The Liberal party lost the last election because Kevin Rudd was onto the rather clever strategy of doing exactly what the other guy does. In a country with compulsory voting and preferential voting the middle ground is the only thing that matters. The left people will end up voting ALP and the right people will end up voting liberal pretty much regardless of the political debate at the time. So the entire focus of a political party needs to be snapping up those middle of the road type people - and I'd consider myself one of them.

What the liberal party should have learned from the last election is that the middle is further to the left than they expected. So the obvious thing to do after taking a hammering in an election is re-invent yourself closer to the left - it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

But what they're doing on emissions trading (or the apology for that matter) is anything but.

The Federal Opposition has accused the Government of slugging consumers with more taxes and higher costs through its proposed emissions trading scheme and will not support a 2010 start-up date.

Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson says the cost of petrol, groceries and electricity will be pushed further up under the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, released by Climate Change Minister Penny Wong today.

I mean, they're onto an interesting point and they're saying the sorts of things that 40% of Australians want to hear. But what's the point? That 40% of Australians is going to vote for them regardless. They need to be saying things that 20% of Australians in the middle want to hear. And if you're not clever enough to figure that out, just say exactly what the other party is saying.

If Waikato is the food bowl of New Zealand as Lianne Dalziel said in justifying the appointment of former MP Dianne Yates to the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Board, then the province needs to improve its marketing.

I'd have accepted the cream can or horse racing capital, but Waitako wouldn't immediately come to mind if I was asked which province is the nation's food bowl.

If we're going for North Island entrants for the title Hawkes Bay with its wonderful fruit, vegetables, sea food and wine would be a finalist. The Bay of Plenty, Poverty Bay and Northland have a delicious range of fruit and vegetables too; and Wairarapa has wine and olives.

In the South Island, Central Otago can claim the country's best stone fruit, it has pip fruit and wine too. Nelson and Malborough also grow tasty fruit and have delicious sea food and wine. Canterbury produces tasty fruit and good wine too.

Oysters put Southland on the list, though I'm not sure if swedes would be counted for or against them :)

Lamb is legend in Hawkes Bay, Canterbury and Southland, though just about anywhere in New Zealand grows it just as well, and the same can be said for beef.

North Otago may not spring to everyone's mind as the culinary capital but we have a growing appreciation of our primary produce. There's a fledging viticulture industry, and Fleurs Place at Moeraki has woken our taste buds to the delights of local fish and sea food. Just as the cold winters add intensity of flavour to Central's stone fruit, the colder water enhances the flavour of fish, particularly blue cod.

Riverstone Kitchen , a finalist in the Cuisine restaurant of the Year, uses as much local produce as possible - including fruit, vegetables and herbs, from its own orchard and garden.

Wasabi is grown in the Waitaki Valley and it also produces very sweet strawberries, raspberries, loganberries, blackberries, tayberries and boysenberries.

Whitestone Cheese has an array of national awards to back up my ever so slightly biased view that they produce the country's best cheese.

Totara Lowlands sells the most succulent cherries I have ever eaten - they don't export so the pick of the crop is sold locally. Their hazelnuts and honey are also top quality.

While we're in that part of the the district, Totara and nearby Kakanui are renowned for the vegetables from their market gardens and there are simply no better new potatoes in the world than those which grow here. They are no ordinary spuds, they're more like underground strawberries.

If you don't understand how proud North Otago would be if we were called the nation's potato patch then you obviously haven't tasted the Jersey Bennies which grow here.

Hi All,
Today’s motivation comes from Nelson Mandela:
“The greatest glory in living lies

Hi All,

Today's motivation comes from Nelson Mandela:

"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."
— Nelson Mandela

I have something goofy to share with you. One night at work, the unthinkable happened to me...I fell. Isn't it embarrassing to have all your faculties about you one moment and in the next, you miss step or in my case, miss the stool I was sitting on, and take a tumble. When I fell, it was very embarrassing for me because since I work in a sports stadium, everyone was watching. Instead of getting angry or even crying, I laughed. Afterwards, I allowed all the men surrounding me to help me up. By the way, chivalry is not dead! What is the relevance of this you may ask? I use this little uneventful moment to illustrate the quote for today. When I fell, I wanted to stay on the ground but I couldn't. Something in me said no, you must rise and rise I did. While what happened to me is trivial, the fall of Mandela is not.

Mandela was just a college student during the years of oppression in Apartheid in South Africa when he decided enough was enough. He met the Dutch head on and fought against apartheid by heading up an illegal organization called the African National Congress (ANC). For many years, he fought against the oppression of the Dutch Government against Black South Africans. At one point, his work became so dangerous that he had to go underground. Sometime in the early 60's, he was caught and sent to the infamous maximum security Robben Island Prison . For more than 27 years, Mandela was imprisoned. Some may look at what he went through as a fall but Mandela did not.

He stayed strong during those years. He kept his mind sharpen and his body fit. He knew a day would come when the government would have to release him. In Feburary of 1990, , Mandela would rise and walked out of prison a free man, therein lies his glory! Later, in April of 1994, he would become the first Black South African to become President of South Africa. Why do I mention Mandela? Just recently, his countrymen and the world celebrated his 90th birthday. Since he refused to stay down, he rose and has lived a life of abundance and greatness!

There are times when we fall, this is a part of life. However, each time we fall, for whatever reason, we must get ourselves back up and rise! There is no glory in falling and staying down. In addition, nothing can be gained from staying down. The true success and the glory can be found in rising up. A phoenix always rises from the ashes and so can we.

By the way...I would like to take this opportunity and wish a Happy Early Birthday to Nelson Mandela (July 18th), a true phoenix!

ALTO

Cuba.

Wow.... here I was all prepared to apologize for not updating in forever and what do I see when I login? Apparently I updated yesterday. I have only a very vague memory of this and seem to have thought it was three or four days ago.......weird. Anyway here are my first pictures from college.
[gallery]
Tada! Yeah, yeah, I know they're random but I didn't think about taking pictures much so these are from those random times when my brain lit up and said "Hey! You have a camera in your phone!" Remember when that was rare? Anyway college is good so far. Only have three classes during the summer session.
Engineering & Design - Cool Professor (Pro. Nelson). No official credit :( Get to make catapult and other awesome stuff :)
Sociology 102- Dr. Asiedu nice (But had heavy accent so hard to understand her sometimes), fairly easy as long as you keep up with her, sociology pretty interesting (Although I think our text book may be trying to subconsciously influence us to commit suicide...... I mean really, for every single example it's suicide........)
Algebra 101- Thank God! This math is basically a review. What we're going over now I had in eighth grade! Of course it moves on and I probably need to review some of it to make sure I've got a solid start to college math instead of desperately trying to keep up. Oh and the teacher is totally cool. Pro. Barron is like a hyper-active teenager (In a good way!) who knows the exact way to explain math and still be funny.
Anyway I've got to go write a one page response to the question "What is a functionalist's sociological viewpoint towards sports?"..... no.....seriously......I'm not kidding......

Mon frère a donc changé la batterie (si tu me lis, merci frérot)!

I have three reviews of books about Collingwood in the pipeline; let me start with the oldest one. L

I have three reviews of books about Collingwood in the pipeline; let me start with the oldest one. Legally available for download on the internet, it makes an excellent resource for those of us who live on a tight budget. Being the geek that I am, I've made a colour print-out with ring-binding. Yes, I know. Don't mention it.

A FINE OLD ENGLISH GENTLEMAN,
EXEMPLIFIED IN THE LIFE AND CHARACTER OF
LORD COLLINGWOOD.

A Biographical Study by William Davies

The book is available as DjVu, PDF, TXT and, very handy, flip book

"(...) The writer of this just declination has seen him [Collingwood] upon deck without his hat, and his grey hair floating in the wind, whilst torrents of rain poured down through the shrouds, and his eye, like the eagle's, on the watch. Personal exposure, colds, rheumatism, ague - all seemed nothing to him when his duty called. (...)"

"(...) I'm an unhappy creature, old and worn out. I wish to come to England, but some objection is ever made to it. (...)"

"A Fine Old English Gentleman" dates back to 1875. Oddly enough, reading Collingwood's letters, most of them written 70 years before the publication, are far easier to read and understand than William Davies' narration. It's not only because I've become familiar with Collingwood's style by now; I also admit that I've always had problems enjoying Victorian writing style and language. Davies uses Collingwood's life to teach his readers a lesson. A moral one, a religious one, a patriotic one. I do see his point, I even agree with him on many of his statements, but as a person living in the 21st century, I find it very, very hard not to roll my eyes and groan when finding a marathon sentence like

"(...) Emancipated from the burdensome shackles and trammels of speculative generations, we shall meet the Great Captain and Example of all that a good and noble life ought to be face to face, clear in the fullness of that spiritual light by means of which we discern that rectitude and goodness have an intrinsic value far, far above anything to which they can lead us, or anything which they can bestow upon us, lovely and precious in and for themselves alone, and beggaring every other kind of wealth and happiness. (...)"

Eh - quoi? Let's rather stick to his statement that

"(...) About the necessity for, and value of, an earnest and upright life in all our affairs, thoughts, and actions, there can be no manner of doubt. Its value is never depreciated. Its elements never change. They were the same two thousand or ten thousand years ago as they are now. Time cannot alter or lessen their importance in the least degree. (...)"

I guess I could sign that.

Davies' way of expressing himself is pompous, yes, but that was the style of his days, and so you shouldn't let it keep you away from reading the book. If the author gets lost in his own sentences and exclamations of praise, then the reason is his great admiration and respect for Collingwood. It's an admiration and respect most people who try and study this great man's life will eventually share and find justified. Despite the cruel times he lived in, despite all the hardships and the horrors of war, Collingwood always kept his humanity; something which becomes once again very clear from his letters, some of which I have found for the first time in "A Fine Old English Gentleman".

We can read his thoughts on everything, from love to life to king to family; how to raise children, how to make midshipmen do some decent work, how to deal with unpleasant relatives - while some of his thoughts wouldn't sit well with our modern way of thinking, it's not difficult to see how "modern" his views were for the time he lived in.

Each of Collingwood's letters, be it about state affairs, war, his family or the gossip he loved so much are tiny pieces in a puzzle that can show us what kind of man Collingwood was. The puzzle will never be complete, we'll never know everything. Let's be grateful there is so much we do know; Collingwood gives the overused term "hero" some of its original meaning and value back. He's not ashamed of his fears; he admits and tries to overcome them. So he writes in a letter to his wife on 8 November 1808 that she "(...) cannot conceive how I am worried by the French (...)"; and he also adds:

"(...) Perhaps you might think I am grown very conceited in my old age, and fancy myself a mighty politician; but indeed it is not so. However lofty a tone the subject may require and my language assume, I assure you it is in great humility of heart that I utter it, and often in fear and trembling; lest I should exceed my bounds. (...)"

In this connection, I'd like to recommend the excellent article about Brutes, Wimps And Heroes" by Alex Beecroft over on the Macaroni-blog. Quite obviously, the "hero" dragging his hands on the ground is not as popular as many authors and movie makers seem to think. Manly men can be old gossips and show weaknesses as well!

I don't know where to start pointing out the little gems in this book, so here's just a small, random collection.

Collingwood's "Blue Peter" to bringing up your kids:

"(...) Your measures must be systematic: when they do wrong, never omit to reprove them firmly, but with gentleness. Always speak to them in a style and a language rather superior to their years. Proper words are as easily learned as improper ones. And when they do well, when they deserve commendation, bestow it lavishly. Let the feelings of your heart flow from your eyes and tongue (...)"

Collingwood about his health and age:

"(...) I'm pretty well pleased and thankful when I am not in pain, which, between the head-ache by day, and cramps by night, is no often the case. This mortal body of ours is but a crazy sort of machine at the best of times; and when old, it is always wanting repair; but I must keep it going as long as I can. (...)"

Collingwood about his request to the Admiralty to allow him to return to England, due to his poor health:

"(...) This was not a feigned case. It is true I had not a fever or a dyspepsy. Do you know what a dyspepsy is? I'll tell you. It is the disease of officers who have grown tired, and then they get invalided for dyspepsy. (...)"

"(...) Tough as I have been, I cannot last much longer. I have seen all the ships and men out two or three times. Bounce and I seem to be the only personages who stand our ground." (...)

Collingwood about Nelson:

"(...) Oh, had Nelson lived, how complete had been my happiness, how perfect my joy! Now, whatever I have felt like pleasure has been so mixed with the bitterness of woe, that I cannot exult in our success as it would be pardonable to do. (...)"

"(...) All the praise and acclamations of joy for our victory only bring to my mind what it has cost. (...)"

Collingwood's words of wisdom about fame:

"(...) Fame's trumpet makes a great noise but the notes do not dwell long on the ear. (...)"

Memorable also his statements about the King and Queen of Prussia, who had been driven from their throne and had to seek shelter - in an apothecary's shop:

"(...) The poor King and Queen of Prussia in an apothecary's shop! How reduced! And unable to get their breakfast until the bed is made! (...)"

And no book about Collingwood would be complete without at least one tale about his loyal dog Bounce, whom he obviously even sang to sleep...

"(...) Tell the children that Bounce is very well, and very fat, yet he seems not to be content, and sighs so piteously these long evenings that I am obliged to sing him to sleep (...)"

Of course all that might not be very interesting for those whose focus is on warfare and battle strategies. But for me, as a writer, it's essential to know how people work, how they think, how they feel, how they interact with each other. I observe, watch, notice all those little aspects of different personalities, and eventually, combine them to form a character.

Villains? They come twelve a dozen. Honourable men, on the other hand, are hard to find, but well - here is one. Enjoy the book.

All over the world some of the finest wines come from the estates that are firmly in family hands -

All over the world some of the finest wines come from the estates that are firmly in family hands - where the personal passions of family members drive the business. Nowhere would that be more true than in New Zealand's Nelson region. Nearly all the 20 or so producers are still firmly in family control and even the larger players are still owned and managed by family interests. There's not a major corporate in sight!

But in the pressurised environment of today's wine industry, retaining personal control can be difficult. Unless the business is determined to remain boutique in both size and outlook, the need for expansion brings all the problems associated with the increased investment and facilities. It's a conundrum that leads almost inevitably to the acquisition of shareholders or the sale of vineyards and plant to the larger pockets of national and international corporations.

But two of the larger wine producers in Nelson may have hit on a solution that enables them to retain their personal, "hands on" approach to their wines while at the same time providing a secure platform for their own and Nelson's expansion.

The first family is that of the Drummonds of Motueka, owners of Anchorage Wines.

Over the past 8 years Chris Drummond, his brother, father and brother in law have pioneered the Motueka area for grape growing with their first vines planted in 2000 and their first vintage under their own label in 2003.
With a background in orcharding that stretches back to the late 1800s they were well aware of the local horticultural environment and their viticultural efforts met with immediate success. Conversion of orchard land into vineyards has meant that their initial plantings of 20ha of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc have expanded to 45ha and they have another 20ha yet to plant. Viognier and a small amount of Pinot Noir have been added to their portfolio. With all the land in full production it will make them one of the region's biggest growers and a significant player not only on the Nelson scene but also nationally.

But with the expected expansion in production came the dilemmas of increased winery requirements and with the appointment of their own winemaker it was obvious to Chris that the establishment of their own facility was essential. A big call!

At the same time another family owned producer, Kahurangi Estate in Upper Moutere were facing similar dilemmas.

Greg and Amanda Day bought the old Seifried vineyards and winery in Upper Moutere in 1998 and have built the company to a stage where it has an extensive export portfolio and has increased production to the point where it is included in NZ Winegrowers catalogue as one of the "medium" category wineries with production of more than 200,000 litres of wine (more than 20,000 cases). They make two ranges. The premium range includes Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Merlot under their Kahurangi Label while entry level wines under their Trout Valley label include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir with Pinot Gris to be added for the 2008 vintage.

But with this increased production Kahurangi needed greater winery capacity. "As an example of our increased growth I'm already out of 2007 Sauvignon Blanc," Greg comments. "And I could certainly have sold more if I had had the capacity to make it. So as our own winery at Kahurangi came under increasing pressure from expanding volumes we could see a need not only for an outlet for our own increased yields but also the opportunity for a processing facility for many of the smaller producers in Nelson."

"I'd considered building a new winery on our Moutere site but it would have taken considerable work to ensure resource consent and it would not have fitted in well with the more boutique flavour of our cafŽ and tasting room or the characterful accommodation that we offer at our present winery site. So I was looking at finding an existing facility that could perhaps be converted."

"But in a serendipitous moment through contact with Justin Papesch, the newly appointed winemaker at Anchorage, the possibility of a joint venture winery and production centre was mooted. I had originally thought of a relatively small winery but once I met Chris and we talked it through, a partnership with Anchorage in a winery that would not only serve us both but also provide a contract facility for the Nelson area seemed the only way to go."

As a result of their discussion Torrent Bay Vintner's was born. Chris had access to a large packing shed that was admirably suited to conversion with cool handling and storage areas already in place, Both families are more than pleased with the results of their efforts.

"It enables us to retain our individuality and keep control of our own wines while at the same time pooling resources and even winemaking experiences," says Chris. "If there are problems or if there is the need for consultation not only can we call on both the Kahurangi and the Torrent Bay winemakers but we can also add the experience of Greg and myself."

Both families appreciate the fact that the new winery is on "their side" of town and that their fruit can be in the winery within minutes. Chris comments that he has noticed an immediate increase in quality since he has been able to get fruit into the winery straight from the vineyard without it having to be trucked over the hill to the crushing facility in Marlborough.

This year Torrent Bay crushed about 450 tonnes of Anchorage and Kahurangi fruit as well as some on contract for local suppliers. "We'll probably be up to around 700 tonnes capacity next year," says Chris. "And we already have a potential capacity for around a 1000 tonnes. It would be possible to expand to more than 2000 tonnes in the future but weÕll have to see what the demand is before we look at those sort of figures."

In the meantime the partnership seems to be working well. Greg has a nearby custom made winery for his increasing export production and is likely to make Torrent Bay facility the home base for his Trout Valley label.

At the same time Chris and his family at Anchorage have secured a long term home for the increased production they are expecting from their new plantings. And Nelson has a "top of the line" juicing and crushing plant that makes the smaller producers in the area less reliant on the vagaries of the Marlborough facilities. To mangle a cliche even further - it's win - win - win? MG

The commentary surrounding each by-election from the major media outlets was very predictable and sa

The commentary surrounding each by-election from the major media outlets was very predictable and sadly very boring.

While much has been said and written about the Kororoit by-election being a test for Brumby's leadership I think the real test was for the Liberals. Labor was always going to hold the seat of Kororoit (something I had to reluctantly admit last week) so it was really a campaign to see if the Liberals and Ted Baillieu had the capacity to mount an effective campaign. For Brumby it really was a snapshot of how the electorate is feeling towards his leadership style but it shouldn't be extrapolated into how the ALP will go in the 2010 Victorian elections.

The Liberals spent a considerable amount of resources funding the Kororoit by-election despite it being such a safe ALP seat. From the newspaper advertising spend to getting notable Senators out on polling day, the Liberals wanted to make a big splash.

Indeed the Gippsland by-election was similarly a test of the conservative parties. Although with a swing against the Government as large as the one recorded it seems as though the Gippsland by-election was an indicator of Rudd's performance. It was a very old-style campaign with new Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester, blowing the dust off the 1950's campaign manuals and using them as his main play books.

Both by-elections showed that the Liberals do have some fuel in the campaign tank, and that they have deeper pockets then they've been letting on. Baillieu and Nelson should be sleeping a little more easy after strong polling results in both Kororoit and Gippsland.

While passing through Nelson, B.C. -- which bills itself as the #1 small arts community in Canada -- I happened upon the Craft Connection artist cooperative, which operates a brand new retail arts outlet on the main street in Nelson.

It's a huge and beautiful space, jammed full of locally produced artwork. It's well lit, spacious and inviting -- a real professional job. There's even an art gallery in the basement beneath; the guy I talked to there said it's far from being able to pay for itself, and the co-op was mulling over various plans for the space. (The artist, I discovered at a play later that night, is also an actor. I remarked upon this when I met him on the street the next day, and he shrugged and said, "Anybody in the arts out here has to piece together a living.")

I talked with one of the founding artists (in the pink shirt), and got quite a bit of background on the co-op, which officially opened its doors only about a month before I visited. It replaced an older shop the co-op had been renting for, I think, about 15 years. (The co-op itself has existed for 25 years.) They finally decided to bite the bullet, bought the new space, and in the space of three weeks gutted it and rebuilt it for the opening.

Very inspiring, but I wonder whether we have the artistic output on the West Coast. The gallery has 14 full members, but about 70 people showing their work on a consignment basis.

Below, some graffiti from the walls of Nelson.

Ok folks it seems that everyone in the country is confused.

I spoke to a 5 year old the other day (yes not all of them are scared of me) and when I asked this little sample human who the president was... the kids answer was "Nelson Mandela" ... yes dahlink we all wish this was the case but alas no.

The new word these days is "kill" normally used in the context of "We will kill for Zuma" (Zuma is next in line presidentosser). When put on the spot about this new chant and slogan of the youth league, Julius Melagomaniac Malema states that there is nothing wrong with getting the youth to chant about killing, besides apparently according to him, it is all Mandela's fault for breaking free from Apartheid... Huh? For the record the word "kill" now means "support till death" ... much like Nazi days, yes?

It seems our Government don't even know who's who in the zoo or rather jungle. I am however extremely surprised that the current leading party hasn't blamed the mistake on the opposing team stating "It is the DA's fault, they tried to manipulate the system to gain favours". Sorry just that would be a pot calling the kettle black.

Mr Presidentosser your nation solutes you and the rest of Africa want's your ass fired... "Zimbabwe's leaders were approaching their country's complex problems in a serious manner "in order to arrive at a stable solution. I'm glad to say that the leaders of Zimbabwe... are approaching this matter in that way," he said... sorry erm come again? *shrug* Yers I will kiss your shoes sir but please please don't infect me with politicus-bullshiticus cause I've had all my inoculations I swear!

Okay, picture the scene. You're possibly the world's most famous former political prisoner. You have lousy taste in shirts. You really can't dance, though you are quite willing to give it a shot. You're the former president of South Africa, the first to be elected in fully representative democratic elections -- and your 90th birthday is only a couple of weeks away. Life is pretty good. Everything is looking far more positive than it once did.

And then this happens.

Wouldn't you want them to take you back to that island, lock you up and throw away the key?

I know I would.
