The word “biodiversity” is really being hammered home lately. As a species, a great deal of us recognize that it is important to have diversity – even if we do not like each other – we recognize the importance of having animals, plants, and ecosystems to sustain life in different regions. While the grasp a being a tiny speck, in the grander scheme of things, is hard for some, understanding Nature isn’t.

Since we know the peril, and the working, running, scenarios being played and presented by top scientist (top scientists=top economist), we have to start thinking long term.

Yes. Yes. I realize I have been saying start now to save. Which is true – that is going to have to happen. What I have not been saying is – since the impact of our environment is slipping now – we are going to have to “ride out” what happens next. Efforts to reduce and rebalance our environment start now, so generations from now – our own species won’t die out.

Simple.

If you disagree, that is fine. However, look at the stories and ecosystems before. Yes adaptability is the name of the game – but if you recognize the patterns, mankind has not been here that long and the rebalancing is taking place. How much the effects will be depends on us – as it always has since we are the ones who are suppose to be caring for it. Here are some examples: ~ Dumping waste into the fresh water. Producing high levels of CO2. Blowing up mountaintops to get to coal. The over logging of trees. Landfills that are full of trash and more. This “list”, does not stop. This list is a small fraction of the crap that will and should be addressed and followed through, to make the next events easier for our bodies to adapt too. Just as animals, plants, we are a working machine as well.

At present Unpackaged can offer certified organic products, fair trade where possible and products which are definately not airfreighted.

Reduce your impact on the environment and minimise your contribution to landfill by getting unpackaged, saving money, and reducing waste and pollution.

If reduce, reuse, recycle is going to be my new mantra, I need to figure out where it came from and

If reduce, reuse, recycle is going to be my new mantra, I need to figure out where it came from and why that specific order is ideal. The actual components themselves seem a little obvious. Reduce means use less stuff and reduce our carbon footprint. Reuse means to re-purpose things before tossing them in the trash. Most people do this by using plastic grocery bags for trash can liners and reusing their plastic water bottles. (Wait a sec. Both of these are plastic. Are these practices bad? I guess I'll have to leave that for another time.) Lastly, recycle means to take stuff to the recycling factories so the factory can break products down to smaller components and reuse them in other products.

But aha! Through some research, I’ve realized that there are more than 3 parts to what’s called the waste hierarchy. A few nice papers I’ve found do a good job of explaining this. (See sources below or interspersed throughout this post. Or just skip that and read what I’ve written here.)

The waste hierarchy was first developed by the environmental movement back in the 70s. The hierarchy has 6 parts that follow along a continuum, instead of just the 3 I originally thought it had. In order of least impactful to the environment to most, they are: Prevention, Minimization, Reusing, Recycling/Composting, Energy Recovery, and Disposal. To quote a great sentence in a discussion paper by Gertsakis and Lewis, (1) “The essence of these approaches is characterized by a need to avoid, eliminate, prevent or significantly reduce the causes of environmental problems, as opposed to managing the impacts, wastes and emissions arising further down the product or service life cycle.” Basically, following the waste hierarchy in the proper order has two goals: 1) keeping things from making any sort of impact in the first place and 2) reducing the impact of things if an impact is not avoidable.

This new hierarchy introduces a few ideas that are new to me (and maybe you, too!). The top of the hierarchy, Prevention and Minimization, are actually 2 separate types of actions that should replace Reuse in the familiar saying most people are used to. But I guess Prevention, Minimization, Reuse, Recycle doesn’t have a catchy ring to it. :D Also, Composting goes hand in hand with Recycling. Energy recovery. . . I’m not so sure about. But a little more research lead to me another great paper. (2) (I recommended you take a look at this one. The first page is a picture of the continuum and the paper is much easier to read than the others mentioned!) Energy recovery is defined as: “energy from waste is the recovery of energy value from waste by burning the waste directly or by burning a fuel produced from the waste.” Um, suuure. I get the feeling that this is the kind of stuff I see on Dirty Jobs.

To see if there’s any evidence that this actually works, I was able to find an abstract of a paper proving that the hierarchy works if followed in order. (3) Of course, this paper studied solid waste in New York City, but I am willing to consider that things working on a large scale will also work on a small scale, such as our humble abodes. (By the way, abstract is just a fancy way of saying summary of a research paper.)

So where to go from here? I can think of 2 paths. (Of course, let me know if you think of others.) I could dig deeper into “the causes of environmental problems” as mentioned by Gertsakis and Lewis. In an effort to be as non-political as possible, I’m going to avoid that. Basically, I’ve heard 2 purposed reasons for the state of the world, human activity and geological cycles. I can’t do anything about the second reason, so I guess I’ll stick to trying to do something about the first. So I’ll go the second path and start making my way down the continuum.

Next post: the start of Prevention. I'm taking suggestions on where to begin so post your comments below.

I've been a bit bad about keeping within my budget lately... (acually, that's not really anything new.)

First up, I FINALLY bought some Klean Kanteens for the boys and I, and I can't wait to use them. No more plastic sippy cups with bad BPA! I got a really great price (and free shipping!) from Reusable Bags; they also donate a portion of their sales to help preserve and restore our natural environment. Go check it out on their site - lots of great stuff!

I recently bought some Franklin goodies, too! Some note cards to include in hand knit presents and things of that nature. He also has his first book coming out this month, and I have pre-ordered my copy; I can't wait until it all gets here!!!

Oh, and one last little splurge. Check out the store's makeover that was done by Jenny of WebsyDaisy. ;) I'm working on updating the items currently in the store, and will have new items up by next week.

A common argument is that the recycling process causes more harm than good. While recycling vehicles & factories do give off carbon emissions, they're intercepting trash from landfills and oceans - which is much more harmful in the long-run.

How can you limit the 'harm' of recycling in Philadelphia or your local area? Reduce the amount of materials you use in everyday life. Here are 6 ways to limit your waste:

No Paper or Plastic. Use reusable bags whenever you go grocery, clothing or general shopping. Some stores such as Trader Joes give you .05 cents per reusable bag you use - and you'll limit your plastic bag collection. (One enthusiastic clerk punched in that I had 10 bags, giving me .50 cents back.) This also can prevent that embarassing situation of plastic bags ripping and your purchases spilled all over the parking lot. Reusable bags can cost as little as $1 so you can leave a few anywhere convenient - in your car, by your front door or even folded inside your purse or gym bag.

BYOC- Bring your own cup or mug when picking up coffee from Wawa or Starbucks. Stores will often give you a discount on beverages when using reusable cups. If you're an everyday coffee drinker at Wawa, you can save at least $26 per year - 26 free coffees!

Leave free giveaways with vendors- Although I would encourage taking free lip gloss anyday, many company advertisements become dust collectors in the form of useless key chains and other objects you'll never use. Although they'll be tempting to pick up, don't take it if you won't use it.

Buy economy size - or the largest size you'll be able to use. You'll save cash with larger quantities & limit packaging.

Purchase refillable products - Choose soap or other products that sell refills. You can display the smaller size but keep the economy size bottles under the sink and reduce packaging.

Purchase recyclable products - With over 50 shampoo brands and endless choices in markets, check the bottom of the plastic container for the little triangular recycle symbol. (Remember Philadelphia, be sure the number is 1 or 2 for plastics.) You'll be surprised at how easy it is to find a similar product in recyclable materials.

I don't have a cat, but I think a lot of you do. Allie has GREAT instructions for making your own cat litter. Here's the link, please check it out so you can spend that money on cat treats instead of litter.

What I love about this is it is one more way to reuse newspapers. Also, if you make your own litter, that is one more way to cut down on the "miles/cost" of the products you use. A lot of people are trying to eat locally, but I think that can be extended to consume locally too.

A tablature tab or what is often called, is very similar to the sheet music. But the tabs will show you where to put their fingers on a guitar instead of notes to play. Therefore, using tabs, you can spend your time learning to play the guitar instead of learning to read music.

Learning to read simple guitar tablature is one of the most important skills a beginner can learn esteban guitar lessons. Once you have acquired valuable know-how, you can start to learn some of their favorite songs, and the practice of his time, become a much more fun. Learn to read guitar tablature simply to reduce the number of hours of practice beyond their training, compared to traditional training.

Now, nothing prevents to become the next Guitar Hero, a few easy grasp of the guitar and tabs that will soon be able to rock with the best of them.

Linzer writes "In this blog entry, Fred Crozat (head of Mandriva's engineering team in France) explains in great detail how his team has been detecting and getting rid of bottlenecks in the boot process, from the early stages to loading the desktop environment, thus decreasing overall boot time. An informative tour of the nuts and bolts of the boot process and how they can be tinkered with: initrd, initscripts, udev, modprobe calls. The basic tool they use for performance analysis is bootchart, which produces a map of process information and resource utilization during boot. The final trick: preloading desktop environment files while waiting for the user to type her password."

Ancak Çiçek’le her tartışmasında Kudret’i karşısında bulması, onu yadırgatır.

As a rule, living a green lifestyle takes a little thought each day. It means you have to change some habits that you've probably had for a long time and didn't realize.

As I think about it we can apply this same way of looking at things to the present economic situations that the country is in. In general a green lifestyle is a frugal lifestyle. We reuse, recycle, re-purpose and reduce. We turn off the CFL when we leave the room.

For the last two weeks I've watched the news almost every night live from New York City or Washington DC. As the days have started to get shorter I've noticed one thing, all the buildings where business' are going bankrupt along with the Capitol have all the lights on. Why?

If they are out of money or even need to save money or just want to be responsible why don't they turn the lights out? All of those lights on all of those floors in all of those buildings has got to add up to a lot of money and a lot more wasted energy.

I don't think this will solve the problem, but it's a start. And I really don't want to give my hard earned money to people that don't even turn the lights out at night.

Ceren’i kimin kaçırdığı ortaya çıktığında, Cengiz hayatının şokunu yaşayacaktır. Bu sırada vakit daralmakta, her dakika Ceren ölüme bir adım daha yaklaşmaktadır. Alev ise başından itibaren bu işin içinde yer alarak düğümün çözülmesinde önemli bir rol oynar.

For the past year, I have been working to reduce my energy usage to reduce my carbon footprint and to lower my electric bill. My most recent saving measure has been to turn off my hot water heater during the day. According to my electric company, running a hot water heater can be as much as 20 percent of a typical electric bill. I started turning it off last month, and I received my bill this weekend. My usage went down 5 Kwh per day and my bill dropped overall 13 dollars from last month to this. The most telling number however is the one that shows my usage this year compared to last year. Last year in the same time period I used 36 Kwh a day and this year I used 21 Kwh per day! That’s a drop of 15 Kwh a day.

Have you ever noticed how your little one only wants what you have?

And, trying to redirect such a little oneʼs attention is futile when they covet what you are holding. Take for example, handing my littlest son his own toy cell phone to play with when I know he is eyeing mine up to drool over. Or, when I attempt to give him his Ugly Doll (that I happen to covet myself) and all I get from the manic toddler are more tears until he finally gets the remote Iʼm desperately hanging on to.

I may not have found a solution for the above coveted items, but I have for my water bottle. Shrieks and more would elicit from the mouth of my beautiful babe as he would frantically grab for said water bottle.

Then, one day I had an epiphany!

I would make the little one his own beloved water bottle that he could play with to his heartʼs content which hopefully would leave mine for only me! As a wannabe crunchy mummy, I thought it would also be a great way to live by the mantra,"reduce, reuse, recycle!"

So, reaching in to the recycling container, I found and cleaned up an empty, plastic water bottle. After drying it out completely, I added a handful of dried rice and resealed it tightly. It was with great hesitation that I handed it over to the little guy, worried whether or not it would actually pass the test. Thankfully, he squealed in delight at his newly recycled, homemade water bottle rattle.

Today, that recycled water bottle rattle is looking decidedly bruised and battered, but I prefer to call it loved because itʼs been getting a lot of playtime. For the longest time, when the munchkin would cry out for my boring, old water bottle, I could simply pull out his own bottle and hand it to him to keep him busy!

Yes, thou shalt covet they motherʼs recycled water bottle!
