foray into non-procedural television. Still, there’s no better place to start than with an already established series that could pull in numbers similar to a well-established syndicated series.

Showtime

Why They Should Be Interested: Showtime, like HBO, operates on a subscription basis: any show that can bring with a dedicated set of fans is something that they should be interested in. Plus, the cable channel was very interested in Arrested Development, which had even lower ratings (Although that show was perhaps the best comedy of the decade, and (with apologies) I don’t think Jericho has quite as much critical pedigree. Still, it’s a sure-fire way to boost subscriptions.

Concerns: Showtime, like TNT, has been developing a lot of their own shows recently. Weeds, for instance, has made a big splash for the network, and The L Word is buzzworthy. As a result, Jericho doesn’t seem to fit: even Arrested Development was closer to their core audience-base. As much as it’s about expanding that audience, Jericho doesn’t seem like a Showtime type of show. Of course, change can often be a good thing.

The CW

Why They Should Be Interested: They have the lightest development schedule of the major networks, and therefore are the most likely to be in need of a show at a certain point. Plus, since they’re in the CBS family, it’s an easy transition.

Concerns: I worry that the show would lost some of its edge in the transition: there’s a lot of demographic concerns at play on The CW that might not play in Jericho’s favour. It’s somewhat too graphic to be their official “family show”, and yet too adult-oriented to be a teen show…so it doesn’t really have a place on the network. Still, it would be better than nothing.

CBS

Why They Should Be Interested: They’ve yet to pick up any midseason replacements outside of saving Swingtown and The Amazing Race, and last year they had to burn off one of their replacements as early as November. They are in need of a midseason replacement. Plus, let’s face it, they owe it to fans of the show.

Concerns: Working with CBS creates a lot of expectations, but I think that the Rangers could step up to the challenge. The ratings bar needs to be a lot higher than on their other options, which would make for a more difficult path…but I think it’s one that could be conquered.

So who’s the best option? Well, I don’t really know. On one hand, staying with CBS brings stability…but it also brings the same expectations that brought the show down in the first place, and I don’t know if we can be so hopeful as to assume that CBS will entirely change their ways in the span of a single year. But, other networks can’t offer the same type of production values, and there doesn’t appear to be a single option that is as safe for the show.

Is there any option I’m forgetting? I’ve ruled out the rest of the major networks, considering how full their schedules already are, but perhaps there’s a cable station that I, as a Canadian, am unaware of to some degree (Showtime didn’t even let me in their site, I was hurt). Is there any place you’d like to see the show end up, or does it not matter in the end?

Regardless, Barbee is quick to point out that it’s all still a long shot, and that a show being resurrected rarely happens. But hey, I figure there’s no harm in checking out some hypothetical scenarios, eh?

Message From Pamela Reed

Dear Jericho Family,

Everyday I sit at my computer in total amazement. This huge response to the cancellation of Jericho is both humbling and inspiring; please accept my most heartfelt thanks. Also, know that my family and I applaud your determination and your style; you are one classy fan base!! I have been acting for 32 years and have never experienced such a reaction before, and I am right there with you. There are so many shows that, if gone wouldn’t be missed ( and I’ve done some of those too), but this was not one of those shows. Our show had rich production value and great writing, which included intelligent story lines and characters that evolved, surprised and had depth. And, in my humble opinion, the acting wasn’t too shabby either. Our creators expected the audience to keep up as they worked tirelessly to stay ahead; unlike some shows, our scripts were eagerly anticipated by the entire cast and crew. CBS got quite a bit of bang for their buck, and for the life of me, I cannot understand why we weren’t renewed. Our numbers are not all on the Nielson Box; most of my son’s friends watched it on their computers and unfortunately CBS doesn’t seem to understand that math sentence. Well, that is until all of you started to weigh in. Thank you for speaking out. Thank you for your dedication. Thank you for taking the high road. And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!! I’d like to bake each of you your favorite batch of cookies.

Sincerely, Pamela Reed aka Gail Green

Edit for July 24th

Pirate Master has officially walked the plank for good, as CBS has pulled the show from its lineup and will stream the remaining episodes online each Tuesday. For more info, head to Variety. Or, really, less info, it's not very informative.

So, Overnight Ratings are in, and Pirate Master was not embraced by viewers. At all. This highly advertised CBS Reality series was supposed to make a big splash, but it wasn't appointment television for viewers [You can read Cultural Learnings' full recap for more info]:

In series-premiere news, Survivor-clone Pirate Master on CBS did not fool the audience, with just 7.09 million viewers (#2) and a 2.4 rating/ 8 share among adults 18-49 (#2) from 8-9 p.m. Considering how tired the Survivor franchise is, what sense did it make introducing the same show with a different title this summer? Wouldn’t it have been better resting the format, and filling the hour with a game show? Bad move, CBS.

Now, there's multiple reasons this probably took place.

1. Competition

The show faced competition from Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grade? and the Scripps National Spelling Bee, along with repeats of My Name is Earl and 30 Rock. A special event, an established reality series, and some solid comedy reruns: that's a tough-ish draw for the summer.

2. The Jericho-fan led CBS Boycott

I'm not entirely convinced that the Jericho numbers are substantial enough to skew things at this stage, but CBS is certainly having some trouble launching what was supposed to be a sure-fire success. That's got to count for something, and is definitely a buoy for the campaign. Yes, that's right, a buoy. A Pirate Buoy.

3. The Mark Burnett Curse

Survivor might be surviving, but with The Apprentice gone and FOX's On the Lot falling fast, Mark Burnett has gone from reality-tv poster child to washed up failure. Well, not quite, but still: his days as Midas have ended.

4. People were all Pirated-out

With At World's End tearing up the Box Office over the past week, were people just already too mired in pirate-talk to really embrace such a series?

5. It was boring

While I think the premise has potential, the first episode definitely wasn't a fast-paced affair. It was more of a "Here's what could be interesting in the future", which would turn people away fairly quickly.

Will this signal an end to CBS' reality dirge? It is unlikely, considering they're likely to just develop more. Still, for new summer reality series, things are not looking good in the least.

Fans are sending peanuts. Fans are posting comments on blogs and message boards. Fans are making pho

Fans are sending peanuts. Fans are posting comments on blogs and message boards. Fans are making phone calls, sending post cards, bombarding Nina Tassler and Les Moonves with emails. But the question is: "Where does a movement go from here?" And, some people are offering answers, like Rich at Copywrite, Ink.

And, with no offense intended, I believe his answers to be unrealistic and unachievable for this movement. Right now this movement needs a Stage Two, and what Rich is offering is but an extension of this existing phase.

Rich suggests seven ways for fans to spread their base of support, all of which I feel somewhat miss the mark of what is actually going to make this campaign a success:

Solution One: Tighten Your Message. Everybody “diggs” the nuts campaign for its novelty. And it continues to generate buzz at various news bureaus. But what is sometimes missing are those clear, crisp speaking points about the show: tell people why this isn’t just another sci-fi serial with diehard fans (it’s not). Reinforce your doubts that Nielsen accurately captured the show’s ratings.

For the record, I believe that the campaign is already encompassing many of these ideas...but what he is suggesting here is watered-down talking points that don't actually delve into the depth of this discussion. Right now, I think the biggest problem with the message is that it is too unsubstantiated; there just isn't the evidence available, widely, to make those claims. The last thing that the 'Nuts for Jericho' campaign needs is to simplify that down even further. While it is true that the message about ratings and about Jericho's quality are important, they can't just be talking points.

Solution Two: Expand Your Base. When you think your Ranger growth is slowing, round up friends, family, and neighbors to your cause. Sure, they might never have seen Jericho, but they will support the show if you ask them: sign the petition, buy some nuts, or mail a pre-stamped pre-addressed postcard. This could tip the balance, keep it in the mainstream, and engage more people.

I don't think people are quite so eager to randomly start buying peanuts (especially not neighbours). However, the larger problem with this idea is that the campaign becomes all about size and not about its content. While size is important, inflation at the cost of people having no real connection to the campaign is something that, in the long-term, could lead to complications. If the campaign really needs to bond together on another issue to prove themselves, will these one-off supporters be there? I really don't think so. If you're going to engage them, show them the show and let them decide for themselves. Are we not above peer pressure?

Solution Three: Local Speakers. Several times throughout the campaign, Jericho Rangers have come close to missing in-person interviews with local broadcast companies, especially CBS affiliates. It would be advantageous to locate and identify speakers before you need them in mid-sized and major cities across America.

This isn't a bad idea, but execution could be difficult. Not only are spokespeople difficult to find, but I also kind of dislike the precedent of basically creating a script for these people (Going back to Solution 1, although as pointed out below I'm ignoring most PR logic.). I also worry, with no offense intended, that the most loyal fans may not make the best spokespeople. At times I believe that the campaign has been two one-sided, choosing blatant disregard for CBS as opposed to constructive criticism. One of the things that is so great about Jeffrey is that he's taken on the cause despite having not seen the show himself, and the result is someone who has the facts without perhaps the same blinding rage. If we can find 12 Jeffreys out there, then this idea holds merit.

Solution Four: Affiliate Buy-in. Probably because CBS affiliates are much closer to the fan base, they seem eager to report on the protest. I can only imagine, but part of the reason is associated with the local affiliates being able to sell the show. Besides, if they cover it, other non-affiliated stations might follow suit with their own spin. Local stations borrow stories all the time.

I honestly don't really understand the Buy-in part of this, but affiliates are a smart group to go to with complaints in general. They represent a key battleground for any campaign and for any group of people. The problem is that, often times, they're going to focus on the sideshow aspect of all of this (It's about Jericho fans going crazy with peanuts more than anything else). I worry that the complexities of this message will be lost in their coverage, and that they shouldn't be relied upon entirely.

Solution Five: Star Power. Sure, the fans have kicked around star power for some time, but they have yet to make it connect. The secret is to secure celebrities not affiliated with CBS or any other network. Designate a team (but don’t overwhelm them) to contact publicists who want their client on the front cover of Star Magazine saying “nuts to CBS” or simply something nice about Jericho actors, writers, or producers. The reward: 8-9 million moviegoers.

No. Absolutely not. This would be, perhaps, one of the worst ideas in the history of marketing, and I honestly do not understand where it's coming from. I know that Jericho is important to its fans, but there is absolutely no way that any celebrity in their right mind would be willing to become a part of this campaign (Unless there's a D-List celebrity who really likes the show kicking around somewhere. Kathy Griffin, where are you?). Rich is treating this like it's a political cause, but the reality is that it's a TV show: they're not taken seriously by most citizens, yet alone by celebrities. Unless Hollywood's obsession with famewhores has extended, I really don't see how this is a viable option.

Solution Six: Forget Rumors. If anything distracts this fan base the most, it must be the constant buzz of rumors. Just the other day, on Shaun O Mac’s online radio show, Stephen Scaia mentioned the Jericho set is still standing. Look, we all know the fans already secured a wrap-up so a working set only makes sense. Enjoy these rumors but stay focused until CBS says “yes, season two.” Then celebrate.

First, there has been no "securing" a wrap-up, as Tassler could easily go back on her word (Sad, but true). Second, I agree with this general principle: rumours are bad.

Solution Seven: Reporters Rock. Don’t get me wrong. The first rule in media relations is appreciating that the media is never your friend. They will report your missteps as quickly as your successes (it’s their job). With Jericho fans, however, there is a bit of a twist. You’ve won most of them over. So please, don’t dismiss or ditch them when a story doesn’t go your way. They’ll respect you for accepting a setback and be more willing to consider a follow-up.

See, this is something I can agree with on principle: reporters are a fine source for Jericho fans within this movement. And, yes, unsurprisingly, you don't want to piss them off in the process.

However, these last two ones are incredibly simple, and none of these solutions provide any sort of direction for the campaign. They are designed to homogenize the message at the sake of its complexity, or to slap a pretty celebrity face on the campaign at the price of their dignity and that of the campaign. This campaign right now does need to be more organized, and some of the suggestions offer good tips, but this isn't what Jericho fans need right now.

They need a Stage Two. They're sent their peanuts, spun their story: now they need something that is really going to make CBS stand up and notice. This grassroots campaign that is garnering a lot of press for being odd and interesting needs to be turned into something that can educate people, something that can start to bring people onto Jericho's side for good.

I don't know what that is, to be honest. But I don't think Rich does either. Unlike a political campaign that can exist purely with talking points and rhetoric, I believe that the 'Save Jericho' campaign is about something more fundamentally complex and quantitative. It can't operate under the same principles as grassroots political movements because it will never gain that level of national accreditation from media and individuals. As a result, it needs to find its own path, its own goals.

Over the next week, I think there will come a point where these new goals will need to be established. And while Rich's intentions and suggestions should certainly be kept in mind, I would warn against following them to the letter. 'Save Jericho' is not your normal case study, and treating it as such will only lead to problems.

The ‘Save Jericho’ campaign suffered a rather direct setback last evening, although not

The 'Save Jericho' campaign suffered a rather direct setback last evening, although not exactly a killing blow. The Wall Street Journal posted an interview with Les Moonves, CBS' President, where he effectively states that CBS could not financially continue with Jericho within a different type of business model.

Asked if CBS would consider producing the show and broadcasting the episodes online, Mr. Moonves responded he “would be losing a considerable amount of money.”

Now, there is nothing within this answer that fans didn't know. The reality is that online advertising has never reached a point where it could sustain a $2 Million per episode drama, especially because they would lose out considerably on international distribution deals and the like. The model just isn't there online, where everything goes through CBS and international rights are incredibly difficult to organize (Remember: fans in Canada and other international countries can't watch in the same way).

Moonves, however, represents the boss of the person being most targeted by the campaign, Nina Tassler. In other words, this is the most definitive statement we've seen that CBS is not willing to budge from their current position.

“We feel bad we have canceled the show,” Mr. Moonves said. “Obviously I love to see the passion. I wish we had seen some of that passion as the ratings were going down in the last two months.”

Now, while I know that there is some things to take issue with there, I begrudgingly have to say that he has a point: over those last two months, the show never faced off against American Idol (Except for Idol Gives Back, which was just unavoidably huge). If there was ever a time for it to regain some momentum, that was the time...and it didn't do it. So Moonves, clearly, has the numbers in front of him. His selection of the last two months certainly isn't as much of a ratings slides as he thinks it was, but he could have picked worse periods.

And yet, this statement doesn't jive with his underling's promise of closure where some of the mistakes with the show were admitted: instead, Moonves is fairly clearly offering the same reasoning that his colleague did before.

Which is why the campaign won't be stopping here. I've remained fairly pessimistic from the beginning, don't get me wrong, and I believe that the chances of a 2nd season are in fact slimmer now than they were 24 hours ago (When I speculated it could theoretically land a midseason slot). However, the campaign won't just be stopping as a result of Moonves' comments.

He offered fans no concrete ideas, and was presenting a very business-focused interview that addressed Jericho only in passing. I think that Jericho fans would have been angry with him for not mentioning Jericho, but doing so in such a basic and patronizing sense is definitely not helping his cause. BuhByeCBS at the Jericho Boards has posted a piece which shows just how much this interview with Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal could affect both his and Jericho's future.

You can head to the Wall Street Journal to watch the clip for yourself (I actually haven't been able to listen to it, I do not have a sound card at the moment), but I've decided that it looks boring. And instead bring you 30 Rock's representation of "Moonvest". I think he's be smart enough to listen to fans, don't you think?

While there has been no confirmation of its renewal for a second season, a little bit of hypothetical optimism never hurt anyone. I had trouble finding a timeslot for the show in my head that would avoid strong competition and yet not be a complete dead zone, so I figure there's no better people to refer to than the fans themselves. The following are the different options brought forward in that thread.

Wednesdays at 8pm

Pros: Kid Nation is likely to either end early or quickly, it's the same as the old timeslot, early enough for families to watch.

Cons: Too early for people in Central Time Zone, competition with American Idol in the Spring, early hour limits producers in discussing and portraying certain issues.

Tuesdays at 10pm

Pros: Cane could possibly be canceled in the timeslot (CBS struggled to establish new dramas in it this year), late hour allows people to watch it live after work, decent lead-in with The Unit.

Cons: Families couldn't watch it together, competition in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Boston Legal, Cane is perhaps CBS' strongest drama prospect.

Sundays at 8pm

Pros: Viva Laughlin will be a tough sell for the network, it has a 60 Minutes lead-in, early for families.

Cons: The slot isn't exactly big with young viewers, and it would be hard to crack into in the fall when NFL football airs on NBC. Also, it would have to deal with football overruns, which would make for wonky scheduling (A tough thing for a serial drama to overcome).

Fridays at 9pm

Pros: Moonlight could be axed early with poor performance, CBS is a consistent winner on Fridays with Ghost Whisperer and Numbers, established fanbase will follow show even onto a tough night, 9pm start time is a happy medium for families and other viewers.

Cons: Friday has limited viewership, and a 2nd season would struggle to gain much growth on the night when most are out and about.

There was some talk about Saturday Night (No new programming will air on Saturday Night for as long as we live, more than likely) and Monday (Comedy block is strong counter-programming) but I think the above four are the best options.

So, fans of Jericho, where do you think your show should be scheduled. Or, if you're not a fan, where do you think a serial drama could find a safe haven on the 2007/2008 Schedule?

It's now been two weeks since the glut of Network Upfronts coverage, and I guess you could say I'm a little nostalgic for it. Gone are the days when breaking television news hits every hour, which is really quite unfortunate. However, in recent days there's been some news about the one thing that networks are always unwilling to talk about: the midseason substitutes.

You see, each network knows that they're not going to actually be able to hold on to all of their fall dramas and comedies, but publicly they need to talk about how awesome they are and how they'll run for years and years and years! In reality, they're quietly organizing possible replacements that could be plugged in by January. While some networks have actually scheduled shows at midseason, there is still the possibility that new pilots or existing shows could be picked up. So, let's take a gander at all of these possible contenders to see where they might fight in should a space open up.

The Contenders

CBS

Swingtown

What is it: 70s-set drama about an apparently quiet suburb that, as new residents discover, is actually a swingin' sex haven.

Where will it go: It will be scheduled at 10pm somewhere, based on its subject matter. Chances are that it would be a good fit on Sundays, but we'll see how Shark does in the timeslot. Shark is a show that could easily be moved to fill in for a struggling drama, so it could give up its spot to the new show.

Chances of Midseason Placement: High. CBS is only saving the show until midseason so it can air uninterrupted through to May.

Jericho

What is it: Post-apocalyptic drama turned town survival drama that garnered a strong enough cult following to result in the Nuts for Jericho campaign of the past few weeks.

Where would it go: I really, really don't know. This is a tough one: technically, the spot guaranteed to open up (Wednesdays at 8 after Kid Nation ends) could work well, but it's also going to run right back up against American Idol. Meanwhile, there isn't a whole lot left in terms of timeslots. If CBS really wants to try to take its cult following with it, they could plug it in on Fridays and hope that people show up. Still, it wouldn't be easy.

Chances for Midseason Placement: The 'Save Jericho' movement is still fighting, and the campaign is gaining steam daily, but the deadline is two weeks before CBS loses the cast to other projects. That's a short amount of time to convince CBS to make a huge commitment, and a late fall miniseries might be the more likely option at this stage.

The Amazing Race

What is it: 11 teams of two travel around the world following clues, completing tasks, and competing with their fellow racers for a $1 Million cash prize.

Where will it go: Wednesdays at 8pm used to be the show's timeslot, but it's not exactly a safe haven for the show considering that American Idol will be populating it. CBS can take the risk and hope that Idol's recent ratings decline will continue, or it can find a safer spot for The Race. I think it might be interesting to see them move Survivor into a different timeslot, to see how it would perform, and provide TAR with its 8pm Thursday slot.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Like Swingtown, the show has officially been ordered, so it's just a matter of where and when for Phil and Co.

Babylon Fields

What is it: Zombie Dramedy starring Amber Tamblyn.

Where would it go: It could be a fit for Fridays at 9, should Moonlight fail (It's already recasting its female lead, not really a good sign), and could also find a home at 8pm on Wednesdays after Kid Nation finishes.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Unlikely, since the show wasn't officially picked up for the season. However, out of its remaining pilots, this one seemed to have the most potential and stranger things have theoretically happened. But don't count on it.

NBC

The IT Crowd

What is it: Adaptation of the British show of the same name about IT guys.

Where will it go: It's really a tough one to call. While on one hand the show would fit in with The Office and other shows in its Thursday comedy block, there's no room; Scrubs may have a shortened 18 episode order, but 5 hour long episodes of The Office will fill that in just fine. So, unless NBC starts a comedy block or develops a reality show that requires half hour results shows, the IT Crowd might be fighting it out for Late Spring slots fillind in for 30 Rock (The only comedy not extended or paired with one to be extended)

Chances of Midseason Placement: Guaranteed, really. There's been some retooling, but on the whole things look cozy for the comedy, and chances are it will find a home eventually.

Lipstick Jungle

What is it: Powerful women being powerful in New York.

Where will it go: NBC's Sunday schedule will be opening up wide due to Sunday Night Football departing, and Lipstick Jungle will fit in nicely at 10pm after Medium and Law & Order.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Already scheduled and everything.

ABC

Lost

What is it: Uh, you know what it is. It's ABC's hit Wednesday drama about a mysterious island and it's awesome.

Where will it go: Looking for an earlier timeslot, Lost might be slotting into the Wednesday at 9 timeslot it vacated previously, or it could find itself earlier at 8, or perhaps at 9 on another day. Either way, chances are ABC will keep it out of the 10pm timeslot it found this year.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Guaranteed.

Eli Stone

What is it: Young Lawyer starts hallucinating and finds himself switching from high-end scumbag clients to charity cases.

Where would it go: ABC has an entire night of new programming on Wednesdays, so any of that is up for grabs. Also, Fridays at 9 are a danger zone, with Women's Murder Club not exactly standing as an example of high-end programming.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Likely. The show stars Victor Garber, has a procedural legal base, and could be previewed after Grey's Anatomy while Big Shots takes a break.

Life on Mars

What is it: American version of BBC-hit about time-travelling detective produced by David E. Kelley.

Where would it go: The show could really slot in anywhere: its premise is strong enough that it could slot into a tough timeslot, and Kelley's pedigree could lift it. It wouldn't be a bad option for Tuesdays with Boston Legal, making for a Kelley block of sorts.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Looking better. After being held back for retooling from the fall upfront presentations, the series has found a director for its pilot: Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing). This gives the show yet more pedigree, and an even greater shot at making it onto the Spring schedule should the pilot come together over the coming months.

Cashmere Mafia

What is it: Three powerful women are powerful and female in New York. (It's the exact same as Lipstick Jungle)

Where will it go: It's too high-profile not to make the schedule, but it's got to stay away from its copycat show. I'd say it's a decent fill-in should Big Shots fail, and could also make a decent lead-out from Private Practice Wednesdays at 10 should Dirty Sexy Money fail to captivate viewers.

Chances of Midseason Placement: It will find a spot.

Miss/Guided

What is it: A Judy Greer (Arrested Development) led single-camera following an out-of-touch nerd who returns to her high school as a guidance counselor.

Where would it go: ABC has Cavemen and Carpoolers on their sitcom schedule, and neither of them look the least bit interesting. While Cavemen could theoretically be successful, Carpoolers seems like a totally incompatible lead-out. A spot should open up between the two of them that Miss/Guided could swoop into.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Good. ABC picked it up at the last minute (Seriously, almost the last minute), so chances are they aren't planning to squander it.

FOX

The Sarah Connor Chronicles

What is it: TV spinoff of the Sarah Connor story filling in gaps between, I believe, T3 and T3.

Where will it go: We know already, Sundays at 9. Which is ridiculous. Why destroy your smart counterprogramming animation block with a series that deserves a chance to gain a better audience. It can hope that it picks up on the Family Guy 18-49 numbers, so it's not all bad, but up against Desperate Housewives it will struggle to find a broader audience.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Guaranteed.

Canterbury's Law

What is it: Juliana Marguiles stars in this legal drama that is nothing at all like Philly. Or Judging Amy. Or any of those.

Where will it go: We know it for sure - Thursdays at 9pm. Which...ouch.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Guaranteed...but harsh facing off against such tough competition.

The Return of Jezebel James/The Rules of Engagement

What they are: Comedies: the prior about a woman getting her sister to be a surrogate from Amy Sherman-Palladino, and the latter a single-camera comedy from the Farelly brothers.

Where they will go: They'll be competing for the same timeslot, I think. Jezebel moves into the 8:30 Wednesdays slot in the Spring, but if it fails Rules of Engagement (without a timeslot) is likely to be slotted in.

Chances of Midseason Placement: They'll both find a spot, I reckon.

The CW

Crappy Reality Shows

What they are: Crowned, Search for the Next Pussycat Doll, Farmer Wants a Wife

Where will they go: I do not care.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Ugh, definite.

Veronica Mars: FBI

What it is: Spinoff of Veronica Mars featuring a focus on her time in FBI Academy.

Where would it go: It could slot back into its 9pm Tuesday slot should Reaper fail.

Chances of Midseason Placement: Very unlikely. Not only was it not officially announced at the upfronts, but no word has been heard since. I believe all hope is gone for Veronica and Co., especially since One Tree Hill is guaranteed to be a midseason drama for the network.

16 maja 2007 roku, stacja CBS postanowiła zawiesić dalszą realizację serialu Jericho. Jednak fani serialu nie próżnują. Od razu pojawiły się petycje przeciwko temu posunięciu, oraz inne akcje.

Obecnie, wpisując "Save Jericho" w YouTube otrzymamy 42 różne filmy nawiązujące do akcji.

W ostatnim odcinku serialu, gdy Jericho dostaje możliwość poddania się, Jake Green wypowiada jedno, jedyne słowo do 'najeźdźców'. Brzmi ono "NUTS".

- shipped 89 lbs on 5/17
- shipped 24 lbs on 5/18
- shipped 1393 lbs on 5/21
- shipped 4042 lbs on 5/22
(inc. 4000 lbs of pooled order)
- yet to ship: 1963 lbs

lbs jest skrótem od słowa funt. Podając, za Wikipedią 1 lb = 0,453592 kg co oznacza, że do siedziby CBS dotychczas dotarło ponad 2000 kilogramów fistaszków! A oto film z akcji.
