OSNews doesn't really do games all that often, but for some, we I make an exception. We're a few days late, but last week PopCap Games, makers of Bejeweled, released its sequel to one of the craziest and most addictive games ever made: Peggle. The sequel is called Peggle Nights, and is basically more of the same. Peggle users around the world, rejoice! Another opportunity to become a Peggle Grand Master!

Peggle is a fairly simple game, with simple graphics and lots of of candy cane colours, unicorns, fire fighting dragons, talking flowers, and a whole lot of other things that make schoolgirls giddy. The objective is straightforward, but extremely addictive. The playing field is covered in pegs, and the goal is to destroy all orange pegs using a limited set of balls shooting from a cannon atop the playing field. The ball will bounce back and forth from peg to peg, until it drops off the playing field at the bottom of the screen. A bucket moves from left to right and back again across the bottom; if a ball drops in the bucket, it is reclaimed and added to the ball queue.

You play any of 10 (or in the case of Peggle Nights, 11) sunshine fluffy bunny green meadows characters, each with its special power up, such as a ball of fire that shoots through pegs instead of bouncing off them, or a ghost ball that comes back atop after falling off. When you're done with adventure mode, you can play any of the challenges - and the challenges are the real deal of the game. Adventure mode is relatively easy, and is just a training mode for these challenges. The further you go, the more impossible they get.

Peggle is a game that vomits sunshine all over you, and the sound effects will haunt you in your sleep. The game is a total productivity killer, and should actually carry the 'nsfw' tag; the original Peggle had me stuck on a challenge once, and I didn't leave my computer for basically two days until I finally managed to complete it - leading to an almost 2001-esque triumphant primal roar.

Both the original Peggle (PC, Mac, iPod, etc) as well Peggle Nights (PC only) are available from PopCap for only USD 19.95. Don't buy this if your marriage is already under tension.

In Japan, many men launder many millions of yen every year for the Yakuza by pinging small balls around pachinko machines. Until the ban on smoking in pachinko parlours was introduced a few years ago, these places were packed with the same societal dregs that you'd see in your average small town arcade, pushing their last few pounds into a fruit machine in the misguided hope that they might actually get out more than they put in. But we in the west have never got Pachinko. We have pinball, we have penny pushers, and, more appropriately, we have Peggle, the absurdly addictive but really-not-very-deep game from Popcap. It's western pachinko, and I'll have no arguments.

I'm not going to go into huge depth in this review because I can't; if ever a game deserved the 'Oh No! More...' prefix it's Oh No! More Peggle Nights. It's Peggle with one new character, and blocks which occasionally rotate. There's nothing vastly new about it, unlike, say, the surely life changing evolution of Puzzle Quest.

Weirdly, all I could think of when playing Peggle Nights was that Popcap needs to get working on Peggle 2. Now. There are aspects of the multiplayer game especially which don't hang right with me, from the vast advantage you get for going first, to the limit of two power ups per game. More also needs to be made of the special blocks; a 'point boost' block is fine, but how about something, y'know, more interesting?

The challenges (which you'll be left with after ploughing through the admittedly short single player campaign) are slightly more interesting, sometimes scraping the edge of impossibility a little too closely. It's often blind luck -- favourable positioning of the green and purple pegs -- that leads to victory. Alright, it's a casual game, but it's one that actually asks for a little skill; why not reward those players who have it in droves with a structure that's winnable every time? Concessions have been made (the 'Extreme Fever' bit seems much more friendly, for example) but you're still at the mercy of chance.

It's not the original, because that filled me with the sort of gaming adrenaline which came back only in a weak, level pack style effusion of love here. Is it bad? No. It's Peggle, that wouldn't be possible. But there's a way to go, and Popcap should follow that road before it's inexplicably full of other, free Peggles with extra-wide tyres and humorous bumper stickers.

8/10

Now that I have a chance to break away from editing videos...it's time to start throwing away my time. I usually do that playing video games. I am a hardcore PC gamer, so strategy games, RTS, simulations are my thing. Now it's been a long time since I found a game that made me say WTF - 5 hours have passed by already. Sim City 4 did that to me for many months and Command & Conquer did that as well but now I have found a new game - its called Peggle.

[caption id="attachment_327" align="aligncenter" width="495" caption="Extreme Fever with Peggle Deluxe - Try It"][/caption]

Now you hardcore gamers out there - calm down - I really haven't lost my mind. This game is addictive. The object of the game is really simple - use a bouncing ball and get rid of the orange balls and blocks. Along the way are special bonuses, points and hints. Seems simple but the upper levels are hard and makes you want to keep trying. I found myself moaning when I missed a shot by inches (replayed in slow motion complete with crowd noise) to screaming "yes" when I hit that lucky shot. The music is catchy, the graphics simple but clean and the humor infectious.

How did I learn about peggle? I listen to the PC gamer podcast all of the time and I swear those guys were always talking about the game. I didn't really give it any thought until I got tired kicking alien but in Supreme Commander and wanted to try something new. So I loaded up my Steam account, played my free demo of Peggle and after 30 minutes I was hooked.

So today I have checked my email, check my calendar, clear up my hard drives and now it's time to waste away my day...peggle anyone

Oh hear's a video to give you an idea. This guy must be a queen - where in the hell did he get that song from to put in his video.

Yes! it's finally out! The new Peggle has just been released on Steam and on Popcaps website and is be prepared for release on many other platforms. If you don't know what Peggle is click here and play it for free on their website.

The new Peggle apparently doesn't add much except new levels. This is fine because the game is so great, it doesn't need to be changed! The cheapest place to get it at the moment is Steam where you can download it for $20. Peggle Nights will soon be released on other platforms such as iPod, iPhone, Xbox 360, Mobile Phone and more!

I'm really old school, you know. I remember loading up games on the Spectrum which I had absolutely no idea how to play -- still have absolutely no idea how to play, in fact -- just because I had them. I'd endure minutes of screeching, unquenchable cassette tape scream just so I could fiddle with Beachy Head or some such title at the limited level my five-year-old brain could handle.

I think this is the only reason I consider myself hardcore. It's legacy, it's tenure. I slot myself in as some gaming professor just because I've been hanging around the faculty long enough to trick fresh-faced youngsters into thinking I'm one of the staff.

So it is with trepidation and a slightly uncomfortable feeling in my gut that I announce this: Peggle Nights is, so far, as brilliant as the first. I know RockPaperShotgun has beaten me to the punch with the Hardcore Gamer Peggle Lovin', in an ironic-but-not-really way.

But Peggle's a casual game. I shouldn't like casual games. I shouldn't have enjoyed Puzzle Quest either. I'm hardcore. Aren't I? Or has my brain finally gone soft enough that I'm joining the casual crowd?

I think that's why this blog is here. I haven't finished a game in years, even though I've spent thousands of pounds on buying the things. By having somewhere to vent about them, perhaps I can give myself a reason to stay hardcore. After I've finished playing Peggle Nights, of course. Did I mention it was quite brilliant?

Popcap.

Popcap.

Just another giant company who is out to get money.

Advertisements and a billion 10-20 dollar games, which involve one common mechanic throughout the game, and with nearly all levels the same. Casual games, maybe 3 hours, tops, to get out of the game. They are famous for "Bejeweled", which is yet another declined game found on some cell phones.

Why do I bring up talk about a company that doesn't care about anything other than money?

Because they produce something awesome every once in a while, although it is rare.

Peggle Deluxe is what I am talking about. The game is so addicting, yet casual, and worth its money. Over 100 levels of Plinko, with a variety of characters to play as to produce new effects and powers. Each level has its own art, a nice 800x600 graphic image that relates to the levels pattern in some way. Although I don't care much for the image, it makes me think, they actually spent time to produce something for once, and the outcome is well worth their efforts.

The sad part is WHO made it.

The giant company that has already millions of dollars from their millions of declined games. Because of that main reason, they don't deserve my money, and because of such I won't buy their products.

However, Valve on the other hand, is a smaller company with less games. But they don't care so much about the money as they do care about the product and customers.

Which brings me to a somewhat unrelated topic; Piracy.

piracy is bad in some sense, but in others, it isn't a big deal.

Valve doesn't care much about piracy, they just want everyone to have a good time. That is why they don't spend their time making sure fire ways to prevent theft, instead, they spend their time stopping hackers and the such from ruining online gameplay and disatisfieing those who actually paid money.

In short, I would like to say that if you are going to pirate, know who you are pirating.

if it's a nice company that cares, make sure you buy their products. Don't ruin them by doing something to stunt them in making everyone happy.

If it is a bad company, go ahead. Those money-grabbing fags out there who just want money and don't care about their customers deserve to be pirated.

I do not suggest pirating no matter what however, since this is the internet and there are rules I have to follow.

anyway, what I was going to originally post;

there is a new peggle game out, if it had achievements I would buy it, but instead, I guess I miss out on the fun...

Peggle has what it takes to be a new favourite of mine: not least the insane Ode to Joy madness that happens when you hit all the orange pegs and enter "EXTREME FEVER!!!" mode. Which is nothing compared to the triumphant awesome insanity of "ULTRA EXTREME FEEEEVEEEERRRRR!!!!". Just look at this video for a tiny idea of the awesomeness.

After hearing of a few of my friends playing Team Fortress 2, I decided to get Steam, hoping to try out Team Fortress 2. There wasn't a demo, but since I had money for the first time in a while, I bought the Orange Box. TF2 didn't work at first, but after an hour of searching through various drivers on the internet, I successfuly got it working. It's a great game, and so is Portal and Peggle. I have yet to try and of the Half-Life games, but I will as soon as I'm done with the others.

I also just bought the id Super Pack, even though I have some of the games already, but more than half of them I don't. I'm going to add a Steam widget somewhere here.

This should explain why I haven't made any posts in a while.

I love playing Peggle. PopCap did a great job making a fun and addictive game. It's the definition of a casual game. Play with one button. Play as long as you'd like. Easy to learn, hard to master. It is genius.

BUT they made a strange choice for the victory music. After you've cleared the last orange target peg, part of the Ode to Joy from the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony plays. It's a magnificent piece of music, perhaps one of the world's greatest composer's greatest achievements.

The problem is, it gets old. Really old. The first few times you hear it, you can't help but laugh. Such a grandiose piece of music for such a silly cartoon-y game, those goofballs! But, like I said earlier, this game is addictive. You're going to play through several levels in one sitting. Then more after you get some pesky work out of the way. Then more... and more... and then the Beethoven has worn out its welcome. Something that's fun and different at first (Beethoven is pretty different for a casual game, or most games) but then wears out its welcome is just a novelty. And novelty is not what you want for such an important part of the game.

You want to be rewarded when you clear a level. Sure, at first it's a fun reward. But there are a few properties of this music choice that make it unsuitable for prolonged use. 1) The choir is singing very loudly, some would say it sounds shrill. Yeah, it's definitely shrill. 2) The quality of the audio file itself is pretty bad. It almost sounds clipped. 3) The music itself is very old and has been heard too much already in many other contexts.

The Ode to Joy is brilliant when heard in context, in the last long movement of a huge symphony. It's rewarding in and of itself. When you take it out of its context, you are playing with fire. How do you do it justice? Well, that's what gives the player the initial chuckles. The jarring juxtaposition of genius and silliness. But, the genius soon loses out to the silliness and we need to hear something else.

I tested out a couple other pieces of music. The theme to Star Wars had a similar problem, though it was much more tolerable because it has no choir. What I finally settled on and have loved hearing through the hundreds of levels I've played (I'm one level away from the top level possible... man, I played Peggle a lot) is part of Buckbeak's Theme from Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. It is not as bombastic as Beethoven's piece but still says "victory!" in its own more relaxed, majestic way.

If you want to try your own music, just convert whatever music you want to use into OGG and rename it "odetojoy.ogg" and place it in the directory "Peggle\music".

As for the rest of the audio in Peggle, I enjoyed it. The in-game music is nothing to write home about. Some bland tracks, but it keeps out of the way (see Seinfeld post below). The sound effects are very good and the got the most important sound just right, the bouncing on the pegs. They do their trademark rises in pitch after successive peg hits. Very nice.

Anyway, now you know my big gripe with the game. Now you should go play the game if you haven't yet. I don't know what I'm going to do if the rumors are true about Peggle coming to DS, by the way. I will play through it again.

Steam hasn’t been entirely to blame for my lack of updating, or my lack of playing City of Her

Steam hasn't been entirely to blame for my lack of updating, or my lack of playing City of Heroes, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Dungeon Runners, Exteel or any of my consoles. Or Roleplaying, for that matter. It's been a distraction, yes, but a sorely needed one.

My Dad was recently diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. He's been unable to eat much, and I've watched him waste away over the course of several months. He's 60 years old, but he's never -looked- his age, never slowed down or 'got old'. Until now. A biopsy of the ulcer revealed it had malignant cells in.

Not quite. Seeing as it's a tumour. My father was admitted to hospital yesterday, and he's currently in theatre now, having the tumour and 1/3rd of his stomach removed, at least. The surgeon has to see what the situation is when he begins the procedure. Luckily a CT scan has showed that it hasn't spread to any major organs, and they'll have to do further biopsies on the removed tissue to see what stage and type it is.

I've been trying to get on with things, and look after my mum who is obviously upset by the whole thing, and never really cried about it. Worried, sure, but cried? Not until last night. Odd what it is that sets you off really, and it's relating to gaming, promise.

I had spent most of the evening downstairs keeping my mum company, and wandered back up to play some Team Fortress 2 on the Hamphsire Heavies server, that my friend Syracuse plays on. And I sucked. I completely and utterly sucked more than usual. No matter how hard I tried and pushed myself, I just ranked bottom and was cannon fodder each time. I was getting more fustrated and upset that I just couldn't do anything, and Sy asked those fateful words: 'Are you alright?'

Of course, I burst into tears at that point. Ever notice that you can kind of keep going until those words get asked, and suddenly the floodgates burst. I mentioned what was up, and logged out of the game to just have a bit of a cry. We got chatting on MSN, and the subject of ways to keep me occupied came up. Noticing that I'd been playing that Peggle Deluxe demo, I mentioned that it was the simple pleasure of geeky life, and that I've been avoiding buying it because I'd get addicted.

Syra went quiet for a minute or so, and suddenly a Gift notification popped up on Steam.

Yup, a copy of Peggle Deluxe.

Of course, I was in tears again, but of a different sort. I was also rendered pretty speachless for a while, but managed to regain coherency. So...

Thank you, Sy, not only for the game (which is pretty damn distracting), but just the gesture in whole coming just when I needed something to pick me up. Something I hope to be able to repay you in kind someday.

Thanks as well to my other friends, who've had my dad in their thoughts, and to one who's going to be taking the afternoon off work just to see me when I head to London on Tuesday for an appointment.

I don't know what I'd do without you all, and I don't want to know either. :)

To wrap it up in a gaming kind of manner... as Sy said to me last night, isn't it amazing how you can tell if something is up with someone simply through their playstyle and ability?

And for a geeky perspective on things:

Flowers are beautiful and nice, but die in a few days when cut. Chocolates are delicious, but once they're eaten, they're gone. A geek's gift, whether hardware, software or other will last for years.

So, given the choice of a bouquet of roses and a bouquet of assorted cables for my PC?

I'd take the cables. I might even put them in a vase.

I click, my eye twitching as the tiny marble ricochets of a peg and then rebounds towards the final

I click, my eye twitching as the tiny marble ricochets of a peg and then rebounds towards the final orange. My fists clench, as the camera zooms right in on the marble. It all goes slow motion as they collide. Suddenly the screen explodes in colour, particles flying everywhere as "Ode To Joy" blares out of my speakers. I jump to my feet and scream in relief! I'd been on that level for ages...

Peggle is one of many casual games developed by Popcap and distributed on Steam. While everyones heard of Bejeweled (an extremely popular internet game, so popular my cousin actually bets on it through yahoo games) Peggle is mainly only known to those who bought the Orange Box and got Peggle Extreme for free. Either way, if you've heard of it before but dont have it, go buy it! Now! From here! However if you've never heard of this at all, then read on...

Peggle is a mix between pinball, and those games where you drop balls past the little pegs to get points at the bottom. That doesn't really make sense does it? Thought not. Well, lets put it this way. Your given a a board of "Pegs", colored circles that are scattered across the screen (normally in conjunction to the spectacular artwork behind it) and you have to fire marbles to hit all the orange pegs. Once you hit all the orange pegs you progress to the next board and do the same. There is a distinct difficulty curve, with the last four levels becoming a swearathon for those who are easily frustrated (i.e Me) but still maintaing the ease of other casual games. I cleared this in around 6-7 hours (which is longer than Portal) but shorter than most puzzle games. It's certainly strengthened by the unlockable challenge levels, but to be honest there's no real reward for completing them and with some of them bordering on the impossible I didn't play them all to completion.

Where Peggle manages to shine however is with it's characters, unlocked by progressing through the story mode. Each one of these wacky and quite frankly bizarre characters (of which there are ten) have there own special "power". For example for the first character, a unicorn named Bjorn would you believe, has super guide, a Puzzle Bobble style help guide for securing those tricky orange pegs while the dragon Lord Cinderbottom has a fireball that burns all pegs in it's path. Although it may not seem it at first, each of these powers are balanced and extremely helpful considering which level your playing, although the Egyptian cat character may be an exception.

As well as the powers, there are other ways of securing more points as well as additional marbles (you only start with ten). At the bottom of the screen is a small "Bucket", when your ball falls in you get it back. Also, considering how many pegs you hit in one turn you can get up to three balls, depending on how may points you gain. There's also a small purple peg, that when hit gives you a point boost.

Features of the game include an "Adventure" mode, which basically is just what the whole game has to offer in terms of levels and characters, a "Duel" mode which is great fun as you argue whether or not this game comes down to skill or luck (it's normally luck when they win, I find), a "Quick Play" mode which is just replaying the levels to gain high scores as well as the "Challenge" mode that was mentioned earlier. You can also save your replays of levels if you wish, but personally I don't really see the attraction..

In conclusion, I can only say this. Peggle is an exceptional puzzle game but wont be winning any awards for anything else, It's a great time waster, but you'll be bored after a week or so and it's certainly not worth £10 in shops. Get it from Steam if your interested, or buy the Orange Box and get Peggle Extreme for free. It's exactly the same, just with only 10 levels and a valve twist.

Now If you'll excuse me, I still have some Peggle fever.....

Instead, a new study from East Carolina University says you should fire up a casual game. And since gaming company PopCap underwrote the research, scientists recommend the beneficial effects of the company's Bejeweled 2, Peggle and Bookworm Adventures titles. Subjects' moods were broken out into six categories: psychological tension, anger, depression, vigor, fatigue and confusion. The study found that:

Peggle had the greatest affect, improving mood by 573% across all study subjects - with Bejeweled 2 at 435% and Bookworm Adventures at 303%.

Normally, I'd be dubious about these results, since PopCap paid for the study. But I can tell you from first-hand knowledge that Peggle in the office = fun (except for that stupid car level). We used to hold Peggle tournaments when I worked at Shockwave.com, and that was the happiest place on Earth.
OK, I'm exaggerating a bit. But Peggle is actually a great spectator "sport" and this research reinforces the theory put forth by Adrian Gostick and Scott Christopher in their book "The Levity Effect: Why it Pays to Lighten Up." You can listen to the authors talk about their findings over at Marketplace.org.

Are for those Peggle faithful, check out this 13,000,000+ (yup, that many zeros) point shot:

Due to hectic life, the blogging had been delayed. My apologies.

For this post, I decided to do a review of sorts. The review for today will most likely be short and sweet. The game being reviewed is Peggle a puzzle game that can best be described as "Breakout" meets "Plinko" from the Price is Right. The purpose of the game is that there are blue pegs and orange pegs (also green and purple, but I'll get to that in a moment, keep your pants on). In order to beat a level, you must hit all of the orange pegs. You have ten balls to do this in. Sounds simple right? Well, yes and no. Some of the levels come across as incredibly easy, and are easy to beat on one try. However, as you get later into the levels, things become far trickier. Parts of the level begin to move, which adds a new dimension into the game. Now, earlier I mentioned green and purple pegs as well. The purple peg - with each shot, the purple peg moves to a different location. In short, it is simply worth more points. That's it. The green peg is what is interesting. There are different "characters" in the game, which during adventure mode you get to play as. Each one has a special ability. The green peg lets you use this ability, and there are two per level. My personal favorite - Zen Ball. Zen Ball is the last one you get to use. Basically, what it does is line up your shot, and then say "No, this shot is better, you're taking it." It makes minor adjustments to make your shot a whole lot better. All of the power-ups have their advantages, but that is just my favorite.

Now, the "Adventure" part of the game is still fairly quick to beat. There are 55 levels in adventure mode, which can be completed rather quickly (I think I did them all in an afternoon). Hearing this, you might be thinking "Well what's the point Pitt Geek, it sounds like a really short game!" Wrong. After beating the Adventure part of the game, there are challenges to play. I will openly admit that I am still stuck on these challenges. There are tons of them, and they are rather difficult. Many of them require getting a lot of points, which requires earning many "Style Points" (getting points for doing cool shit).

So if you are looking for something to be a great distraction for quite a long time, this geek recommends Peggle. Go play.

END NOTE: It should be noted that this is a very frustrating game. It is the primary source of my swearing nowadays. Just a warning.

Peggle Extreme (lnk). Darmową oczywiście, bo inaczej bym jej nie pobrał. Chodzi o Peggla utrzymanego w stylistyce Half-Life'a 2, Team Fortress 2 i Portala (czyli sympatyczną reklamówkę The Orange Box). Widać to od samego początku - jednorożec z headcrabem na głowie w menu głównym to wyraźny sygnał, że nie ma się do czynienia z normalną grą. Tła plansz przedstawiają m.in. Vortiguanty, działka z TF2, Companion Cube'y i inne.

Hey, Frayed Wire readers! This is a review Josh made on his old site, but is now being moved here!

Peggle Extreme is a quirky puzzle game packaged with the PC version of The Orange Box. It’s not a full game at all - instead, it’s only 10 levels long. Fortunately, the package gives you a good idea of how the real Peggle games are, and its Orange Box theme is fun and interesting.

For Peggle amateurs, I’ll explain how the puzzle series works. There are a set of dots on the playing screen. Most are blue, but some are orange. The goal is to hit all of the orange dots with a metal ball you launch onto the stage. If you hit a dot, its color will brighten, but the dot won’t disappear until your ball falls off the bottom of the stage. Because of this, the player is forced to strategize and plan where they want to shoot their ball, which will bounce off of the dots. Certain dots work as power-ups, giving you abilities like a bounce-tracker (see the exact path your ball will take), and score-boosters. There weren’t a whole lot of power-ups in Peggle Extreme, but there are many in the real Peggle games.

Each level consists of a background image and dots following the image. For example, on the level consisting of Weighted Companion Cubes (from Portal), the dots surround the cubes, making rectangles for you to shoot at. The Orange Box theme is followed well, and gives equal attention to each of the games on it. I especially like the Portal levels, where you can shoot your ball into the titular blue and orange portals. Also, upon completing (or losing) a level you’ll hear a voice from one of the Orange Box games. A Team Fortress 2 Heavy might yell “Oh NOOOOO!!!” in that thickly accented voice of his, or after a more positive outcome, the humorous computer voice from Portal might assure you, “Once again, excellent work.”

This game is a bit hard to describe in writing, so I’m not sure if I’ve been clear enough. Watch this video to get an idea of what it’s like:

I have to judge this for what it is - a free extra. I won’t be taking points off because “it’s too short.” Even so, it’s not perfect. The core concept itself is incredibly simple and not nearly as complex as superior puzzle games such as Tetris or Meteos. The ball mechanics are a bit off as well. They way they bounce can be unpredictable, making things unnecessarily difficult at times. Quite ironic, isn’t it? A game based off of Valve titles with unrealistic physics…

In the end, it’s free, so there’s really no reason to want to reject this. This review is just here for the Steam users who have that sitting in their “uninstalled” section, wondering what the heck Peggle Extreme is.

Final Score: 7 out of 10

Just when I thought I knew Half-Life company Valve, they reveal a side of their gaming profile I see

Just when I thought I knew Half-Life company Valve, they reveal a side of their gaming profile I seemed to have missed. In a recent NVIDIA PC Gamer exclusive from Valve, 4 add ons where made available on Steam for free. The pack of freebies includes Oddly named and weirdly addictive ball blasting game Peggle Extreme, Portal: First Slice, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast add on, and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. Though not all the downloads have been completed on my Steam account, I'll update you on what I do know of these titles. Peggle Extreme is an update of an older game, Peggle, duh, where you control a turret that launches a ball at multi colored pegs and so on to finish each level. You see many Valve backgrounds and voices, from the Combine shouting, to the dieing sounds Gordon Freeman makes, to APERTURE Science Glados voice over, the infamous G-Man even makes an appearance. Portal: First Slice is the supposed demo of the amazing dimensionally bending game with the robot boss who's missing a few screws (and some cake). Why they'd release a demo this late but either way it works for me, I loved the game already, owning the 360 version of The Orange Box. The Half-Life 2 add ons are the basic Half-Life add ons, though one is more of online battles and the other is an expansion of the original game, they are meant for HL2 which in the end equals out to amazing gameplay and hours of play and replay ability.

On another front, my search for a way into the game biz is proving more and more of a challenge as the day goes by. Game Journalism is a tough thing to find information on, I turned up a lot that was helpful but the stuff I need to find is still yielding a negative on my radar. I try to contact game journalists who already have a ton of experience but most of the time I can never get a decent response. I post this in search that by some off chance anyone can lend me a direction to head in, to get me moving in a some what right path. Just post a comment here, or email me at gamereviewer711@yahoo.com

At this time I head off to dream my little gamer dreams and maybe get a good night sleep in. Wish me luck and may peace be with all of you. Wow, cheesy ending.

I have an anomalous trichromacy color vision deficiency (I’m green-red color blind). That doe

I have an anomalous trichromacy color vision deficiency (I'm green-red color blind). That doesn't mean I can't ever see the difference between green and red, but it does mean that I have trouble telling the difference between certain pairs of colors when they're of similar tone and saturation. Examples of such pairs would be:

Yellow/Green

Green/Red

Blue/Purple

Green/Brown

Red/Brown

Orange/Yellow

When they're of different enough tone and saturation, I can tell them apart. For example, I'd never confuse dark orange and light yellow. (Many thanks to kfredericks who's color examples I stole.)

In every day life, this "disorder" doesn't really effect me much. I'm terrible at matching clothes, but that can be mostly avoided by wearing blue-jeans and khakis, and letting my wife pick out my daughter's outfits at the store and at home. I do have trouble with traffic lights regularly, but green is usually on the bottom or the left (or is it right....I guess it can be a problem sometimes).

But when it comes to playing casual video games, a color vision deficiency can be a real pain. I say "casual" because this isn't much of a problem in action based games like Half-Life or Bioshock. There are puzzles in these types of games, but they don't usually involve colors. Every now and then an adventure game (think Myst) will throw color puzzles at me, but I always play those with my wife, so she bails us out nicely.

No, it's casual games that always get me with colors. One of my favorites is Zuma (I even have it on my mobile phone), and it unfortunately starts with yellow and green in it's color mix, and a few levels later adds a purple that looks just like blue to me. They could have made these colors have different tones and saturations and I would have been ok, or even gone a step further with different patterns (the balls do have different faces, but they can be hard to see since they're rolling, and special power-up balls lose their pattern and have to be matched by color alone) for people with even worse color deficiencies, but they didn't. I still play the game, but I often goof up the colors, especially on my little phone screen, and have to "die" in frustration,

I had kind of given up on every expecting games like these to have support for color blind people. But then I had a chance to play Peggle (came free as part of Half Life 2: Episode Two), made by PopCap Games (the same company that made Zuma), and it has a Colorblind Mode that adds a triangle to the green pegs and a plus to the purple pegs to make them easier to distinguish.

Come on PopCap, keep it up! Don't stop at adding colorblind support to new games (although way to go for setting a new standard for other companies to follow). Go back and fix some of your older, but just as popular games like Zuma.

Roughly 5% of the male population is colorblind, so the problem isn't a microscopic one. Throw in some patterns and help us out!
