Like you may have noticed, the 28°C/85°F temperatures didn't exactly incite me to post during the past week. With a violent thunderstorm ending the fun tonight, I will share a day of unashamed pampering in the sun with you all. And pampering was definitely on the menu, over at Kouros (do check out their website in English), Antwerp's most exclusive male-only 'sauna and leisure club'. Kouros is a refreshing breath of fresh air compared with the (often rightfully earned) sleazy reputation of "male-only saunas". This particular place not only oozes with class but manages to provide its services as if they all came out of a well-prepared package deal: dining along the outside pool, a wine label of their own, top quality service and infrastructure in what used to be a classic green suburbia mansion.

I talked for hours to some amazingly interesting people (many were not local, several spoke a multitude of languages) until the first drops of rain hit the outside hot-tub, not really a problem since we were all wet anyway. Diner was equally superb, turning the day into a real experience. If you're even in the neighborhood, this place is worth checking out. Being gay is not a requirement, being male is ;-)

Today was one of those days that seemed like there's just not enough hours in the day to get everything done that I wished to accomplish.  I've been juggling a lot of time-sensitive projects at work, and then had a lunch date with a couple of ladies of the press.  We met up at Tina's in Dundee and had a lovely lunch.  It is invaluable to develop relationships and get to know friends of the media - local, national, syndiated or not.

I signed up for a Scandinavian-style sauna-steam for this Saturday morning at Loyly, which I intend to write about for my next blog post on theantitourist.com.  I'm psyched to check this minimalist Euro styled spa.

After work, I spent my evening doing some yoga and abs strength training.  Due to my recent health issues, I've been committed to trying to get back into practicing yoga and meditation.  I would like to attend yoga classes, but I really need to get my finances in order. 

I'm spending money on different things for my writing - blog upgrades, writing contests (yup, most require $10-$15 fees to enter work), etc.  I would like to attend a few summer workshops, as well, either at Sitka Center for Arts & Ecology or Fishtrap.  I have limited funds for that, too.  With the gas prices soaring, it makes it even difficult to figure in when I can sign up for a tour and occassional daily usage of a writing room at Writer's Dojo in Portland - it's about a 30-40 minute drive from  my home.

I decided to set up advertising on my blog - it's another way to make money.  I am aggressively looking into other means of marketing my blog and getting it out to more readers.  I've even added the subscribe button - keep scrolling!  It's after the Archives...after the Blogroll, Recent Comments, and Stats - and yup, there it is!

I learned on ABC's Nightline last night that a stay-at-home mom, who's blog Dooce is a huge success, makes a good deal of money from advertisers.  I'm slowly dipping into this opportunity.  Sidenote - I love this blog.  I think it's funny, honest - and not limited to mommies.  As a single woman I appreciate and enjoy Dooce blogger Heather Armstrong's candid posts.

After working on these opportunities I tuned in to what's going on in the world.  For one, I am happy that Hillary took West Virginia, but I am disappointed in our nation's women, the leading gender in our population, for denying this incredible opportunity.  Statistics show that single women support HIllary - it's the married women who are backing Obama.  I find that to be really, really weird.

What is making me even more sick right now is the devastation in the Far East.  As if Myanmar's cyclone wasn't bad enough, followed by a ridiculous government that would rather see its people suffer than allow global aid - because, God forbid that would show their people how kind, generous and effective the rest of the world is.  The leadership there wants to keep its people ignorant of that kind of aid. 

And then there's China.  I don't even know what to say about that earthquake.  The 7.9 scale is unimaginable!  I have decided to emulate the Tibetan Buddhists and pray for peace and the end of suffering.  It is my hope that lives will continue to be saved, that medical care, food and water will be available, that shelter will be available and that rebuilding will soon take place.  I will meditate on this and pray.  I hope the global response for aid will reach the Chinese people as soon as possible.

In February, with the coming of the Chinese New Year, the year of the rat, I remember reading an article about the possibility for natural disasters.  I remember thinking about Katrina, the Tsunami in the East (Dec. 04), and I just couldn't imagine any more distruction.  But, the prediction for disaster was beyond ominous:

The start of the new lunar year, the most important national holiday for China’s 1.3 billion people, followed three weeks of ice and snow storms that crippled transport and power supplies in many cities.

But even though power has been restored to 162 or the 170 worst-hit counties, millions are still without electricity or heating and the China Meteorological Administration warned that the warmer temperatures and melting snow could bring natural disasters, including landslides, in their wake.

And fortune-tellers say that caution will be the watchword for the Year of the Rat, for which they predict financial and political rumblings, tsunamis and epidemics. The reason, they say, is that water and earth – two of the five elements Chinese mystics believe are at the root of all things – are in conflict in 2008.

Aigner joined the cult in 1976, after leaving his family's German farm to take up employment as a bus driver in Munich. Aigner became a committed Scientologist, devoting himself to crossing Scientology's disingenuously-named Bridge to Total Freedom, which Brown described as "a very expensive process, currently believed to cost US$360,000" that leads not to Total Freedom "but to Total Disillusionment, as several OT8s have stated in no uncertain terms."

In order to be able to devote more funds to traversing the Bridge, Aigner returned to the family farm in 1995 and began working as an independent bus driver. Aigner's family reported changes in Konrad. Normally cheerful and easy-going, Konrad was said to have become tense, nervous and preoccupied. In 1996, Aigner tried to leave Scientology but ended up sticking around. In 1997, Konrad told his mother that he wanted out, claiming that "he had learned something so terrible that it would kill her to hear about it". That August, after three months in a coma, Aigner was dead.

Brown writes:

No-one seems to doubt that it was his involvement with Scientology which, directly or indirectly, led to his premature death, and it may be significant that vitamins were found among his possessions after his death. Konrad died of multiple organ failure - his heart, lungs and stomach had all stopped working. The autopsy report notes that their condition was abnormal for a man of his age. No answer to this mysterious collapse has so far been found. However several things point to a notorious and dangerous Scientology practice known as the Purification Rundown or Purif. It involves overdosing on vitamins and spending many hours for several consecutive days, in a very hot sauna. Prolonged exposure to abnormally high body temperatures causes soft tissue damage and death. Consequently multiple organ failure is a feature of severe or repeated heat exhaustion. An individual can survive a single episode if given the proper emergency treatment but he remains vulnerable to even a modest rise in body temperature for an unknown period. If Konrad had been forced to prolong his 'purif' or repeat it too often, it could produce exactly the symptoms which killed him. It is in fact difficult to think of any other possible explanation. He was already sweating and shaking before he left for Munich, which suggests that damage had already been done. As in other Scientology deaths we can point to the cult's negligence, arrogance, irresponsibility and a lack of the normal care due to one human being from another.

The Cult of Scientology's impact on Aigner's family continued even after Konrad's passing.

This simple bachelor who lived at home, worked hard, lived frugally, never went on holiday, left huge debts. His brother Bernard calculated that during the last few months of his life Konrad had paid the cult 70,000 marks and estimated that his total payments over the years were at least 600,000 marks. Not only his own savings but those of his family had been given to Scientology. To repay his loans his brothers and sisters had to sell their land. The only thing they managed to save was their parents' house, and a useless e-meter for which their brother had paid 8,000 marks. 'We cannot bring Konrad back to life, but maybe he can serve as a warning to others.'

So there I was, wondering after the fate of, of all people, Hugh O'Brian , whose trail, I assumed, had seen him gallop from Wyatt Earp to Wyatt AARP long since. His name resides in an occasionally-dusted wing of my halls of memory whose other members, willy-nilly, crowd the screen on the same back channel: Robert Culp, Doug McClure, Fess Parker, James Franciscus, Lee Majors, George Maharis...I think back to the sort of tanned, open-shirted hairy-chests-with-sideburns one used to see among the celebrity couples on the late Bert Convy's marginally less tacky answer to The Newlywed Game, Tattletales. Vague memories of seeing O'Brian as a regular guest, decades ago, at the Playboy Mansion had me wondering how long the playboy in O'Brian held out.

Quite a while, as I see, providing moral support for all those bachelors determined to hold out until they have themselves put in enough years of "research" to ghost a shelf of dissertations; return with us now to those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear, June 26, 2006, as -

Thanks to a link from Bathhouse Addict ("NSFW", as the kids say, which I assume means, Not So Fast, Willie!; Googlery will take you everywhere; say, who dropped the soap?), to a spread from 1950 in Modern Screen, "Stag Night at the Steam Room", I learn with no small ration of ethnic pride that Hugh O'Brian was, within a full cohort of rising Truman-era beefcake, an early adopter of the ancient and noble tradition of the Finnish sauna, my people's answer to the tribal sweat lodge of the AmerIndigenes, and hellfiring forge of all-round hardihood.

Time to splash some more water on the hot Rocks, eh, Mr. Hudson?

Hugh O'Brien, Scott Brady, John Bromfield, Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis sit on hot shelves of various tempertures at the Finlandia Baths.

Se estrenaron con su proyecto "Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning" y, tras el éxito de la película con más de 8 millones de descargas, vuelven al ataque con dos nuevas producciones "Iron Sky", con un presupuesto actual de 2,5 millones de euros, y "Sauna, Wash Your Sins".

"Iron Sky" nos traslada a 1.945 cuando, en pleno desmoronamiento del Tercer Reich, un grupo de nazis logran alcanzar y colonizar la luna desde una base secreta en la Antártida. Allí permanecerán ocultos hasta que, ya en el año 2.018, deciden volver a la Tierra y conquistarla.

"Iron Sky" se encuentra en una fase más avanzada de producción que "Sauna..." (que se engloba dentro del género de terror) y, aunque aun no hay fechas oficiales de lanzamiento, ya hay un trailer bastante simpático de lo que será la película.

La idea del proyecto Wreck a Movie Oy Ltd. nace en Tampere, Finlandia, de la mano de Timo Vuorensola y se basa en la idea de que cualquiera con interés y buenas ideas puede realizar un proyecto audiovisual de calidad y con posibilidades comerciales. A través del portal del proyecto cualquiera puede plantear una idea o unirse a un proyecto en marcha y participar en el proceso de creación de una película, vídeo musical, cortometrajes, etc. sin necesidad de ser un profesional del medio.

También se puede participar en los proyectos colaborando en la producción o financiación de las películas. En este momento se ha comenzado a vender 2.000 "bonos de guerra" para la financiación de "Iron Sky". Se trata de un pack de coleccionista que se enviará en agosto de este año y en el que se incluye diverso material promocional como un "cómo se hizo", el trailer y un certificado de haber colaborado en el rodaje de la película. Su precio es de 50 €.

Además también se puede comprar diversos artículos de merchandise como camisetas, gorras, llaveros, etc. para participar en la producción.

Als ich mal wieder umzog, kaufte ich ein Haus, in dessen Garten sich ein alter zerfallener Luftschutzbunker aus dem 2ten Weltkrieg befand. Er diente der Ansammlung alter Blumentöpfe und verrosteter Gartenutensilien, und Biologen hätten hier ihre Freude am Studium des Brutverhaltens von Spinnen und allerlei Insekten gehabt. Ich sah es jedoch gleich virtuell: hier wollte ich richtig schwitzen, hier werde ich ein Sauna hineinbauen. Mein erstes Heimwerkerprojekt im neuen Domizil war formuliert, und wurde 2 Jahre später auch verwirklicht.

Es gibt 2 Arten eine Sauna zu bauen: entweder sie beauftragen einen spezialisierten Schreiner oder Inneninstallateur und nehmen nach einigen Wochen das fertige Produkt in einer ersten Visite ab. Vergessen sie nicht einen Haufen ehrlich verdientem Geld an den Handwerker zu überweisen, ehrlich von ihm und ihnen verdient. Oder sie gehen online ins Internet und lesen und suchen alles, was es zum Thema Sauna und Sauna Eigenbau gibt und legen, nachdem sie das Meiste verstanden haben, selber los.

Soll es wirklich schön werden sollen und das Projekt 2 Ziele hat, nämlich (a) Spaß am Heimwerken und (b) Spaß an einer individuellen hochwertigen Sauna, gebe ich hier gerne ein paar Tipps. Sollte ihr Lebenscredo jedoch das Motto „Geiz ist geil“ sein, hören sie auf zu lesen, gehen sie nicht über Los, gehen direkt zu OBI, Hornbach, Praktiker & Co. und kaufen sich so einen Kasten von der Stange und schmeißen ihn zuhause in die Ecke ihres Keller. Wackelt dann zwar alles ein bisschen und sieht aus wie eine optimale Verwertung des Weihnachtsbaumholzes vom letzten Jahr, aber es ist garantiert zum kotzen geizig geil.

Wenn sie aber ihren nackten Allerwertesten auf edles knotenfreies Holz setzen wollen, kaufen sie sich am besten alle Sauna-Zutaten, die ihre nackte Haut berühren könnten, beim Sauna-Fachhandel. Das ist vor allem das Holz für die Sitzbankauflagen sowie für die Innenverkleidung. Zuschneiden und Zusammenbauen dürfen sie selber, aber sparen sie nicht am falschen Ende. So ist z.B. eine gute elektrische Winkelkreissaege, wie z.B. die Bosch Kapp- und Gehrungssäge GCM 10, einer einfach-verrosteten Handsäge vorzuziehen. Sie und ihre Gäste werden den Unterschied mit bloßem Auge erkennen.

Nachdem sie alles Holz, das ihre nackte Haut berühren könnte beim Fachhandel gekauft haben, dürfen sie nun endlich ihrem Heimwerkertrieb folgen und zu OBI, Hornbach, Praktiker & Co. gehen. Hier dürfen sie all das Holz zu kaufen, das sie nie mehr sehen werden, also die Streben an der Wand zur Aufnahme des Dämmmaterials und der Innenbeplankung, oder dem Holz für den unteren Rahmenbau der Sitzbänke. Kaufen sie hier auch gleich: schöne Kacheln und Kachelkleber für den Boden, sowie viele Schrauben, Nägel und Dübel um alles ganz ganz festzuschrauben. Und ihren 10ten Satz überflüssiger Schraubenzieher, ja, ich kenne den Trieb.

Was sie vom Saunafachhandel noch brauchen ist ein guter Saunaofen, dessen Leistung abhaengig ist von der Groesse ihrer geplanten Sauna, sowie der Schalteinheit mit Timer für diesen Ofen. Warnung: da ein Saunaofen eine ganze Menge Energie in Form von Strom aus dem Netz zieht, kann ich hier nur empfehlen, einen zugelassenen Elektroinstallateur die Anschlüsse machen zu lassen. Denn „Geizig-geil“ und „Mause-tot“ liegen hier nah beieinander.

Ansonsten wagen sie sich ran, denn alles was nun kommt ist einfach nur gute Heimwerkerkunst. Viel Spaß beim Ausbau ihres Luftschutzbunker.
