A reply/post to emails I have received over the past couple of months.
First email (received today),

A reply/post to emails I have received over the past couple of months.

First email (received today), first reply:

No, I don't take any drugs when writing. Legally, but not technically. My last post, the Razorlight one was written when the malt whiskey got the better of me. So yes, drugs, technically, alcohol and all that, but therefore not illegally, at least in the UK. My Achtung Baby, fly one? Was written on green tea. My apologies if that would somehow be a disappointing answer.

Second reply, to many emails (though mainly from the same four people. Well, I assume four, may be just the one. Isn't it time, you let me know who you are, btw? Pictures will do. Only kidding. As you know, I don't really do comments unless I have met you in person. Thanks for reading me and to bother to send emails):

Andy Kaufman. Why? Well. I know A's and mine obsession with Andy Kaufman has to stop right here, right now. But it's like alcohol. The first glass-a-beer/wine/cognac/whiskey your peers/parents give/grant you tastes terrible. Then it gets better and better. /And/. Better. Until you gotta stop. But there is something very intimate, very private, very bonding when a girl and a boy, a woman and a man, two lovers, both 'get' something, get into something, or in this case, 'get' someone, get into someone, a performer, who by no means is a comedian, by no means can make you laugh out loud, but can make you both smile, can make you both feel good about yourself. Can make you look at each other and she will be thinking, "You may be older, you may be an arsehole, but I'm loving this". While he thinks, "I have no idea how to handle you, no idea about your idea of foreplay but let's watch some Kaufman movies coz Kaufman will soon turn this youtube/video/DVD session into an allmighty, fantastic shag-fest."

It's not about sex for her. It isn't for him. At all.

So, then we show these videos to our friends. And they don't laugh. They don't find it funny. Which is cool. Which is fine.

They don't find it sexy.

Their problem.

But they don't smile.

In my blog. My problem.

Once into him, Kaufman will become obsessive.

And, no, to directly answer one of your questions, it's not about us, clever people, against them, philistines. Those who get it and those who don't. Has nothing to do with it. It's an intimate, private, bonding thing we have.

If you haven't done so before, and shame on you if you haven't, check youtube.

But for you, four people, or one person:

Here's my Andy Kaufman selection:

Here's the almighty Mighty Mouse:

Here's him doing political incorrectness when Ricky Gervais still was a toddler:

Here's him being brilliant a performer:

Here's him being just, I dunno, too brilliant?

Too love you, until your eyes run dry ...

(You've heard it here before.)

(Sue me)

when you're hurting, sometimes the only consolation you get is the fact that everybody hurts even just for once in their lives. lame excuse, i know, but enough to make someone feel somehow relieved and comforted.

[audio=http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/8/19/2056066/REM%20-%20Everybody%20Hurts.mp3]

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

What did you think when you lost another?
I used to wonder why did you bother,
Distanced from one, blind to the other?

Listen here my sister and my brother
What would you care if you lost the other?
I always wonder why did we bother,
Distanced from one, deaf to the other.

Oh, oh, oh but sweetness follows
It's these little things, they can pull you under.
Live your life filled with joy and wonder.
I always knew this altogether thunder
Was lost in our little lives.

Oh, oh, oh but sweetness follows.
Oh, oh, oh but sweetness follows.
It's these little things, they can pull you under.
Live your life filled with joy and thunder.
Yeah, yeah we were altogether
Lost in our little lives.

Oh. Oh. Ah.
Oh, oh, oh but sweetness follows.
Oh, oh, oh but sweetness follows.

As a thank you to my Occasionally Irish Friend for making me a ‘How to Love Radiohead’

As a thank you to my Occasionally Irish Friend for making me a 'How to Love Radiohead' compilation I have returned the favour with an R.E.M. one. I'd be happy if it's half as successful as hers was. I am still grieving over what I had to leave off the cd (like Country Feedback and These Days) but still the ones that made it are all R.EM. classics.

Begin the begin (Lifes Rich Pageant – 1986)

Answer me a question I can't itemize
I can't think clear, you look to me for reason
It's not there, I can't even rhyme here in the begin

An obvious place to start perhaps. This is the opening track on what is probably my favourite R.E.M. album. Frantically sung and no doubt a breath of fresh air in the mid 80’s.

So fast, so numb (New Adventures in Hi-Fi - 1996)

I've played this round, I've played your lover.
I've played it out and to the hilt.
You're coming onto something so fast, so numb
That you can't even feel.

A fairly straight forward rock song R.E.M. style. There is something about this track that has always appealed to me. It’s got an endearing frantic calm to it.

     3. Walk unafraid (Up – 1998)

I'm prepared to look you in the eye
Look me in the eye
And if you see familiarity
Then celebrate the contradiction
Help me when I fall to

Another rocky song in a similar style to So fast, so numb but this time with a slight dance beat at it’s edges bringing it a more serious feel.

    4. Man-sized wreath (Accelerate – 2008)

Turning on the TV and what do I see?
A pageantry of empty gestures all lined up for me - wow!

The best melody on Accelerate in my opinion. This is a classic rock song with a sweet pop core. An irrisistable combination. I loved this on first listen and still do after having heard it hundreds of times.

adventure has laid its claim on you
it's all you want to do

One of the most straight forwardly (it's a word!) beautiful songs on ATS. A typical R.E.M. melody line which is the very reason why I love them so much.

6. E-Bow the letter (New Adventures in Hi-Fi - 1996)

cuts and dents, they catch the light

This has probably become my all time favourite R.E.M. track (along with Country Feedback and These Days). The female vocal is by Patti Smith. It’s apparently a stream of consciousness letter written while travelling on a bus.

7. The Ascent of Man (Around the Sun – 2004)

I'm a cactus trying to be a canoe

Michael says about this song: ‘It’s a male perspective on pregnancy, which I don’t think has been dealt with.
The very obvious Beach Boys sound is deliberate. ‘I found a way to make you Smile’ being a direct reference to Brian Wilson’s album Smile.
Taken from their wonderful debut album Stipe's lower than normal vocals anchor the melody to the glorious piano notes that drift in and around it making it one of the sweetest in their catalogue.

I temper madness with an even extreme

I am amazed the band never released this as a single and it’s still waiting for a great remix. This is the closest that R.E.M. have ever come to techno music. The relentless alarm siren and beat bring an exciting drama to a gloriously mournful melody.

Imaging deciding to write about every song in R.E.M.'s enormous back catalogue - it's a truly daunting task but Matthew Perpetua did just that. And as the grand finalé Michael Stipe agreed to answer questions about the songs and lyrics. Now as much and all as I love R.E.M. the lyrics have never meant that much to me. Most of the songs tend to have very little coherent meaning. What I do very much admire however is the sounds of the words Michael chooses with lots of internal rhyming and word play.

I decided to send in a question not about the meaning of lyrics but rather about something that has plagued R.E.M. in recent years. Obviously everyone and their llama sent in questions so mine never got asked but it is still something I think about. Here it is...

Accelerate is brilliant but then REM have consistently been brilliant in many different ways which is why I admire the band so much (if you are interested I wrote about it here ) What I understand is that the band are unhappy with how some of the songs ended up sounding on Around the Sun rather than having a problem aith the songs themselves. Would you ever consider releasing an album of re-recorded tracks? Some ATS tracks might happily benefit and some other songs might be interesting to hear in alternative versions too. The holiday single version of Let me in is exquisite as is the recent live version. The rockier version of Drive was similarly impressive. Leave was a super single that never happened, it's crying out for a remix release. An album of parallel REM tracks. I'd certainly love to hear such a thing. Thanks for considering my question.

Funnily enough the last question he answered was as follows;

"Michael,

Are there any songs you wish you could go back and re-record in the studio after performing them live?

most of them, yes. Like 95% of them. So it goes "

That frustrated me an enormous amount cause it is a yes/no question and begs the follow on question, why not do it then?

Quelle: Nature Neuroscience

Yves Villeneuve/The Chorus Man

From the brief Jim Morrison-ish spoken-word intro to The Chorus Man, you can anticipate a more downbeat record, which is exactly what singer/songwriter Yves Villeneuve delivers here. With a husky, enigmatic voice recalling Michael Stipe of R.E.M.'s early days, Villeneuve prepares us for a snowy winter with a selection of moody, sometimes bitter tunes. The brooding psychedelia of "See River Flow (North)" reverberates with the ominous melodrama of Thin White Rope. "You treat me like dog dirt," Villeneuve spits on "Down On Two Knees" as ragged riffs scrape the walls.

Sonically Villeneuve takes a mostly minimalist approach as his guitars and vocals push the songs forward; there's plenty of repetition in the lyrics and notes as well. But the hooks do stick even though the venom and sense of despair might be overwhelming to some. This is not happy, pretty-boy stuff; Villeneuve walks on the same bleak corners as the Doors once did, tying together a bracing match of blues and indie rock.

REM.

Supernatural.

We just returned from a two week RV trip to California.

We just returned from a two week RV trip to California.

I know, I know, California is controversial and some of the hassles we brought upon ourselves.

But I have to say that the events of our trip and the events on the national scene conspired to bring me home to Iowa in a state of near delirium. I feel as if I have a loop tape of that REM End of The World song going around and around in my brain.

I don't know if this will be adequate, but

JUST IMAGINE WHAT IT'S LIKE:

...WHEN YOU are out on the road in all kinds of dicey places fifteen hundred miles from home and you have had to leave the protection of your guns behind because Iowa concealed carry permits aren't honored in many states

...WHEN YOU have to surrender all your fresh homegrown vegetables at the border of California in order to protect all of that state's nuts (sorry California, that's an old joke I couldn't resist)

...WHEN YOU get to the dry lake which is BLM land that has always been open free of charge to the public and you find the government is now asking admission fees even for folks with adjacent property which has been separated from the dry lake with a fence and armed officials to enforce the boundary

...WHEN YOU are without access to the fact-checking resources of the internet and for two weeks have to rely on the likes of Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN for your sense of reality

...WHEN YOU watch snippets of John McCain running around like the proverbial chicken with its head cut off (or at least more stunt pilot than fighter pilot, it seems) trying to score political points on the economy

...WHEN YOU hear disconnected bits of MSM interviews with Sarah Palin and her answers meander into non-sentences and then later she tells everybody it was just because she was mad, although earlier when Big Daddy McCain sat next to her for protection, sarcasm wasn't mentioned as an explanation for her disconcerting behavior

...WHEN THE U.S. HOUSE of Representatives comes up with a bill to bail out Wall Street and Wall Street succeeds in holding the government and the people hostage in order to force this kind of bill, although not this actual one, into law

...WHEN ANOTHER bill, this one from the Senate, is passed despite the citizens' outcries, which in fact have lessened due to PR repackaging it as "rescue" rather than bail out legislation

...WHEN YOU find out this bill is almost 450 pages long, is full of pork and earmarks, has not been read by most senators, and has been signed by that self proclaimed enemy of earmarks and Washington corruption, MAVERICK JOHN MCCAIN

...WHEN YOU hear on CNN that among many of the other delights in the bailout ...er rescue... bill is a line giving amnesty to a certain percentage of illegal aliens

...WHEN YOU turn on dish network and the default setting on the program guide is a 24/7 Barack Obama channel

...WHEN YOU watch a video of little children singing a hymn to Barack Obama

...WHEN YOU arrive home and your renters have sneaked a couple of extra inhabitants under their roof, and even though this could compromise their septic system and the well you share with them, you would be a heel to say a word given the fact you know they are really struggling these days

...WHEN YOU find out your retirement assets have decreased on paper by thirty or more percent

...WHEN YOU are waiting for a meeting with a "negotiator" from the state of Iowa which is taking 50 acres of your farm for a highway and offering you half what your land is worth

...WHEN YOU realize this government deal will cut your income --although probably not your property taxes-- by 25% but you can't buy any comparable land in the neighborhood for the price the government is offering you for yours

...WHEN YOU watch the vice presidential debate and both candidates are misrepresenting the facts, if not actually lying-- well, maybe nothing new there but you were so hoping for great things from Sarah Palin

...WHEN YOU have been hoping against hope that Sarah Palin is the real deal but you are slowly coming to realize that she appears to agree with McCain on just about everything except maybe drilling in ANWR

...WHEN YOU come to realize that in the debate Palin didn't argue for economic deregulation and openly championed the disastrous bailout legislation

...WHEN YOU see that by her apparent acceptance of homosexual behavior as well as homosexuals, Palin may well be paving the way, albeit inadvertently, for same sex marriage

...WHEN IT becomes clear to you that in the debate Palin seemed reluctant to enter into any meaningful dialogue on Roe vs. Wade

...WHEN YOU start to thank your lucky stars that at least Palin unlike McCain would work to maintain your Second Amendment rights

...WHEN YOU thank God you live in Iowa where under certain circumstances and according to the whim of your local sheriff you are still allowed to carry a loaded gun

...WHEN JUST at that moment Barack Obama comes on the tube with his plans for making concealed carry illegal in every state across the nation

...WHEN...AND SO ON AND SO FORTH...

Yes, just IMAGINE!

And while you are doing that, I'll imagine you are having many of the same thoughts that I am.

Ladies and gentlemen please welcome the R.E.M.

O front man των REM, Michael Stipe

What's the frequency Kenneth, Drive, The one I love, Imitation of life, Loosing my religion, It's the end of the world as we know it και το εκπληκτικό, ασύληπτο, μοναδικό Man on the moon για κλείσιμο.

We had a wonderful time this afternoon at a kiddie rock show with two of the little girl’s old

We had a wonderful time this afternoon at a kiddie rock show with two of the little girl's oldest, dearest daycare pals. She's known these boys since she was six months old and loves them a lot. I was feeling almost like a hip mom, sitting on the floor at the cool upstairs performance space in an old, possibly legendary corner tavern, pounding my plastic shaker in the air, rockin' out with the tots to "Yellow Submarine" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider." I all but let myself go on "No More Monkeys Jumpin' On the Bed!," shouting out the titular verse with the band and my little girl.

At some point, I realized that the other parents were singing along with a rock song that was entirely unfamiliar to me. It's a GenX band and was a largely GenX parental crowd, as far as I could tell. There was a line in the song, a metaphor, about a tornado on the sun, or around the sun. I may have been in the middle of a generational anthem, and not only was it not mine, I didn't know it and am not sure if it even was an anthem. I thought for sure I'd be able to google this and find out what it was. Not so easy. Maybe it's an R.E.M. song, I thought, because I heard one parent comment to the other about R.E.M., as if jointly praising the band for having played R.E.M.

I don't know from R.E.M. In spite of my 1980s youthfulness, I'd be only slightly exaggerating to say that if it happened after Cyndy Lauper's "True Colors," I don't know about it. I ran with crowds that partied to Motown into the late '80s. I married in 1990 and don't know what my peers partied to in that decade, or whether they partied. I do know it's been about 20 years since I've been to a big house party -- sometimes at a stranger's big house -- with a keg on the back porch and a crowded kitchen ... but I digress.

According to the Internets, R.E.M. had a song called "Around the Sun," although I didn't see anything about a tornado in it, and a song called "White Tornado," for which I could not find lyrics, in spite of there being numerous google hits for those lyrics. Any GenXers or hipper than I GenJonesers out there who know what this song could have been? Not that it changes my out-of-generation moment. And, ultimately, not that it matters.

The kids loved the drums, shakers, tambourines, singing and dancing. My gal and her pals loved seeing each other. I got to see the little girl sitting on a bar stool between two of her favorite little guys, sipping on Juicy Juice, eating pretzels, swaying in a preschooler way to the band. Afterwards, the lead singer, who plays daycares and birthday parties, obliged a request from one of the little boys and serenaded him and the little girl with "Take Me Out To The Ballgame."

I wasn't thinking about being a Baby Boomer or GenJoneser or not being a GenX mom. I was having a wonderful time watching the little girl have a ball, and being her mom!

The Uglysuit - Everyone Now Has A Smile.

R.E.M. - Imitation Of Live (MTV Unplugged).

G. Love & Special Sauce - Back Of The Bus (A Year & A Night live). Back Of The Bus" sehr, sehr schick.

Joan Osborne - I'll Be Around.

Willie Nelson & Sinéad O'Connor - Don't Give Up.

Jamie Laboz - The Darkness.

Katie Melua - Mockingbird Song. Nette Stimme, nette Arrangements, nette Songs. Das isses dann aber auch schon.

From time to time I find myself wondering if I'm an architect. I know that somewhere, deep inside my desk drawer, there's a piece of paper that "officially" takes away the doubt. There are also 5 years worth of memories of studio, AutoCAD, sleepless nights, too much coffee/cigarettes, big words that I didn't understand and a fare share of criticism that are burnt into my flesh like a branded cow - "Architect"....pssssss....

Most of the time I don't think of myself as an architect. God knows that if you ask me about floor panel sizes, construction materials and building standards, you'll probably get a questioning look. I spent a year working as a grunt in an office and that was one year too many. My career as an architect can be characterized by working for a few months in an office, getting into a fight with my boss, quitting/getting fired and moving on to the next office. In retrospective, I think that tended to happen because my boss was an architect and a very proud one at that, and did not appreciate people who tried to question what an architect is.

So in celebration of some-reason-to-celebrate I'm making list (anyone who knows me also knows my passion for lists...) of things that make an architect an architect. If you have any suggestions please don't be shy...

An architect...

1. always wears black.

2. has cool glasses and/or thick, black rimmed, plastic glasses

3. likes to use big words that no one understands

3(a). enjoys abusing his friends with his fancy words as he talks and talk and talks...

4. gets aroused by sexy graphics/renders/diagrams

5. has 'S,M,L,XL' by Rem Koolhaas

6. has a glorious collection of books, 84% of which he has never opened

6(a). has a glorious collection of books, 98% of which he has 'read' (which means flipped through and looked at the pictures)

6(b). isn't very good at math (see 6 and 6(a))

7. worships Le Corbusier and/or Mies

8. fascinated by the aesthetics of the machine

9. drinks too much coffee

9(a). smokes too many cigarettes

10. takes pride in not sleeping

11. works 25 hours a day...24 of which he spends on talking (3(a)), drinking coffee (9) and smoking cigarettes (9(a))

12. makes less money than a farmer in a third world country

13. convinced that his job is the most important job in the world

14. adores white spaces

15. thinks that 'practical' is just another word for 'ugly' or 'boring'

16. appreciates the good things in life (although he can't afford them...)

17.

18.

19.

20.
