I was waiting in line at a county fair and noticed that the various lines were in the shape of a cross within a square.  The line began moving, and I was able to cut in front of the line because Fred was the director of my section.  In order to get into the event, we had to wear photo I.D. around our necks.  My mother flirted with the photographer as she got her picture taken, and I posed on a wooden lawn chair for my picture.  When I turned my right shoulder in for the pose, I noticed my upper arm was littered with dark hair.

After the pictures, we entered a convenient store/lodge which was owned by Ceci's parents.  It was nearing sundown, and Ceci needed to lock up the store.  I rushed through the aisles on a quest for Raisin Bran, but soon remembered that I'd be getting a box the following afternoon.  Ceci and I went into the lodge to turn off a few lights.  We went down a corridor with a door at the end that led back to the convenient store.  Before we stepped through the door, Ceci rearranged the doormats; there were seven or eight mats in a pile.

We entered the door to the store and heard the photographer speak to the group about the pros and cons of his profession.  I grabbed something quick to eat before meeting up with the group who waited around the corner.  As I made my way toward them, I noticed a dead black rat on the floor.  A few members of the group began shrieking.  It was fairly dark in the store, but I was able to make out a rat running around with a trap on its tail.  I lost sight of it for a moment, then it brushed up against my ankle.  To calm the group, the photographer killed the rat.

A knock at the door froze the group's chatter.  A tattered pig-like mask was framed by the door's window.  There was a medium sized mirror on an adjacent wall that reflected a different mask from the window.  The mask in the mirror was of a scarecrow.

I realized that I was inside a glass case, and although the masked man could see me, I felt somewhat safer in there.  I called out to the photographer and said, "That's guy is back."  He replied in an unfamiliar Italian accent, "He has a name.  ________   ________." (I couldn't recall the name when I woke up, but it wasn't one of those "John Smith" ones.  Russian, maybe.)

Crazy thing is, I think the eyes behind the mask were intently staring at me alone.

Apart from the stupid names celebrities give their children, like Coldplay's lead singer who said..

Um what, naming your child after a fictional woolly alien is no stranger than Sarah! What planet are you on, oh wait, planet-too-much-money-and-no-sense.

And don't get me started with silly spelling of names. God only knows why but some people clearly don't feel special enough so they think that spelling their names differently will make them 'different', or maybe it's just because they can't spell. If you've changed the spelling of your name, say from Kylie to Kylee, Kyleigh, Kiley, Kyley, get a grip, the only thing you've proved is that you're a twit that can't spell.

Back to the real reason for this post, it's been around for a while but it's parents who are stoned, or maybe just stupid giving names to their kids that will without any doubt lead to their lives being a complete misery, or as a Judge described it, essentially child abuse. I've heard the ones about Holden and Ford, but how about this selection...

Fish and Chips (twins), Masport and Mower (twins); boys Yeah Detroit, Spiral Cicada, Kaos, Stallion and Hitler; girls Cinderella Beauty Blossom and Twisty Poi; and sex unknown Keenan Got Lucky and Sex Fruit.

You're probably thinking "only in America" right? well no, the muppets who gave their kids these names are right here in New Zealand. WTF is going through someones head to call their kid 'Sex Fruit'? Maybe in addition to licencing people to own dogs we should be licencing people to have kids, because clearly some people think it's a bit of a joke!

So people, if you're thinking of giving your kid a name based on a food, consumer product, or hated historical figure, take a deep breath and a cold shower and then go to a web site which has real human names on it and pick something that isn't going to make their life a misery, and when you pick one leave the spelling alone and don't screw with it!

the paths you take in life, the decisions you made - from the simple flavors of ice cream you want, to the person that you go out with, and the person that you plan to be with.  those are the things that your name own.  for me, i will never be K if i don't like pink, and strawberry ice cream.

when you ask my friends, "who is k?" they would definitely say something that would not only describe me physically but also in the way they knew me.  what we believe in and what our stand in life are the values that shape us.  so be careful with the values that you cultivate, it will always be remembered with your name which brings us to...

3. reputation.  

this is something that goes with your name until your last breath.  i remember the power of a good name can change a lot of things.  this is where people who do not know you personally base their judgements of you.

but before all these, make sure to remember one very important thing.  one must accept the name that they were given.  you cannot own something you can't accept.

Joe Riemann bestowed one simple name, and in return received overflowing blessings and a beautiful name for himself.

The name he received from members of a grateful immigrant community in the Twin Cities is “Jalata,” meaning “One who loves.”

As for the simple and single name that he bestowed, bear with me, this will sound implausible but it is absolutely true.

Riemann distributes Ethiopian coffee to food cooperatives in Minnesota, and he recently changed the label on vacuum-packed bags of the coffee beans he sells from “Organic Ethiopian” to “Organic Oromian.”

The Oromo have immigrated to Minnesota over the past 15 years, fleeing what they say is brutal repression and ethnic cleansing of their group by the present Ethiopian regime – claims that are fully backed up by human rights groups. A Human Rights Watch Report in 2005 reported “pervasive human rights violations” and documented hundreds of cases of torture, arbitrary detention, surveillance, and harassment of Oromo citizens.

The systematic suppression of political influence and cultural expression — Oromo history is not taught in Ethiopian schools, for example — is what makes the appearance of the Oromo name on bags of coffee grown in Oromia so genuinely and deeply moving, Oromo Minnesotans say.

“It touches your heart, it’s so powerful,” said Lense Solomon, an Oromo native and the president of the Oromo Student Union. “The Oromo have been repressed for so long, their labor unrewarded, their history wiped out, that to have the Oromo name on their own coffee, that’s huge.”

“It’s like the difference between being called ‘you,’ and being called by your real name,” she added. “It makes you feel proud to be acknowledged.”

The change has been good for business too, according to Barth Anderson, a spokeman for the Wedge food cooperative in Minneapolis. Sales of the coffee have increased about 30 percent since the label change, he says, and some Oromo have brought their families and children into the store to pose in front of the “Oromia Organic” coffee bags on the shelves.

“It’s almost embarrassing how gushing they are in their gratitude,” Anderson said. “They tell me, ‘Thank you for being so brave, to acknowledge what we are going through and to stand with us.’”

Riemann says the idea to change the name began at a showing of the documentary film, “Black Gold,” about Oromia coffee farmers in Ethiopia, that he organized as “a bit of Equal Exchange outreach” to potential Ethiopian customers from the area, especially Oromo.
