Chrono Trigger DS: Good, but not great

When Square-Enix put up their timer website teasing Chrono Trigger DS, I was ecstatic. Anybody who

When Square-Enix put up their timer website teasing Chrono Trigger DS, I was ecstatic. Anybody who has played Chrono Trigger knew exactly what the timer was counting down towards because of the famous clock graphic used on the site. Finally, there would be something new from the Chrono Trigger universe. Would it be a new game in the series? A 3D remake a la Final Fantasy 3 and Final Fantasy 4? Nope ... it's a port. Huzzah.

If I don't seem excited, it's because I'm not. While I can see the wisdom behind releasing a port of Chrono Trigger on the DS for Square-Enix as a business, as a fan I really wanted something else. Squeenix probably did it to expose a whole new generation of gamers to Chrono Trigger and for a nearly guaranteed grab at some cash. If CT-DS sells enough maybe it will lead to a new game in the series, and considering CT is #1 (or close to it) on my favorite games of all time list, I really can't be mad at S-E for putting this out for that reason alone. Still...I wanted the 3D remake, or some more gameplay additions, not just an extra dungeon. A port is not the type of thing you tease the way S-E did when you have legions of fans like myself waiting for something new from the Chrono Universe. This is especially after Square killed off the 3D fan remake, since this made us all think at least a little bit that S-E was making one as well.

I guess I'll get over it. Considering CT was released on the SNES almost 13 years ago, a sequel wasn't necessarily a guaranteed smash for the new DS audience. Maybe a bunch of 12 year old kids will pick up the game and be as fascinated as I was in 1995. But please, S-E, a sequel next?

I'll buy CT-DS when it goes down in price, since it's likely to start at $40, or when I have an abundance of cash and need a new handheld game. No rush for me on this one.

The two definitive editions of Chrono Trigger are of course the original masterpiece, and the remake

The two definitive editions of Chrono Trigger are of course the original masterpiece, and the remake on Playstation. The Playstation’s version was great because it included original cut scenes drawn by legendary artist and original character designer Akira Toriyama. Unfortunately, the Playstation contained an unfortunate addition, loading times. Even for the hardest of hard core fans, like me, it was nearly unplayable.

Well fans can finally rest as the new DS incarnation will include the best of both worlds. Thanks to Siliconera.com, we now know that the cut scenes are mixed together with the original game play. There is also plans for a mode to play the game as in true original form using one of the DS screens. Combine all these features with brand new dungeons and I can safely say that I can’t wait. Till then enjoy the trailer and take a trip down memory lane.

An extra note: We will import the Japanese version of Chrono Trigger DS, assuming it's released at least a month before the US version and we will get a review up as soon as possible for both versions. Look forward to it!

I've been thinking about how incredibly picky I am when it comes to which games I buy. I hardly have enough time to even play games. On top of that, I don't buy as many games as your average gamer. This has lead me to the conclusion that at the current prices for this generations consoles(even the Wii), that it is still not worth it for me to go out and buy one just yet.

I have to say, MGS4 really pushed me to my limit though. I literally was there in the store cash in hand and the only thing that stopped me was that they were out of stock of PS3's on that particular day and the deal I wanted to take advantage of ended on that day. I know it's gonna be tough everytime a new Hot Shots Golf comes out or when Final Fantasy XIII, Little Big Planet and White Knight Story all make their way into the gaming publics hands. I feel I can withstand those releases considering MGS4 was the biggest hurdle I had to overcome thus far. It was the crack rock in the pipe and I withstood it and held my ground.

All this being said, mark my words right now. I will purchase a PS3 when the next Team Ico game is released. I repeat, I WILL PURCHASE A PS3 WHEN THE NEXT TEAM ICO GAME IS RELEASED. There will be no possible way I'll be able to resist. Team Ico games are like heroin to me. I love both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus so much if I could I would melt them down and inject them directly into my veins.

I won, I finally won….. After so many months, so many try, so many failures, so many frustrations,

I won, I finally won….. After so many months, so many try, so many failures, so many frustrations, I have beaten Izuna: Legend of The Unemployed Ninja, a dungeon RPG game for the Nintendo DS.

I started playing the game around November 2007, I was beaten pretty bad and decided to play and finish other games that I got first. The hard aspects of the game that I found are:

1. The save points is only useful to take rest from the game, in other words, when you die in a dungeon, you’ll have to start all over again, not from the save point.

2. The “shut the game down when you almost die” tactic doesn’t work. Unlike many other games out there, where if you shut the game down when you almost die, you will restart at the last save point, Izuna have another gameplay rule. If you shut the game down, the game will automatically consider you commit suicide, in other words, the result is just the same as getting kill.

3. When you die, you will lose all the money, and the items that you are carrying with you. There is a way to save your weapons though, by sticking a Kikan talisman to it. This way, when you die, the weapon will be send to the storehouse (of course that is if the store house is available and not full at the moment).

4. The number of items you can carry is limited, and except for bombs, kunai, caltrops, and shuriken. Everything else is will take one place per item.

5. In the dungeons, there will be traps and monsters, there are traps and monsters attacks that will destroy your items or affect your status and weapon.

Well, there are more reasons I can put in as the game challenges, but I think these are the main ones.

After a while, I continued playing Izuna. This time, I got pretty far, finished almost all the dungeons and even defeated the last god (a dungeon boss), it was tough for me at that time. 21 floors of enemies, and there are also traps to watch out for. After beating the last god, I thought it was over, guess I was wrong though. There’s another dungeon, and another boss to beat.

A dungeon with 41 floors to go through, complete with monsters at their strongest form and many traps, the last dungeon was almost like hell to me at that time. After almost getting killed so many times, I became traumatized. I was afraid to play it again, and decided to finish some other games first.

Around end of May 2008, I have finished every game I got except for Izuna. So once again, I played the game with the aim of finishing it. I decided that defense was the main key (as I only focus on raising my attack and completely neglected my defense before), I started to raise my defense. After a while, I finally ready to challenge the dungeon again (or so I thought). With 3 swords with attack points of 300 something and 2 arm guards with defense points of over 600, I challenged the dungeon one more time. Sadly, not everything goes my way; I found myself again, at the edge of death and escaped the dungeon with frustrations and anger on my mind.

Finally I decided to go all the way; I decided to make the ultimate gears by raising my attack and defense points to 999. I started with my sword Zantetsu, after raising its base attack to 995 (after equip, the attack will be add to my own base attack of 5 points so it will still raise to max), I stick 3 Hayate talisman to it, so I can attack twice per turn. After that, I raise my Enma arm’s defense to 999, and stick 7 Mikiri and 1 Kikan to it. Now I’m ready to face the dungeon one more time.

After selecting the items that I will bring, I went into the last dungeon (of the story), Singularity. The hard works that I’ve done proved to be worth it, as also the 3 Hayate talismans that I stick to my sword. Everything was going my way; I decided not to explore each floor and made finding the stair my main objective. This is to avoid using the sword to much and break it, although I’ve brought many Fukugen talisman with me to fix my gear when needed, the talisman drain SP which will resulting in reducing my attack. But after halfway through, a monster burned one of the Hayate talisman leaving only 2. Unfortunately, 3 will be needed to launch the attack twice in one turn, and now, I can only attack once per turn. After that, every other thing was smooth and I was able to reach the 41st floor.

The fight started well, I finished other monsters first so they won’t disturb me later (during my fight with the last boss). When I saw the boss being close to me, I throw all the bombs I got at him, causing around 8000 damage. I went in front of him and attack him, but the attack wasn’t as high as I hope, seems like the boss also got a really high defense. As we were exchanging blows, the boss used his special attack that cost me half my HP and threw me all the way to the wall. I decided to heal myself by walking and ran from the boss. After healing my HP, I found myself being cornered and his special attack hit me again, unfortunately, the wall was right behind me and he was a step away only. After healing myself by using one of the 3 Orb of Divinity that I got, I exchange blows with him one more time and after that was hit by his special attack again and flown away across the room. I quickly used the second orb at tried to make space between me and him, but he was good at cornering me and hit me with that special attack one more time. Once again I was flying across the room until I hit the wall. I used the last orb and walk a few steps only to be cornered by him. Since that was the first time I’ve ever reach that far, I decided to go all the way and attack him, he return the favor with a normal attack. With fear in my mind I attack him one more time and suddenly, when I was expecting an attack I saw him falling, and at that time I knew I’ve won……

Fast forward five years and Square Enix re-releases the game once again on the Nintendo DS. Square's strategy of rehashing their library of games may be good business acumen since developing new franchises is hard work and potentially unprofitable. The company shows it's resolve at re-releasing once again this week.

Dragon Quest V tells the story of the royal Papas family across the span of three generations. The NDS conversion is based on the PS2 remake and features a 3D game world, more monsters to recruit into your party, and the possibility to travel with four party members instead of three.

The same thing happened last year and the year before that. The marketplace is fickle and it won't suffer fools more than once. With the hit rate so low year after year, it's always heartwarming when a game reaches its seventh stride with no signs of letting up.

Metal Slug 7 which is the latest release in a series that originally debuted in 1996. Six army grunts are featured in the game including Slug stalwarts such as Marco, Fio, and Eri. The soldiers run from left to right across seven horizontally scrolling battlefield stages and shoot, jump, and lob bombs at enemy forces. The end of each level is blocked by an imposing boss who is generally challenging. «NCS Game Notes»

Months ago, I wrote a positive article about Gamefly. I am now reconsidering. Today I went to their site with my son to choose new games. First, I was disgusted by the advertisements on their website. Second, my child wanted to watch a game trailer and it began playing a hidious preview for a Mature rated game called "Shutter". It is impossible to watch the game trailers without being subjected to these gross previews.

I sent Gamefly the following complaint and will be posting their response as soon as I get it:

I am a long time member and am considering canceling my account for this reason. As a mother of two children, I am disappointed with the graphic advertisements on your website. I can't even watch the game trailers with my kids because the previews before them are sometimes horrifying (shutter for example). My children like to go on Gamefly and pick out their games, but this is not possible because the advertisement pictures have BLOOD and GRAPHIC IMAGES. After this month I will be canceling if this is not corrected.

WOW!

Got done watching the conferences two nights ago on a live stream, and there is absolutely no better

Got done watching the conferences two nights ago on a live stream, and there is absolutely no better place to express my earnest disdain for E3 08; why does it feel like one of the biggest disappointments in VG history? The revelations of this year have been unprecedented in the field of utmost dissatisfaction in which one can only commend the efforts of the audience who had to painstakingly undergo this abhorrence. I'd say that any commotion caused as a result of this shitfest was well deserved, as it doesn't get anymore facepalm-worthy than this.

This is what I think of E3 08

First to take the stage were the people at Microsoft who, despite lacking the "experienced" (lol) development teams of the highly prolific gaming conglomerate Nintendo, fared better overall (further elaboration is imminent). It began with some footage of Gears of War 2, though the enthusiasm that ensued did not properly reflect the next item unveiled; the subsequent disclosure of their FABULOUS NEW XBOX LIVE AVATARS as if it were something revolutionary caused me to stop the stream and hit the hay. And before you condemn me with any prejudicial doubts, let me cite the undisputed failure that Nintendo brought to the table in their conference. It's a tad discouraging, but unsurprising given that their recent attitudes towards their products can only herald something resentful in regards to actual gamers. Taking the post-E3 results into account, I can only conclude that it is no time for anyone in the gaming industry to be liberal with their merchandise.

Putting aside the issue of online avatars, Microsoft utilised this opportunity to showcase some of upcoming titles, which is fairly orthodox given the nature of the event. But the hilarity was there when the announcement was made that Final Fantasy XIII would be released on the 360 outside of Japan, though there are rumors circling that its DVD incarnation may only hit the stores a year after the PS3. In support of this speculation were the utterly compelling advantages of Blu-Ray VS DVD, in which this image is self-indicative:

The fanboy bawing was hilarious, to say the least

Microsoft also introduced some new -- albeit fairly unexciting -- benefits of their XBox Live service; amongst these additions were (gasp) a greater catalog of digital content made possible by a collaborative effort with Netflix. Movies? I'd say this is unspectacular at best.

To reinstate: Nintendo is seriously where shit hit the fan. As reflected by their actions, Nintendo's ideal to make their products appeal to a wider audience has come to fruition; what they are losing, however, is support from long-time fans in lieu of favouring those who bought their consoles last night. No doubts that their reputation amongst the older generation is becoming even more notorious with each passing day as if the folks at Nintendo were intentionally trying to exclude the gamers that thrived on their products long past. The result is that there leaves only room for deprecation; the underwhelming line-up of their upcoming titles only conveyed a negative, thus bringing the genuineness of their speakers' exuberance into question.

From the onset, the majority of their initial time was comprised of flaunting their economical figures like a magnificent e-peen being waved around shamelessly, and from that I've gathered, the unfortunate reality is that Sony won't have anything on it as their product sales are paling in comparison. They were also highly assertive towards the more pragmatic matters by continually stating the masses of different people that their products have managed to attract. A lengthy speech was also given regarding the stature of modern gaming, citing that in order to hold the advantage in the industry, one must be be ready to... ah, you know what? I've already forgotten. Fuck it. All you need to know is that people like to smile, so Nintendo makes them smile.

Contentiously, the most "important" item unveiled at their conference was a hardware add-on designed to fit into the bottom of the Wiimote where the nunchuck is inserted, functioning specifically as a means to boost the sensitivity, allowing for more complex motions. And that was essentially it for the meaningful showcasing; amongst the swarm of disappointment was a music game in which it was impossible to lose, further accentuating the fact that Nintendo cannot quite grasp the concept of competition, and is currently only capable of demonstrating software which would appeal only to the more casual of gamers. That's fine and all, but because it remains a fact that the extent of their announcements was only limited to such novelty items, I was left disappointed. But hey! I should've seen it coming.

tl:dr:

- Where the fuck is my new 2D Metroid, huh?
- Animal Crossing is gay
- WiiMusic is for faggots

Sony's conference was probably the most impressive in relativity to its competitors this time around, and in all fairness, it does not take much more than a horrendous performance to accomplish this. Let's face it; a console's worth is primarily measured by the software available, and straying from that ideal only produces a detrimental effect. At the time of writing this, critically acclaimed titles are severely lacking on the PS3, and hardware sales reflect that entirely with 14m units sold worldwide -- that's 22.5% of the combined sales of the three current-gen home consoles; however, in defence of their sales was a fair point made: 2008 is to be the year of the PS3, and Sony claims it to be so, with various mainstream titles such as Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4 already released, which indicates more positive prospects for the future of the console.

They were rather assertive with the argument that their consoles would all follow suite of its original counterpart (the PS1) in the sense that their lifespans would breach -- or at least come close -- to the ten year margin. Heavily alluded was the fact that they were coerced into a defensive position after being shun for their meager PS3 sales thus far, which can be attributed to the lack of killer applications at launch, greatly inhibiting potential gain. Economical figures were placed in a positive light by combining the revenue generated by their three main gaming platforms, which only served to prove that the PS2 is the winning console of 2008 (with its longevity factoring in, of course).

As with Microsoft, Sony most prominently showcased the ongoing benefits of the Playstation Network which provides extensive support for digital content, such as movies, TV shows and games. Towards the end, we were briefed on what is to be a revolutionary gaming genre AKA MAG (Massive Action Game) which casts 256 players -- each with individual character growth -- separated into 8-player squads -- into the fray, designed to give birth to a new, unprecedented experience in online gaming. Sony emphasised the tactical feel of encounters within these squads and the visceral experience attained through large-scale warfare in unison. The concept sounds absolutely fantastic in theory, but as to how it's actually executed may be another story. No real expectations here.

In conclusion: Microsoft sucks, Nintendo sucks, Sony sucks. I'm sorry, but I just wanted to rant; I wasn't expecting anything from E3 to begin with, but it feels like that small ray of hope has been betrayed. And now other stuff that's been going through my mind.

Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin were both fantastic titles worthy of warranting the purchase of a DS alone. Building on the initial success of Symphony of the Night which introduced many new aspects to the series: a refined control scheme, a non-linear form of progression and many staple RPG elements such as a leveling and equipment-based system. Its predecessors gave birth to a very specific genre known as Metroidvania (or Castleroid).

I think it's no surprise that I've been eagerly anticipating the release of the third Castlevania game on the DS platform ever since its official transition from rumours and speculation to a full-fledged game-in-the-works. It also serves as a pleasant reminder as to why I'm opting for the handhelds of the modern generation as opposed to consoles as a secondary means of gaming.

The latent titles in the series are fairly rinse & repeat-esque gameplay-wise, and that never needs to change because it's about as refined as it gets. Another selling point for me is that the protagonist is a girl this time, which makes things all the more awesome.

I haven't played a DMC game since the original when I bought my PS2 way back, but from my experience, the game doesn't attempt to deviate itself from its original predecessor, and in retrospect, it doesn't need to; it's a tried and true formula that plays like it should.

I'm really having a blast with the fast-paced action this game has to offer, and the inherent emphasis on stylish combos. Fun.

And to elaborate on the game's smoothness: if it's any indication of how well it plays on my fairly average rig, I'm currently running an AMD 3GHZ dual core with an 8800gt and 2gb RAM; all are clocked at factory settings and the game rarely drops below 90 FPS on maximum settings @ 1440 x 900 (bad monitor). In most other indoor areas it runs at a near-constant 120 FPS.

And finally, new anime! The new season may be a lackluster for some, but it's met my needs and requirements for moélicious attributes. As usual, a lot of credit goes to Rie Kugimiya's efforts as Louise in Zero no Tsukaima 3, because you can't really go wrong with that ever. Koihime+Musou appears to yet again be based on the prolific piece of Chinese literature Romance of the Three Kingdoms, though to be fair I'm watching it primarily because of series's lead protagonist who has a good amount of appeal (my obsession with anime girls is beyond that which could possibly be considered healthy).

And Nogizaka Haruka's Secret. Interesting premise, and looks to be an easy show to follow.

Did I mention I couldn't bring myself to finish Kanokon? You know, I tend to adhere to the specific principle of finishing any show that I start; however, this anime's god-awful horribleness overrides that completely as I just couldn't bring myself up to complete the task. Shit anime. Very shit anime.

NINTENDO AGAIN REDEFINES GAME CONTROL, PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY BUILDING
Nintendo Unveils Wii Mus

NINTENDO AGAIN REDEFINES GAME CONTROL, PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY BUILDING

Nintendo Unveils Wii Music, Wii Sports Resort, Animal Crossing: City Folk for Wii and Exclusive Grand Theft Auto, Guitar Hero Games for Nintendo DS

LOS ANGELES, July 15, 2008 – At the E3 Media & Business Summit today, Nintendo unveiled an enhancement for its iconic Wii Remote™ controller and new games that promise to further enrich and engage players around the world. These offerings build on Nintendo’s ongoing efforts to remove the barriers between expert and novice video game players, an approach that has been instrumental in creating a paradigm shift for the industry since the advent of the Nintendo DS™ portable system and the Wii™ home console.

“Much has been reported about the ‘expanded audience’ for games, but what’s really at play is an expanded experience,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “People of all ages having fun together—whether in the same room or from remote locations—puts smiles on faces and drives millions of new players into video game entertainment.”

Wii Sports™ Resort is not just a simple sequel to one of the world’s most popular console games, Wii Sports. It is the first title to make use of another Nintendo advance, the Wii MotionPlus accessory, which plugs into the base of the Wii Remote controller to provide an incredibly realistic motion experience. Scheduled for release in spring 2009, Wii Sports Resort includes new game experiences such as Sword Play, Power Cruising on a water scooter and Disc Dog, along with the new Wii MotionPlus accessory and Wii Remote Jacket at no additional cost. The Wii MotionPlus enhances precision and player immersion for the Nintendo-pioneered motion-controlled gaming trend that has drawn millions of new people to the world of video games.

This holiday season, Animal Crossing®: City Folk lets players move into a fun community populated by quirky animals. Players can improve their community, chat with
Nintendo Again Redefines Game Control, Puts Spotlight on Community Building the locals or just spend the day fishing and collecting fossils. There is also the opportunity to catch a bus into the new urban city area. Though you’ll never see other players in the city, you can connect with them in new ways using WiiConnect24™, such as bidding on your friends’ items at the auction house or visiting the Happy Room Academy headquarters to see the top-rated player house. Another new feature in Animal Crossing®: City Folk is the ability to visit friends’ towns and chat with one another using the new WiiSpeak™ microphone. The WiiSpeak microphone is sold separately at an MSRP of $29.99 and allows Internet voice chat among Wii Friends – not just from person to person but from room to room.

Wii Music™ makes it easy for people to jam to tunes, even if they don’t know anything about music. Wii Music transforms the Wii Remote and Nunchuk™ controllers into more than 60 different instruments, including a violin, steel drums, electric guitar – even a cowbell. Players strum, shake, tap and drum along to the music in a pressure-free musical playground where there are no mistakes. They can improvise on their arrangements by skipping a note – or adding 10. The music always sounds great, but it’s up to players to come up with creative arrangements that they can then send to friends and family who have Wii Music. Those Wii Friends can then put their own spin on the arrangement and send it back and forth over WiiConnect24. Wii Music will be available in the United States for the holidays.

In the portable category, Nintendo DS remains on top. Nintendo DS has sold more than 20 million units in the United States and more than 70 million worldwide. Third-party publishers continue to take advantage of that installed base. Coming this winter exclusively to the Nintendo DS is Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, a new entry in Rockstar Games’ award-winning and hugely successful Grand Theft Auto franchise. Activision’s exclusive Guitar Hero® On Tour: Decades makes its anticipated debut this fall, as does a collection of wild and wonderful critters from Electronic Arts’ Spore™ Creatures.
