I often find these books to be a curiosity.  While they do promote literacy and excitement about reading for our children,  I also marvel at the engineering and creative thought which has executed each item.  My current favorite is the Chronicles of Narnia......my favorite page is the forest scene, as Lucy, Peter, Susan and Edmund exit the rear of the wardrobe closet into a magic snowy world of Narnia.  The  branches come alive, sparkling with glittering snow.  A separate tab can be gently  pulled to reveal the menacing Ice Queen and her coach.

How could a child's  interest not be captivated by such art work?

As a librarian, I am always promoting a book of one type or another to our children...highlighting  the adventures of the main character or the surreal setting.  The written word allows us to use our imagination and deductive reasoning skills. However, as part of my library training at the University of Alberta,  library students were required to make paper, then use a Gutenberg-type setting machine to gain a better understanding of the historical manufacturing of a book.  The amount of work which goes  into the latest copy of  James Patterson's new novel, or the much anticiapted  sequel to Eragon is astouting,  despite  the mass machine manufacturing which happens today.

Roberts Sabuda is a current  celebrity in the world of pop up books. A graduate of  Pratt Art Academy in Chicago, Il,  Sabuda has taken a love of paper cutting and origami  to the level of an art form. His latest book to hit the marketin November 2008  is  "Peter Pan". Who could resist the joy of Peter Pan, off for an adventure, defending his honor, and seizing life as only a boy can?   Sabuda creates Peter's world for the reader to leap into: Tinkerbell flies, pirates pop, and ships spring up with masts that sway in the breeze. A recent acquisition in our CCL collection, (and a source of great excitment for me) is a pop up version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green gables.  This slender pop up book, fastens with a black ribbon, allowing the user to visualise the  layout of Anne's famous Prince Edward Island home. As many know, Anne of Green Gables is  one of Sarah Potwin's favorite reads,  as well as  a cultural piece of my homeland.

Pop up books, when handled in a kind and gentle manner, are excellent holiday gifts and spur many children onto the discovery of reading.  Making pop up images can be seen as an artform .  I would invite all to check out  The Pocket Paper Engineer: how to make pop ups step-by-step  (Barton) volume in our library.

As the packaging suggests, this collection includes every issue of Star Trek comic books ever published on a single DVD-ROM. From the classic DC Comic releases to the more obscure fare such as the nearly forgotten Star Trek comic/record sets from the seventies (included here under "Bonus Material"). It's all here - even the annuals, movie adaptations, and mini-series events.

In the unlikely event a user is unfamiliar with the Star Trek universe, there's even a helpful "Bios" section which briefly explains the role of each major crewmember. In addition, there is a four-page summation of Star Trek history as well. Neither are particularly detailed, but they're a welcome bonus for a collection already brimming at the seams with material.

The comics are read through Abobe Acrobat (which is included) and the interface is quite efficient and user-friendly. To begin with, you simply click which of the five publishers you want and you're brought to an organized listing of the works they published. Once you select the group of issues you want, you'll be taken to a table displaying all the covers and issues numbers (see user images for my example of this). Simply select one and begin reading!

Of special note is how complete these comics are - all the original advertisements are intact as well as the "Letters to the Editor" sections. The ads are always interesting, especially the older ones. I believe every comic book since the beginning of mankind has an ad that promises you an instant muscled physique for only a few dollars. The Letters sections typically have insightful comments from the readers as well as often amusing rants and technical nitpicking as only Trekkies can do!

Naturally, reading from a computer screen is less than ideal. Nothing can match a hard copy, especially where comic books are concerned. Of course, the comics are fully printable, though I shudder to think how much ink and paper just a few dozen of these would require!

As far as quality is concerned, the older issues do not make as fine a scan as the newer ones. Typically the ones from the mid-eighties and older are more difficult to read, as the ink is slightly hazy and blurry in places. They're still fully readable, just not as crisp and clear as the issues from the late-eighties onward are.

One last note, the promotional material prior to the release of this indicated that the newspaper comic strip material would be included as well. Due to a variety of rights issues, they were not able to include these. Still, with over 500 issues here, it's possible even the most ardent Star Trek fan will require months and months to sift through all this material!

This is an incredible value and a very fun disc to have. The comics are perfect for a brief study break or a lazy Sunday marathon reading session. I can honestly say my purchase was worth every penny, and that's a rare thing these days!

(A note about the packaging: the disc is housed in a standard dvd case and comes shipped in a cardboard sleeve. The sleeve contains a listing of all the issues as well as a brief distillation of the "Classic Issues" included in the DVD-ROM. I think it's a good idea to cut these out of the sleeve and place them within the dvd case - as I said, always nice to have a hard copy!)

]]> <![CDATA[Starship Troopers (The Book)]]> http://sciborg.wordpress.com/?p=107 Sun, 12 Oct 2008 15:07:34 +0000 fleetadmiral http://sciborg.pl.wordpress.com/2008/10/12/starship-troopers-the-book/ Hey, I know I haven't posted in a while, so sorry about that.  So here is my second book review.  As some of you may know, I have been reviewing various media of Starship Troopers.  All this is based on the hit book by Robert Heinlein.  He wrote this over 30 years ago, but it applies to today as well.  The book begins with a mission being carried out by Rasczacks's Roughnecks.  The chapter introduces the reader to the main character, Johnny Rico.  After the mission, Johnny looks back on how he even became a Roughneck.  The book goes on to describe how Johnny joined up and his training camp in a narrative by Johnny himself.  Unlike the movie, the training camp is much longer and harder.  This is because, unlike the movie, each trooper is valuable and a master in combat.  Each trooper is worth at least 100 enemies, if not more.  After Johnny graduates from his training camp, he takes part in the First Battle of Klendathu.  Like in the movie, the battle is a loss, even though it is not as much of a loss.  After that battle is when he gets transferred to the Roughnecks, and spends a long period of time with them.  It is not until he talks to another trooper that he gets the idea to become an officer in the Mobile Infantry.  He goes through officer's training relatively fast.  For his final test before becoming an officer, he must have some combat experience.  His combat experience turns out to be the Battle of Planet P.  Like in the movie, the idea is to capture Brain Bugs.  Through several combat situations, MI succeeds, and things look well.  For the final chapter of the book, the scene is where Johnny is now Lieutenant J. Rico, of Rico's Roughnecks; the same outfit he was in after Klendathu.  This time, they are going back to Klendathu to win the war.  They are much more organized than the first time.  The book ends with the Roughnecks about to launch.   Overall, this book is great.  It uses combat and society to show Robert Heinlein's idea of an idealistic future.  The combat sequences are great also.  Trust me, buy the book!

Look at that poster.  How?  How is this not a home run?  You have zombies.  Zombies are fucking great.  You have strippers.  Here at Midnight Showing, we're all about women, especially those who seem to think clothing is optional.  Plus, it's a low budget film.  Really low budget.  So you figure they would  have to bring the violence, the gore, the hilarious and copious amounts of nudity, and the humor right?

Wrong.

Strippers vs. Zombies, or is that Zombies! Zombies! Zombies!, fails to even deliver us what is shamelessly promised on the cover.  To put it mildly, the overall quality of this film is only slightly above something a high school A/V club member would produce as a side project with his stoner buddies.  There almost no nudity, and none of it is in the least bit sexual or even funny.  The gore is a mish mash of horrible cgi, and so-so make up and practical effects.  The acting, from everyone besides the Samuel L. Jackson "funny black pimp" guy was pretty much forgettable, if not downright terrible.  The music is just generic sounding rip offs of pieces featured in movies like the Exorcist and Terminator.  And the director could barely keep the actors and actress's in the shot, let alone do anything with the camera other than follow the action, and he even did that shitty.

Oh, and the really embarrassing thing?

At times throughout the movie, people would talk, on camera, and there would be no sound.  Like an old Godzilla movie that's poorly dubbed.  Also, if any lines needed to be done over with dubbing later on, it was obvious the voices were recorded at different volumes, in like 128 kbps quality, in a completely different environment.  Obviously the makers of this film are not only shameless (a trait i would never fault anyone with), but also completely without a sense of professional pride.

It feels like they let this movie be released without watching the finished product.  Just like when I write for this site, you gotta proofread that bitch, and at least knockout the obvious errors, you know, like releasing a movie with LINES OF DIALOGUE COMPLETELY MISSING EVEN THOUGH THE ACTORS MOVE IS MOVING ON CAMERA!

If you follow zombies flicks, you'll know that 2008 has been the year of the stripper vs. zombie movie.  Earlier in the year a movie starring Jenna Jameson and Robert Englund came out called Zombie Strippers.  I thought it was friggin' terrible, but at the very least, it had some parts that showed you the filmmakers aren't completely brain dead.

Strippers vs. Zombies goes that extra mile to make you just give up hope.  It shows you why movies like Snakes on a Plane are made, and even how movies like Snakes on a Plane MAKE MONEY!  By the way, the "funny black pimp" i mentioned earlier, he actually said in the movie "I'm tired of these motherfucking zombies in this motherfucking club!"  Really.  He did.  And it was probably the best part of the movie.

Maybe you should watch it, just because that guy is hilarious.  No, no you shouldn't.  If there is any lesson to be taken from this film, it's that if you come up with a good poster, a good title, and have no talent, you too can help make a mockery of the horror genre.

Software major Satyam Computer Services has reportedly been banned from doing any off-shore work with the World Bank after forensic experts and bank investigators discovered that spy software was covertly installed on workstations inside the bank's Washington headquarters, allegedly by one or more contractors from Satyam Computer Services.

According to a FOX News report, apart from Satyam, two IP intrusions have been reported from China, and there have been six intrusions in all.

Investigators say that the software, which operates through a method known as keystroke logging, enabled every character typed on a keyboard to be transmitted to a still-unknown location via the Internet.

Upon its discovery, bank officials shut off the data link between Washington and Chennai, where Satyam has long operated the bank's sole offshore computer center responsible for all of the bank's financial and human resources information.

"I want them off the premises now," World Bank President Robert Zoellick reportedly told his deputies. But at the urging of CIO De Poerck, Satyam employees remained at the bank as recently as October 1 while it engaged in "knowledge transfer" with two new India-based contractors.

Satyam is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange and boasts having two billion dollars in sales and more than 150 Fortune 500 companies as clients.

In 2003, Satyam won a lucrative five-year "sole source" contract to design, write and maintain all of the World Bank's information systems. The contract, which began at $10 million, had grown to over $100 million by 2007. This year, the contract was not renewed. Satyam has declined to comment.

FOX News claims that outsiders have raided the World Bank Group's computer network, one of the largest repositories of sensitive data about the economies of every nation, repeatedly for more than a year.

It is still not known how much information was stolen. But sources inside the bank confirm that servers in the institution's highly restricted treasury unit were deeply penetrated with spy software last April. Invaders also had full access to the rest of the bank's network for nearly a month in June and July.

The crisis comes at an awkward moment for Zoellick, who runs the world's largest and most influential anti-poverty agency, which doles out $25 billion a year, and whose board represents 185 member nations.

This weekend, the bank holds its annual series of meetings in Washington, and just in advance of those sessions, Zoellick called for a radical revamping of multilateral organizations in light of the global economic meltdown.

Zoellick is positioning himself and the bank as an institution that can help chart a new path toward global financial stability. But that reputation, more than ever, depends on the bank's stable information infrastructure.

According to internal memos, "a minimum of 18 servers has been compromised," including some of the bank's most sensitive systems, ranging from the bank's security and password server to a Human Resources server "that contains scanned images of staff documents."

One World Bank director told FOX News that as many as 40 servers have been penetrated, including one that held contract-procurement data. It took ten days for bank officials to detect that they'd been invaded. Once they did, they shut down all external servers, except for e-mail, which it turns out the invaders were already using as their entrance point.

Eppure, nel 1984 il Ministero della Sanità degli Usa dichiarò solennemente che «il professor Gallo ha scoperto il virus dell'Aids» detronando almeno in fatto linguistico Montegnier.

Non lo è nel momento in cui il popolo non riesce a tutelare e a preservare il pensiero di individui capaci di creare visioni, speranze, sogni. Pensare, per poi di concretizzare. Nemmeno il popolo americano è riuscito a difendere l'unica vera mente innovativa che lo abbia rappresentato nel secolo scorso. Sto parlando di Kennedy, anzi dei Kennedy. Due fratelli diversi tra di loro, ma egualmente eccelsi per statura intellettuale e politica. 

Oggi il mondo va a rotoli e, oggi più che mai, non ce lo nascondiamo, un disegno si è compiuto. Chi conosce i meccanismi della finanza e dell'economia sa bene che nessuna crisi economico finanziaria può assumere i tratti di quella odierna senza un disegno precedente. Una crisi globale non è un evento occasionale. E' un disegno preciso che trova realizzazione nella volontà di chi ha il potere di crearlo. Nessuna storia e nessuna contraddizione in merito. L'ingenuità lasciamola al post crisi che sarà duro e traumatico per ogni essere umano presene su questo pianeta. 

Cosa fare se non rimanere sbigottiti? C'è qualcosa da fare. C'è sempre qualcosa, un riferimento, un pensiero, un'idea che può svegliare. Oggi non abbiamo politici in grado di creare nella massa sogni, prospettive di un'ideale migliore di mondo. Non ci sono oggi politici del genere. Non ci sono non Italia, o in Francia, o in Inghilterra... non ci sono in nessun paese del mondo, occidentale e non.

In passato, tuttavia, qualcuno ce n'era. Quel qualcuno ha parlato e, attraverso le sue parole, un segnale, seppur ridotto a piccolo barlume, lo ha lasciato ancora oggi. E' così che questo giorno, che rimarrà nella storia come inizio della prima recessione planetaria, voglio lasciare la testimonianza di persone che, in anni passati, hanno espresso pensieri e valutazioni attuali ancora oggi. Direi attuali più oggi che allora.

Il fatto di non essere stati in grado di difenderli è un errore che paghiamo e pagheremo nel tempo. 

 

Qualcuno ancora mi deve spiegare come è potuto accadere che da questi discorsi...

We decided to check out the Hartlepool Historic Quay - an 18th century harbor/port complete with a former warship that you could tour - the Trincomalee. We really had a great time. We toured the warship, played on a huge giant playground ship, saw a musket and cannon fire demonstration, went through an interactive area with lots of games about sailing etc.. and saw a presentation on what life was like aboard the ships (complete with a battle scene that was just a wee too realistic for our tastes. Had to tell Cade that the bucket of "legs" that had been amputated was just "firewood." He was too short to see down into the scene where the doc was about to perform another amputation!). But it was a great afternoon, and when we let the kids choose between McDonald's and Burger King for dinner (that's a pretty big treat for them over here), it was nearly perfect :)

PALERMO - La Giunta regionale siciliana, riunita fino a tarda notte a Palermo, ha nominato alla direzione regionale della Programmazione il professor Robert Leonardi, 63 anni, italo-americano, docente della London School of economics.

Leonardi, che prende il posto di Gabriella Palocci, si occuperà della gestione dei fondi di Agenda 2000 e soprattutto di quelli del periodo 2007-2013.

La Giunta ha inoltre prorogato di altri 45 giorni il contratto dei dirigenti generali, atteso che il disegno di legge di riordino dell'amministrazione regionale, che prevede tra l'altro la riduzione degli incarichi dirigenziali, inizia oggi il suo iter a Sala d'Ercole.

At last the great sensex bubble of India has busted. I clearly remember the Diwali season last year when all financial pundits were blowing their trumpets with the same raga – The horse of stock market is free of reins; there is no turning back blah blah blah… And they had fact behind those predicaments. Sensex was touching 20000 pts that time.

However, exactly on year after that phenomenon just reverse happens. The sensex reaches to depth of abyss by touching 11000 pts. It appears as if sensex has suicide by jumping off the cliff in to the fathomless valley. And to add to irony those self proclaimed pundits have now turned to doom's day preacher.

As always some unscrupulous victims of this bloodbath have left their heavenly abode. Strangely this time the list start from USA where an upscale Indian suicide after "his perfect American dream " got destroyed. More details here. As more and more loses will be reported in US this suicidal trend is bound to follow all over world.

However it will be interesting to mention here about the maverick real estate tycoon Robert T. Kiyosaki, author of best seller 'Rich Dad Poor Dad series'. It appears he had already mentioned about the financial crisis bound to follow in America. In his book 'Why we want you to be Rich' he had clearly mentioned the fall of American economic hegemony and its impact worldwide.

This is a time of shame and sorrow.  It is not a day for politics.  I have saved this one opportunity to speak briefly to you about this mindless menace of violence in America which again stains our land and every one of our lives.

It is not the concern of any one race.  The victims of the violence are black and white, rich and poor, young and old, famous and unknown.  They are, most important of all, human beings whom other human beings loved and needed.  No one – no matter where he lives or what he does – can be certain who will suffer from some senseless act of bloodshed.  And yet it goes on and on.

Why?  What has violence ever accomplished?  What has it ever created?  No martyr’s cause has ever been stilled by his assassin’s bullet.

Yet we seemingly tolerate a rising level of violence that ignores our common humanity and our claims to civilization alike. We calmly accept newspaper reports of civilian slaughter in far off lands. We glorify killing on movie and television screens and call it entertainment. We make it easy for men of all shades of sanity to acquire weapons and ammunition they desire.

Too often we honor swagger and bluster and the wielders of force; too often we excuse those who are willing to build their own lives on the shattered dreams of others. Some Americans who preach nonviolence abroad fail to practice it here at home. Some who accuse others of inciting riots have by their own conduct invited them.

Some looks for scapegoats, others look for conspiracies, but this much is clear; violence breeds violence, repression brings retaliation, and only a cleaning of our whole society can remove this sickness from our soul.

For there is another kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions; indifference and inaction and slow decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. This is a slow destruction of a child by hunger, and schools without books and homes without heat in the winter.

This is the breaking of a man’s spirit by denying him the chance to stand as a father and as a man among other men. And this too afflicts us all. I have not come here to propose a set of specific remedies nor is there a single set. For a broad and adequate outline we known what must be done. “When you teach a man to hate and fear his brother, when you teach that he is a lesser man because of his color or his beliefs or the policies he pursues, when you teach that those who differ from you threaten your freedom or your job or your family, then you also learn to confront others not as fellow citizens but as enemies – to be met not with cooperation but with conquest, to be subjugated and mastered.

We learn, at the last, to look at our bothers as aliens, men with whom we share a city, but not a community, men bound to us in common dwelling, but not in common effort. We learn to share only a common fear – only a common desire to retreat from each other – only a common impulse to meet disagreement with force. For all this there are no final answers.

Yet we know what we must do. It is to achieve true justice among our fellow citizens. The question is now what programs we should seek to enact. The question is whether we can find in our own midst and in our own hearts that leadership of human purpose that will recognize the terrible truths of our existence.

We must admit the vanity of our false distinctions among men and learn to find our own advancement in the search for the advancement of all. We must admit in ourselves that our own children’s future cannot be built on the misfortunes of others. We must recognize that this short life can neither be ennobled or enriched by hatred or revenge.

Our lives on this planet are too short and the work to be done too great to let this spirit flourish any longer in our land. Of course we cannot vanish it with a program, nor with a resolution.

But we can perhaps remember – even if only for a time – that those who live with us are our brothers, that they share with us the same short movement of life, that they seek – as we do – nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and happiness, winning what satisfaction and fulfillment they can.

Surely this bond of common faith, this bond of common goal, can begin to teach us something. Surely we can learn, at least, to look at those around us as fellow men and surely we can begin to work a little harder to bind up the wounds among us and to become in our hearts brothers and countrymen once again.
