During the 2006 war nearly all businesses in the north of Israel closed. Many Israelis fled their homes here, heading south staying with friends, family and even occasionally strangers willing to take them in.

In Kiryat Shmona, a town close to the Lebanese boarder, this man stayed behind and tended to one of the few grocery stores that remained open to serve its neighbors.

He tells the story here of his experience and of the war's lasting psychological effects on him and his family.

I’m trying to attend 90 AA meetings in 90 days because I want to see if I can complete somethi

I'm trying to attend 90 AA meetings in 90 days because I want to see if I can complete something challenging and time-consuming. Because of anxiety and depression I've always had a problem with completing things and taking responsibility. So far I've been to a meeting every day for the past two weeks, meaning that I have about eleven weeks left. It hasn't been too complicated or difficult so far. Daily meetings at least give my life some purpose. I'm hoping that by the end of this stretch I will be a bit more sorted. I'm hoping that I will have dealt with some of my insecurities inside and outside of the fellowship. I'm hoping, basically, that I will be in a strong enough position to turn my life around and give my career a kick up the arse.

I can't say that I feel in a strong position at the moment. I feel very much caught between two possible directions which my life could take. On the one hand there's the pressing need for money, which has encouraged me to apply for jobs nearly every day for the past six weeks. I've gone for relatively easy but interesting office jobs which I think I might be able to tolerate for more than a week, as a safeguard. On the other hand, there is my life-long ambition to write stories, a dream which never dies. I'm trying to write the second draft of an exciting children's science-fiction novel at the moment, but because I'm so concerned about not having much money, I can't put all my energy into it. And for some reason, when my heart is not entirely in my writing, it doesn't seem to work. In that state, everything I write is half-hearted and rushed. It only works when I'm happy and contented. The last time I had a real burst of creative energy was last September, when I'm sure I experienced my first spiritual experience in AA. Since then there has been a slow trickle of words coming out of my mind, but it's hardly been inspiring. I want to finish this novel more than anything in the world. Whether it gets published or not is not so important, I just know that it needs to be written. Somehow, the idea of finishing a proper novel has taken on a great significance in my life. It's almost like I won't be complete until I've written it.

The good news is that I actually finished the first draft, so the whole story is already there on paper. I've probably said before that all I need to do is fill out some of the characters as well as some of the imagery and description. The second draft is all about style, rather than substance. Unfortunately, editing in this way takes a long time, and most of the time I find it really boring. I know the novel won't be finished until I've done it, though. Leaving the first draft as it was would have been like trying to sell the shell of a house. It wouldn't have had any of the plubming, electrics or furnishing inside.

I'm so drawn to writing, I wish I could just forget about work and do this forever. But the need for money continues to bother me like a recurring nightmare. The other day I found myself asking God what I'm supposed to do with my life. Why has it been so hard to find paid work this summer? Surely if I was meant to spend my time writing, then God wouldn't have allowed my financial situation to become so difficult. Surely if I'm meant to get an ordinary job, God wouldn't make it so difficult to find one. I know the saying 'if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans', so I'm desperately trying not to force my self-will onto this situation. I seriously want to know what I'm supposed to be doing with my life. Why do I feel so stuck at the moment?

In all of this, I suppose I hope that doing 90 in 90 will help me find some kind of direction. My sponsor is very pleased that I've finally decided to give 90 in 90 a go: he says it can provide you with answers when you can't find them yourself. I'm not sure yet what answers I might find, if any. I think the main reason I'm doing daily meetings is actually to stop myself from going mad. If I was just sat at home this summer, doing nothing except worrying about the job situation, I'd lose my mind. At least in meetings I can talk about it and get some support and feedback.

One gentle and innocent flirting game I remember playing once with a boy, was discussing which character in the Wind in the Willows we each identified with: the practical and cheerful Ratty? the impetuous Toad? homeloving Moley? the wise, but aloof old Badger? or perhaps the chief weaselly Weasel?

I don't remember much about this boy now - or what he said - but I still like playing this game. Philip Pullman has a variation on it in his Northern Lights trilogy, where every person has an accompanying daemon in the shape of an animal. Lyra's daemon, because she is a child, is always changing - one moment a cheetah, then a bird, or a moth. The Master of the College has a raven, and Mrs Coulter a golden monkey.

And I think, for what it's worth, my daemon would be a bat: almost invisible but with very good hearing.

My username is taken from a love poem by Jo Shapcott which starts like this:

My life as a bat
is for hearing
the world.

If I pitch it right
I can hear
just where you are.

[....]

Bat death is not listening.

So it is kind of odd for an (old) bat like me to be blogging which is about talking, when what I normally do is to listen. But I thought I would give it a try.

Middle Sexes: Redefining He and She sensitively explores the controversial subject of the blurring of gender as well as the serious social and family problems - even dangers - often faced by those whose gender may fall somewhere in between male and female. Narrated by noted author Gore Vidal and filmed in the United States, Europe, Asia and South America, Middle Sexes examines the ways different societies and cultures handle the blurring of gender, sexual identity and sexual orientation. Through interviews with transgender, intersexual and bisexual men and women, as well as experts from the scientific and academic communities, the film considers the entire spectrum of sexual behavior, personal identity and lifestyles among people of different backgrounds and cultures. From this, a theme of tolerance and appreciation of diversity emerges in the film.

In the Psychology Today article Spicing Up Your Memory, it is revealed that a 2003 study involving 44 healthy young adults - not seniors suffering from memory loss - showed sage oil improves short-term memory. While this study is intriguing, I would like to know the following:

1) Would these findings hold in a much larger experimental group? Presumably only 22 of the 44 received the sage oil. That's a small number of people on whom to base this conclusion about sage oil's effects.

2) Was this placebo-controlled study also double blind?

3) How many milligrams of sage oil did each member of the experimental group receive?

4) Would the desired effects last over a period of several months, or do the benefits wane with use of the supplement?

Also worth noting is the article's statement that "... the clinical trials conducted so far have used sage oil extracted from a species different from the common garden sage."

"Why do grown-ups have to take over everything?" This innocent question from acclaimed journalist and international bestselling author Carl Honoré's son sparked a two-year investigation into how our culture of speed, efficiency, and success at all costs is damaging both parents and children. When the impulse to give children the best of everything runs rampant, parents, schools, communities, and corporations unwittingly combine forces to create over-scheduled, over-stimulated, and overindulged kids. The mere mention of potty-training, ballet classes, preschool, ADD, or overeating is enough to spark a heated debate about the right way to raise our children. The problem is that despite the best intentions of all involved, the pressure to manage every detail of our children's lives from in utero through college is overwhelming.

Delivering much more than a wake-up call, international bestselling author Carl Honoré interviews experts in Europe, North America, and the Far East, talks to families around the world and sifts through the latest scientific research. Not only do we see the real dangers of micromanaging children, but Honoré also shows us an emerging new movement inspiring many to slow down and find the natural balance between too little and too much. Blending the finest reportage, intellectual inquiry, and extraordinary true stories, Under Pressure is the first book to challenge the status quo by mapping out an alternative to the culture of hyper-parenting that is presently pushing children and their parents to the brink.

(Lol - it's not entirely unappropriate to how I'm feeling at the moment, and perhaps it's one of those interesting things just to know.)

1. Denial - not accepting the loss, acting as if the loved one is still there or alive.

2. Anger - wanting to get back at the loved one for leaving.
3. Bargaining - begging/praying/asking some kind of bigger force (usually God) for the return of the lost one.
4. Depression - Beginning the realization of loss, helplessness, lack of control, and feeling 'paralyzed'.

5. Acceptance - accepting that the person didn't leave on purpose, finding the good sides to the loss, feeling comfortable and moving on.

The middle 3 stages can happen in any order, but all stages must be passed to completely recover.

peace :) xx

Hypothesis:
The increasing number of citizen develop Narcissistic personality is correlated to the booming of Real Estate industry in Hong Kong. As Real Estate produce more, it need to increase the demand. The consequence of this marketing strategy: 'Everyone must have one apartment', thus encouraging the tendency of Narcissistic personality, thereby resulted in increase number of Narcissistic personality found in general population in Hong Kong.

remember, i changed my seats in psych to sit next to an asian kid. and i was definitely hoping he was korean and guess what he turned out to be one! yes. im pretty superficial for going after only koreans but hey thats what dramas do to you. forget all the other men of diverse nationalities, koreans are all i need.

at first, i developed some animosity towards him, yes even if he was korean. one day he moved to the seat behind his original one. i assumed he didn't like i sat near him but that logic is just self-centered. he moved back the next day and ever since then, things have been dandy. small talk and all. and finally i mustered the courage to ask him to be my partner for our research project. but im fairly sure he wanted it because he asked me earlier what i was doing during the weekend and asked if i started it on the paper.

so...good luck to me. im making more and more korean friends! yessssss.

By Dr. Jemille Wasi, Islamic Post Staff Writer

In the last issue of the Islamic Post, I introduced the second in a series of articles whose objective was to provide a more detailed introduction into El-Gilani Methodology. The first article [an introduction] highlighted the historical aspects of EGM. In the second article, I described the method itself and some of the requirements involved in its practice. The purpose of this current editorial is to expand on the idea of psychiatric diagnosis being the primary area of focus for this treatment system.
A central theme of Sufi psychiatric science, and the basis of EGM, is that the body is a product of the soul. Man is a spiritual being with a physical form.
This differs from the prevailing mainstream dogma that the soul is a product of the body. In modern psychiatry, man is divine and our consciousness, mind, and souls are derived from our physical self. In essence, this means that we are physical bodies with a spiritual soul.
Some modern psychiatrists go as far as to exclude the notion of a “soul” altogether; so much so, that inquiries into the non-corporeal facets of human existence negate the current laws of medical and physical sciences. These conventional, modern beliefs comprise the core obstacle that is hindering the curative treatment of psychiatric ailments. Moreover, these principles led to the error of attributing mental disease to physical phenomena, which in turn, has led to the employment of physical means, i.e., regimens of drug and other therapies, to cure mental disease. These measures do not provide a cure, and have yielded minimal results in even controlling the symptoms of mental disorders. This symptom control is not identical in all cases treated with the same modality, and the effectiveness varies on a case-by-case basis.
Because EGM is based on Sufi scientific codes, and because Sufi science revolves around the reality of the soul, EGM has been used primarily for psychiatric ailments. In fact, the effectiveness of EGM in curing psychiatric maladies is due in part to the truth of the first-mentioned idea: we are spiritual beings with physical forms.
All aspects of Sufi psychiatry revolve around the purification of the soul from characteristics such as lust, greed, anger, jealousy, and other inner pollutants. Possession of these traits spiritually, manifests physically in various forms. The only way to remove these inner pollutants is from the inside out. Another facet of this is that a person’s negative actions or deeds can serve to strengthen these characteristics spiritually; so care also needs to be taken in performing good deeds, as part of the inner cleansing. This cleansing process is essential to curing mental disorders.
For the last 40 years, El-Gilani Methodology has enjoyed tremendous international success in curing mental diseases, as well as other diseases that are based on one’s deeds, and the condition of one’s soul, such as AIDS. There are many scientifically proven cases of the effectiveness of this method documented in the book, Quranic Psychiatry by His Eminence, Sheikh Syed Mubarik El Gilani. Not surprisingly, the only entities that decrease the effectiveness of EGM are the ineffective physical means currently used to treat mental disorders. These modalities work similar to how negative actions and bad deeds work in obstructing the cleansing process.
Because EGM focuses on the root of the problem with mental disease, it can effectively stand alone as a treatment option. One can see that eliminating the concept of the soul as the primary form with an associated physical vehicle, destroys the true essence of the etiology of mental disease at its very root. In order to progress in this field, one has to first acknowledge the above-mentioned Sufi principle, in order to truly understand the mystery of mental disease, its causes, signs, symptoms, and remedies.
As always, only from Allah, Glorified is He and the Most High, can we be healed!

“I am often asked about my psychotherapeutic or analytic method. I cannot reply unequivocally

"I am often asked about my psychotherapeutic or analytic method. I cannot reply unequivocally to the question. Therapy is different in every case. When a doctor tells me that he adheres strictly to this or that method, I have my doubts about his therapeutic effect. So much is said in the literature about the resistance of the patient that it would almost seem as if the doctor were trying to put something over on him, whereas the cure ought to grow naturally out of the patient himself. Psychotherapy and analysis are as varied as are human individuals. I treat every patient as indivually as possible, because the solution of the problem is always an individual one. Universal rules can be postulated only with a grain of salt. A psychological truth is valid only if it can be reversed. A solution which would be out of the question for me may be just the right one for someone else.

"Naturally, a doctor must be familiar with the so-called 'methods.' But he must guard against falling into any specific, routine approach. In general one must guard against theoretical assumptions. Today they may be valid, tomorrow it may be the turn of other assumptions. In my analyses they play no part. I am unsystematic very much by intention. To my mind, in dealing with individuals, only individual understanding will do. We need a different language for every patient."

Restless is not enough to describe it. It's somewhere between that and recklessness. Now, I am only wishing that my soul is still intact with my body.

I feel like someone who's been estranged for so long that the release of the tightening ropes would add to the pre-existing pain.

I have been naive. I was suffocating myself.
The human mind is like an equilibrium; Any changes made would need an opposing force, or drive, to suppress or sublime the former. Or we would tumble down into darkness or drown in the brightness of light.
