These creatures are quite odd looking. A remora typically attaches itself to a larger fish, shark, ray or turtle. Perhaps they eat the bits of food that their traveling companions drop. Typically they do not harm the host, but occasionally, they may congregate around the gills and cause a problem. So if you ever stumble upon a sluggish manta or whale shark with a bunch of these suckers on their gills, give a hand and remove them by grabbing the head and pushing back toward the tail. :)

And here it is in profile form. You can see the "sucker" on top of its head. And yes, that is the top of its head even though it looks like it is swimming upsidedown.

And, finally here is the Remora with his "sneaker tread" fully exposed. This is the part that sucks onto its ride.

Just got a USB drive in the post today off eBay, cost less than a tenner and is the size of a credit

Just got a USB drive in the post today off eBay, cost less than a tenner and is the size of a credit card just a bit thicker. Pretty please with my purchase and it's gone straight into the wallet, loaded it with all my important files and then had a thought what if it gets nicked. All my recent software projects, my CV and any files with personal info on my PC are stored there.

So, I started looking around the Internet for something to help protect my files. I wanted something that was free but also robust enough to actually protect my stuff.

Found a little program called Remora which looked pretty good as it installed onto the removable drive and made the drive portable unlike some that required a copy on both PC's wanting to use the drive. Unlike Truecrypt which encrypted the whole drive and then mounted it.

However, on further inspection this may not be as good as it sounds. The website advertises 128 encryption, which it doesn't specify the algorithm it uses. The clincher is when using the contact form, apparently after filling in the form your message has been 'sended' and the e-mail they send you is to 'comfirm' your request.

Now this may only me being sceptical trouble is I just can't help being worried that all isn't exactly as rosy as the company describe. I've had a bit of a scout round the rest of the web but haven't found anything yet that i'm sure is free, portable and uses a decent encryption algorithm. If anyone knows of one thats out there please give me a shout.

Abusing File Formats Considered Harmful

This is how Remora's PO file looks like when opened in POEdit:

Red usually means that a string is broken and has an error - but in this case it does not, this is the file with the original strings. But since the "original" string is just a key name, POEdit thinks that all the "%s" etc. are errors, as they don't appear in the "original"...

And the status bar in that screenshot states: "329 strings, 0 fuzzy, 60 broken, 0 untranslated". In fact, none are broken and there are 329 untranslated.

There's nothing wrong in using a key-value paradigm. But when you're using it in a format that was not designed with this in mind, you just break things.

You might think that your first kiss as a gangly teen, laden with awkward intensity, ghastly overwrought emotion, and no small dosage of hormone poisoning, is the most important kiss in your life but you'd be wrong. The most important kiss in your life is the first kiss that your tot gives you.

Even though it's more akin to having your face sucked by a remora.
