We keep hearing that the key to success in the "new" NHL is the draft. Whether referencing Pittsburgh's knock-out run of top 2 picks (Fleury, Crosby and Malkin) or Washington's jam-packed youth corps (Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin, Green, Laich, Gordon, Fehr . . . plus the entire Hershey Bears squad) or Detroit's miracle late-round success (Datsyuk anyone?), power house teams know how to leverage their draft choices to create solid lineups.

Which brings us to the Flyers. Journalists rave about Holmgren's clever trades, attributing the entire revitalization to new acquisitions. And in a sense that's all true. Kimmo Timonen provided the reliable defense missing since the retirement of Eric Desjardins. Scott Hartnell and Scottie Upshall brought gritty agitation to the forward lines, while Danny Briere added finesse and skill to the power play. Meanwhile, Marty Biron supplied the needed netminding.

But paying for players only works if the core is strong. The Flyers have spent the past 10 years drafting well, especially considering that they usually receive late first round picks because they are a consistently successful team. Let's take a look at the list of Flyers' draft picks who have made the NHL as regulars since the 1998 draft:

1998: Simon Gagne, Antero Niittymaki
2000: Justin Williams
2001: Patrick Sharp, Dennis Seidenberg
2002: Joni Pitkanen
2003: Jeff Carter, Mike Richards

There may not be a plethora of players there. But the ones that have made it in, have made it big. Simon Gagne scored 40-goals in back-to-back seasons, and he is just now hitting his prime. Justin Williams may be injured, but ask Carolina fans how they feel about his contributions to their team. Patrick Sharp is the third element on the Toews-Kane line that tore it up in Chicago last year. And need I even explain the quality play of Jeff Carter and Mike Richards?

As the 2008 training camp draws to a close, we see a few more Flyers picks poised to take their places in the NHL. Steve Downie (2005) could prove an integral part of the Flyers' 4th line with Arron Asham and Riley Cote, nicknamed aptly "the Black and Blue" line. Claude Giroux (2006) may be down with the Phantoms to start the year, but the talent he displayed during his emergency call-up in February suggests that will not a longterm appointment. And Luca Sbisa (2008) could prove the offensive-defenseman the Orange and Black faithful have been waiting for.

It should prove a season worth watching!

Max Afinogenov will need to regain his scoring touch for the Sabres

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="480" caption="Max Afinogenov will need to regain his scoring touch for the Sabres"][/caption]

First part in a multi-part series previewing the Buffalo Sabres' 2008-2009 season.

On pixels, offense hardly seems to be a problem for the Buffalo Sabres in 2008-2009. The team that ranked fourth in the NHL in goals last season (251), returns largely intact. Gone are freewheeling defenseman Brian Campbell and the dude he was traded for, Steve Bernier, as well as bit players Dmitri Kalinin, Michael Ryan, and Nolan Pratt. New faces include defenseman Craig Rivet and forward Matt Ellis. Plus the Sabres could welcome aboard a handful of prospects, depending on how the season progresses. With at least 15 experienced NHL forwards in the organization, however, it's unlikely that Nathan Gerbe or Tim Kennedy will see much, if any time in Buffalo, unless catastrophic injury occurs.

So, that leaves the Sabres with an experienced, but still young, group of talented forwards that underperformed at times last year. It's hard to accuse a team that nearly led the NHL in scoring (only 7 goals behind No. 1 Ottawa) of failing to live up to its potential, but at the same time, a team that falls from the Preisdents Trophy to out of the playoffs must have had its problems, notable departures notwithstanding. Buffalo did have a few players reach career highs in scoring, perhaps not to be matched this season, but the power play took a big dip. (We'll look at the special teams in a later episode.) The Sabres also weathered down seasons from some of their biggest guns. I expect most of them to rebound this year. The fact that several of the team's older veterans are heading to free agency and the continued maturation of a core group, many of whom have played together for at least 5 years now, should spell more production for the offense in 2008-09.

Here's a look at the Sabres top offensive threats (last year's goal total in parentheses):

Thomas Vanek (36) - Took a step backward last year, but still is among the best scorers in the NHL with 79 goals over the previous two seasons. Vanek will turn 25 this year and may finally be ready to emerge as a dominant player. Will need to get off to a fast start, unlike last year's 4 goals in 19 games.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="480" caption="Thomas Vanek led the Sabres with 36 goals last season."][/caption]

Derek Roy (32) - Coming off career highs in goals, assists, points, and games, he could challenge the 100-point mark if he continues his improvement. However, he'll be hard-pressed to exceed his goal total of a year ago.

Jason Pominville (27) - If he stays at the point on the power play and commits to shooting, his goal total could go way up. He had 10 of his 18 goals on the PP in 2005-06, but only 4 with the man-advantage in the last two seasons combined.

Ales Kotalik (23) - Pencil him in for 15-25 goals each season. Not a dynamic scorer, but with his great shot and his size, he could be. Nothing else has motivated him, but it's a contract year for him. Maybe that spurs him to play with a little more urgency. Maybe.

Jochen Hecht (22) - The old man. He had a career high in goals last season, but it's not likely to be topped this year at age 31. He'll probably end up in the high teens in about 60-70 games. He hasn't played 80 games since 2001-2002 with Edmonton.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="392" caption="Jochen Hecht scored a career-high 22 goals in 2007-08."][/caption]

Daniel Paille (19) - The former first-round pick had an excellent first full NHL season, scoring 19 goals while averaging only 13:16 in ice time per game. He'll definitely see a regular shift this season, probably with Hecht and Pominville. On that line, he'll also get a lot more scoring chances.

Drew Stafford (16) - A disappointment last year, Stafford only barely eclipsed his rookie numbers despite playing in 23 more games. He'll likely start the season with Vanek and Roy, but at age 23, if he doesn't produce, he could be headed to Portland.

Paul Gaustad (10) - Will start the season in street clothes after thumb surgery, but is coming off the best offensive year of his career. Still not much of a scoring threat, but solid on face-offs and in the corners.

Max Afinogenov (10) - Wow, is he too far down this list. Never a great goal scorer, but still an excellent playmaker. He's healthy this year, and with a big contract on the line, could have a banner year. Then again, we know what happens most of the time when he tries SOOO hard to make a play. Turnover city.

Clarke MacArthur (8) - Will he start the year in Buffalo or Portland? According to the Sabres web site, it's Portland. He's not currently listed on the roster or the depth chart. Hmmm.

Tim Connolly (7) - Another playmaker who is scoring challenged. Scoring is all the more difficult when he can't walk, skate, sit up straight, or otherwise fend off whatever malady has stricken him like a cursed gazelle. Seriously, anything we get from him this year is a bonus. He'll be gone next year.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="418" caption="Tim Connolly had just seven goals last season."][/caption]

Adam Mair (5), Patrick Kaleta (3), Andrew Peters (1), Matt Ellis (3) - Aside from Ellis, little can be expected from the resident tough guys. I'd be thrilled to get another 9 goals from that trio. Ellis, waived by LA, is insurance in case Gaustad's injury takes longer to heal or someone else goes down in the meantime.

Rookies - The Sabres will likely bring up Gerbe at some point later in the season, perhaps also Marek Zagrapan. Gerbe is tiny, but he's also talented. Once he makes it up to Buffalo, he'll make it real difficult to send him back down.

Defensemen: Jaro Spacek (9), Craig Rivet (5), Toni Lydman (4), Nathan Paetsch (2), Andrej Sekera (2), Henrik Tallinder (1), Teppo Numminen (0) - Unless Mike Weber sneaks into the rotation, this will be the top seven defensemen for Buffalo. Spacek is on the last year of his contract and could have a big season. Tallinder and Sekera like to jump in the play on the offensive end and should add to their goal totals of a year ago.

He was formerly a New York Ranger and he used that to get in with some of the fashion whackos in New York. Gawker has a laundry list of the idiocy regarding this toolbox and if you don't know who he is or like him now, read away and you will find him repugnant.

Avery once dated Calvin Klein's ex-wife, Kelly, Rachel Hunter, and Kim Bauer (seen here with Avery) before she was eaten by cougars on TV's "24". That is quite the hot streak for the guy more known for standing in front of Marty Brodeur swinging his stick around like a jackass. Now, Avery has got his hands on uber-indie actress Catherine Keener. It's sad to see such a cool actress hang out with someone capable of the douchebaggery that precedes Avery.

I love this time of year, MLB playoffs are in full swing (and the Red Sox are doing well), College Football is heating up (Penn State is a very delightful surprise for me right now), the NFL is a few weeks in (even though I'm trying to boycott this season as much as possible), and it signals the start of a new NHL season. I know that I am only one of a handful of fans here in the U.S., but I love hockey. Even if you don't fully get into the season or games, you have to check out a game in HD if you can... It's absolutely stunning. So, here's to the start of a new season... Even though the outlook is bleak once more this year, I turn to the familiar chant of "Go Leafs Go!" Can't wait till December 4th when they come to Phoenix to take on the Coyotes. Here's to hopes of a decent 2008/09 Toronto Maple Leafs!

The NHL Premier was a success in Europe so I thought it would be a good time to look at the over-under numbers set by our pals in Vegas for the upcoming NHL season. Here are the six over-under bets that I like the most for the upcoming season (for those interested in such activities).

Columbus under 83.5 points - Do not buy into the preseason hype for the Blue Jackets. Sure Rick Nash is a terrific player and Pascal LeClaire is solid in goal, but this team is flawed everywhere else. Their defense remains mediocre. Getting only Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman in return for Zherdev will go down as the worst trade in the young franchise's history. I like Christian Huselius and R.J. Umberger but not as first line players. This is going to be ugly again.

Detroit over 109.5 points - This does look like a lot of points to be taking the over on but Detroit reached 115 points last year and have somehow improved their team. They added Marian Hossa, the best free agent available this offseason, and Ty Conklin, maybe the best backup goalie in the sport. Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen are both in contract years which should help them avoid the Stanley Cup hangover season. Take the over.

Edmonton over 93.5 points - Edmonton showed a lot of improvement last year as they finished the season strong to reach 88 points. They will make a jump to the next level this year so 93.5 points is definitely attainable. The duo of Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky is great to watch. Also Sheldon Souray returns from injury which gives them one of the better power plays in the league. Edmonton will contend for the Northwest title so I like the over.

Los Angeles under 72.5 points - The organization has already admitted that this year will include a lot of growing pains for a Kings team that is still rebuilding. There could be some bright spots as their young players develop but don't expect that to lead to a lot of wins.

New Jersey under 97.5 points - The Devils continue to refuse to abandon a style from the past. Adding Rolston and Holik would be good moves if it was five years ago. No way they duplicate last year's 99 point campaign but Brodeur will keep them in contention for a playoff spot. However, 97.5 is still too high.

Dallas over 99.5 points - This is one of the better teams in the league and will be the main opposition to the Red Wings in their quest for a repeat. They have gotten younger and Marty Turco has given them very good stability between the pipes. They are very good at center and still have plenty of room to improve on last year's 97 point season. This is an easy over call.

The 2008-2009 NHL Hockey season officially commenced this weekend with two games being played in Europe. NHL poster boy Sidney Crosby led the Penguins to a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Ottawa in Stockholm. The second game saw the New York Rangers defeat Tampa Bay 2-1 in Prague.

Next to another mediocre season of Clemson football, nothing gets me more excited in the realm of sports this time of year then NHL hockey. Despite living in a southern coastal city, there are a surprising number of options to get your hockey fix here in the Lowcountry. Many of the Carolina Hurricanes games are broadcasted on the Sports South Network and some Atlanta Thrasher games can be seen on Turner South. Then there is the national coverage that Versus broadcasts in HD on a weekly basis.

And off course there is our local hockey team the Charleston Stingrays. The Rays are coming off very successful season that saw them capture the South Division crown before coming up short in the American Conference Finals. The Rays open their season on the road this Wednesday, October 8. Their home opener is October 18. If you haven’t checked out the Stingrays live and in person at the North Charleston Coliseum, I would highly recommend catching a game this season. Even if hockey isn’t your thing, the live product is immensely entertaining to any sports fan. Tickets are cheap, seats are close to the action, it is a family friendly environment, and good times are had by all.

If sports video games are your thing, then don’t pass up Electronic Arts’ latest hockey offerings in NHL ’08 or NHL ’09. They are highly regarded as some of the best sports video games ever made, capturing the look and feel of the real game and combining it with the addictive gameplay that made the series popular back in its glory days of the early 90’s.

The NHL technically started it's regular season on Saturday as a couple of games were played in Stockholm, Sweden and Prague, Czech Republic, but it's actually in the middle of it's pre-season. The rest of the regular season will kick off this Thursday. Yawn. It's too early to care about the NHL season, especially since it's not even that cold out yet.

"Dude love is true love."

Rangersfest was a total blast! Thanks to the New York Rangers who swept the two-game series against the Lightning at Prague, that was just the icing to the already super sweet cake of this past weekend. I was supposed to post a summary of what happened during Rangersfest, but instead I'll briefly highlight some key points and then address the Rangers' games.

Highlights of Rangersfest:

We drank 62 beers in one night.

Blood Brothers blasting over the iHome.

All the snacks Kevin bought being devoured by us drunken doods.

Rangers winning their first game of the season, 2-1.

Writing a song titled, "Little Turtle / So Much Love in This World."

Watching Appaloosa in the theater. Such an awesome western.

The bro-discussion for hours while eating our Taco Bell big boxes.

Watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia DVDs.

Rangers winning their second game of the season, 2-1.

Yup so that's basically it. Now to the Rangers games. Man did they look good. Okay, scoring only 4 goals with 80 shots on net isn't a great shooting percentage, but they really did carry the play for both games (outshooting the Lightning 80-40). Renney rotated the four lines without fear of who the opposing players were on. Kevin couldn't stress his love enough for the fourth line (Voros-Betts-Orr) saying, "This might be the best fourth line in the entire league."

I am pleasantly surprised with how well the new players are meshing so early in the season. That was a problem last season with the big acquisitions of Drury and Gomez. None of them worked with Jagr. It looked like splitting Nylander and Jagr apart was a bad decision, but this year is entirely different. The first line of Drury-Gomez-Naslund was exceptional. The second line of Zherdev-Dubinsky-Dawes wasn't clicking as well as the first line, but they have a lot of potential and is a very strong second power play unit. The third line of Prucha-Korpikowski-Callahan were fast to the puck, but lack the finishing touches to land on the scorecard this weekend. They'll need Prucha to return to his scoring form from his rookie year to really be effective.

The defense was solid like usual. Redden is showing why the Rangers paid so much for him by making a huge impact on the power play. And the core of the defense is full of strong pairings. Even though many say that the blueline on the Rangers is their weak point, that is untrue. Just because they don't boast flashy names like Pronger and Lidstrom on defense doesn't mean their defense is the weak point. The Rangers allowed the fourth least amoung of goals last season because of their strong team-defense, and of course King Henrik between the pipes.

This was a great start to the season for the Blueshirts, and if this is a preview of what the whole season will look like, then there's going to be a lot of happy fans in New York. Next game is this Friday, the Rangers' home opener against the very young and talented Chicago Blackhawks, led by last Rookie of the Year Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews and their newly acquired goaltender Cristobal Huet. Because of the lack of chemistry on the Lightning with their entirely revamped team, the Blackhawks will be a much better test to see where the Rangers stand among NHL's elite.

Ever since I bought a plasma tv a couple of years ago, I have been watching HD.

I like hockey. I am a fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Edmonton Oilers. Living in Seattle, it's hard to get any kind of hockey, with the exception of Hockey Night in Canada on the CBC, and a game of the week on Versus, and the playoff push and playoffs on NBC that starts in February. With that being said, I automatically have been subscribing to the NHL Center Ice package every year. The only drawback is that most of the games on these channels are only in standard definition.

Hockey is hard to follow on television. It's even worse in SD, especially with trying to follow the puck.

After hearing from a friend that DirecTV offers the Center Ice package in HD, and not to mention the NHL Network in HD. I made a very quick decision to cancel Comcast cable and go with DirecTV...

Despite a really crappy installation experience (the installer was late, didn't get the installation done until close to midnight, activation not until the morning after), I'm actually quite impressed with DirecTV. I also get more channels in HD, Hockey in HD, I was also able to get the NFL Sunday Ticket and a lot of extra programming for about $50.00 less than what I was paying for Comcast, and not to mention a lot less channels as well.

Being able to watch 8 NFL Games at a time is quite cool...

Kudos DirecTV!

The most anticipated part of this weekend for me - besides Tina Fey's weekly skewering of Sarah Palin on SNL - remains the Bills-Cardinals game. Although Arizona is much better at home than on the road, I feel good that the Bills head into the bye at 5-0. Buffalo has coasted through the last two weeks, but they will definitely be challenged by the Cards, injuries or no. It's time the Bills turn in a solid all-around performance. The larger question remains whether or not Ch. 4 is back on the air in time for the game. I'm just sayin', I have my rabbit ears ready.

**I thought I'd be a little more into the baseball playoffs, but the first round has been a bit of a dud. At least 3/4 of the teams lack any kind of personality. It's always fun to see Chicago teams implode, particularly the Cubs. At this point, I think I'm rooting for the Dodgers to beat the Phillies and the Red Sox to beat Tampa, creating the first Manny Classic World Series.

**It was great to see NHL regular season action yesterday. I caught just a few minutes of the Rangers-Lightning but most of the Pens-Senators. Looked like an early season game, but why so many empty seats?? And who said Mike Milbury was welcome in my living room?!?

Go Bills!

Habs fans hoping for perhaps a final glimpse of Max Pacioretty in game action were disappointed as t

Habs fans hoping for perhaps a final glimpse of Max Pacioretty in game action were disappointed as the Canadiens closed out pre-season play last night at the Bell Center with a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild.

After the morning skate, head coach Guy Carbonneau announced that Pacioretty, who had survived the first two rounds of cuts to earn a trip to Mount Tremblant for the team's weekend bonding session, would not be in the lineup against the Wild. Pacioretty, the 19-year-old from Connecticut, had made a strong case for himself with an impressive training-camp showing. But there would be no number 67 on the ice against the Wild.

Too bad. The Habs could have used him.

With visions of an October 10th regular-season-opening date in Buffalo against the Sabres clearly dancing in the heads, the Canadiens simply went through the motions last night against the Wild, failing to generate any goals, or many quality scoring chances. They did direct 46 shots at Minnesota goalie Niklas Backstrom. Unfortunately for the Canadiens, only 25 of them hit the net.

Yannick Weber, the young Swiss defenceman, did get a chance to suit up. But that's only because of ongoing injury problems that left Andrei Markov, Francis Boullion, and Ryan O'Byrne on the sidelines. Of the three, the injury to Boullion is clearly the most troubling to the Habs. The popular rearguard will not be ready to answer the bell for the regular season.

As for Weber, for the record, he saw 18:32 of ice time last night and finished a minus one. The owner of a wicked shot, Weber, down the road, could be the missing link on the point on the power play. But for now, look for The Coach to slot any number of forwards into that position with Sergie Kostitsyn showing the most promise.

By the end of the night, Pacioretty, Weber, and goalie Marc Denis were on their way to the team's American Hockey League farm team in Hamilton. With the three cuts, the Canadiens are left with a 26-man roster; a roster that includes a number of injured players, including Georges Laraque, who has yet to see game action as one of the newest Habs. Mind you, there was a flurry of excitement in the Canadiens locker room following the morning skate yesterday. There was Laraque at his stall, putting on a Canadiens' uniform. On his feet however, were a pair of running shoes.

It was merely for a photo shoot.

Whether Laraque is able to complete the look with a pair of skates, in time for the team's season opener in Buffalo, remains to be seen.

Juventus-Palermo: Under 2.5 mål

1.943 hos Pinnacle. 7/10 units.

Scan doesn't do it justice. Would like to get the drawing signed one day. Took me about 16 hours - 11x14 - 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B Pencils- Tortillons - Tissue - Kneaded eraser - Electric eraser

Sure was nice listening to Ralph and Razor on the radio the other night. Got the fever really going now. Just got new satellite and realized my wife did not order the FSN package...thats like having a new born and forgetting to buy diapers and bottles. I thought I had her trained on the Stars stuff. Think she is still bitter Darryl Sydor is not playing for them...lol.

I'll add a few thoughts about camp in the next few days. Until then...

Rangers 2, Lightning 1

Markus Naslund was getting scoring chances at will, Scotty Gomez was faster than anyone on the ice, and the Rangers new captain has found his place on the top line. Petr Prucha still can't find the other side of the goal line, and apparently the check magnet in his jersey is still working as well as ever, with him getting smashed into the boards any time he was near the puck in the offensive zone. King Henrik was one great backhander from Marty St. Louis away from a shut out. All rumors of injuries to he, and Marc Staal seem to be false enough for them to play at the tops of their games. The Rangers are still having PP problems (1-7), but the penalty kill was perfect in four chances. The Rangers season has already started, and Drury's first game with the C leads to two points.

“We’re not looking to trade Marc Savard,” said Chiarelli, who didn’t rule out other deals. “There’s a chance. I’m looking to improve the team. I’ve had a couple of discussions, more than a couple.” - Boston Herald

He ended that statement by suggesting that maybe, everybody should just cool out, maybe. Sage advice. I think it says something about the attitude of Bruins fans and the hockey blogosphere that the Marc Savard trade rumors, (started by the Herald, mind you, and completely unsourced) were given more than a second of legitimate thought. Why would a team whose primary weakness is goal-scoring trade away one of the top point producers in the league? That'd be like the San Jose Sharks trading away Joe...never mind.

So, Savard is staying, obviously, but Tuukka Rask is starting the season in goal at the Dunkin Donuts Center rather than the Garden, and he ain't happy. Now, if I was Rask, I'd know that the number one goalie position was mine in 2009, and maybe, just cool out, maybe. That said, I think the Bruins need to keep Rask happy, and that means bringing him up by Christmas for an extended tryout, if injuries don't make that a necessity earlier in the season. This means, unfortunately, that the writing's on the wall for the NHL's Rodney Dangerfield, Tim Thomas. Manny Fernandez, even if he returns to his 2005-07 form, will be impossible to trade, given his contract, and the fact that the most interested party for Fernandez's services (Ottawa) is a division rival who will be battling the Bruins for the same playoff spot. So it's time for The Journeyman, Tim Thomas, to journey somewhere where he'll hopefully be appreciated. Thank you for getting us to the playoffs last year, Tim, and for your extreme awkwardness while on camera. You will be missed.

I'm headed down to the Garden to catch the B's/Isles game, probably by my lonesome. Will post a report when I get back.
