Online personal portal environments have immense potential in education for a whole host of uses.

Three of the best known online portal tools are:

Netvibes

Pageflakes

iGoogle

You can see comprehensive notes about online portals, and Netvibes in particular, from 'Click On' by the BBC/Open University.

Firstly, they are an invaluable way to categorize and organize content of interest if you are a learner. You can place common items on the same page and categorize using understandable names. The content can come from any source that has an RSS feed, which delivers any changes straight to your particular portal page. This saves you lots (and we mean LOTS) of time and effort locating new content of interest to you. This has to be one of THE most useful tools for learners out there and it's a mystery why more aren't using them.

This has suddenly turned into a very useful research tool for your studies. Not only can you pull in relevant external reference content, you can also access all your own produced content. This means you can categorize content into separate sections for your different study areas. Then under the relevant section you can pull in all your bookmarks from your preferred social bookmarking tool, along with other content you've produced elsewhere; be that reflections or notes you've blogged, videos you've produced and hosted on YouTube (or elsewhere), your online lab notebook wiki, etc.

You can keep this content in your online portal personal, or (and this is a really good bit) you can share it with others. This means that portals can be used by educators to deliver relevant, topical content to a group of learners. Will Richardson has written about this in his Weblogg-ed blog. You can see how this can be used solely by the instructor educator or as a group resource with the ability for any of the group to add additional content feeds.

Extending this concept further, portals can easily be developed as the hub of content for a community to share resources.

I've been working for a while on the use of personal portals from a social education perspective. I played around by developing the uostech portal pages as a hub for Users of Scholarship Technology. I used this as an experimentation and research platform to 'play' around with how Web2.0 tools could be loosely harnessed for learning, teaching and research. I presented the uostech concept with a colleague at a Research 2.0 Workshop at the NCeSS Forth International Conference on e-Social Science, Manchester, UK, 18-20 June 2008. A slidecast of the presentation is available online.

By writing this post and working on uostech I realise that there is much more to be done with using online portal tools and I will develop more examples.

In my most recent posts I gave some hints on how to think beyond borders when it comes to the task of trendspotting.

As said, most often you need to see the pattern behind things happening. Therefore it might be useful to draw preliminary scenes. Quite exaggerated ones. In my opinion this makes it easier to boil your insights herefrom down to something of use.

In charge of this task you need to get some inspiration of course. Otherwise it´ll be probably really difficult to perform well on that one. Well, if you can´t follow the suggestions I came up with in my recent posts for some reason, here are two quite powerful webtools to get you some new inspiration. At least from my point of view.

The first one I would like to recommend is called idée Multicolr Search Lab. It´s powered by Flickr. With this tool, you can affect the colours shown in pictures. And this is quite useful as colours carry moods. Well, it´s a bit difficult to explain. For example the one you can see on your right. I created it with this webapplication. Go there and check it out yourself. You´ll like it!

The second one, wich is different but even more sophisticated, is called Moodstream. It works with audio, video and pictures. This one is powered by Getty Images and of course it´s a tool with advertising purposes of them. Here you can adjust the moody direction you´d like to have.

Moodstream is a powerful brainstorming tool designed to help take you in inspiring, unexpected directions.

These tools are not only useful to get inspiration when it comes to trendspotting & future thinking. They´re also good if you need some time off or new inspiration, working on your PhD, beeing stuck at a certain point of your project or whatever.

Hope you like it and it´ll lend you a helping hand every now and then.

Today an appointment with the professor for whom I made a private page in Netvibes. She was tired of all the user names and passwords she needs for all kind of accounts. That was the reason she didn't look very much on her Netvibes-page anymore. She forgets the user name and password every time. So I proposed to add her to the Public Page (www.netvibes.com/ogcmb) I made for the department she belongs and she agreed. I hope it works fine now for her. I will contact her in several weeks for an evaluation.

WordCamp Portland, the city’s first conference+unconference around the blogging platform, was happening all day Saturday (where by “all day” I mean “from 8 am to 11:45 pm,” partly thanks to Aaron Hockley’s diligence.) On the first breakout session, Justin Kistner made a presentation on setting up a WordPress backchannel ecosystem for team collaboration and work delegation using a combination of:

WordPress MU

BuddyPress, “A WordPress MU Based Social Networking Platform,” and

bbPress a forum software for WordPress

I tried to take as extensive of a note as I possibly could, per usual. And with no snarky notes or analysis this time.

In other words, Verbatim, baby.

Here we go.

*** BEGIN EVENT NOTATION ***

On helping people with blogs

When I first started two years ago, I just had one blog, which was a lot of fun. Now, I have six personal blogs, three organization blogs, af company blog, and I work with about a dozen friends and family blogs.

Problems

Maintenance: upgrades, plugins, themes, etc.

Deployment: install, configuration, services, etc. Google Analytics, MyBlogLog, Technorati, etc.

Training: Skill development, focus, actualization, etc. After you get them up to speed technically (login, etc.) they get overloaded with information.

Interoperability: Data portability, coordination, etc. I actually need to do delegate blogging assignment with somebody. Interoperability between staffs. OurPDX uses Google/Yahoo Groups or some other coordination space. But I need my blog to work. I didn’t need another system.

Need

Low maintenance

Quickly deployable

Easy to learn and possible to develop a training program in

Collaborative

Bottomline: efficient, integrated system for blogging.

Why Wordpress?

Ubiquitous

Easy to learn

Capable

Free

Actively developed

Limitations

Enterprise concerns

Support

Security

Compliance

More blogMS than CMS

BuddyPress: WordPress as a social network

These features work:

Profiles

Friends

Groups

Messaging

These features don’t work quite yet:

Wire

Activity

Statuses

Albums

But that’s okay, because the other working features are enough to create a backchannel. These are the way I use to organize, because people don’t want to learn another interface. So, if I need to send somebody a message, it could be a part of the system.

This, and bbPress, make it possible for me to have a backchannel conversation with folks without the whole world seeing.

I’m also using WordPress as a ticketing sytem. My job is to organize bloggers. Rather than using GoogleGroups or other ticketing systems (which, by the way, are made for programmers and are horrid for everyone else.)

This is how I work. I assign:

Posts = assignments

Categories = people I assign it to

Custom field for tracking status (“open,” “close,” etc.)

WordPress as an ecosystem

This original presentation was built to manage a social relation program. Ultimately what I have is a backchannel. I use this to collaborate with my colleagues. A Wordpress Mu installation, powered by BuddyPress and WordPress BB in it. Each one of us has a WordPress Mu installation as a ticketing system. And the client will get a WordPress interface that they will write the posts for.

How I create assignments

I have a Netvibes dashboard that I use for intelligent monitoring. My work process is: see relevant articles. Open each in every tab. Then highlight the “abstract” of the article, click on a bookmarklet and have it automatically be made into a new post.

The reason I use this instead of a platform like Ning is because my documentation and the user experience essentially rest on the same platform. And I know for sure that I can pass data from one blog to another because they’re using the same format. In short: all your knowledge integrated into one experience.

Roadmap

Using the “Press This” bookmarklet for portability

Using WordPress MU as an aggregator
One of the first thing that you think about when you create a social network, is to have the ability to see things across the board. I use FeedWordPress. What I can do is create a “rollup” page with that, until BuddyPress has this feature

Custom, ticketing style theme

4 column widget dashboard template
I currently use Netvibes. But it doesn’t have to be Netvibes. WordPress has widgets, right? Why not have everything be integrated in WordPress?

Screencast help documentation
Instead of “good luck figuring it out manual.” ScreenFlow has a lot more hosepower than I wil ever need, so I just use Jing

From here

Play with WordPress MU, BuddyPress and bbPress

Share projects online

Follow Advanced Operators

*** END EVENT NOTATION ***

I now am several weeks behind, I have Podcasts and Multimedia , Social Networking and Gaming/Virtual Worlds still to explore.

Online applications and tools: My colleague and I decided that we would each set up a different homepage for comparison. Mike set up a Netvibes page and I set up one in Pageflakes. Netvibes looks better than Pageflakes in my opinion; however, we did have problems with the sizing of the items on the page and being able to view the contents of the feeds within them. In Pageflakes I found that my menu and feeds section at the top of the screen would die or disappear from time to time during the feed loading process and would only reappear when if I signed out and in again. As an organisational tool I like the idea of a homepage and can see that for students this could be really useful. Everything organised in one place - time saving and mind clearing for people with lots of work to do and a tight schedule to keep! For me it was a good way to practise with the RSS feeds I had rather struggled with in Bloglines.

I have also looked briefly at Google documents and downloaded a Firefox toolbar although I haven't yet tried to customise it.

We had a visit from Jenny a couple of weeks ago which gave us a welcome opportunity to discuss some of the issues we had encountered during the course. Jenny helped us to set up a Wye Library wiki which we hope to encourage our evening and weekend staff to participate in when they return from the vacation. I have no idea whether they have used wikis before so I have tried to give it some content and structure to help them at the beginning. I have set up several different pages and imported various bits of information that I hope they will find useful. Doing this has been a very useful exercise as a wiki needs a purpose and my original wiki page in the Learning 2.0 wiki was a bit aimless! Now we just need to get on with using it...

Tuesday afternoon I instructed Oncology-nurses in searching for literature in our (online)library. They were happy to hear and see that I had put several sources which may be of interest to them together on: www.netvibes.com/EduCMB. Unfortunately the Belgian database Invert was not accessible but that had nothing to do with the Universe.
It is difficult for our nurses to find the relevant information in all the medical databases and resources available on our website. A place where nursing information is put together is very useful for them.
I'm planning to contact the Wenckebach Instituut to see if they have any idea's or wishes. e.g. about what to add to the Universe, idea's on how to use the Universe in the nurses education, etc. The Wenckebach Institute provides amongst others (postgraduate) education, advanced training and refresher courses for nurses (and other professions in the hospital).

What might the next generation of the internet and herewith of webbrowsers might look like?

Well, in my opinion we need to extend it by one layer, taking it to the 3rd dimension. With the rise of Web 2.0, a term coined by Tim O´Reilly, the 2D-internet is borderlining regarding it´s future-opportunities. You have all these cool new 2.0-applications, using Ajax-technology and herewith strengthening the internet´s capability of organizing and providing information to the people.

The first projects are hesitatingly entering the virtual stage. They even entered the stage some time ago and in my opinion it´s hard to say where they are actually heading to. But still, I think that the indication of their sheer existence is evident. And it´s pointing a finger at 3D. Think of SecondLife. It´s a 3D-app.

3D will stenghten and power up the web enourmously. It´s literally speaking enriching it by a whole dimension. And that´s a lot! We can´t even imagine the possibilities crossing our paths within that. Well you can find a whole bunch of examples here. I won´t dig too deep here.

Let me give you two examples of what the next-generation-webbrowser might look like - at least in my opinion:

That´s TimeMachine - Apple´s system-recovery tool on Leopard:

That´s Cool Iris (formerly PicLens) - a Firefox Add-on and 3D-picture-searchtool.
Last but not least, the first 3D-webbrowser are uprising - discover Spacetime!

Counting down the top 5 tools to help keep moms in grad school sane!

#4 - Netvibes

Netvibes is an RSS aggregator - a fancy sounding tool (that's really easy to use) and that keeps track of all of your information.

You've probably seen similar applications - such as MyYahoo or MyGoogle - you 'personalize' your page with weather and news that is specific to your region, see a glimpse of your email inbox without actually opening it, etc.

Well, Netvibes is a similar application, but one that I think is infinitely better! First of all, it really nicely displayed. I'm a pretty visual person, so how something is laid out means a lot to me.

The main purpose of Netvibes is to collect, or subscribe to, RSS feeds. You know, that little funny orange box that you see on blogs and other websites that update frequently? If you have a blog that you read often (or would like to read often, but keep forgetting about), you can subscribe to it. Then, whenever a new post is created, it will show up in your Netvibes page. Then you don't have to spend a lot of time looking for it (and all the other blogs).

Now you can do this with any feed reader - GoogleReader, Bloglines, NewsGator to name a few.

But the reason I like Netvibes is that I can put a lot of stuff on my page that aren't just feeds. You can put post it notes, to do lists, flickr photos, facebook and myspace, yahoo and google mail inboxes...there a ton of stuff! And, you can organize all of this in different tabs.

So, what I do is I have a tab with my most used, general information. And I've made it my homepage on my browser. So whenever I get online, this is the first thing I see. And on this page I keep a stickie with the week's meal plan, another stickie with a running shopping list, a master to-do list, my facebook account and flickr photos. Using some of the "to-do list" techniques I learned from Flylady, I've been able to keep things all in one place here. And since I usually think of things I need to do when I'm working on schoolwork, rather than have to get up and find a paper list, I can put it on there and get back to work with minimal interruption.

So all of that is on my "general" tab. Then I've set up several other tabs based on the kind of information I'm looking for - one tab collects blogs on social change, one on visual communications, one on media studies...etc. I have a few professors who blog themselves, or use blogs in the classroom, so I have a tab for all the University related stuff. And I have a "Friends" tab for my friends' blogs.

Last year I was looking at blogs concerning the cylone in Burma, so I set up a tab called Nargis, and collected blogs that were from Burma, from Burmese expatriates, or that were about Burma. Having that tab set up and collecting the feeds made monitoring the situation very easy, and Netvibe's layout flexibilities made it easy to organize.

There are a lot of features and functions of Netvibes that I haven't explored yet - there is actually a social component to it as well. But what I do use has been a big help in keeping things organized and current. Check it out- let me know what you think! Do you use a feed reader? Which one? Why do you like it?

Grazie!

In a ho-hum webinar last night, Anne (surname not given) introduced a term new to many: 'tennis shoe learning'. That is, the learning done by people texting and web-browsing on their phones and PDAs while moving from one building or room to another. It's a good phrase but translates badly into UK English as 'trainer learning' or, perhaps, 'trainer education' and that is the antithesis of what many still call Web2.0 learning. New-style web-enabled learning is such a personally adaptive yet socially-constructed phenomenon that the challenge for many is how to keep up with the various tools and social networks on offer. Here's a sample from some recent trials I have been carrying out.

go2web20.net

Should be a searchable directory of about 2,000 tools and resources with brief descriptions to help you choose. There is currently a glitch in the initial Flash file so it is running like treacle - or not at all. When it works, it is a good starting point.

A (limited) free and paid-for service where a single-page graphic can be posted and several people can use markers and leave voice comments. Useful for development work or poster presentations.

synthasite

Wiki software often seems to require disproportionate amounts of learning when the alternative is to email a trusty old Word file. Zoho Wiki claims to be as easy as a wordprocessor and, once you have logged in, it really is. It is also free.

Great for collaborative working on documents (project papers, presentations) if you are all in different organisations. You need to set up private groups. (NB Do not use if you are required to keep data within, say, your company.)

Twitter

Oh dear, I'm still trying to like it. Rory Cellan-Jones uses it and he's the BBC Technology Correspondent - but do I really want to know he had his shaving gel confiscated at Gatwick? There are so many ways to send instant short messages and others fit into my life far more easily (e.g. Skype Chat - because I use Skype for online phone calls so it is on anyway).

NetVibes

Think of this as an old-fashioned scrapbook (complete with option for graphic embellishment) with the benefits of instant connection to any online resources. Customising it can take hours but if you do not mind casual observers finding what is on your public page and protect the elements to which it links, then it can be a very useful team/class resource base. It is probably best to set up a dedicated Yahoo account (new name) before you set up NetVibes.

yousendit

Faced with a monster-sized picture-in-picture presentation to ship to the US and India, there was the belated realisation that it would not get through a standard email route. The solution was YouSendIt which, for the technical, is an ftp service. For the non-technical, it is an electronic form of DHL or FedEx. Very easy and, for occasional use, free. What is more, it got there. (Just make sure the recipient is able to download large files.)

That's enough for one post. I'll cover portfolio programmes and widgets another day. Meanwhile, any thoughts on the above or on other practical programs that do not consume more time than they save, post them here!

As a small experiment, I'm crosslinking all my webpresences to see if it will lift my google ranking...probably won't do too much of a difference, but then again - can't hurt :-) I guess the next step will be to get in the papers and my name get into the public forum and have that validate my name from a public, popular source (now noted on my to-do list: "Get into online-newspapers to boost google ranking"). Blog comments probably help as well - so better start trashing-up on whatever might be a high profile debate out there...mmmh...Nyhedsavisen comes to mind....better not touch that one ;-)

Last week I was 2 days at the TICER08 workshop. On Wednesday afternoon we did the workshop Power to the Users (and the Librarians). It was very fun to do it. The result is there: TICER08 .The participants of the workshop made this Public Page together and it will get a follow up. So keep watching it. Again a nice example of what you can do with e.g. Netvibes.

On Friday I attended the module: "Libraries - Partners in Teaching and Learning". Very interesting and inspiring. First the very inspiring presentation of Debra Gilchrist. The second speaker was Christina Tovoté The afternoon started with Debra Gilchrist again because of the passing away of Leora Baron. Martin Lewis ended the day with his lively presentation The Information Commons - Learning as Architecture

My head is still filled up with all the stuff I heard and saw. I hope I will manage to bring some of there tips in practice. I will keep you informed.
