On Friday we had four semifinalists - all of the would become the new world No. 1 if she wins the US Open after Ana Ivanovic lost early. In the end Serena Williams won in front of her home crowd...

Serena Williams is the Queen of New York! Because of the rain on Saturday the final was played on Sunday. In a really exciting final Serena won 6-4 7-5 over Jelena Jankovic who played her first Slam final in her career. It's the 9th Grand Slam title for Serena Williams who became world #1 again. Jankovic led in both sets with a break but couldn't hold them... Although she played a great match.

4th round:
No big surprises in the top half of round 4. All favourites won their matches. Italian Flavia Pennetta is maybe the most unexpected player to win but she had no problems with French Amelie Mauresmo. The dream runs of German qualifier Anna-Lena Groenefeld and French wildcard player Severine Bremond were stopped in the 4th round.

All eight players in the quarters were seeded. And all better seeded players won their matches. The most exciting match was the duel between Williams sisters Serena & Venus. Venus won the last match in Wimbledon finals but this time Serena Williams won in a very close match in two tiebreaks.

Roger Federer takes his 5th consecutive US Open title! And he shows all his pundits that his time is not over. He played awesome tennis and defeated a tired Scotsman Andy Murray 6-2 7-5 6-2. Murray who played his first Grand Slam final in his career started good but then Federer shows all his class. In the end Murray had no chance but played a great tournament and defeated World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semis...

4th round:
Rafael Nadal had some problems with Sam Querrey but Roger Federer had much bigger problems with Igor Andreev. The Swiss was close to an early exit. Federer had to fight over five thrilling sets to beat the Russian. Novak Djokovic played a five setter vs. Spaniard Tommy Robredo too. The big surprise of the Men's draw is still qualifier Gilles Muller from Luxembourg. He kicked 5th seed Nikolay Davydenko in four sets out of the tournament.

All favourites reached the semis. Rafael Nadal had to play four sets vs. Mardy Fish from the USA. More problems than expected had Roger Federer with Gilles Muller but finished the match in three. Serbian Novak Djokovic played solid vs. Andy Roddick. The most exciting match of the quarters was Andy Murray vs. shootingstar Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina.

Roger Federer is on his way to his 5th consecutive US Open title. In a great semifinal vs. 3rd seed Novak Djokovic from Serbia he won in four sets - before the big rain came. The match between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray was interrupted by the rain so they continued on Sunday. It was a great match too and World No. 1 Rafael Nadal lost in the end vs. an Andy Murray who played on maybe his highest level!

Normally Cara Black and Liezel Huber are doubles partners but this times they were opponents. Black and her partner Leander Paes won in a close match 7-6 6-4 vs. Huber and Andy's brother Jamie Murray.

Serena Williams is the 2008 US Open Women's champion for third time, defeating No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic in a thrilling 6-4, 7-5 final in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Williams' win earns the world No. 1 ranking.

Women's Singles:

Women's tennis has a crisis. Since Justine Henin retired no player earned the crow of being World No. 1. Players like Ana Ivanovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova lost early, all other top players played not on a very high level.
But there have been some positive players on the other hand. German qualifier Anna-Lena Groenefeld and French wildcard winner Severine Bremond are still in business and above all Gronefeld showed some attractive tennis...

Notable results:

1st round:
Anna-Lena Groenefeld & Ekaterina Makarova were the players of the first round. German Groenefeld who had a bad time in the past and made her comeback some weeks ago upset 11th seed Daniela Hantuchova in two easy sets. Russian Makarova won vs. her compatriot and 10th seed Anna Chakvetadze after being a set down.
No. 1 seed Ana Ivanovic had some problems with Vera Dushevina but won in three sets.

The biggest surprise in this second round definitely is the win of qualifier Julie Coin over the world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic. Ivanovic who has had problems with her thumb never showed her quality. On the other hand Julie Coin played maybe the match of her life.
Ivanovic's Serbian compatriot Jelena Jankovic had many problems with Swedish Sofia Arvidsson but won in three close sets. Some other seeded players like Olympic Bronze medalist Vera Zvonareva and Hungarian Agnes Szavay had to say 'goodbye' after the second round.

The male top players are still in business. New World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, titleholder Roger Federer and last year's runner-up Novak Djokovic all in all had not much problems to reach the 4th round. The player of the week is qualifier Gilles Muller from Luxembourg who won two five-setters after being 0-2 sets down.

Notable results:

1st round:
German qualifier Bjorn Phau was supposed to be an easy opponent for Olympic Gold medalist Rafael Nadal but it was hard work for the new World No. 1. Phau fought but in the end Nadal won in straight sets.
There were some exciting five-setter in the first round. The most exciting perhaps was the win of unseeded German Tommy Haas over French star Richard Gasquet. The most surprising winners in round one were Japanese Kei Nishikori (won vs. Juan Monaco) and German qualifier Andreas Beck (won vs. John Isner).

2nd round:
In round two there were not much upsets. Only the wins of Mardy Fish over Paul-Henri Mathieu and of qualifier Gilles Muller over German Tommy Haas were surprising. Portuguese qualifier Rui Machado was close to an upset vs. 13th seed Fernando Verdasco from Spain but in the end the favourite took hold.
All top stars and favourites mostly have easy wins. Merely last year's semifinalist David Ferrer from Spain and Scot Andy Murray had to fight in close matches.

This round there were some surprises and some exciting five-setters. Seeded players like James Blake, David Nalbandian and David Ferrer lost. Especially Gaucho David Nalbandian made a very poor performance vs. Gael Monfils.
Stanislas Wawrinka and Andy Murray both fought back after being 0-2 sets down. Luxembourgian qualifier Gilles Muller has been the most surprising player of the tournament so far. After winning over Tommy Haas after being 0-2 sets down he succeed the same way vs. 18th seed  Nicolas Almagro from Spain.

In the run-up to the Olympic Games in Beijing many top players withdrew due to injuries. For example Maria Sharapova. Short time before the tournament started French Open winner Ana Ivanovic and my favourite player Tatiana Golovin withdrew too. Favourites like Svetlana Kuznetsova, world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, Venus and Serena Williams lost early in the tournament.

At the end it became an all Russian championships. All medalists come from Russia. Gold won Elena Dementieva who won over Dinara Safina in the final. Vera Zvonareva won bronze.

After winning Bronze in 2000 Russian Elena Dementieva won Gold for the first time in her life. In a close match Dementieva defeated her compatriot and French Open runner-up Dinara Safina in three sets after Safina won the first sets. But the little sister of Marat Safin had many problems with her serve so Dementieva turned the paper and took the in the end deserved Olympic title.

All medals in women's singles go to Russia. 9th seed Vera Zvonareva won after a strong match 6-0 7-5 over Chinese Na Li. Li defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova and Venus Williams on her way but in the end she didn't win any medal in front of her home crowd.

After the disappointment for Venus & Serena in the singles tournament they recovered damages in the doubles.

Unlike the women there were not so much withdrawals in the men's draw. Only Andy Roddick, who concentrates on the US Open, and Richard Gasquet were missing. The big question was: Could Roger Federer retrieve his worst season in years with his first Gold medal at Olympic Games. He got it but "only" in doubles. In singles he lost in the quarters...

So the new No. 1 Rafael Nadal snatched Gold. Fernando Gonzalez got Silver and Novak Djokovic Bronze...

Djokovic deserved the Bronze medal with a 6-3 7-6(4) win.

Clement & Llodra lost one day before their epic semifinal after 4:45 hours with 17-19 in the third sets vs. Aspelin / Johansson.

Zmiana kolejności nastąpiła natomiast tuż za plecami Serbek, bowiem Rosjanka Swietłana Kuzniecowa przeskoczyła rodaczkę Marię Szarapową i znalazła się na trzecim miejscu. Natomiast Radwańska wyprzedziła inną Rosjankę - Annę Czakwetadze.

Druga z polskich tenisistek Marta Domachowska zajmuje 54. pozycję na świecie.

Radwańska pokonała Cornet w III rundzie turnieju 6-4 6-4.

W następnej rundzie Polka zmierzy się ze zwyciężczynią meczu Dominika Cibulkova (Słowacja) - Jelena Jankovic (Serbia).

Dzień wcześniej Agnieszka Radwańska nie dała żadnych szans Chorwatce Jelenie Pandzić. W II rundzie turnieju wygrała w godzinę 6-2 6-0.

19-letnia Agnieszka Radwańska (WTA 15) za zwycięstwo w Stambule wzbogaciła swoje konto o 30 tys. 500 dolarów oraz zdobyła 140 punktów do rankingu WTA.

W drugim półfinale 18-letnia Francuzka Alize Cornet (WTA 34.) pokonała Annę Chakvetadze (WTA 8.) z Rosji 3-6 6-4 6-3.

To właśnie Chakvetadze wyeliminowała w III rundzie turnieju A. Radwańską, wygrywając spotkanie 6-4 1-6 6-1.

W walce o ćwierćfinały Williams pokonała Agnieszkę Radwańską 6-3 6-1. W pierwszym secie, przy stanie 5-1 dla Williams, Agnieszka jeszcze nie dawała za wygraną, zdobyła dwa kolejne gemy na 5-3. Pomimo ogólnie dobrej gry, był to jednak ostatni taki zryw Radwańskiej w tym meczu.

W spotkaniu ćwierćfinałowym Serena zagra z pogromczynią Henin, Rosjanką Safiną.

Marta Domachowska (WTA 81) odniosła pierwsze w karierze zwycięstwo nad tenisistką z pierwszej dziesiątki rankingu WTA. W czwartek w pokazowym turnieju Suzuki Warsaw Masters pokonała dziewiątą rakietę świata Rosjankę Elenę Dementievą 6-3 6-4.

Marta oświadczyła też po meczu, że podpisuje 3-letnią umowę sponsorską z firmą Suzuki.

Od długo oczekiwanego przez polskich kibiców meczu Agnieszka Radwańska - Marta Domachowska zacznie się 30 kwietnia turniej pokazowy Suzuki Warsaw Masters.

Będzie to ich trzeci pojedynek w historii. W zeszłym roku Radwańska wygrała z Domachowską w Sztokholmie. Dwa tygodnie temu na turnieju w amerykańskim Charleston Domachowska po zaciętym meczu przegrała z Radwańską 4-6 6-4 3-6.
