Hello.

Like every summer holiday i've been struck by the mental and physical disease which is extreme bordom. It's only been 4 weeks and all ready my freinds are fed up of having to meet me and i have been stuck at home for several days now. So i have decided to do 101 things that you and i think may stop this terrible mess and improve or completly ruin my life (depending on your views of me)

Today i have completed or at least attempted 3 i have...

1. Attempted to write a song heres what i've come up with
Bordem a bor..deeem bordem
(This i then worked out was all ready a song by the buzzcocks) So i wrote
I'm so lonely ( i did this in a american accent trying to do a north korean accent) i then yet again realized this was all ready a song so i decided singer song writer was not my carer.

2. I attempted to make a youtube video, however with no video camera or any equipment for filming i then realized i would have to make a video camera and you probally won't be suprised to find that i falied with in about half an hour of smashing my toaster with a rock.

3. I made a blog. This so far seems to have worked.

So i can safely say i can cross one of my list of 101. So if you have been reading this and want to help me please send me something to do (anything) and i promise i will do my best to achevie it and if i do then i will take one off my list my goal to complete a hundred in 6 weeks. And if your bored yourself then you can read my blogs i will be hopefully writing and you can do one of the things yourself and then the world in my opinon will be a better place. Please send me ideas. Thank you.

P.S Please hurry i found myself watching an episode of Jeremy Kyle today i have already seen.

P.SS. I've just realised it might be more fun to send something you do when your bored to stop it thanks.

I'm the type of girl who, even though I look like I shoved a soccer ball under my shirt, wants to look good while pregnant. That's where rockstarmoms.com comes in.

On the front page of the site, there is a speaker that plays the sound of a baby's heart. Or at least that's what i think it sounds like. Fade out to a pregnant woman holding a guitar.

When you enter the site, there are many different items to catch your interest. My favorite would have to be the Floating Baby shirt.

A lot of the shirts are centered towards, yep, you guessed it! Music. But not just any music. Good music. Shout out your love of music, and your love of your unborn child in one shot!

Be chic AND pregnant at the same time!

i would have to give this site four thumbs up. Two from me, and two from Jordan.

This year we planted a vegetable garden at home and we are now beginning to harvest. We have lots of cucumbers, some green bell peppers, swis chard and even corn. We really enjoyed planting this garden and next year we plan on expanding it.

In honor of our wonderful garden, today's favorite lyric is The Garden Song by David Mallet. The song has been recorded by many people, most notably John Denver, Arlo Guthrie and Peter Paul & Mary. Here are the lyrics:

Chorus:

Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
'Till the rain comes tumbling down.

Pulling weeds and pickin' stones;
Man is made of dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own,
'Cause the time is close at hand.

Grain for grain, sun and rain,
Find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain,
To the music from the land.

Plant your rows straight and long,
Temper them with a prayer and song.
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her love and care.

An old crow watching hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree.
And in my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there.

Repeat Chorus:

Anytime I find a video that includes the Muppets that is for sure the one I am going to include. Here is John Denver singing the garden song on an episode of The Muppet Show.

Enjoy

Recently, my career as a web development engineer has taken a huge turn for the better. But it has also affected my ability to set aside some time to play guitar. Because of my weird schedule this past week (luckily it's an anomaly), I haven't picked up a guitar since Tuesday, and I've got serious emotional withdrawals going on!

My home office doubles as my studio, and I've gone in there to follow up on personal e-mails each night, and look longingly at my axes sitting pretty in their stands. But duty calls, plus the bed, since I've actually been too tired to play - can you imagine that?!!!

Oh well... such is life, and while I know from past experience that things go in cycles, it doesn't mean I like it just the same...

So the other day I was asked what my favorite bands were, after I fervently claimed that although I am always on the hunt for new music, I do indeed have some old standards. And here they are:

Alexi Murdoch This man has an unbelievable level of inner peace, but his songs are nothing but static. Candid lyrics and blissful melodies make me feel closer to enlightenment every time I listen.

Coldplay Although I hate the fact that every sentient being in the universe seems to like them now, I just can't help but adore Coldplay. They're just too good. And the release of Viva La Vida proves that they are only getting better.

Counting Crows If Adam Duritz's hair is not enough reason to like this band, their constantly melancholic lyrics should more than suffice. Once you get past hackneyed tracks such as "Mr. Jones" and "Accidentally in Love," you cannot help but be drawn in by the unapologetic raw emotion.

Damien Rice Damien Rice wrote the book on inner anguish--and often very vocal outer anguish. I am consistently amazed by the way he can so effectively describe my sentiments. And he's Irish (bonus!)

The Envy Corps I saw them open for Eisley, and I was completely hooked. Somehow, they have managed to achieve the perfect mixture of pop and misery. Also, they use words like skein. Really, my friends, it does not get any better than this.

Feist Ps. I love her. The end.

Regina Spektor "That Time": anthem of my life. I pretty much want to become her quirky, redheaded, Chucks-wearing self.

Honorable mentions go to:

Bela Fleck & the Flecktones - banjo + jam band = a mighty good time

Dave Matthews Band - one word: live

Eisley - secretly I would like to join them (I can sing Trolly Wood; does that count?)

Enya - Celtic relaxation perfection

Iron & Wine - if you don't know why they are awesome, you need to take awesome lessons

Mates of State - cheeky, pop-y wonderfulness topped with a dollup of true love

Nada Surf - I like what they say, I like what they say

Newsboys - 1. Australian 2. witty 3. Christian band that actually makes the industry look good

Pinback - just plain good stuff

The Raconteurs/The White Stripes - to me, there is very little difference between these two, but I am ok with that

Rogue Wave - their melodies are out of this world, many a ringtone has been taken from their songs

Sufjan Stevens - he's kind of hit or miss with me, but when he hits, he hits so hard I have him on repeat

I will probably think of additions to this list in about 3 minutes, but I think I will leave it at that. Needless, to say, I am always love-love-loving new bands, but I tried to only include the ones I have some history with.

Oh, and my stylist totally loved my bangs. Said they were "darling" (not exactly the reaction I was looking for, but I'll take it). Ergo, I felt like I had sufficiently stuck it to the man that day.

The result are nuggets of knowledge and pics like the ones on the righthand side of this page--which, if you click on them, will take you to the Flickr page, where there are even more to look at. Our latest additions to the collection are of the Beatles cover band the Silver Hammer Band and of punk-rock veterans the Adrenals at their farewell concert. Hope you enjoy.

On the 18th, I went to Drayton Manor Theme Park for an end of the year trip with the school. It was heaps of fun even though the queues were so absurdly long that I'd only been on about 5 rides by the end of the day. There were people from all over visiting the park. It was really interesting listening to all the different accents. When we went on the Black Revolver *, James Blunt's 1973 was playing and that made me really happy.

The Apocalypse wasn't as scary as it used to be but my photo still came out horribly.

* The Black Revolver is like a crazy version of the teacups. It's in an enclosed room with blacked-out windows, some disco lights and really loud music.

Near one of the queuing areas was a sign saying that all queue-jumpers would be removed by DMP. I couldn't figure out what DMP stood for. Dangerously Mad Police? Dutch Members of Parliament? Yeah, it was Drayton Manor Park.

It was Daniel Radcliffe's birthday on the 23rd. I sent him a letter because that's what I do and even if I don't get a personal reply, the (photocopy of the) signed photographs I get sent every year are kinda worth it.

Here is a link to a website I love: http://www.eduplace.com/tales/ . It's so funny.

As most of you know, I listen to a lot of foreign music (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, and French), but lately, I've been listening to a lot of my favorite Spanish artists. I'm going to list out the artists I listen to and if any of you have suggestions on any new good songs by them, please let me know. It's time I update my iPod list which is like 4 years old. So, here are the artists I love in no particular order:

Mana
Sin Bandera
La Oreja de van Gogh
Alejandro Sanz
Chocolate
Luis Fonsi
Paulina Rubio
Thalia
Laura Pausini
Carlos Vives
Glup
Stereo 3
Ataque 77
Jandy Feliz
La Ley
Reik
Mecano
Cristian Castro
Shakira

Most of the songs I listen to by these artists are from five or six years ago, and I've kept up a little with some of them, but I'm very out-of-date with a lot of them. The song I posted is called "Sirena" by Sin Bandera. This song hit #1 in 2001 when they first debuted! Gosh, I love this two-man group.

Anyways, I can't believe I actually missed posting an entry yesterday. I think I'm uninspired these days. I really never know what to write about anymore. I think my brain has flown to Rio de Janeiro for an extended vacation. Speaking of which, that is my next destination...or at least, I'm going to try. I was watching the Travel Channel a few days ago, and it was a "Top 20 Sexiest Beaches" or something like that, and Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro landed the number one spot. Haha, I plan on going there with binoculars and a camera to see how "sexy" this beach can be. The lifeguards may have to escort me off the beach if I end up getting too creepy and stalkerish.

I was in Whole Foods the other night purchasing Hot Red Pepper jelly to go with my Port Salut cheese and water crackers, and there was this older Chinese wife and husband letting hell loose in the store. I mean, they were screaming at each other in Chinese in front of everybody. I was scared they were going to start pulling each others' hair out. Well, as I was happily skipping towards the cashier with my pepper jelly, this man taps my shoulder and says to me, "Jesus, what are they fighting about?" I wanted to crush the jar of my jelly over his head but realized I was too hungry to sacrifice it. I smiled (fuming inside, of course) and said, "I didn't catch the whole thing, but I think I heard the wife say something about how she discovered her husband has another family in China." The man looked at me all confused and asked if I was serious. I stopped smiling and said "no" very rudely. I told him just because I'm Korean doesn't mean I understand Chinese, and he said he didn't know I was Korean. I barked at him saying how he shouldn't have assumed I was Chinese in the first place. I abruptly turned back around and proceeded towards the cashier and muttered "ignorant" under my breath. He then mumbled "bitch," which, oh well, I guess I can be one at times. I do not tolerate people's ignorance anymore.

Ok, happy Friday! I hope everybody has a fantabulous weekend. ^_^

I bought this album after they played Frankenstein on the podcast (which is probably my favorite song on the album).

I am reminded of a cross between the Beatles (it helps that 'Losing You' is a John Lennon cover) and Bright Eyes (with a touch of Radiohead thrown in for good measure). The music is great for working to, very mellow, slightly retro (with electronic details), heavily British and fun. I do have to warn you, if you don't like slightly depressing music, this album is not for you. There are not a whole lot of up beat, peppy songs to jam to. This album is a bit more pensive and slightly down. I tend to like music like that, so this album suits me very well. Check it out, maybe you'll enjoy it too!

Some of you may already be familiar with Kim Ann Foxman's jewelry line, which has graced the pages of Nylon, XLR8R and Paper Magazine. She has been producing her Brooklyn-based jewelry line for a few years now, and her current line features a bevy of shields with animal iconography etched on them.

They are available in both sterling silver and gold and can be purchased directly from Kim by emailing her at info@kimannfoxman.com. They can also be purchased at Opening Ceremony NYC, Base in Miami and Silverman Gallery in San Francisco.

You may also be familiar with Kim Ann from the group Hercules and Love Affair, who are currently touring the US behind there debut album out on DFA. This is the hottest act to come out of the dance scene in quite some time. Straight out of Brooklyn, this band is the brain child of DJ Andy Butler. Anthony Hegarty (from Antony and the Johnsons) lends his voice to a few cuts on the album and the group also features Kim Anne, and Nomi , who both share vocal duties.

Threadtrend was lucky enough to witness their Los Angeles debut at the Echo last night. The line outside stretched down the block with people trying to get into the show. It was very obvious that this group could have sold out a much larger venue, but instead opted to play the tiny Echo.

Tickets outside were people sold for upwards of 200 and that would have been money well spent. The group exploded onto the stage to mass hysteria as the crowd never let up their screaming and dancing. Nomi and Kim Ann both worked the stage and the crowd like veterans. During the show it was quite obvious you were witnessing something special.

Here are some pics from the show:

Business used to be a daunting word. That is, until it became the thing I depend on most to make a l

Business used to be a daunting word. That is, until it became the thing I depend on most to make a living in New York City. I didn’t even realize that the past 4 years of recording albums, booking shows, scheduling band rehearsals and managing day jobs was the start of a beautiful relationship between me and the b-word. The following is a basic guideline of the things that keep me afloat in the business of being an independent musician.

1. Organization- EVERYWHERE
I have become very friendly with Excel spreadsheets. For $10 I found an incredibly thorough budget template online. I track CD sales in a separate worksheet. I have radio and other media contacts and phone numbers in a different file. And the important thing about all of these: I keep them up-to-date. They are not snapshots; they are fluid and act like ocean waves- I need to see where the last one was in order to predict where the next one is coming from. My budget is not really a budget (since my needs and costs and income vary greatly from month to month it is hard to predict exactly what I will spend and develop a budget around that)…. instead, I use it to track my spending and my income. At the end of the year, I print out the summary sheet (which tells how much I made in CDs, tips, day jobs, speaking gigs, tax refunds… ANY source of income… along with all of my spending like gas, travel, supplies, food, extra dining out, etc…. I have over 20 categories!) and I hand it to my tax guy. He loves me. This spreadsheet is so useful, but my trick is to update it EVERY day. Any exchange of my money to ANYone, whether a few grand to my CD duplication company or $3.50 to Starbucks, it goes into my “budget”.
I keep track of the people that work for me. I have all of my band members sign receipts (even if I pay them with a check) and fill out 1099s at the end of the year. I keep all receipts that have to do with my business (CD duplication, equipment insurance, travel tickets, gas receipts) not only so I can have them when I write all that stuff off, but also to keep track of where the money I make is going. I have all band-related items in one folder. (It’s actually one of those sub-divided folders with 10 sections… my sections include: Credit card bills and statements, Insurance papers, receipts (band related), receipts (personal), tax stuff, phone and cable bills, contracts (from licensing companies, radio promotion companies, with band members), miscellaneous (jury duty papers, traffic tickets- not that I get ANY of those, etc etc), bank statements. This folder is my life, and I have one for every year.
My car has the potential for looking like a music junkie’s dirty old basement. Instead, I have my gear organized and hidden under the station wagon’s security cover. I constantly clean out garbage and keep it clean- not only for peace of mind, but to keep my gear clean too. When on the road with my band, we establish and keep our own personal space. This ensures that we survive as a band and a group of friends, and although not directly important to the “business” side of things, it keeps the business running smoothly. My charts are neat and organized in folders. My iCal calendar keeps track of my gigs and are consistent with my website and myspace show listings. And my apartment is neat. Anywhere it’s possible to stay organized and neat decreases the chances of frustration, losing something, and insanity!

2. Make Money – EVERYWHERE
I used to think that NYC musicians are doomed to playing in clubs that pay $1 per person after the first $50 is collected if you brought more than 40 people. WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN????? Luckily, I have learned that there are gigs out there that pay you decently in exchange for your performance. Simple as that. Some of these gigs are in unexpected places: house parties in peoples’ private homes, ski resorts’ après ski, summer camps, high schools, colleges, restaurants, museums, to name a few. It takes a lot of legwork and a good phone plan but the money is out there, right next to the eager listeners.
Selling CDs is one of the best ways to make money. I have gotten over being embarrassed about announcing that I have CDs for sale . . . shameless plugs are not shameless if you are making money… how are people supposed to know about your great product if you don’t tell them? CDs at live events tend to be more lucrative than CD sales online. But keep directing people to your website… tell them about it in person and direct all of your other websites (myspace, facebook, whatever) to your CD sale site. Also I’ve tried a few gimmicks. Buy 2 get a free poster and sticker, or sign up for the mailing list and get a CD half off, etc etc. I try to be original because everyone else is doing it one conventional way. It seems to be all about catching someone’s eye. Once you’ve won their eye, you have a few seconds to win over their ears, and once you’ve done that, the heart is close behind. Once you’ve won their heart, you’re in, as the heart is directly connected to the wallet.
There’s no shame in supplementing your gig money and CD sales with an additional job. Many musicians feel that they would be shifting focus away from their passion if they found a day job, especially one that wasn’t even related to music. I have found that there are several ways to fluff up the old bank account without compromising my musical integrity. First off, I teach private piano lessons. In just 4 hours a week, I can make half of my rent, and by teaching piano, I have become so much more proficient at my main instrument that I feel like I should be paying them. (Don’t tell them that!) Taking cues from my successful piano lessons, I figured out what else I love, and decided to teach that. In the summer, it’s abs classes, or guiding kayaking tours. Of course, location is important, but finding flexible people to work with you around your busy life is extremely advantageous. Even though I’ve toured for weeks at a time, my piano students enjoy a break and feel they can cancel if they are feeling stressed or scheduling doesn’t work out. I am equally flexible with them, which I believe is the key to keeping my students for the long haul.
There are a slew of in-industry jobs as well, which are great if you’re taking some time to write, or do local shows, or stay in one area for a bit of time. Interning, answering phones, or starting out as an assistant at ad agencies, record labels, jingle houses and recording studios is a great way to learn some industry jargon, get a chance to play with cool technology, and meet critical connections. After 3 years of working at a jingle house, I had written music for nationally airing commercials, just by starting as an assistant tech. The connections and recording facility that I had access to were invaluable.

3. Make Connections – EVERYWHERE
As I started to mention before, connections are critical to a career in music. And the best connections for me have turned out to be my ex-boss (who introduced me to my new boss at the jingle house), my mother’s chiropractor’s son (who hired me to write music for his websites), the intern (who introduced me to his drummer friend who now tours and records with me), my landlord (who introduced me to a friend who hosts private house concerts) . . . and my list goes on. I’ve learned to share unabashedly. The more people who know what I’m up to, the more people can help me get connected to my next “big gig”. And most times, people are overjoyed to be hearing about a young musician following her passion. It’s not like we’re talking about how great our 5’x5’ cubicle is…. we are out there doing it. And that is inspiring to people. So share away.
Following up on leads is a huge part of making and solidifying a potential connection. A phone call, lunch date, or email (that should include web links and professional looking signature) reminding the person I met through so-and-so is often enough to engage them in future conversations. I remind everyone who I am and what I am up to and what I am going for. It’s good to have an idea in your head of a brief way to convey your musical goal. (My recent one is: “I am working towards getting sponsorship for my fall UK tour while spending the summer performing around the Northeast and at private house parties. Do you know of anyone hosting a summer event that may be interested?”) And there… I got my two goals – getting sponsorship for my fall tour, and booking summer gigs- out in 2 polite sentences.

4. Make A Good Product – and put it EVERYWHERE (promote shows and CDs)
Perhaps this section should go first, but I rambled on about CDs and websites and made the assumption that anyone who considers him or herself in this music business is already ahead of this part, so I’ll be brief. The gist: make a great friggin’ record and make it (and anywhere you promote it) look cool. This may cost a little money up front, but it is well worth it- hire a graphic designer, a professional recording studio, and a good CD duplication place. I also hired a web designer who took the CD design and incorporated it into my website design, which I use as flyers for shows, posters, and other websites (like myspace). I am essentially branding myself, and consistency is key. My email signature and all paper I write on has my album logo on it. If you have a great product that is well presented, you are half way there. Distribution and exposure come after you have something to distribute and expose.

5. Don’t Give Up – EVER
A producer friend of mine says that in the music industry, overnight success takes 7 years. I figure I’m okay since I’ve been at it for 4. But I do have my moments of “seriously? I went to Cornell and now I am doing WHAT???!! making HOW MUCH a year?!!? “ I get freaked out by the size of the industry and the number of people trying to do exactly what I am doing. But I take it one step at a time, one tour at a time, one song at a time, one Excel sheet entry at a time. If I focus it all on the present, with gentle thoughts and planning for the future, I figure I’m on the right track if I’m still overjoyed that I get to perform for a living. The present is looking bright.
