Selesai cerita burung, sekarang ke tulisan saya sendiri sbb.

Sebetulnya topik tentang 'Programer Ruby Standar Luar Negri' adalah topik super membosankan buat saya pribadi, tapi jujur saya jauh lebih capek lagi kalo ditanya-tanya kayak begini kalau ada pas ketemu saya, ya ya ya, silakan mau bilang saya kurang sabar itu hak masing masing orang lah.

Kenapa bosan, karena hal ini adalah hal yang biasa kalau biasa ngikuti berita atau up-to-date aja, lewat blog-blog, lewat milis, intinya kalau mau terbang berkelebat juga ya terbanglah, jangan baring sambil minta disuapi. Orang sudah kemana, dimana baru melek bangun tidur. Lagi lagi ya terserahlah mo bilang kasar kek apa kek saya kalo ngomong emang gini apa adanya aja. Ini juga pas di Indonesia bisa bilang barusan, kalau di luar negri rupanya hal-hal basa-basi punten, nyuwun sewu, ungguh inggih ternyata memang sama sekali tidak dipakai dan memang ternyata standar respek itu beda emang sih kulturnya. open minded aja gitu bahasa gampangnya.

Ni posting blog kali ini buat inti sari kan apa-apa yang saya ingat, cateet tu yang saya ingat doang, bukan yang berdasarkan lapangan nyata, kalo lapangan nyata silakan refer ke situs asli langsung biasanya yang selalu di update ya kayak www.workingwithrails.com, ada lagi jobs.rubynow.com, tapi emang yang paling mantap tu referal sih. Urusan kerjaan mah biasanya dasar emang rejeki yah kalo saya bilang, bahasa quran aja binatang melata aja dijamin rejekinya, saya ngomong gini sih nggak agamis agamis amat, tapi ya emang dasar yakin aja gitu lho kalo dasar rejeki biar jauh datang, kalau bukan rejeki biar sudah di mulut bahkan di perut, muntah.

Proyek Ruby on Rails biasanya yang standar ya :

• biasa kuat OOP ruby nya,
• biasa dengan XP (baca bukan windows xp, tapi itu extreme programming), jadi biasa dengan test unit ataupun rspec,
• biasa inggris tertulis dan bicara (blah kalo yang satu ini mah emang saya gagu yah gak bahasa mana aja juga kalo saya emang keknya emang gini dah masi belajar ngomong euy! geblek)
• biasa kuat web programming nya (artinya biasa tu mainan kayak servis macem2x, yaml, xml, boro-boro cuma csv, text, dst gitu gitu doang lah)
• biasa menterjemahkan bahasa dari bahasa kolega kerja bisnis ke bahasa model entitas kemudian dari sana biasa menterjemahkan lagi ke bahasa komputer / pake ruby, mulai dari user stories ataupun visualisasi, rspec, dan coding.
• biasa dengan manajemen proyek, seperti whatever works, maksudnya seperti Get Things Done, bukan yang neko neko banyak cerita tapi gak jadi jadi (ayee ada lumayan tu kerucuk kerucuk keriuk keriuk kecoak Indonesia emang jagonya kalo coding copy paste punya orang lalu tepuk dada ngakuin bikinan sendiri dah tak de malu tu babi jer), ada macam-macam, ada yang ngandelin UML, ada yang ngandelin BDD, ada yang ngandelin SCRUM, intinya menyamakan bahasa, iya mas, kayak suami istri, saling percaya, uh uh, seiya kata, ah mas, jadi mesra yah.. iyah.. si akang teh romantis bawa oleh-oleh dari paris... (biar bersajak doang sih ujungnya pake 'is')
• biasa dengan memperhatikan sampai detail untuk urusan teknis, dan biasa menjelaskan dengan bahasa yang umum dan mudah dipahami bila berbicara kepada rekan kerja yang bukan IT.
• biasa dengan versioning system, seperti svn atau git.
• biasa dengan mengerjakan proyek proyek ruby sampai tuntas tas tas taaaaaaaas. Sekedar tips, kalau buat yang seperti saya mungkin kan sudah ada banyak proyek proyek buat bikin resume saya melorot, nah buat yang belum, terutama yang sehari-harinya masih didera berdarah-darah dgn bahasa-bahasa lain, caranya kalau nggak ada blueprint atau masterpiece, bikin mockup, ambil aja contoh proyek yang sudah ada tapi sebetulnya perlu diimprove, maka improve lah, bikin sendiri, dan hargailah sendiri karya sendiri :p yang menghargai diri kita itu sesungguhnya ya diri kita sendiri. jadi bayaran berapa tu ya sesuai dengan apa yang kita bisa. kalau di indonesia berharap gaji setinggi-tingginya tanpa kerja sama sekali alias ongkang-ongkang babi maka di luar negri kalau perusahaannya dapat yang bagus ya nggak bakal dapet, kecuali kalau dapat perusahaan ecek-ecek biar kata di Amerika juga ada tu yang brengsek, jadi musti pintar-pintar pilih employer.
• biasa membuat rubygem.
• biasa membuat ruby libraries ataupun plugin.
• biasa terlibat aktif di komunitas, seperti mailing list / milis, seperti forum, blog, wiki, social networking site seperti github.com (hei itu github itu sama aja friendsternya programmer luar negri, ngomong-ngomong soal friendster itu pun juga cuma indonesia yang termasuk pasar besar yang mau sedekah sama tim friendster, kalau di luar orang banyak pakai myspace dan facebook).
• biasa dengan relasi database, menggunakan MySQL, Oracle ataupun Postgres. lebih diutamakan kalau bisa tuning. bisa ngertiin dalem-dalemnya lagi / tawaran bayarannya kalo kantornya bagus pasti tambah mahal cring cring cring ;))
• biasa dengan sistem operasi sesuai kerjaan, mis. linux, apa mac os x, free bsd, dst

ya standar gitu gitu doang, adapun selebihnya itu tergantung project, misalkan sebagian contohnya gini ya:

• punya visa / mudah masuk negara yang tempat berurusan kerjaan tsb.
• menguasai flex dan rails
• harus menguasai python, java dan ruby dengan programming utama ruby. (kalo yang ini dijamin langka yang bisa, dan sudah tentu bayarannya juga langka punya pret)
• kalau di negara tertentu ada yang strict, misalkan hanya menerima yang mempunyai PR (permanen residen) saja.
• menguasai matematika, fisika dengan baik, contoh kalo masuk google biasa ditanyain/pas diinterview ditanya algoritma, matematik yg .... gitu deh.
• menguasai proyek proyek open source ruby tertentu, mis. active merchant untuk ecommerce project, radiant untuk cms, hpricot dan scrubyit, biasa dengan libraries keluarga Net, seperti Net::HTTP dst.
• menguasai bahasa asing tambahan. Jadi ini penting untuk kedekatan saja sebetulnya, mis. kalau di Singapura, kalo bisa Mandarin ya bagus. Saya bilang tidak harus lho. Mis. di Kanada yang daerah juga ada prancis, ya bisa prancis bagus.
• Mengerti/memahami perbedaan budaya. Maksud saya begini, kalau di Indonesia kebanyakan pekewuh, puntenlah, maaflah, yang sebenarnya itu semua buang-buang waktu! coba fikir itu maaf untuk apa? introspeksilah sendiri, maafnya untuk bicara? ya itu karena budaya penjajahan di Indonesia yang sangat mengeras membudaya mengakar sampai anak cucu jadinya gitu, kalau gaul sama orang Amerika sama Eropa, ya niscaya kebiasaan itu hilang dengan sendirinya, walau jujur kalo saya pribadi saya pikir saya masih berwatak Indonesia ketika di luar negri, tapi kalau dibanding yang di dalam negeri ketika di Indonesia tentu saya sudah tidak seperti orang Indonesia asli lagi. Mereka yang asli cenderung ucap maaf berjuta kali, sampai bosan saya dengar itu maaf, karena kalau pun minta saya jawab, pasti saya akan jawab tidak ada maaf bagimu haha. Maaf adalah kata kata mahal, yang tidak berarti ampun. Ucapkan bila ada kesalahan, saya telah melakukan kesalahan, saya akan memperbaikinya bla bla bla dan tidak akan mengulangi lagi atau ini tidak akan terjadi lagi. selesai sudah :) Maklum saya, budaya bicara di Indonesia masih belum biasa, kalaupun saya dukung bicara biasanya yang keluar agresif, padahal budaya bicara tidaklah berarti agresif.

Ya intinya kurang lebih menyesuaikan dengan kebutuhan ya, bahasa simpelnya fuck your marketing bullshit, improve your product. Jadi maksudnya, nggak usah sok tonjol-tonjol dada ini lho kami bla bla bla gini gitu gini gitu, kalo saya sih gak mau refot, gampang ajah, kalo cuma ngomong sih anak TK juga bisa / atau kalo cuma mau bikin sensasi ah si tukang akrobat yang koplok + kurang kerjaan trus ngesms media-media juga bisa, kalau ada produknya ya tinggal saya lirik toh, kalau ada source codes berikut strategi suksesnya tinggal bisa dilirik, ya memang lirik-lirik aja saya, di luar-luar kan saya juga orang pada taunya kalo arie super selektif. Sampai bisa dapat rekomendasi dari saya tu sulit, tapi sulit bukan berarti mustahil! Patokan saya gampang, saya cuma bilang aja apa adanya, spec requirement yang dibutuhkan dari yang punya-punya duit itu sudah jelas, tinggal SDMnya siap apa tidak menyambut tantangan tersebut, misalkan bisanya apa aja, saya sebut aja gitu semua, kelemahannya apa aja, saya sebut juga semua itu tanpa ada yang saya tutup-tutupin, biar sama-sama enak. Ya memang untuk yang biasa jadi teman dekat saya pasti sudah mafhum dan tau banget untuk ndekati saya ya sulit :)) pendekatannya pasti beda. Kalau saya liat di kantor kantor di Jakarta mungkin ada yang coba mendekati timnya dengan sogokan makanan lah minuman lah, sama saya langsung saya bilang omong kosong semua, boro-boro dikasih, ditraktir aja terang-terangan saya tolak. Ada lagi dengan cara merangkul, tapi PHB, kalo main todong tumpek blek lempar map item gede biar dibayar berapa juga sama saya bakal mentul 1000% ! Dan saya gak peduli dan gak liat tu orang mau kaya milyuner kek apa kek, yang saya lihat, nilai dan anggap bukan disana. Yang saya nilai adalah teamwork, adakah teamwork, koordinasi yang baik, budaya memanusiakan, budaya kebebasan bicara, kredibilitas yang solid, innovative, penuh inisiatif. Itulah yang sering saya lihat. Ya kalau kita ngobrol soal begini mungkin kalo ketemu sama yang suka ngobrolin ini nanti bisa lama sampai berendam-berendam di hotel langganan :)) gampangannya udah pada sakau kali. Jadi posting kali ini saya sudahi saja ya.

Oh iya, Penasaran bayaran rubyist itu berapa? Hm, kalau itu sih udah dibahas di blog ini, search aja archives nya bentar paling dah ketemu :p wong googling aja juga pasti ketemu (damn i hate to use that saying rtfm doesn't help much/hell yeah I wish I could change ALL of this blog post with one simple word = RTFM!)..

Simpelnya: telinga saya sakit aja.

Orang Indonesia sukanya kalau bicara dicampur-campur ya. Saya ngomong gini aja kayaknya kalo pasang cermin jangan-jangan saya sendiri juga gitu, alasannya tapi kalo saya mungkin beda, karena saya terbatas bahasa asingnya, jadi kalau nyerah saya pakai bahasa bisu, bahasa hutan, bahasa isyarat atau mencari-cari kata-kata lain untuk menjelaskan apa yang saya maksud ketika bicara dengan orang asing di negeri orang asing. -_- dasar nasiib jadi traveler!

Kalau dicampur-campur dengan catatan karena memang punya banyak bahasa tersebut ya oke lah. Misalkan saya ada kenal seseorang, sebut aja namanya Peterpan (iya seperti biasanya, nama di blog ini sering saya samarkan demi menjaga privacy ybs selain saya pribadi juga belum minta ijin ke ybs untuk saya blog tentang dirinya), dia biasa di Amerika, biasa di Singapura, biasa di Jepang, kalau dia bicara sama saya campur-campur bahasa inggris, indonesia, jepang, segala macam ya wajar saya bilang, dia toh berhadapan dengan yang sama juga mengerti dia bicara begitu, dia juga ngerti bisa menempatkan diri kalau ke orang lain yang nggak biasa, ya itu selain inggris biasanya nggak keluar. Seperti biasa, padi makin berisi biasanya merunduk. Sama seperti air yang tenang, biasanya dalam. Kalo udah dasarnya dalam, trus airnya juga sampe tumpah-tumpah nah dasar tu orang balelol talkative ada aja bahan ceritanya belom kehabisan energi aja keknya tuh (hiyat kabur lagi gw satu kalimat terakhir ngOOT)

Kalau saya senangnya ya kalau dasar niatnya inggris, ya sudahlah, cakap aja inggris terus. Kalau indonesia, ya sudahlah Indonesia aja. Malah dicampur-campur kalau niatnya buat sok-sokan malah di depan saya justru makin melihat ketumpulan prematur yang bicara itu. Sudah begitu, logat salah-salah, grammar salah-salah. Mending jujur aja sekalian, kalau baru belajar ya bilang belajar, jadi salah-salah ya maklum, biar dibenerin belajar bareng. Ngomong-ngomong nih saya jadi inget ada satu daerah di Kalimantan Timur yaa pelosoook gitu deh haha walau orang disana pasti nggak akan terima dirinya dan daerahnya disebut pelosok, biasalah ini urusan beda standar aja, sama mereka langsung juga terang-terangan nggak bakal ngomong langsung gitu kali saya, mereka tu ada guru inggris ya anak sekolahan SD gitu, bilang "does" itu bacanya "DOES", iya di baca "do-es" bukan "dAs" apa "dAz" apa "dez", dan itu ditereakkan di kelas, "coba ulangi anak-anak, DO-ES!! DO-ES!! DO-ES!!" Bah kacau!! =))

ada lagi, kalau ini dulu pas saya sekolah SD dulu, wah parah tu gurunya, saya bantah habis-habisan dia balik marahin saya waktu itu, masih anak kecil lah, masih ini itulah, gara-garanya cuma nyebut "duck", dibacanya "DUCCCCKEK" gitu ya kek gitu diulang-ulang bo' ayo anak-anak ducccckek duccccckek nah saya diem aja waktu itu. Jadi ingat ada teman seorang dosen Bahasa Inggris di suatu Universitas yah, dia emang biasa ke luar negri juga, trus kalo sama anak-anaknya ibu nya tuh biasa kalo ngomong sehari-hari di rumah ya pake inggris, wah pas ada guru salah-salah, trus di raport dikasih lima, tu habis-habisan didatangin sama ibu dosen, mati tuh guru baru kena batunya! beribu-ribu ampun tiada ampun tu sama temen dosen itu =)) [ini juga cerita nyata, nama asli gak saya sebut, kalo mo kenalan pas ketemu saya boleh ntar saya ajakin ketemu trus ngobrol2x]

Tapi memang saya khawatirnya kalau melihat media-media sih gejalanya Indonesia ini dikondisikan biar bodoh Inggrisnya ya, kalau bicara inggris itu sengaja sepertinya budaya dikesankan supaya gaya-gaya, sok-sokan, atau dilucu-lucukan, buat saya sebetulnya malah gak ada yang lucu, malah terhadap orang tua saya sendiri saya bilang begitu, karena ibu saya sebetulnya sejak bulan kapan gitu emang lagi belajar inggris, nah dosennya suami dia sendiri =)) yang galak, malah anaknya, nggak usah teori macam-macam dah praktek aja, ngomongin aja langsung inggris, kok repot, harus itu, wong cuma inggris aja sudah ngeluh-ngeluh gimana kalau nanti punya menantu pakai rusia atau prancis....

Coba liat di MTV Indonesia, saya lihat sekilas aja sih pas lagi makan di warung biasa di Indonesia, wah "Hello Guys kawula muda, kita sekarang ada di bla bla so we're really having fun guys"

Ya memang kalau saya di luar negri cuma senyum, ada rasa kangen indonesia sedikit terobati melihat kelakuan Indonesia dari luar, tapi kalau lagi di dalam Indonesia melihat gitu jadi eneg. Ya sakit telinga tadi. Nanti saya mau cari iPod atau apa kek portable radio biar gak usah shits macam tu.

Budaya yang saya perhatikan lagi begini, bukan cuma Indonesia nih, tapi biasanya tipikal untuk negara-negara yang berdekatan, yaitu kurang bisa me welcome untuk pendatang yang padahal mereka orang baik-baik. Misalkan seperti Jepang dengan Korea. Konflik mulu. capek. Sebut 'konnichiwa' ke Korea, disebut insult/hinaan buat Korea.. Atau seperti teman ada Belgia, dia biasa di rumah punya empat bahasa dari lahir 'Belanda, Prancis, Italia, Inggris' dia bilang "No German!", cocok pas di bagian belgia satu lagi "No Dutch!". Nah lo! Kalo yang dekat-dekat, contohnya ya kayak Indonesia sama Malaysia, aduh... gara-gara dekat kok malah bukannya mesra kok berantem. Indonesia kasih asap. Malaysia maling lagu Indonesia. Saya pas di Kuala Lumpur bilang aja kalo pas lagu rasa sayang itu sama banyak lagi harta-harta indonesia tu di Indonesia wataknya emang pemalas ya, termasuk malas menjaga yang dipunyai sendiri, jadi kalo mo ambil pada ambil aja gih, biar mereka yang tidur pada bangun! puwas puwas!

Coba kayak komunitas Ruby gitu ya, dimana-mana selalu mesra, Indonesia ama Malaysia ama Singapura bahkan ama Inggris sekalipun dooh mesranya :)) Kondisi orang perang tu capek, daripada perang, enakan damai, sayang-sayangan....

Nah tadi barusan itu luar negri. Contoh lain lagi kayak Finlandia yang diserang Rusia sampai tiga kali, tapi dasar gak ada trauma traumanya ya sama komunis :)) Kalau dalam negri contohnya ya sifat kedaerahan apa sih chauvinisme yah? jadi misalkan seperti di Bandung tu kata teman saya nggak ada nama jalan Gajah Mada karena ada sejarahnya kata dia, kata dia prabu siliwangi apa gitu sama kerajaan jawa apa kek saya nggak begitu ngeh, trus pokoknya ujung ceritanya bunuh-bunuhan gitu, trus putri Sunda memilih mati bunuh diri. Jadi trauma gitu. Serem ah.

Saya cuman introspeksi kalaupun mau pecah ini Indonesia toh bergabung saja tidak bisa berdiri sendiri, pilihlah minta dijajah saja sekalian. Dalam hati saya teriris seperti ada luka diberi cuka sambil tersenyum pahit, ah sukses benar dulu penjajahan di Indonesia sedemikian lama sampai mempengaruhi watak orang Indonesia sampai keturunan-keturunan sekarang. Ini belum saya ngomong kalau urusan KTP segala macam, harus daerah anu, harus daerah ini, padahal sama-sama satu propinsi aja masalah, heran saya... kalau saya di luar negri saya dengan bangga tepuk dada dan mengucap saya orang Indonesia, dan kemudian saya dengan bangga cerita budaya yang dimiliki Indonesia, kekayaan negara Indonesia, tapi kalau saya dalam Indonesia setelah pulang... begini rupanya sambutannya. Yang sedikit ini cuma seujung kelingking dari banyak hal yang welcome saya tentunya. Di banyak kesempatan saya tentu juga sering lihat dan bertemu dengan yang welcome, biasanya mereka yang punya wawasan lebih baik yang biasa me welcome itu.

Kembali lagi ke introspeksi bahasa parah tadi, saya pikir, dan juga dulu pernah guru bahasa prancis dan inggris di suatu SMU di INdonesia pikir, bilang ke saya gini, bahasa Indonesia itu bahasa kedua orang Indonesia, bahasa pertama orang Indonesia, biasanya bahasa regional alias bahasa daerah. Jadi bahasa ibu saja bahasa daerah. Kalau bahasa Indonesia sudah jadi bahasa kedua. Berarti bahasa asing lain jadi bahasa setelah kedua, ketiga, keempat dan seterusnya.

Ada seorang hacker bilang, coba kita kayak Malaysia aja dijajah sama Inggris, biar pada pintar ngomong British. Ya tapi kalau saya bilang sih enakan nggak usah dijajah aja kayak Thailand. Kalau saya bilang, enakan kesadaran sendiri aja untuk bangkit, nggak usah dibakar bakar dulu baru bangun. Masak minta dijajah dulu baru mau punya kesadaran untuk pintar?

Oh iya, ngobrol-ngobrol tentang malaysia, kalau di Indonesia saya sering sekali ditanya, di malaysia tu gimana, dulu pas lagi rame-ramenya Indonesia versus Malaysia gimana, ya saya jawab, yang rame tu cuma di Indonesia, di Malaysia mah aman-aman aja. Sayanya kali yang nggak tau apa-apa. Toh saya juga disana bukan kantor Malaysia punya dan juga pergaulan kebanyakan bukan dengan Melayu tapi malah dengan Bule. Lagipula kalau di kota seperti Kuala Lumpur itu yang banyak justru orang Cina, ini telinga dimana-mana kita pasti bakal sering dengar orang ngomong mandarin, di Indonesia nggak usah ribet pake tanya tu mandarin jenis apa kanton, atau apa atau apa deh, kalo nggak bisa mandarin walau keturunan cina di Indonesia ya udah latihan belajar aja sana bahasa mandarin gak usah ribet, orang tadinya cerita bahasa Chinese di Kuala Lumpur kan.. terus disana juga banyak orang ngomong pake India, dan juga Inggris. Jadi tiga itu yang sering didenger sama telinga. Beda kalo sama Indonesia, sebanyak-banyaknya orang Cina ataupun keturunan cina di INdonesia, yang sering konotasinya dimusuhi, heran juga saya, saya ini pribumi tapi saya kurang suka kalau ada istilah dibedakan begitu, kalau bisa janganlah disama ratakan bila menilai orang, orang tu beda-beda, nggak usah menilai ras atau suku tertentu jahat, ya diri sendiri aja kalo introspeksi baik atau jahat nggak, gitu aja, ini parah kalau sampai sudah sistem trus birokrasi yang mempersulit sengaja bikin sulit-sulit buat yang baik-baik, kalo buat yang beneran jahat sih gpp, walah ini posting blog kemana-mana, wong tadinya dari sakit telinga, sampai jadi gini :))

Jadi kalau kita bicara gitu, ya intinya bisa menempatkan diri aja, kalau emang yang biasa dihadapi sama-sama biasa di luar, ya santai.. seperti biasanya, terus deh :)) ya kalau misalkan saya berhadapan dengan yang murni cuma bisa bahasa daerah sama bahasa Indonesia, misalkan ibu saya sendiri, ya saya berusaha keras pakai bahasa indonesia walau saya jadi terbata-bata karena terpaksa sampai menerjemahkan 'fashion' menjadi 'gaya baju, pakaian' dst. Mustinya yang di Indonesia, diciptakan budaya bangga Indonesia itu sendiri, ini malah kebalikannya, anak-anak muda malah rambutnya dicet jadi bule lah, kalo saya malah jauh lebih bangga rambut saya hitam asli asia tapi otak bersaing bule. Nggak usah pake banyak gaya segala macam -_-

This book is meant for PHP developers who are interested in adding Rails to their toolsets. There are a lot of books on Rails now, but PHP developers have a unique way of thinking about problems that are built around the PHP mind-set. This book aims to guide your learning in Rails based on your existing knowledge of programming in PHP.

Function Reference

This function reference covers commonly used PHP libraries to their closest Ruby equivalents. The reference is structured very closely against the PHP reference library.

1.  Install ruby

To install ruby (1.8.6) and rubygems, simply type:

sudo apt-get install ruby-full rubygems build-essential

2.  Update gem

When installing rails, make sure that you let gems manage it rather than apt-get, otherwise, "gem and apt-get will start fighting like Spock and Captain Kirk in Amok Time."  Thus, we need to make sure rubygems is updated using the command sudo gem update (for gems 0.9.4)

Now, you might or might not encounter this but when I did this on Ubuntu 8.04, I got the following error:

Updating RubyGems...
Bulk updating Gem source index for: http://gems.rubyforge.org
Attempting remote update of rubygems-update
ERROR:  While executing gem ... (Gem::GemNotFoundException)
Could not find rubygems-update (> 0) in any repository

Asking the all-knowing Google lead me to this fix.  You apparently need to remove the local source_cache file found in the GEM PATH.  You can get this path by running the command gem env, giving you this result:

$ gem env
RubyGems Environment:
- VERSION: 0.9.4 (0.9.4)
- INSTALLATION DIRECTORY: /var/lib/gems/1.8
- GEM PATH:
- /var/lib/gems/1.8
- REMOTE SOURCES:
- http://gems.rubyforge.org

Once you get your GEM PATH (in my case /var/lib/gems/1.8), then you need to remove the local cache by typing:

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/gems/1.8/source_cache

and continue to update gem.

3. Install rails

Now that you have gem updated, you can then confidently install rails and its dependencies by typing:

sudo gem install rails --include-dependencies

Make sure that you also add the gem bin path to your path. If you're using bash, then add the following line to your .bashrc, replacing <GEM_PATH> with your gem path found by typing gem env (don't forget to restart terminal):

export PATH=$PATH:<GEM_PATH>/bin

Verify installation by typing, rails -v and get the following (or similar) response:
Rails 2.1.0

4. Install a Database

Since I already have a MySQL server, I wanted to work with it instead of the default SQLite database for Rails.  This means installing the MySQL driver for rails and typing the command:

sudo apt-get install libmysql-ruby mysql-server

You can leave out the mysql-server if you already have the MySQL server installed.

5. Install a Ruby on Rails server

Reading some of the posts, I found that there are two most popular servers to use for RoR apps: Mongrel and Webrick.  Webrick I believe comes with the rails installation, but there's huge evidence that Mongrel might be better than Webrick.  Using the steps found here, I installed Mongrel on Ubuntu by typing:

sudo gem install mongrel --include-dependencies

You might be given options to select versions.  In my case, I just selected the latest version of mongrel (1.1.5) and fastthread (1.0.1) for ruby.

6. Create sample application

To make sure everything works, we can create a sample rails application.  Start by typing rails cookbook -d mysql if you're using MySQL, otherwise leave the -d flag out to use SQLite instead.  The database configuration assumes that you have a MySQL user called root, with the password disabled.  If this is not the case, then you might need to edit the config file cookbook/config/database.yml and make appropriate changes under development. To make sure the database also works, we need to create a sample application that uses our database. To do this, just type in console under the cookbook directory:

ruby script/generate scaffold recipe title:string description:text category:string


mysql -u root --password=<your_password> -e "CREATE DATABASE cookbook_development"

rake db:migrate

Once that's done, just execute mongrel_rails start under the cookbook directory, fire up your browser to http://localhost:3000/recipes (note that it's plural) and you should see your cookbook web application staring back at you.

Note: If you get a CGI::Session::CookieStore::TamperedWithCookie error when hitting the recipes page, just hit browser refresh and that should be fixed (not sure why it does that sometimes).

7. Find a good Ruby on Rails IDE (no, this is not optional)

Now the hard part of all this is getting settled into a familiar development environment.  There are some good discussions out there on what people use as RoR IDEs.  Since I don't have a week to throw away learning emacs, I've decided to start with something familiar, Eclipse.  The only decent Eclipse-based IDE out there is RadRails, but installing the standalone verion, I found that it was too alpha for me at this stage (crashes frequently, unresponsive, and can't find my rails installation).  So I'm settling right now with the Rails plug-in for NetBeans and so far it's been good for me, except for the occasional GUI lag that I'm getting. I've also heard good things about jEdit, but without the debugger support, it's not technically an IDE for me.

These were some of the questions which were running in the mind of Ruby. Ruby who used to be a sweet innocent and shy girl when she was a kid but her shyness and her innocence had today brought her to a point where now she stands waiting for the future to unfold itself. Ruby had always been full of life.. Wishing to enjoy every moment which came to her, when she used to laugh it looked like the whole world is smiling and laughing with her but now she don't even dare to smile.

Ruby just finished her high school studies and was now to choose a field which would decide her future. She with her full heart wanted to be a designer but her parents wanted her to go with accounts. She could not understand why is something like accounts is being forced to her specially when she has no interest in doing it. "Why the hell should I do it?", she asked herself. She remembered her father telling her long back that he had so much passion for electronics that he left chemical engineering within an year and did a diploma in electronics instead of getting a degree in chemical and see how happy and successful he is now.

Ruby always looked up at Mr. Arman, her father as her role model, someone who is so successful and so very helpful to everyone who went up to him. Everyone in the family had always stopped or felt irritated from his habit of trusting anyone blindly and helping them to the full. Many a times his this nature had brought him lots of loss financially but he never stopped trusting people and helping them. This aspect of his has kept Ruby's spirits so high and made her totally frank in front of him. Sometimes Ruby's friends used to be so surprised by seeing her talking so coolly and calmly with her father that they used to ask her how are you so friendly with your dad?  And there she gave them a bright smile of hers with a beautiful spark in her eyes.

But today, today is completely different. There is no spark in her eyes. She is just sitting and crying with thousands of questions running in her mind trying to find some words and space in this world full of people in and around her from whom she wants to ask so so many questions. "Will there be anyone to answer them ever? Will I be satisfied? Why why cant I do what my Heart wishes me to do? Why papa? Papa you also did not complete your degree because you had no interest in those subjects, then why are you saying me to do so? Why Krishan ji? Why?" These and many more questions were going on in inside her. Waiting for her to just open her mouth once and all these will be fired out. But only tears came down from those two beautiful sparkling eyes who were loosing their sparkle by getting filled with that salty water. She really wished someone to help her out, someone who could understand her, someone who could listen to her slow voice which was murmuring for help, which was saying to let me live my life my way but none. She felt there is none except her best friend who will listen to her.

Lord Krishan whom the whole world looks up as God she looked up as her friend. The only friend she had for almost 3.5 years of her late school life. No one bothered if she is sitting in class or if she is not. So numb as if her presence made no difference to anyone. Wanting to talk to everyone, longing for friends she found none so she made Lord Krishan as Krishan ji, her best friend. Krishan ji with whom she used to talk every single thing on this earth while sitting alone. If someone would have looked up to her at that time she would have easily got the title of a mad person.

While words were waiting to come out of her mouth her father and uncle aunt were pressurizing her to say yes for accounts and start studying for the entrance tests. She stopped crying for a minute, thought something and finally said,"Okay, I will do it." Till now she was not going with the wind but now she gave herself and her future, her career, her whole life to the unexpected. She gave off her interests at that very point, stopped expecting anything from anyone got depressed and dejected but decided to live to see what else is in stored for her in the coming future, as that's the way to live a life which she has learned from Mr Arman, the never say die attitude.

Ruby and her father then left for their house. All the way to home, there were thoughts roaming in her mind, what would have happened if papa was forced to complete his engineering? Would he have been so successful, happy and satisfied with his life as he is now? With so many unanswered questions fighting in her mind, they got a push when car stopped but only tears came out. With the first step in kitchen Mr Arman said mission successful, she will be doing accounts, hearing this brought smiles on everyone's face and tears in Ruby's eyes.

She went in her room and got lost in a world of thoughts again and asked herself is this called being in a fix or is this choosing in a dilemma? She had learned to fight from her dad and so she will fight her unanswered questions and make them silent by giving them a blow of smiles, her one yes, had brought on every member's face in her family but she had no answer for the tears she had brought in her own Heart.
