It was early spring, and I was shooting in a park filled with canyons, streams and waterfalls. This dried Maple leaf had made it through the winter intact and landed on a shallow, clear, slow-moving stream. At first I was uncertain of what I was seeing, as it looked like two separate objects. Finally, I realized that the sun was casting a distorted shadow of the leaf on the bottom of the stream bed. Since it was gliding downstream, I had to move quickly to capture the image while it was still in position. If you look at the bottom of the photograph you will see a slight rippling of the water. This is where the leaf was headed on its’ way downstream where the water was not so crystal clear and calm. I was very fortunate to have captured this image, and it is certainly one of the most interesting in my collection.
I’ve been hearing a lot about the new game called Spore, and though I haven’t played it,

I've been hearing a lot about the new game called Spore, and though I haven't played it, there seems to be definite academic potential. What is Spore, you say? Basically, it's a creation by Will Wright, the creator of all the SimCity enterprises, and it's billed as the ultimate SimEvolution game. Create a creature, watch it evolve, determine its path to civilization.

There's a whole lot of potential to explore here. Biologically speaking, I can see a tool for extrapolating, hypothesizing animal/organism behavior based on how an organism is constructed. Described in this Wired article:

Before you even begin the Cell stage, you have to make a decision: Is your little guy an herbivore or a carnivore? This can have lasting repercussions throughout the rest of the game. As a carnivore, the easiest way to get meat is to attack your fellow creatures. This turns your bacteria into kind of a jerk, and when he evolves, he'll be more suited to being an aggressive land animal. Establishing dominance with violence will be easier than trying to reason with other creatures. And if you take this path of least resistance throughout the rest of the game, you'll be a warlike, spacefaring race of jerks in no time, just because your aquatic ancestors went on the Atkins diet eons ago.

What's cool is that some researchers already have their game on. This video from National Geographic shows us just how geeky us academics can be in creating the "ultimate animal". Can spore be partially integrated into the life science curriculum?

I guess Spore isn't just for science freaks as well. Like all Sim(...) games one must carefully decide the social science angle in determining the anthropological, sociological and political ramifications in the civilization stage, even if such a term can be said to exist in real, non-virtual life. My guess is that this segment of the game will devolve into the typical hulk-smash warmongering typically seen in most Sim games.

Even though Spore may try to be everything for every player, it does seem to set up an interesting template for game designers, simulation programmers to share with scholars in the academic sphere. I'm curious to find out where on the evolutionary scale librarians enter the picture.

From a National Geographic photoshoot of right whales:

One whale repeatedly swam within inches of photographer Brian Skerry and assistant Mauricio Handler (pictured) as they dived off the Auckland Islands. "It looked at me with great curiosity," Handler says. "No aggression."

Quite a photo - though if that were me on the right, I would have instantly soiled myself. Imagine having something that size swim right up to you... Though it must also have been an amazing experience.

La urma urmei, asta are, asta dă.

Cultura inculturii, evident.
“Hey, are you looking at me?” Probably the most common question asked of me throughout high scho

“Hey, are you looking at me?” Probably the most common question asked of me throughout high school. You know that time in your life when you are trying just to fit in. Thanks to my to my random wandering eye and their uncommon yellow colour, I felt I had no chance but to be, that girl.

Both my brother and I were born with Amblyopia, otherwise known as lazy eye, passed down from our dad. Luckily, unlike our dad we were able to have surgery and spent our kindergarten years as one eyed pirates to correct the problem. Throughout my childhood no one noticed my difference but that is the innocence of children isn’t it?

Despite the set backs of high school, only recently I decided to embrace my wandering eye and the unusual colour. Just as the famous Afghan woman on the cover of National Geographic, this is part of what make me beautiful. The rest comes from within.

My dad's grandfather believed he caused the eye condition. In WWI, he had his eye shot out and was left in the pile of dead. Another solider heard him moan and pulled him out. Afterwards he spent months in a hospital. Everyone back home had been told he was dead until his brother, also a soldier, heard a rumor he was alive. When his brother arrived at the hospital where he was said to be, they wouldn't let him in. Upon threatening to punch the guard he was let in and saw his brother was in fact alive. Imagine after all that trauma and surviving despite the odds, when it was discovered his grandson (my dad) had a lazy eye, he blamed himself.

His story makes me think of Edgar Cayce and the belief of our past lives attribute to our current existence. Perhaps rather then believing in my great-grandfather's curse, maybe in a previous life I was involved in something that created my eye condition. Also both my dad and brother were there as well which can buy into the idea that our souls are connected far beyond nowdays understanding.

Whatever it may be for the past, present and future, today, for me, is to continue as I am.
As for my eyes, the windows to my soul and now, my very best feature.
This little light of mine, I am gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

Happiness,

Trip Advisor has just launched an online campaign to allow its users to decide which five organizations that help "places and people" receive a $1 million donation. The five organizations are Conservation International, Doctors Without Borders, National Geographic, Nature Conservancy, and Save the Children. Several things strike me with this tactic:

A big online travel company is aligning its mission with non-profits (the alignment is not new, but that's it's a major online travel company).

They've defined organizations that help "places and people" as those primarily related to environment and health on an international scope (nothing wrong with these organizations, just that historic sites, cultural heritage, and historic preservation organizations were not finalists).

The message is simple and fast, and comes from the CEO.

It involves its "members" in making the final decision. That's a Web 2.0 strategy that the NTHP has used in its Partners in Preservation Program.

It emphasizes the "why" rather than what or who: "With over 15 million reviews and opinions from real travelers, TripAdvisor believes in the power of the collective voice. We also believe you can leave more than your footprints behind when you travel – by making a difference in your community and the places you visit."

We'll see how this plays out, but their tactics may be useful to historic sites as they build support for their efforts.

this guy is a friend of one of my best friends. i met him at a dinner party one of the matts threw

this guy is a friend of one of my best friends. i met him at a dinner party one of the matts threw and i noticed him giving me the eyes a lot of the time. he is tall, dark, classically handsome and kind of dresses like an old man traveling overseas. khakis, a button-up, maybe a sweater vest with canvas sneakers or old school new balances....get it?

anyway, he was super nice, and i invited him to a few things after that, none of which he could attend (he travels a lot for work). so, i cool on him, figure he just wants an awesome chick to hang out with once in awhile. well, then he asks me to go to the movies with him. ok. sure. this was may of this year, and i suggest seeing the newest indiana jones that was coming out. he says "sure" and then the day of the date he suggests going to "silverdocs" which is a documentary film festival in silver spring. again, i'm agreeable, and i drive out to silver spring to meet him. i ask him for directions to the theatre and he says "google that shit!" hm. ok.

so, i get there and get in line. he shows a few minutes later. he gets my ticket, that is nice, and we go see a 2 hour, completely subtitled documentary on stolen media in iran. yup. not exactly indiana jones, but it is interesting, and somewhat entertaining, and the chair wasn't THAT hard. ok, the chair was that hard.

afterward we go and grab some guinnesses at a local pub. he starts talking about the latest project he is working on for work. he's going to be traveling to new york to produce a special on genetic migrations and find out how people from different lines ended up there.

or something.

national geographic then clarifies....or tries to....and says something like "well, we can map a path of migration by the mutating mitochondria that occurs every 500 generations in the human genome."

or something.

now, i'm no dummy, but wtf.

i mean, it IS interesting....to someone else. i'm sure. but i would be dishonest if i said it didn't mostly go over my head.

i tell him about what i do, how i love seeing patients get better, recover, get their mobility and lives back. and i am just me. i'm not trying to impress him with obscure terms that i haven't heard since biology classes in college. i'm just being me. being nice, sincere and open.

i don't want to seem like i don't care about what national geographic is working on. that isn't it. but, a job is a job. it doesn't necessarily define or describe someone. what i want to know is why you love it or hate it. how do you feel about people you meet along the way? what makes your world turn? what you are learning and why it is making the world better?

i had a nice time, and i love intellectual banter, but i was exhausted after this. and i still didn't feel like i had gotten to know him.

how will national geographic ever understand why ghostbusters is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time? or why gremlins is my favorite christmas movie? i don't think it would work.

national geographic fits nicely into the friend category, and that is where he'll stay.

**btw, bob took me to see indiana jones opening night. we also saw iron man and the dark knight, and he makes me laugh so hard my stomach hurts when i'm with him. bob also asked me to come over thurs night...i didn't go. he asked me to stay at the barbeque longer on sunday, and i left. go me.

**i also hung out with vegas last night. watched the game until it ended. so glad the steelers won, but disappointed that it took until overtime to do it. we made tentative plans about breaking in my new dvd player by watching wayne's world, but nothing set yet.

I "grandi vecchi".

I'm kinda into geography. Okay, really into geography. My favorite "game-where-everyone-wins" is seeing how many African countries I can write down in under two minutes. I also love calling Asian capital cities as a category when playing Circle of Death. Swoon.

That's why National GeoBee online quiz is tops. Yes, it is technically designed for middle school students to prepare for the National Geographic Bee. But it is so much more than that. Who else asks you to type the following countries from largest to smallest with respect to total landmass: Sudan, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone? Or which country exports more sugar cane, Chad or Guatemala? Brilliant.
