O promo recebeu 2 remixex, um do Hot Pink Delorean e outro do Killer on the Dancefloor.

Ninja Tuna.

I have a way too early shift tomorrow morning, so here I am, left to chill before having to get up at 6 AM tomorrow. Gah. Cue Mr. Scruff with a new release. Well, when I say new, it's nearly a month old by now, so you'll forgive me for not updating the Ninja Tune release list frantically. I actually did pick up Kalimba at the day of its release and the release of this one just two days later kind of just... missed me.

Anywho - as Mr. Scruff (real name Andy Carthy) takes in inspiration, he puts out music scarily similar to his stated fondness for "good, varied, soulful music". He really does have a grasp on this highly jazz-infused and indeed exquisitely soulful tuneage. His most known tune, Get A Move On, was even based on a tribute track to Charlie Parker.

This new (ahem) single features the lovely Alice Russell on the vocals, who supplies us with - yeah, you guessed it - some soulful, inspired lyrics, centered on the love for music. "Think of life without music..."

I wouldn't want to, I'd much rather listen to that chorus one more time.

MP3 › Mr. Scruff - Music Takes Me Up (Ft. Alice Russell) (Boxstr)

Normal service shall be resumed tomorrow, as Telemitry has produced a fantastic new mix, there's this guy.. and most likely something else.

'til then.

Pop Levi, raconteur, p

A version of this interview appears in the september issue of Beat Happening.

Pop Levi, raconteur, philanderer and explorer. Resembling a sonic Dorian Gray in the process of administering Purple Rain era Prince a Droogesque kicking the ex Ladytron man has been busying himself around the mansions and streets of LA concocting material for the follow up to his 2006 solo debut ‘The Return To Form Black Magick Party’. Recorded in the studio Quincy Jones used to walk Jacko through ‘Thriller’ and ‘Off The Wall’ Levi has returned with a shimmering, groove addled, pure pop dirty bomb, tracks ‘Wannamamma’ (surely a noodle advert waiting to happen) and ‘Semi-babe’ providing perfect sun dried pop intelligencia. Here he offers a little insight into the mechanics of the Levi mind.

Ok to get things started can you set the scene by telling us how this new album came into being? How did recording ‘Never Never Love’ differ to ‘ The Return to Form Black Magick Party’? From writing to recording? Was it a more arduous process or did you find this album easier/more organic?

I made 'The Return To Form Black Magick Party' entirely on my laptop whilst I was traveling in America and Europe. Recording was done on trains, in planes, in warehouses, on the top of Cathedrals, at the beach, in bathrooms, hotel rooms and tombs. I made sure to capture the first take of everything I recorded and then took the tracks to Sacramento to be mixed. Then I wanted to make a record in a very different way and so 'Never Never Love' was recorded at Westlake in Hollywood, where Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson laid down Thriller. I wanted this record to sound like Japanese toys falling in and out of love with each other so I spent four months making sure to comb almost any human element out of the music until I ended up with some kind of automatic, artificial soul.

When you approach the recording do you go into the studio with the material 100% finished or is there a lot of studio evolution?

The songs are always finished. I write the music and lyrics for my songs in my head, with no accompaniment. Years ago I thought about the idea of using the memory as a quality filter - I figured that if I could remember a song six months later then there must be, by definition, something memorable about it. And that's what I'm looking for in a song. Once in the studio, I have a very clear idea of how I want to produce the song, what sounds I want to create, how I want it to feel and how I'd like people to feel when they hear it. But, of course, there are always surprises that happen along the way and I like to keep these, too. Surprises make intention more real.

You’re quoted as saying, “It had blue skies, palm trees, and they've made some serious records here”, about LA when you visited with Ladytron and realised you wanted to live there. Did that inform your choice of studios for this record and did you feel a sense of that tradition and legacy when you were working there? There are definite Jackson and Prince-esque inflections to this record production and sound, alongside the Brian Wilsonisms.

I love Los Angeles. It's a truly weird place. And in so many ways. You'd have to spend a great deal of time here to really get to what's good about it. But ever since I was a kid it was a dream of mine to make a record in a famed Hollywood studio, and this time I did it. I don't think that any particular way of recording is better than any other - it's just makes for a different approach and therefore a different outcome. Never Never Love was made with the same microphones, the same mixing desk, the same speakers, the same piano and in the same room where they made the most successful record so far in history and that made a marked impact on how I put the record together.

The video for Semi-Babe, where you worked with Aaron Willmer & Martin Dobson, is something a little different. Can you talk me through how that came to be and what you try and achieve with videos for your songs. It reminded me of the Flaming Lips Album where you have 4 discs you are supposed to play simultaneously!

l've known Martin Dobson for a while now and when he and his cousin Aaron Willmer approached me with the idea of shooting a dual-screen video for YouTube I jumped at the chance. I love ideas like this and was sad I didn't come up with it myself! I flew to London from LA to shoot this and we completed it in an hour. I always like my videos to have a very simple premise - this way the spotlight is on the performance, the clothes, the look.

On the video note, you have always been very hands on with your YouTube site, updating regularly and you’ve talked about a desire to make films before, is that something thats still very much alive and could you see yourself moving from music into film in the future..and in what capacity? Directing? Writing? Acting?

I moved to Los Angeles to make film as well as music. I like the idea of becoming a cult film director out of a singer and music producer. It's not a move many have achieved before. I've been making short films for years now and have maybe 100 in my catalogue right now. I've been developing cinematic techniques that incorporate a DIY mentality - I'm in love with the fact that with a laptop and a point-and-shoot camera you can make cinema that people all over the world can view in their own homes with-in the time it takes to upload. That is the future of artistic freedom right there.

You once penned that blogging and the boxing career of Miles Davis were all you thought about... but what’s preoccupying the Pop mind currently?

The boxing career of Miles Davis, I told you already.

How are the songs translating live? I know you’ve been playing a few solo acoustic sets how have they been. What’s the scene like in LA right now?

Pass.

You’ve picked up some pretty eclectic celebrity fans and plaudits along the way.. do you get starstruck?

Not yet. If Bob Dylan gave me a kiss I might be for second, though.

Was there any particular music flying around or albums that soundtracked the recording process? I was listening to a Ninja Tune podcast from 2007 where you selected tracks and you were pulling out a lot of old records, old Bo Diddley, congas.

Bo Diddley, congas. These are just two of my favourite things, she said. When I was recoding 'Never Never Love' I was listening to a load of Missy Elliott and Timbaland tracks. 'Let It Bump' is a serious jam, for sure. There's a bit at the end where Timothy thinks it's ok to start rapping about how long his engineer has been mixing for and how they're sitting on something that's black on black. Get to it - crucial shit.

Outside of music what’s geting you fired up right now? What was the last movie you saw? Book you read?

'The Holy Mountain' by Alexandro Jodorowsky. If you haven't seen this film, get your ass to YouTube and watch the trailer as soon as is humanly possible. I was made in Mexico in '73 by Jodorowsky and features some truly on-it scenes. There is a moment where Christ, having been drugged by an obese transvestite, wakes up in a vast room full of life-size statues of himself nailed to the crucifixes. And another where an army of toads are dressed in full Aztec warrior uniform.

Is there anyone you would like to work with in the future or who you would particularly like to remix your work?

I want to sing with Bob Dylan in a cave on Lanzarote.

What’s the next 6 months hold in the Pop Levi universe?

Writing, playing, recording, meeting, flying, lying, feeding, listening, filming, counting and praying. Same as the last six months.

If you were to take a Pop fan record shopping this afternoon what 5 records would you not let them leave without?

1/ Sun Ra - Night Of The Purple Moon (1970)

This is one of my favourite albums of all time. No matter where I am or what I am doing, if I put this record on I am instantly a new man and in a mood that no other record can induce. It's mainly a quartet performance, which is a small ensemble for Ra, and the pieces are recorded in a very intimate production that sounds deeper and deeper with each listen. Truly music for soul dance!

2/ Herbie Hancock - Future Shock (1983)

I was turned onto the track 'Rough' the last time I was in New York City. My friend Anahit has the Future Shock vinyl in her apartment and I must have played the record for days on end. Check out the sounds on this - produced by Bill Laswell - drums and bass by Sly and Robbie and it all sounds computerised, yet so alive.

3/ R Kelly - Double Up (2007)

R Kelly has quickly become my favourite singer of the moment. I love this record more than any other record I heard in 2007. He's created his own world where he writes and produces everything himself and makes these songs about hyper-real life. Songs about ringtones, about the internet, about drinking to much Patron at the club, about being a flirt - I love all this stuff - he's like a modern Marvin Gaye, a modern Smokey Robinson.

4/ Prince - The Jewel Box

For every prince fan that has all the official albums, check this out if you get the chance. I bought this bootleg in England when I was 15 and have loved it with a passion ever since. It's a compilation of unreleased tunes from 1980-1992, but the early tunes, the first disc, is the best. Check out 'Lisa', 'Extra Loveable' and 'Purple Music' - these are classics that will have you writing to Warner Bros. to release the full quality versions.

5/ Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger (1963)

And this is as serious a pop record as you ever gonna hear! I mean, it's all here - girls, sadness, madness, cars, guns. The guitar sounds that Bo gets on here are some of the best of his career - and to think that The Beatles' first album hadn't even come out yet! Check out 'Doing The Crawdaddy' for some kind of African R&B groove-out and 'Googlia Moo' for the best song about being in love with an invalid.

For The Qemists, there’s just one way to get that killer sound – a pair of Liquid Mixes and the ISA 430…

The Qemists’ Dan & Liam.jpg

For Brighton-based production trio The Qemists, rocking the dancefloor is simply a question of creating massive, peak-time bombs… and their secret weapons of choice? Focusrite’s Liquid Mix and the ISA 430: “Focusrite have an immense reputation for high fidelity products.”

So says Liam Black, one-third of The Qemists – Drum & Bass production outfit for the legendary Ninja Tune label. They may have started out as a traditional rock band over a decade ago, but a mutual love for the exploding Drum & Bass scene of the late 90s has seen our production trio become renowned for tearing up dancefloors the world over with their three-man, 2-deck, 2-laptop set-up.

These guys know just about everything there is about getting big sound – how else do you get to live-engineer the likes of Basement Jaxx, Kano and Lady Sovereign?

And from their Brighton-based studio they’ve remixed the likes of Coldcut, Cooper Temple Clause and Roots Manuva, while their tracks have garnered huge support from such heavyweights as Zane Lowe (Radio 1), Andy C and Pendulum.

In the studio they need to be sure they’re getting the very best quality signals into their PC set-up, which is why you’ll find the legendary Focusrite ISA 430 Mk.II permanently strapped across the front end. “We needed a real workhorse for our recording setup – and what’s better than an ISA 430?” Liam suggests.

“We needed a really high quality channel strip for recording the live aspects of our album – guitars and vocals and the like… and this thing is the business – it makes cheap mics sound great and great mics sound just fantastic. But it’s not just the sound – the ISA 430’s routing capabilities are also really useful. To be able to switch the order of the processing is great – it’s amazingly versatile.

With those signals tracked to perfection, Liam turns his attention to the mixing process, and because their projects often contain around 100 tracks they reach for the Liquid Mix to process the more important parts within a song…

“We really needed more DSP, and Liquid Mix is the only thing out there that can emulate so many different modern and vintage compressor and EQ models for a sensible price. The Liquid Mixes are used as extra dynamics and EQ processing in our two PC-based production studios. It’s the quality that counts – if you use cheap EQ and compression on parts that sit high in the mix… well, that never works out particularly well, especially with vocals.”

“So not only do we have the Liquid Mix’s 32 channels of whatever vintage or modern EQ or Compression you can imagine, but there’s also the scope to make up your own processors from the best bits that you like. Really, what more could you want!?”

“So when we’re producing we’re now able to make sure that the real core elements of our songs can run through a huge choice of really high quality plug-ins. This in turn makes the whole mix process far less problematic – mainly because of the quality of the EQs and compressors, but also due to the fact that the computer isn’t taking quite as much of a hammering as it would do without the Liquid Mix!”

“We did some mixes at a top London Studio recently, and they had just about every bit of gear going. This was the first time we had experienced analogue gear on such a large scale. But ultimately we were amazed at just how close the Liquid Mix sounds when compared to the original hardware. But sometimes we thought the Liquid Mix sounded even better, especially in terms of background noise.”

I was going to write something about how I was enjoying this new album by The Bug, but how I felt there was something missing compared to Pressure, something raw, something abrasive, something a bit RRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR. On “Angry”, for example, Tippa Irie doesn’t sound that angry; perhaps about as peeved as I get when I make toast and then realise I've run out of butter. Gah! Someone needs to poke him with a stick or something. Then I read that Carl Impostume had already said something similar, if a bit harsher and a whole lot more articulate than my effort would have been. So, instead of making a completely redundant post (even more so than usual, perhaps), I’m choosing to entertain you with some photos I’ve taken at various zoos around the world - including London - over the last couple of years.

It has to be said that I reckon London Zoo is the nicest I’ve been too – they seem to look after their animals pretty well; you don’t see any demented bears pacing up and down or humping logs. Hey, that is a review, isn’t it? Does that count? Anyway, the photos: I bet you at least one of these looks like someone you know...

hello

just finished my remix of the roots manuva track Buff Nuff. Not really sure what it means, or what the lyrics are! it's probably something like..."I think you're attractive and I would like to take you out for a steak dinner."
I found the accapella on the discobelle blog. apparantly there's some ninja tune competition going on to remix it.

any way...here it is...let me know what you think

'UNDERGROUND/HEAD’S DOWN’ - THURSDAY 10pm til 12AM on FM 99.3 (Sydney EST)

sooooooo.... what's in a name? ask the station. All good. We move on.

delved into the slowly and steadily reissued (at least online) Raw Fusion backcatalogue to snatch up some goodness, combining it with some recent releases for a short mix this week. It ain't nowhere near complete until they put out the Red Astaire stuff though. The most thorough label doing it for mine. Click here for a featureon the man btw. Top dude, and he def rocked Sydney when he came through.

otherwise, we rocked that Drop mix (it's criminal that no one over here's playing that!) thrown up by nalden. There's a link to the side, so you best get correct. One of my faves for the year no doubt - the Erjee track is crazy!

and how can I not post about that record above??? Japan's Samon Kawamura remixes the remix something serious! Big toon! Huge! Otherwise, a welcome, welcome return from Nomo, more Ummah like stuff from Q-Tip, Mweslee and the All City crew got that good good, Hint damn near got the album of the year, and 2000 Black's new album gets more rub.
Following on from 'the newness' last week, we have a new name and a fresh outlook. Basically if things were going to keep moving forward, then we had make some changes. Plus I'm a Sagi, and we're nuts for this shit (change that is).

So this isn't really a return then. Well, not for the show. That was last week, and was massive quite frankly. But for Samiyam..... if you're talking about him, well then it definitely is. In a big way. His new four track EP on Hyperdub is killing shit. This heater alongside that Flying Lotus/Lil Wayne mix that's hurtin' em, a rough NEW J Dilla joint, ANOTHER huge Yellowtail track, crazy heaviness from both Jahdann Blakkamoore and Lewi White, a bass stomper from Connecticut, new Q-Tip (w/ D'angelo!!) and a reflective beauty from Kid Sublime.

Simplesmente adorei. Agora é a vez do "End Titles... Stories For Film".

Interview: Mr Scruff

Printed in complete form here: http://thebeathappening.wordpress.com/ go and download it! Issues 1 and 2 available now, its a great read and they put on decent events in London town.

I first saw Mr Scruff DJing one long set for the length of an entire 3 day festival! Now, im not one for stereotypes, but i noted the presence of 'hippies', 'townies' and scamps alike in the audience. Our paths crossed again at uni in Timepiece! The almighty student pit described by Mr scruff himself as "that place", I couldnt have said it better myself! With three hugely popular albums and fingers in multiple pies… hailing from Manchester, and proceeded undoubtedly by his imense reputation, the legend that is: “Scruff – let’s talk art, bussiness and vinyl…”

Hi, how are you doing? Im phoning about the interview with Beat Happening…

No problem, Yea very well

Hows the weather?

rubbish... had a good weekend though, thats Britain for you though i guess... you?

Alright, except there was a thunder storm last night...

At least we've had it better than you!

Yeah ha! - I may or may not stick to my questions... do you do many interviews over the phone?

about five a week at the moment...

You working on a new album coming out?

No, not for a while... just some new music... various bits and bobs... making good use of the phone!

The first question is fairly generic... in terms of the aesthetic of your music, what makes someone’s music their own?

Well, anyone who makes music personal to them, ends up with a mixture of personality and influences... for me, a DJ, Im influenced by a hell of a lot. For a very long time ive been interested in the social conditions and the history behind the people who made the music. I get a lot of inspiration, and a lot of ideas this way.

So your more interested in making music for yourself than the masses?

Well… basically just enjoying it i think... trying out new stuff, not being too scientific. im not bound by genre, kind of bass noise or tempo. I just put a bit of a twist on stuff and it happens. Some music that’ss 50 years old puts a modern music to shame. Nothing’s really new, just combinging peoples ideas, nuances, subtlties and presenting them in a different way or different context. Having a knowledge of everything, house to blues, dubstep to cuban music, to latin, to reggae, disco, to library music, to classical music, or whatever... I can create a lot of happy accidents... and also, draw connections within music, like being in a lab with loads of mad chemicals and finding what goes together!

How many records you got then?

20,000 or something. I have a few of rooms full of them, im married so i gotta keep it a little bit under control. There's no way you could ever possibly listen to them all anyway.

Do you still enjoy listening to records?

With that amount of records, your always discovering things that you forgot you even had. There would be no point if i wasnt enjoying it. When something comes out of your hobby, as long as you maintain the right attitude to it, dont start doing stuff you wouldnt normally do, just coz your getting paid for it, then theres no reason why you shouldnt carry on enjoying it. I was djing and collecting music for over ten years before i got my first gig. Its habbit. it has always felt like that, and still feels like that to this day, only today, but i dont have to work in quick save! Im always aware of how lucky i am, that i can play whatever i want, and that i can make a living from it, but i definately dont take it for granted.

Do you feel a kinship with the Manchester scene?

There's so much music going on in the city, its incredible... I think because its had a legacy for quite a while, you know, northern soul, punk, factory records, it attracts people, it definately has more than its fair share of talented, creative people.

Do you feel more on the live music side of things there than say, the ‘glitch electronica scene’?

Not really man, its not segreagated. Theres so much music that you can’t really keep up with all of it. I love Skam records, as much as... well, a lot of the indie and rock, you get all sorts… Manchester's city centre is actually quite small, there is such a lot going on, but its not like in say London where you can just surround yourself with people who are just into one kind of music... there's no like glitch electronica scene, everyone pretty much knows each other, and there's not that many venues either...so your just sort of squished in to gether…

Like a melting pot?

No, not really like a melting pot, more like a crowded bus! you get to know what other people are up to, you can’t avoid people really... its good.

Sounds like you like it!

Yeah, definately, ive lived here of 25 years so...

What do you think of the music industry then? the state of it? you must have been asked this a hundred times!

Its on everybody's lips, everyone wants an answer and nobody has one! The industry has only been around for sort of, 125 / 130 years and we've had loads of format wars… the thing is, its going from physical to non physical this time, which throws up loads of issues...

Such as?

Payment, obviously... people are expecting music for free... and the way its distributed, i mean you can get 10,000 mp3s on your ipod, but it will sound like a transistor radio, so were going forwards in terms of convenience and portability, but backwards in terms of quality. It could end 'bodies' of work, with people downloading single tracks and whatever. The internet is great in terms of hearing stuff you might not otherwise hear, but theres about an extra 100 000 rubbish tunes on there as well. I expect some 14 year old who lives in orkney will probably come up with a solution to it all!

The people in the most trouble are the major record labels, they have had complete control over pressing plants, distribution, retail, and the machines the music is played on... its getting blown apart a bit, and you've got companies like Tesco who think “well 'we've got a hundred thousand outlets, we'll sign the next Paul Mcartney album' . its odd.

cool.well i saw you play at a festival somewhere... about ten years ago... an epic long set... i have a signed ticket you singed when you played at timepiece in exeter while I was a student too...

oh that place.

Ha ha yeah. All the best for the future! thanks for talking to us.

You can find Mr Scruff a this official homepage www.mrscruff.com or at www.myspace.com/mrscruffofficial.
