Although I no longer comment at Slacktivist, I still like reading Fred Clark (and am hoping for Tribulation Force Fridays...). I noticed he had a recent post up asking for pie recipes, tips, and other fruity topics.

Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It is an irrational and transcendent number. It cannot be represented or calculated exactly in decimal (or in hex, or any other way except by saying c/d). It is one of the beautiful and useful numbers of the universe.

A German enthusiast Ludolph van Ceulen taught fencing and mathematics, and when he died on 31st December 1610, after spending years of his life calculating pi to 35 decimal places, the number 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288 was engraved on his tombstone. I think that on 31st December 2010, lovers of pi around the world should assemble on the streets and recite pi and eat pie and remember van Ceulen.

Phi is the ratio of a line divided so that the ratio of the length of the longer part to the entire line is the same as the ratio of the length of the shorter part to the longer part. It is irrational, but not transcendent: nevertheless, it is the golden number, because it is shiny: 1.618033988749895....

Pi is the same everywhere and always will be and always has been, wherever there are circles. Phi is a number that exists because we like it: it has human appeal. It is a universal number, yes, and you can see it in the proportions of snail shells as much as in Notre Dame, but just as it would surprise me if we encountered an alien species that did not know pi, it would also surprise me if this alien species knew phi.

(The Fibonacci series, another lovely set of numbers, has a ratio between one Fibonacci number and the next that converges on phi. Try it for yourself, you'll like it: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233. 377, 610, 987, 1597...)

For me the most obvious use of phi is in art and architecture: a building or a room is pleasing to the eye if its proportions are calculated according to the Golden Section. For you, it may be music, or the way plants grow, or the way our bodies are proportioned. But it's all phi.

A pie is made with a pastry shell, a filling, and a pastry lid: if there's only the shell and filling, it's not a pie but a tart or a flan or a quiche. All of which are good, but there is something especially fine about pie.

Shortcrust pastry is made with low-gluten flour and butter. (If you are vegan, margarine that is hard at room temperature is just as good as butter, though it has less flavour: if you are coeliac, use a mix of at least 3 gluten-free flours (gram flour, buckwheat flour, hemp flour, potato flour, arrowroot, corn flour...) and more fat than the recipe calls for: I am told that lard is better in gluten-free pastry than butter, but as to that, I can't say. The BBC recommends an egg... I guess the moral is, if you're coeliac, don't be vegan. Hm.)

You weigh out the flour, then add half the weight of the flour in butter, and a pinch of salt. Wash your hands thoroughly in cold water, and rub the butter into the flour using the tips of your fingers. If your hands warm up, wash them again in cold water. Do not rub the bits of flour and butter that congeal on your fingers back into the bowl. When the bowl of flour and butter looks like a bowl of fine breadcrumb, mix it into a ball with cold water. Wrap the ball in cling film to avoid hardening and put it in the fridge for quarter of an hour or so.

Bramley apples are best for pies, I say with British patriotism. No, really, they are. But whatever kind of apple you intend to use, cut them into quarters, cut out the core, peel the apples - enough to fill the pie dish in a slightly heaped way. Sprinkle them with lemon juice so they don't brown while you're doing the pastry.

Divide the pastry into two balls, one slightly larger than the other. Roll out one half and line a floured pie dish with it. You can blind bake this if you like - but if you do, remember you need to fill it with beans to avoid the pastry rising. And frankly, I don't think you need to for this kind of pie. The pastry will cook, it just won't be very crisp.

Fill the pastry shell with the sliced apples. Generously sprinkle with dark brown sugar and whatever spices go well with apple: I like cinnamon and clove.

Roll out the other pastry ball, and make a lid. Cover the apples with the lid, and pinch the lid and the sides together firmly (this is another reason for not blind-baking the lower crust - you never get a proper seal). Use a fork to make holes in the pastry lid, in a pattern if you're that way inclined. The recipe books of my childhood always used to suggest you use the scraps of pastry to make decorations in leaves and fruit, and this always used to make me feel very inadequate. But you do need the ventilation in the crust.

You can brush the pastry with milk or with white of egg to give it a goldeny shiny look. Or not. It's all visual.

Bake in the oven for half an hour to 40 minutes. The brown sugar melts and mixes with the apple juice, especially if you use Bramleys, and floods out over the lid of the pie through the little ventiliation holes, and dear sweet Pomona, it is a glorious thing.

Eat hot with thick whipped cream.

Several years ago, when the victim was suspected of being a  killer, Cole found evidence that proved the man couldn't be the killer. Now an album of shots of a number of women obviously taken at the moment of death turns up by the body. One of them is that murder victim of three years ago, as well as two that have happened since then!

Suddenly Cole seems to be on everyone's SL. But he knows the man was not guilty of that murder three years ago, so he decides to find out what's going on. The novel takes several twists along the way and I was frankly surprised by the outcome. That's good, except from what I've read at other places, they weren't as surprised by the ending.

Maybe I haven't read enough of these things or something. I'm recommending it for mystery fans. Well woth a look.

Rommel empfiehlt folgende Aktion - angelehnt an ein happening, das Albert Oehlen irgendwann mal für ein Schwein vorgesehen hatte: während der nächsten Antifa-Demo einfach dem Typen seine eigenen Kanonenschläge in den Arsch stecken, ihn an genügend Heliumballons aufhängen, n paar Meter in die Luft gehen lassen und dann die Kanonenschläge zünden, so dass sich seine blutigen Überreste über die versammelten Antifaschisten verteilen. Ach so: das Ganze natürlich filmen und bei Youtube reinstellen.

Die Juden wurden quasie dazu gezwungen, mit Geld, Geld zu verdienen.
Dass sie dabei im Laufe der Zeit an Erfahrung gewonnen haben und eben gelernt haben, dass es eben einfacher ist, damit Geld zu verdienen, als lebenslang für ein paar Kröten zu buckeln, sollte man den Juden im Nachhinein einfach nicht vorwerfen dürfen.

Und sowas findet PI natürlich auch völlig in Ordnung:

Besser als Gefängnisse sind aber Lager, die kosten nicht so viel.
Zelte, Gräben, Stacheldraht, Zäune und ein weites freies Sichtfeld vor den Sperranlagen - mehr braucht man nicht um Kriminelle einzusperren.
In Kriegszeiten hat man damit auch 100.000e festgehalten, warum sollte das bei rechtskräftig Verurteilten heute nicht gehen?

Wen auch immer GottWillEs da wegsperren will, interessant ist auf jeden Fall, dass er (jüdische) KZ-Häftlinge und/oder - die wurden von den Nazis ja genauso in Lagern konzentriert - Kriegsgefangene für kriminell hält.

Is this supposed to make parents with kids in the Catholic system switch to the Public system?

Has it worked?  I doubt it.  In fact, smart parents might think twice about switching to a system that wastes money on giant green signs.

• Fui ao show do John Mayer com abertura do One Republic em agosto e do Maroon 5/Couting Crows/Agustana semana passada. Os dois foram em Tampa, no mesmo anfiteatro. Nem preciso falar que foram muuuuito bons! Do Counting Crows e Agustana foram meio fraquinhos, mas ta valendo!!! To tendo muita sorte com shows dessa vez. Essa semana tem Jonny Lang (meio desconhecido, mas um dos meus preferidos) no EPCOT, no Food and Wine Festival. O problema eh que eu trabalho nos dois dias do show. Se ninguem pegar meu shift de quinta eu vou dar call in personal e vou pro parque do mesmo jeito. Wish me luck!
• Estava no ultimo dia da Pleasure Island. Nao consegui entrar em nenhum club pq os ingressos acabaram as 19h, mas la fora tava muito bom. Quase nao dava pra andar de tanta gente. Meia noite tiveram 10 minutos de fogos, foi lindo. Mas apesar de tudo isso, foi triste pensar que em 2 horas estariam fechando as portas pra sempre. A gente ficava imaginando o povo que trabalhava la ha um tempao... complicado. No dia seguinte passei la a tarde. Motion e 8trax ja nem tinham mais a logomarca na frente e o lugar deserto.
• Comprei um Macbook preto que ja deu problema. Ou o problema eh comigo, nao eh possivel hehehe (meu outro macbook nao reconhecia a bateria). O negocio dessa vez eh com o leitor de CD e DVD. Tava tudo certo ate ontem, quando pela primeira vez fui gravar minhas fotos em DVD. Deu erro no meio e a partir dai nao quis ler mais nada. Vou ter que marcar um horario e perder um day off pra levar ate o Florida Mall na assistencia.
• Hoje fui receber o pessoal do HCP de outubro. Deu uma saudade do dia que tava chegando, sem conhecer nada, descobrindo pra qual condominio ia, quem seriam as roomates... Mas bom que a maioria agora ficou no Vista!!!
• Meu record card: 1.0 Call in sick, 0.5 dei clock in 5 minutos atrasada pro Discovery Day, 1 Reprimand e 1 Great Service Fanatic.
• Pois eh. Ja tenho uma reprimand, por total falta de atencao. Estava na parte que as pessoas saem da ride. Me ligaram do comeco dela pra avisar alguma coisa e o telefone nao tava funcionando direito e eu fui ligar pra manutencao pra avisar. Soh que enquanto eu fazia isso eu fiquei de costas pros guests e a concha que entra cadeira de rodas passou por mim (com gente dentro) e nao deu tempo de parar a ride pra descerem antes que dessem a volta pro comeco dela. O que tem de tao grave nisso eh que o espaco entre o UNLOAD (fim da ride) e o LOAD (comeco da ride) nao tem o tapete que detecta intrusao, ou seja, se alguem pular da concha ali, pode sofrer um acidente pq a ride nao vai parar. Enfim... ja foi neh. E agora procuro levar as coisas muito mais a serio pra nao cometer um erro besta desses de novo.
• 3 dias depois ganhei 1 great service fanatic quando tava apresentando o Turtle Talk e uma das managers estava assistindo o show da sala do ator. Quando terminou ela entrou no teatro e disse que eu estava fazendo um otimo trabalho, que dava pra ver que eu gostava mesmo de estar ali. No fim do show seguinte ela me trouxe o Fanatic! eeeeeee
• Quarta (08 de out.) a blusa da minha costume vai mudar. Eu ja vi a nova e eh horriiiiiiiiivel! Nao que a outra seja bonita, mas era uma das poucas que nao precisava enfiar pra dentro da calca centro-peito. Agora vai ser branca no meio, com as mesmas mangas de power ranger laranja, soh que o laranja mais chamativo do mundo. Fica parecendo aqueles caras que ficam no meio do aeroporto fazendo sinal pros avioes sabe?!  Nao queeeeero. E hoje ainda descobri que essa mundanca aconteceu pq os velhos full-time fizeram uma peticao pedindo! q raiva! Tenho que lembrar sempre que existem piores... as do world showcase por exemplo!
• Gente famosa ate agora eu so vi o Daniel, cantor, brasileiro, cara de pudim... ele tava andando pelo Epcot um dia desses. Mas no The Seas ja foi o presidente do Epcot, os produtores do Animal Planet e uma familia do Extreme Makeover Home Edition. =)
• Esses dias fui testar a nova atracao da Kim Possible que vai ter no EPCOT. Muito legal participar disso antes de todo mundo, e vai ser mto legal, se der certo ehehehehe. Eh o seguinte: os guests vao ter uma missao, tipo, encontrar os inimigos da Kim Possible ou um segredo escondido. Pra isso eles vao recebendo pistas num celular que vai mandando pra diferentes pontos do World Showcase. Por exemplo, uma das instrucoes era: va ate o Pavilhao do Mexico e fique em frente a gaiola do papagaio. Quando vc chega la e aperta OK, o papagaio comeca a falar com vc. Eh mto incrivel o tanto de mudancas que fizeram, o tanto de detalhes que colocaram em casa pais. Agora... o teste foi com o parque fechado, sem ninguem nos pavilhoes. Quero ver com tudo lotado, vai ser meio complicado. Nessa sexta vou fazer um outro teste la, vamos ver hehehehe
• Ja teve inspecao aqui no meu apto. Passamos e ainda ganhamos balinhas. E nessa sexta tem de novo!!!
• Quanto a UCF... minhas primeiras aulas foram Theme Park e Guest Service. A de Theme Park foi muuuito boa, a de Guest Service poderia ter sido bem melhor se a professora nao fosse mto insuportavel. Agora estamos de "ferias" e quando voltarmos vou fazer Brand Management e Leadership.

Als die Beamten gegen 9 Uhr 45 eintrafen, gab die 40-Jährige an, dass sie gegen die Politik im Iran demonstriere. Nach einer Personalienfeststellung wurde gegen die Frau ein Platzverweis ausgesprochen.
Der Polizeiliche Staatsschutz hat wegen des Verwendens von Kennzeichen verfassungswidriger Organisationen die Ermittlungen übernommen.

Wegen seiner dunklen Hautfarbe ist gestern Abend gegen 19 Uhr 10 ein 32-jähriger BVG-Busfahrer von einem 19-Jährigen beleidigt worden. Als der Fahrgast, der den Bus der Linie 136 in der Niederneuendorfer Allee in Spandau gerade bestiegen hatte, aber in der Tür stehen blieb, gebeten wurde, sich für Ein- oder Aussteigen zu entscheiden, zeigte er den „Hitler-Gruß“ und schimpfte los. Er benutzte fremdenfeindliche Bezeichnungen, sagte, der Busfahrer habe „als Ausländer keinen Anspruch auf einen Arbeitsplatz“ und forderte die Gaskammer. Die Polizei ermittelt gegen den vermutlich psychisch gestörten Mann wegen Volksverhetzung, Verwenden von Zeichen verfassungswidriger Organisationen und Beleidigung.

Wie zuverlässig ist das Internet als Informations–Medium? Das ist das Thema dieser Medien-Seite. Hier ein Bericht über dubiose «Nachrichten»-Seiten, die teils auch Falschmeldungen in Umlauf bringen.

Fürth zum Beispiel. Da schlägt in einer U-Bahn-Station ein Jugendlicher auf einen 34-Jährigen ein. Lässt nicht von ihm ab, verfolgt ihn eine lange Rolltreppe hinauf bis ins Zwischengeschoss, prügelt ihn dort bewusstlos. Es folgt bundesweites Entsetzen und Ratlosigkeit, was einen 15-Jährigen zu einem solchen Gewaltexzess treibt. Böse Erinnerungen werden wach an die beiden U-Bahn-Schläger in München, die neun Monate vorher einen Rentner fast tot getreten haben.

Die Medien tun in solchen Fällen, was ihre Pflicht ist. Befragen Psychologen, Jugendarbeiter und Ermittlungsbeamte, um die Hintergründe und Auslöser für die maßlose Aggression des Täters zu beleuchten. Bis zum Gerichtsprozess und der Anhörung von Gutachtern, die sich eingehend und in vielen Gesprächen mit dem Täter beschäftigt haben, bleibt das zu einem guten Teil ein Stochern im Nebel. Die schnelle, einfache Erklärung gibt es nicht, kann es nicht geben. Zumindest keine seriöse.

Die Macher von Internet-Blogs und Seiten wie «Politically Incorrect» werden das anders sehen. Nach eigenen Angaben ist PI inzwischen eines der erfolgreichsten Weblogs in Deutschland und zählt täglich zehn- bis zwanzigtausend Besucher. Auf die Fahne schreibt sich das Organ unter anderem, «proisraelisch» und «proamerikanisch» zu sein, obwohl von den Werten, für den diese Demokratien eintreten, in den Beiträgen nicht viel zu finden ist. Er kämpfe einzig gegen das «politisch korrekte Gutmenschentum», lässt PI-Gründer Stefan Herre auf seinen Seiten wissen. Und diese Form des vorauseilenden Gehorsams dominiert in der Überzeugung des ehemaligen Lehrers aus Bergisch-Gladbach auch die gängigen Medien, die sich in einem Akt der Selbstzensur nicht trauen würden, «Tabuthemen» anzurühren. Oder anders: Mit ihm und seinen Mitarbeitern gegen die weltweit islamistischen Tendenzen anzuschreiben, statt an Dialog und Integration festzuhalten.

Verbreitung falscher Tatsachen
Entsprechend lösen sinnvolle Medienregeln wie die, die Nationalität eines Täters nicht zu nennen, wenn sie nichts zur Sache tut, bei den PI-Machern Zorn aus, der bis zur bewussten Verbreitung falscher Tatsachen führt. So wurde von den Schreibern aus dem Fürther Jugendlichen schnell mal ein «Südländer» gemacht. Als die Staatsanwaltschaft später von einem «in Fürth geborenen und aufgewachsenen Jugendlichen» spricht, wird aus ihm ein «Russlanddeutscher», obwohl es auch dafür keinen Anhaltspunkt gibt. Damit war PI allerdings nicht allein. Auch die Macher von DCRS, einem auf den ersten Blick seriös erscheinenden Boulevardmagazin mit Geschäftssitz im kalifornischen Torrance, sprachen unter Bezug auf nicht näher definierte «Polizeikreise» «exklusiv» von einem Täter mit «türkisch-arabischem» Hintergrund. Die Tragweite solcher «Nachrichten» spiegelt sich in den Leserkommentaren wieder.

Ihre erschütternde Botschaft ist bei DCRS wie auch bei PI die gleiche: Wir haben es ja schon immer gewusst, solche Taten können nur Ausländer begehen. Kurze Glaubensbekenntnisse, hinter denen Menschen stehen, die bestenfalls bemüht ironisch über die «Kulturbereicherer» wettern, die jetzt gerade in Köln eine Moschee errichten wollen. Entsprechend hetzt PI-Macher Herre aktuell in zahlreichen Beiträgen gegen den Kölner Oberbürgermeister Fritz Schramma und wirft im gar «Verfassungshochverrat» vor.

Blindwütige Islamophobie
Das Fatale: Im Gegensatz zu den Hunderten eindeutig rechtsextremen Seiten im Web tarnt sich in den Beiträgen von PI die Fremdenfeindlichkeit als Kampf für die Toleranz, als «Aufklärung». Die Verbreitung der Botschaften geschieht in der Vorstellung der Macher gleichermaßen zum Besten all jener «Verblendeten», die nicht an vorderster Front gegen eine angeblich ständig fortschreitende Islamisierung Europas kämpfen.

Um die zu belegen schreckte PI in der Vergangenheit auch nicht vor der Verbreitung von Schauermärchen zurück. Die Falschmeldung, dass englische Banken aus falsch verstandener Rücksicht auf Muslime keine Sparschweine mehr verteilten, schaffte es auch dank PI im Internet vom Mythos zur Tatsache zu mutieren. Dass aus solchen Geschichten die Legitimation für einen undifferenzierten Hass wird, die den im Stadtpark grillenden Türken ebenso trifft wie den religiös motivierten Selbstmordattentäter und sich dazu eignet, jegliche Form des Ausländerhasses zu schüren, ist den Schreibern offenbar egal.

Mit dem Hinweis, als Betreiber eines Blogs im Sinne der Meinungsfreiheit nur bedingt für die Einträge in den Kommentarleisten verantwortlich zu sein, lassen sich die Hände trefflich in Unschuld waschen - und gleichzeitig die Zugriffszahlen mit einem einfachen Weltbild in Schwarz und Weiß oben halten.

Jane Kelly lives in Lake Chinook, Oregon were she is a process server and does some side work for a P.I. Bobby Reynolds murdered his young family and has been missing the past 4 years. Jane is hired to speak with Bobby's father and discover if he knows where Bobby is. Plus her ex-boyfriend's back in town (who just happens to be Bobby's childhood best friend) and Jane's mom has arranged for her to take in a distant relative pug named Binky.

I have mixed feelings on this one. It was ok. The setting confused me. Lake Chinook sounded sorta like Lake Oswego (a Portland suburb & where the author lives) but with her descriptions and mix of real and fake places and street names I just couldn't place it in context, which bugged me. Also the plot was complicated and I had trouble keeping the numerous secondary characters straight. Plus I did know who had done it before it was revealed and that always bugs me. However, it was a first novel and I would be tempted to read the second book in the series.

In effetti, dal momento stesso in cui tentiamo di figurarci pigreco con un numero finito e non in quanto entità, lo perdiamo di vista e siamo costretti ad accontentarci di concetti numericamente simili. Questa non é solo un'osservazione fine alla Matematica, ma ha delle ricadute enormi, ad esempio, nella Fisica.

Per dare un'idea: pensiamo di avere un tavolo di biliardo con sopra diverse palle. Per descriverlo matematicamente in ogni istante, dobbiamo fornire la posizione di ciascuna pallina (su un piano come quello del biliardo, sono sufficienti due numeri), e le loro velocità (altri due numeri ciascuna). Avendo tutti questi valori in un dato istante, possiamo (conoscendo le leggi fisiche che descrivono gli urti e l'attrito dell'aria) conoscere il "futuro" delle palline, ovvero la maniera in cui evolveranno. E qui cominciano i problemi.

Supponiamo di memorizzare i numeri in un computer con un'approssimazione di due cifre decimali: possiamo quindi dire, ad esempio, che all'istante iniziale la pallina 1 si trova, lungo l'asse delle ascisse, nella posizione 2,81. Questa, pero', é già di per sé un'approssimazione notevole: le palline in posizione 2,814 e 2,809 ricadranno nella denominazione "pallina in posizione 2,81", proprio perché per noi i decimali dopo il secondo sono virtualmente inesistenti. Naturalmente, queste palline daranno vita ad evoluzioni iniziali estremamente simili, a tratti praticamente identiche. Dopo un po', pero', queste cominceranno a scontrarsi con altre palline, ciascuna con un suo margine di errore, che colpiranno a loro volta altre palline, facendo aumentare, più o meno rapidamente, l'errore complessivo. Si giungerà in un punto in cui le varie palline che inizialmente abbiamo considerato identiche hanno provocato evoluzioni estremamente diverse, e noi saremo nell'impossibilità tecnica di scegliere quella giusta: il sistema é diventato caotico, imprevedibile (ma non casuale, attenzione)!

La prima soluzione che puo' venire in mente per questo problema é abbastanza banale: comprare un nuovo computer. Purtroppo, qualunque somma di denaro decidessimo di investire, avremmo sempre un computer in grado di memorizzare numeri approssimati: tutti i computers del mondo, messi assieme, non basterebbero a memorizzare un singolo valore con decimali infiniti!

Qualcuno che macini un po' di Matematica, pero', potrebbe pensare ad una seconda soluzione, decisamente migliore: scrivere delle equazioni che descrivano l'evoluzione del sistema e che siano in forma chiusa, ovvero in cui possiamo calcolare qualunque valore prescindendo dai valori precedenti (una funzione del tipo sin(x), ad esempio, é in forma chiusa, mentre una funzione "sommatoria fino all'ennesimo valore, più uno" é in forma aperta). Escludendo il fatto che questa funzione dipenderebbe comunque dalle condizioni iniziali, é stato dimostrato che, in sistemi con numerosi corpi interagenti (nel caso tridimensionale, ne bastano addirittura tre) trovare queste equazioni chiuse é matematicamente impossibile! Dobbiamo accontentarci di approssimazioni.

Questo ha dei risvolti notevoli anche in campo filosofico: dobbiamo, sembra, rinunciare alla possibilità di conoscere l'evoluzione fino ad un momento imprecisato nel futuro di un sistema che, in sé, é completamente deterministico!
