AppleInsider reports that Microsoft, fed up with Apple’s “Get a Mac” campaign, is

AppleInsider reports that Microsoft, fed up with Apple's "Get a Mac" campaign, is planning a major anti-Apple advertising blitz to help build the image of Vista, Redmond's flagship OS.

This is amusing on several levels, not the least of which is the fact that a push like this is roughly a year late. And Vista has turned out to be a fairly nauseating disaster and users are begging for XP to hang around. And Microsoft has actually created a Vista SKU that's a downgrade license to XP but can still be tallied as a Vista sale. Aside from those, yes, Vista's woes are all about insufficient advertising. When in doubt, blame marketing. Is this what happens when Bill is gone?

Some key quips from the AI article:

The company's VP of Vista marketing, Brad Brooks, told attendees at a Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference on Tuesday that the next few months will see a major advertising push that promises to "free the people" through what Vista has to offer and that Microsoft wouldn't take Apple's repeated attacks on Vista reliability without a fight.

Okay Brad. Free the people? Really? Does anyone know what that even means? And what exactly prompted you to start fighting back on Vista's behalf a year into reams of bad press and unprecedented Mac marketshare/mindshare gains?

The people have been freed, and they're making personal technology choices that don't involve Microsoft.

Hate to say this, but I think it's pretty clear Vista's going down without much of a fight. If it weren't, you wouldn't have so much talk about Windows 7 already.

"You thought the sleeping giant was still sleeping, well we woke it up and it's time to take our message forward," Brooks warns Apple. "There's a conversation going on in the marketplace today and it's just plain awful. We've got to get back on the front foot."

My god. Let's see, you have a tired Pearl Harbor cliche, some management horseshit about 'taking a message forward,' a trendy reference to the modern word-of-mouth marketplace where companies don't get to tell us what to think about their products anymore, and finally some more meaningless management speak.

Hey Apple, are you listening? Are you? Well we're sick of your shit! We're sick of Justin Long and John Hodgman! We are gonna place ads, boy, and this here sleeping giant who is, um, no longer sleeping is going to grab a quick coffee and take our message forward! We're going to take it forward right up your ass!

He acknowledges, however, that Vista's rough launch has cost the company significant ground and that the ads will as much be about damage control as touting the brand. In a rare glimpse into Microsoft's own view of the launch, Brooks recognizes that Vista "broke a lot of things" and triggered "a lot of pain" in partners trying to support the newer Windows edition.

Oh, absolutely. I think this is a stellar approach. An OS with an admittedly 'rough start' that 'broke a lot of things' and 'caused a lot of pain' will yield an ad campaign that will be about 'damage control' and 'making up lost ground.'

Nothing like 'touting your brand' when you're already a few miles underwater.

I have an idea, Microsoft. Hear me out. Instead of announcing that you're going to do something, how about you just do it and dispense with the saber-rattling? Because honestly, at this point along the Vista adoption curve, nobody worth his salt is taking you seriously.

This a continuation of the project my Spouts.

Project Aims

	Create new classes and extend previous project

Tasks

1. In the Terminal cd to an appropriate folder. (In my case 'sprouts' within my 'workspace'. )

2. Enter in the Terminal:

$ sprout -n as2 AnotherProject

	A new folder 'AnotherProject' is created with all the base Sprouts files.

	The Terminal output will be listing the files created:

>> Creating new project 'AnotherProject' with as2
create  AnotherProject
create  AnotherProject/assets/skins/AnotherProjectSkin
create  AnotherProject/bin
create  AnotherProject/lib
create  AnotherProject/script
create  AnotherProject/src
create  AnotherProject/test
create  AnotherProject/assets/skins/AnotherProjectSkin/ProjectSprouts.png
create  AnotherProject/rakefile.rb
create  AnotherProject/README.txt
create  AnotherProject/script/generate
create  AnotherProject/src/AnotherProject.as
create  AnotherProject/test/AnotherProjectRunner.as

2. cd to the new folder

$ cd AnotherProject

3. Make a new Class

	See as2 bundle on the projectsprouts site.
Enter in the Terminal:

$ script/generate class utils.MathUtil

The output will be:
create  src/utils
create  src/utils/MathUtil.as
create  test/utils
create  test/utils/MathUtilTest.as
create  test/AllTests.as

This creates a suit of classes including the MathUtilTest.as Class.
The MathUtil Class is as follows:

class utils.MathUtil {
	public static var linkageId:String = "__Packages.utils.MathUtil";
	public static var classRef:Function = MathUtil;

	public function MathUtil() {
	}

	public static var serializable:Boolean = Object.registerClass(linkageId, classRef);
}

So I wanted to just take a moment to talk about Leopard, and how it’s changed the way I use my com

So I wanted to just take a moment to talk about Leopard, and how it’s changed the way I use my computer. There are a good amount of things I could mention on this subject, but there's one in particular I wanted to talk about today in particular, and that’s backing up. Before getting leopard I never backed up, for 2 reasons: 1. I didn’t have an external hard drive until right before I upgraded to Leopard 2. It was too much work. However, enter Time Machine, and I now have backups back until November 07’ (I’m typing this in July of 08’). Before then I knew that I should backup and that I’d be totally done for if my laptop were to die (considering I have a 13GB/3,000 song music library, and a few irreplaceable files). However, it never really made a large difference because I didn’t know how much having a backup would change the way I feel about them. Now that I have backups, its made me feel so secure in the way I compute. Having the security in knowing that if something were to ever happen (God-forbid) I’d be secure and within a few hours having everything back. Unfortunately, with technology it goes bad after time and hard disks fail, so if you ever have some cash that you can spare, definitely get a external hard drive (I got my 500GB Western Digital MyBook for about $129) and start backing up. It’s definitely worth it, and Time Machine makes it so that you don’t even have to do anything, it takes care of it all for you.

I hope all of you had a great 4th of July weekend, and will continue to read and comment on “Tech Talk” as I get back into the swing of things.

BTW - I might right more on how Leopard has improved my computing experience, but who knows we'll see.

According to EFiX lead engineer and CEO Vilhelm von Vnukov, things are under control and their V2 device will be released tomorrow with their V1 to follow three or four weeks later.

Tried the backing up facility in OSX Leopard today for the first time and I have to say I am impressed. It looks great and works a treat too. I wish I had had the cash to buy Leopard sooner.

I got a bit confused with the new way of working with the networking features and I had trouble with getting the applications over from the old machine, or at least until I made use of the Migration assistant wich made it as easy as pie to move things.

I have started to use Identica which is a twitter like thing and seems to work well now that Twitter is not as functional as it was. I have also looked a Plurk and I think another whose name escapes me right now. I will post on all of these as time goes by anyway so that I can build up the links back to my Wizardgold wordpress site that is Wizardgold Blog and Podcast - Betfair Trader. Identi.ca describes itself as a micro blogging site.

If you have not heard it yet don't forget to get the latest podcast downloaded and heard in iTunes. I talk about the good and bad of matched betting. It is the second podcast about matched betting. So have I made money doing it? can you lose money doing it, and what pitfalls are there if any ??

Pity Windows Vista.

Derided as the inconsequential, annoying little brother of Windows XP, for the longest time it was the great hope for renewed earnings at Microsoft and the next great step in Microsoft's march to world domination. Except in the 7 or so years it took to get out the door, the rest of the world changed.

In technology, 7 years is a lifetime. The Internet grew up all around it. MAC re-emerged as a viable alternative. Web technology with AJAX and other assorted 'Web 2.0' technology significantly matured to the point browsers and web apps and not trad client apps are where the action is. Web services paved the way for the rise of "mash-ups" and added to the decline of the paid software model. On the horizon, cloud computing and the emergence of websites such as Amazon, eBay and most importantly Google have evolved into 'web platforms' and finally we see focus shifting to mobile devices. Added to that, the computer market has gone backwards, not forwards as laptop manufacturers have started stressing smaller, lighter (and as a necessity, less powerful) computers. Not exactly the right conditions for a fatter, more memory, and processor hungry unconnected operating system.

As a product manager at Microsoft in 1998/99, how were you supposed to see all that? To be fair, the on-premise software model is increasingly looking broken or at best not appropriate in this internetworked world. The QA cost required to deliver even one incremental feature (at one of the companies I used to work for - one release took 9 weeks of new coding and then 9 months of testing to get out the door) requires product planners to invest in larger more significant releases - 3-5 years between releases. Except the rate of change and innovation on the Web is accelerating, not staying constant.

The original plan Windows Vista was very ambitious - new kernel, new filesystem called WinFS, new graphics engine called Avalon overlaid with .NET goodness (.NET ultimately being a great MSFT push with much sound and fury ultimately signifying not much...). It was a "let's pull out the stops", "let's go exponential" type of release. It was supposed to go out the door in 2004. While I was a product manager at Pivotal, I used handicap any MSFT release (and consequently the date when we would need to start supporting it) by about 18 months. For Vista, I guess I was a little too optimistic.

Over time, as the schedule slipped and competitive pressure racheted-up, all the major new components to Vista got cut - first the WinFS, then Avalon, until all we were left with was new core - Vista. Whoopy-doo. The problem was not that Microsoft didn't need to refresh the code base - it was it tried to do it all in one swoop adding significant risk to the release - the problem was it didn't really put anything into the release to sell the new OS to users except, as the Economist put it - "a prettier face." In marketing-speak Vista is all steak and no sizzle. Except you need sizzle to sell.

Compare Windows Vista to Mac OS which in the 7 years arguably underwent just as significant an amount of change - moving from System 9 to the BSD based OsX - moving from powerPC chips to standard Intel chips and then releasing a number of nice innovations to the UI including widgets et al. To be fair, because of Apple's closed system stance, it had a lot less legacy software, drivers and hardware to support and bring with it to its new releases.

So where to we go from here?

Look for MSFT to release smaller, more incremental releases in the future based on the Vista core. Look for significant investments in usability to bring the UI experience up to MAC standards. Increasingly it is looking like Vista is the Windows 2000 of its generation which was succeeded by the incrementally better but significantly more accepted Windows XP release.

More troubling is MSFT's Internet strategy from here. As predicted the browser threat that Gates foresaw back in 1996 came to pass. Unfortunately it has still not come up with a competitive response to it yet. Ozzie's Software + Services vision has yet to seriously manifest. The bigger concern is that by focusing on Windows, whether MSFT is fighting the right battles in this age of the Internet.

Better to take some of those brilliant software engineers and try to redouble its efforts in Windows Mobile where mobile space is still emerging, unconsolidated and next future of computing.

* Fixed sending of invalid XML when asked for our version information in XMPP, which effectively broke XMPP connectivity. (Bug introduced in 1.2.6)
* Improved handling of invalid XML over XMPP
* Hopefully fixed a bug which caused an XMPP contact to infinitely flip between two groups shortly after authorization

It has been a constant frustration to me in the last two years, as a person who prefers the Macintosh to the Windoze PC, that Apple had never bothered to fully implement the unicode standards for complex character sets, like those of Khmer, which requires the ability to have not only superscripts and subscripts, but also vowel signs that literally wrap around the consonant.

ជយោ!!!

So it is with great surprise that I saw that a former post I'd written, about my teacher (លោកគ្រូ) was suddenly rendering the text properly! It's not a Firefox change, either (Windows users have been able to use properly rendered text in Firefox and Thunderbird for ages) - It appears to be a proper update to Apple's own OS!

So now, I can finally start using wonderful tools like Transcriva to transcribe my interviews in Khmer, and converse with my Khmer-only friends in their own language, via Apple Mail!

@Apple អរគុណ ធំៗ!
