Last week, I brought, together with my whole class, a visit to the ship "The Amsterdam", which is (surprisingly ;)) lying in Amsterdam.

In my opinion, the ship didn't looked that beautiful. It wasn't as good as the Batavia Yard, at least.

After the visit to the ship, we went to NEMO Science Center, which was really cool. I've been there before, when I was like 7 years old.

There were a few exhibitions broken, though. But that's always the case with that advanced equipment; if you don't believe me how advanced this stuff is, go and take a look by yourself. You'll get what I mean if you're there.

After all, it was a good and nice, filled day!

If you occasionally peruse the New Scientist in book stores or on newsstands, or just enjoy a dose of easy-to-digest science, check out the magazine's YouTube channel. My favorite of their latest videos is about the deepest living fish ever found. These little buggers, called Snailfish, show all the characteristics of a deep sea existence. For one, their tail musculature is greatly reduced, and their oversized pectoral fins provide most of the locomotion. Living in the deep, these fish don't have to deal with strong wave action or fast currents. And it's not surprising that their shallower-water cousins have more powerful tails, and a lot more body pigmentation.

God, the creator, must be a real lazy bastard. He basically took the same fish and pawned it off as two separate creations. I feel cheated.

• Fui ao show do John Mayer com abertura do One Republic em agosto e do Maroon 5/Couting Crows/Agustana semana passada. Os dois foram em Tampa, no mesmo anfiteatro. Nem preciso falar que foram muuuuito bons! Do Counting Crows e Agustana foram meio fraquinhos, mas ta valendo!!! To tendo muita sorte com shows dessa vez. Essa semana tem Jonny Lang (meio desconhecido, mas um dos meus preferidos) no EPCOT, no Food and Wine Festival. O problema eh que eu trabalho nos dois dias do show. Se ninguem pegar meu shift de quinta eu vou dar call in personal e vou pro parque do mesmo jeito. Wish me luck!
• Estava no ultimo dia da Pleasure Island. Nao consegui entrar em nenhum club pq os ingressos acabaram as 19h, mas la fora tava muito bom. Quase nao dava pra andar de tanta gente. Meia noite tiveram 10 minutos de fogos, foi lindo. Mas apesar de tudo isso, foi triste pensar que em 2 horas estariam fechando as portas pra sempre. A gente ficava imaginando o povo que trabalhava la ha um tempao... complicado. No dia seguinte passei la a tarde. Motion e 8trax ja nem tinham mais a logomarca na frente e o lugar deserto.
• Comprei um Macbook preto que ja deu problema. Ou o problema eh comigo, nao eh possivel hehehe (meu outro macbook nao reconhecia a bateria). O negocio dessa vez eh com o leitor de CD e DVD. Tava tudo certo ate ontem, quando pela primeira vez fui gravar minhas fotos em DVD. Deu erro no meio e a partir dai nao quis ler mais nada. Vou ter que marcar um horario e perder um day off pra levar ate o Florida Mall na assistencia.
• Hoje fui receber o pessoal do HCP de outubro. Deu uma saudade do dia que tava chegando, sem conhecer nada, descobrindo pra qual condominio ia, quem seriam as roomates... Mas bom que a maioria agora ficou no Vista!!!
• Meu record card: 1.0 Call in sick, 0.5 dei clock in 5 minutos atrasada pro Discovery Day, 1 Reprimand e 1 Great Service Fanatic.
• Pois eh. Ja tenho uma reprimand, por total falta de atencao. Estava na parte que as pessoas saem da ride. Me ligaram do comeco dela pra avisar alguma coisa e o telefone nao tava funcionando direito e eu fui ligar pra manutencao pra avisar. Soh que enquanto eu fazia isso eu fiquei de costas pros guests e a concha que entra cadeira de rodas passou por mim (com gente dentro) e nao deu tempo de parar a ride pra descerem antes que dessem a volta pro comeco dela. O que tem de tao grave nisso eh que o espaco entre o UNLOAD (fim da ride) e o LOAD (comeco da ride) nao tem o tapete que detecta intrusao, ou seja, se alguem pular da concha ali, pode sofrer um acidente pq a ride nao vai parar. Enfim... ja foi neh. E agora procuro levar as coisas muito mais a serio pra nao cometer um erro besta desses de novo.
• 3 dias depois ganhei 1 great service fanatic quando tava apresentando o Turtle Talk e uma das managers estava assistindo o show da sala do ator. Quando terminou ela entrou no teatro e disse que eu estava fazendo um otimo trabalho, que dava pra ver que eu gostava mesmo de estar ali. No fim do show seguinte ela me trouxe o Fanatic! eeeeeee
• Quarta (08 de out.) a blusa da minha costume vai mudar. Eu ja vi a nova e eh horriiiiiiiiivel! Nao que a outra seja bonita, mas era uma das poucas que nao precisava enfiar pra dentro da calca centro-peito. Agora vai ser branca no meio, com as mesmas mangas de power ranger laranja, soh que o laranja mais chamativo do mundo. Fica parecendo aqueles caras que ficam no meio do aeroporto fazendo sinal pros avioes sabe?!  Nao queeeeero. E hoje ainda descobri que essa mundanca aconteceu pq os velhos full-time fizeram uma peticao pedindo! q raiva! Tenho que lembrar sempre que existem piores... as do world showcase por exemplo!
• Gente famosa ate agora eu so vi o Daniel, cantor, brasileiro, cara de pudim... ele tava andando pelo Epcot um dia desses. Mas no The Seas ja foi o presidente do Epcot, os produtores do Animal Planet e uma familia do Extreme Makeover Home Edition. =)
• Esses dias fui testar a nova atracao da Kim Possible que vai ter no EPCOT. Muito legal participar disso antes de todo mundo, e vai ser mto legal, se der certo ehehehehe. Eh o seguinte: os guests vao ter uma missao, tipo, encontrar os inimigos da Kim Possible ou um segredo escondido. Pra isso eles vao recebendo pistas num celular que vai mandando pra diferentes pontos do World Showcase. Por exemplo, uma das instrucoes era: va ate o Pavilhao do Mexico e fique em frente a gaiola do papagaio. Quando vc chega la e aperta OK, o papagaio comeca a falar com vc. Eh mto incrivel o tanto de mudancas que fizeram, o tanto de detalhes que colocaram em casa pais. Agora... o teste foi com o parque fechado, sem ninguem nos pavilhoes. Quero ver com tudo lotado, vai ser meio complicado. Nessa sexta vou fazer um outro teste la, vamos ver hehehehe
• Ja teve inspecao aqui no meu apto. Passamos e ainda ganhamos balinhas. E nessa sexta tem de novo!!!
• Quanto a UCF... minhas primeiras aulas foram Theme Park e Guest Service. A de Theme Park foi muuuito boa, a de Guest Service poderia ter sido bem melhor se a professora nao fosse mto insuportavel. Agora estamos de "ferias" e quando voltarmos vou fazer Brand Management e Leadership.

Ainda tem muito mais coisa que eu to esquecendo. Conforme for lembrando vou escrevendo parte 2, 3 etc.

Cold, coz I have just been outside in this horrendously miserable weather...

Tired, coz Gavman and I finally went to sleep at around 6am and were promptly woken at 8am by shouts of "GET OUT OF BED AND CLEAR UP THE HOUSE!! HIS PARENTS ARE COMING HOME NOW!!" (very funny in retrospect!)

Cosa portare e cosa lasciare.

Non sarebbe molto più semplice se ci fosse qualcuno che, oggettivamente, decidesse cosa mi serve e cosa non mi serve? Qualcuno che non mi conosce, non sa nulla di me, della mia vita e di come mi è sfuggita “inavvertita come sabbia fra le dita” fino ad ora. Qualcuno che decida che il cappotto di lana va bene per le mezze stagioni a Venezia e che forse sarebbe meglio portare con se i pantaloni neri piuttosto che quelli viola perché si abbinano meglio a quel cappotto che… biribin biribin biribam!

Non si tratta solo di vestiti, prodotti da bagno, accessori, scarpe… ma di cuore.

Cosa portarsi?

Tutto ovviamente!

Lo so… Il bagaglio dell’anima è più capiente e leggero: è facile portarsi dietro tutto.

E perciò, incastonati fra le costole, mi porterò il mare fresco, limpido e azzurro. Mi porterò i tuffi dallo scoglio alto. Mi porterò le canzoni ed i sorrisi degli amici. Mi porterò le sbronze e le risate con quelle due deficienti che invece di studiare prima degli esami si ubriacavano ( =D ). E mi porterò il peso di Cozza che soffre e non lo fa vedere, che soffre e non mi chiama, ma che sa che a Venezia o a Noci sempre qui mi troverà, al suo fianco.

Questa è una specie di testamento… non si sa mai… se il vaporetto affondasse attraversando il Canal Grande almeno ci sarà qualcuno che sorriderà un po’ a leggere ‘ste cose che scrivo all’una di notte e che non dovrebbero neanche esistere e dovrebbero lasciare posto ad una stupida lista di cose che posso toccare con le mani.

A questo punto ho esaurito gli argomenti e rimane il posto solo per due ringraziamenti: uno, senza fare nomi, è per chi se lo merita e sente di meritarselo (la teoria è questa: se “tizio” o “caio” hanno i due requisiti, cioè che se lo meritano e sentono di meritarselo, allora se lo meritano davvero) e l’altro è per due delle ragazze (ormai quasidonne) che mi hanno accompagnata nell’ultimo periodo della mia vita che, ne sono sicura, è stato il migliore.

E tutto ricomincia da qui e “Non ci son mai problemi a farsi troppi problemi ah ah ah” (IHSV).

If I were ever given free reign at my public school (as opposed to GHP), I'd love to teach this novel both for the science & social studies content.  It goes heavily into (naturally) biology, physics, and some chemistry.  I would very much like to know how much of it still pans out as "true."  My guess is a lot.  Maths don't change (see Arcadia).   Nemo's crusade against different governments and his "Robin Hood"-like distribution of wealth sparks thoughts on 19th century Imperialism.   And, as I pointed out, it's readable.  It only has four characters to speak of:  Nemo, Arronax (our narrator), Ned, and Conseil (the narrator's... shall we say... manservant, who refers to himself as a "confirmed bachelor).   Nemo remains a mystery, but the three prisoners-after-a-fashion on the Nautilus develop, over the course of the novel, a distinct and realistic relationship.  The book wins for science, social studies, and lit. development.

But, of course, it has the nasty misfortune of being labeled "science fiction."  Of all the classics I can think of, only Frankenstein and 1984 don't suffer from the label.   Anytime I see a perfectly legitimate work which happens to be fantastic fiction looked down upon because it incorporates a flight of fancy, I think of Steven Spielberg.  He has a beautiful quote I have returned to many times over the years:

"The thing that always grabs me about science fiction, is it frees the imagination to journey anywhere it can imagine itself, and that's the basis of science fiction for me... It doesn't have boundaries... It doesn't fence you in....For me, speaking personally, it's the most liberating genre."

This applies to the Bradbury nicely as well (Bradbury, btw, unsurprisingly, wrote the forward particular edition of 20,000, and compares it to Moby Dick.   I didn't choose it for that reason, but it's interesting that he did so.

The introduction is as interesting, though maybe not as much fun, as the book.  Bradbury points out the similarities and differences between Nemo & Ahab.  Nemo is the Realist; Ahab the Romantic.  Each rebelling against America's industrialization of her natural resources.  I really need to read Melville's whale book in its entirety.

Finally, my quote for 20,000 comes from the beginning of the novel:

The engineer was once again called up.

"Have you reached your maximum pressure?"  asked the commander.

"Yes, sir," replied the engineer.

"Are the valves up to pressure?"

"Six and a half atmospheres."

"Get them up to ten."

This was an American order if there ever was one...

I so want to read Mysterious Island next because Nemo is such a good antihero (I have no idea why the book jacket of this edition refers to him as a villain).   Soon, soon.  It goes onto the list.

BUT!

I know this is a possible amazing film its on the same level on pixar or dreamworks films its amazing yet because I know that and don't want to screw it up. I'm sat here at my laptop thinking over and over what to write not wanting to analfie it, is that a word? meh. I need to get it perfect as it really is a seller. Bugger. Anyone with any ideas please tell me.

Increasingly I am writing these post's late at night but I really hate writing them at night though I suppose it is the right time to write them as they are normally about the specific day so writing it in the middle would be foolish.

There is so many things I want to do and I'm working my arse off to try and make it work. I'm working hard to try and make them work and I have so much more I want to do that need more research, on that note, nemo as soon as you read this about our "project" I have worked out what we are going to do. I can't wait for uni to start even if its likely I have to use the train for the first week, I should go see car tommorrow if I can on that note or at least thursday to see whats left to be done. Uni is really exciting time I get to get back into my routine of education.

Ahhh...I spent my first wonderful day at Epcot.  I had a very nice day!  Right when the park opened, I went straight for Soarin' to get a fastpass.  After that was out of the way, I went to Imagination with Figment, then the Seas with Nemo and Friends.  (Hey, I have all day - I might as well ride everything!).  Anyways, I won't go into the details of everything I rode, because I did ride everything...

Lunch was amazing!  I ate at Canada - and took my time to enjoy a delicious think and juicy steak.  I'm headed off to the World Showcase lagoon to walk off my dinner and to enjoy IllumiNations!  I don't know if I'll get to update every day, but I'll try to do it somewhat frequently.  Thanks for reading!

So todays awesomeness comes from Australia. Apparently scientists just discovered 500 new species in the coral reef off the coast of Australia....FIVE HUNDERED!!! Thats just wild. The coral reef is an insane place and the fact that we are still discovering vast amounts of life there is amazing. I was for scuba there about a year and a half ago and got to see the most incredible things. Rediuclously colored neon fish, I found Nemo in a sea anemnone, and I also swam next to a ten foot long sea turtle for a good ten minutes. The place is absurd. Sadly the reef is dying though, so GO NOW. Or help save the reef, I dunno how, but just do it.

I love the land of Oz, send me back now. I think I'll open up a paypal account for a "Send me back to Australia fund".

Husband's job? push the wide bus that we call a stroller. My job? lead the way. But it doesn't always work that way, esp when you have a husband who is highly competitive and can easily stray when he has another plan that he never let you in on! So I'm leading the way when I notice he loses sight of me. No, he does not stop to get his bearing but instead goes off on another path! WHY? such a man thing to do! Meanwhile, I can see that we are about to lost this race. I stop, get his attention, and we finally make it to the line. Let me tell you...we hauled butt! and we were not the first few...the wait was already 20 minutes! OMG! HOW? WHY? IS IT REALLY WORTH IT? In the midst of our made-up race, we almost lost our daughter. THE PANIC!!! I was waiting in line and husband was taking the kids out of the stroller and parking it when he tells my 2-year-old daughter to go find me in line. WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!!! so my cute lil daughter does just that...makes a beeline to the front of the line. It was a few seconds that we didn't know where she was but it was so frightening.

The big question...was it worth it? NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. My kids got scared that it was so dark in there...that the submarine shook when it went under...that scary, horrible, sharks with their mouths wide open and their sharp teeth exposed would pop out in the dark...Ugh. Well, at least now I know and I guess that makes me a better person.

Many cities throughout the world have their own version Science and Technology Centers, where visitors can come in and learn about science and technology through hands-on exhibits. The NEMO Science and Technology Center in Amsterdam has a constantly changing set of displays and experiments available and it is a perfect place to take the children to learn about how the world around them “works”. Of course, people of all ages can enjoy the facility and the informations that can be discovered in NEMO Science and Technology Center.
NEMO Science and Technology Center is located within walking distance of the Central Station and get there by Metro is the easiest way. It is a terrific place to spend a good portion of the day, especially if you are traveling with your children. NEMO Science and Technology Center building also has a curious an architectural style, with a large unique trapezoidal structure, painted in a vibrant green that stands out like a beacon amid in the old-world architecture of Amsterdam.
