The Idea-O-Rama team has a great money making idea for the MTA to help with their deficit. Instead o

The Idea-O-Rama team has a great money making idea for the MTA to help with their deficit. Instead of raising fares, sell trackable metrocards. Parents will pay extra for these monthly cards and in return, they will be able to go online at any time and see where and when the card was used. Spy on your teenagers and tweens!

However, this will only work if all parents who get the card for their kids agree NOT to tell the kids how they know they were in the West Village at 10:30 last night. If the kids know the metrocards are trackable, all the power will be lost, and the next time Stevie is somewhere he shouldn't be, he'll just say he either loaned his metrocard to a friend or lost it.

To this end, Idea-O-Rama has crafted a statement the MTA could require all parents to sign upon getting their trackable metrocard.

By signing this document, I attest that I am of sound body and mind and fully cognizant that I am spying on my child by purchasing this card. I am at peace with this decision. Furthermore, I realize that the value of this trackable metrocard is its hidden purpose of tracking the movements of my child and thus, I agree not to disclose any knowledge I have about this card to anyone under the age of 25.

I can just see the parenting blogs and listservs lighting up now with the fierce debate that will follow about the ethics of spying on your kids -- without their knowledge and consent! Get ready parkslopeparents.com; buy that extra server space right now because you're going to need it.

Have ideas for other ways to spy on NYC's teenagers and tweens? Tell it to Idea-O-Rama!

Hmm...it appears that I may have been a little premature in reporting (seriously, it was a lot of hard work getting this scoop!) that Google Maps is pretending to have a public transit option for their D.C. directions without actually making the info available.

A couple of searches for District destinations successully yielded busing directions, albeit ones that were...well, quite a bit strange.

For instance, this route...

[googlemaps http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Logan+Circle,+District+of+Columbia&daddr=1353+H+St+NE,+Washington,+DC+20002&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&dirflg=r&date=10%2F9%2F08&time=8:56am&ttype=dep&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=&sll=38.9212,-77.031971&sspn=0.020868,0.039482&ie=UTF8&start=0&ll=38.906015,-77.009271&spn=0.011784,0.045394&output=embed&s=AARTsJokWY2P1sN_h_TTjiBUPTo3C6FNPA&w=425&h=350]

…seems to involve an awful lot of walking, and who does that anymore? Also, check out the bus you’ll be taking: a Maryland commuter line. It looks like Google has managed to integrate with MTA’s data, but as of yet has not done the same with WMATA. Further confirming this are Google’s “public transit” directions from Logan Circle to Columbia Heights:

[googlemaps http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Logan+Circle,+District+of+Columbia&daddr=1370+Park+Rd+NW,+Washington,+DC+20010&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&dirflg=r&date=10%2F9%2F08&time=8:56am&ttype=dep&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=&sll=38.906015,-77.009271&sspn=0.041745,0.078964&ie=UTF8&start=0&ll=38.9212,-77.031971&spn=0.018585,0.000007&output=embed&s=AARTsJrtAYTzvTfbTOT6gZnkzXXHzJNkCQ&w=425&h=350]

Now, it could be that I haven't had enough coffee this morning, but I could have sworn that 14th St was a pretty major bus thoroughfare.

So what does this tell us? Well basically, that Maryland has totally kicked our asses in getting this important service up and running! WMATA, we can't let this stand. Do you really want people using the Kent Island bus to get around town? Is that even possible? I don't know! And I don't want to find out either. So WMATA, Mayor Fenty, Delegate Holmes Norton, and whoever else is in a position of power here in the city: heed this call. The time to bring Google public transit directions to the District is now!

I mean, not for me of course. I've got the city's buses and trains all figured out...

In what has become an annual ritual, the Tri-State Transportation Campaign and allies LI ACORN and RWDSU/UFCW Local 338 testified at the Nassau County Legislature's Government Services Committee Budget Hearing last night to demand an increase in Nassau County's contribution to Long Island Bus. The County has yet again proposed a budget which keeps its funding of the system the same as ridership and operating costs increase.

Ana Dighero of LI ACORN was the most moving in her testimony, stating that because of a dearth of service, she and many like her often "have to take a cab in the opposite direction of where we need to go just to have access to a bus that will allow us to reach our destination without being tardy [to work]."

RWDSU/UFCW Local 338 representative Neal Tepel echoed this sentiment, adding that Nassau County must find a dedicated and stable solution to funding LI Bus. Mr. Tepel said that Long Island Bus "provide[s] a critical service to residents and Nassau County must work with the state and the MTA to ensure dedicated funding. Without a permanent budgetary solution, LI Bus, one of the largest suburban transit systems in the country, will continue to struggle each year for its existence."

Tri-State's testimony, in recognition of the dire straits of the regional economy, offered alternative solutions to Nassau County's lack of funding. One such recommendation was for the County to reach out to U.S. Sens. Clinton and Schumer and ask them to work to win back federal operating support for local transit systems (including the MTA agencies), which virtually ended in 1998.

In response, the members of the Government Services Committee offered talking points and platitudes about the importance of the LI Bus system, but offered no guarantee of increased funding from the County.

Whatever Nassau County elected officials decide to do, they must do something, and fast. It is high time that Nassau County start treating LI Bus for what it is--a vital backbone in Nassau's economy and future development, and a necessity for the 33 million people who board it every year.

Recently police arrested a man at a Manhattan subway station on misdemeanor charges of attempted unl

Recently police arrested a man at a Manhattan subway station on misdemeanor charges of attempted unlawful surveillance, attempted sexual abuse, and harassment. A month earlier he took a cell phone picture up the skirt of a woman at another subway station. The woman retaliated by taking his photo and filing a police report. The police officer who arrested the man said he recognized him from that report. Just as this woman did, people in New York City who witness crimes now can take pictures on their cell phone cameras and send them when they make their 911 calls.

Sexual harassment on public transportation is a problem in many big cities. Several countries like Japan and Mexico are handling it by creating women-only subway cars and buses. In early September, New York City launched a subway ad campaign to address the rampant sexual harassment problem on subways (peruse some of the stories on the HollaBack NYC website if you want examples). Right now, a Subway Safety Coalition task force, including Right Rides and HollaBack NYC, is working to increase the visibility of the ads, add a phone number to the ads that people can use to report the crime, and encourage better sexual harassment training for police officers and subway personnel. (For a horrifying example of the need for better training, read this news story.)

AAUW has long addressed sexual harassment in the workplace and schools through its Legal Advocacy Fund, Public Policy initiatives, and research reports. However, sexual harassment on public transportation is a new frontier with few effective laws. Acknowledging that there is a problem is an important step; I hope new legislation and better policies will follow in cities nationwide. I applaud New York City for finally taking this widespread problem seriously and for its innovative initiatives. I hope they are successful.

Have you experienced sexual harassment on public transportation? Do you have any suggestions for ending it?

"Si Ves Algo Di Algo" (If You See Something Say Something) is the phrase made infamous by the NYC transit authority, aka the MTA. To the MTA that means spy on your neighbor and report everything and anyone you suspect may be a terrorist or a threat to the security of the norm. I prefer to see the meaning of that phrase that as a reminder to us to keep our eyes open and react to and interact with our evironments in positive ways. Taking back a sinister and Big Brother-esque phrase and turning it into something that speaks to people as a positive thing rather than a negative.

Balik ke Jakarta langsung wisata kuliner. Sempet ke Hanamasa (puas2in ma udang rebus buanyak buanget) trus ke Sushi Groove (gak nyadar smuanya Japanese Food). Senangnyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....

Sushi kliatanya mang kecil tapi sebenernya ngenyangin buanget, cuz nasi nya kan meskipun dikit tapi padet abiz. Makan seporsi aja dah kenyang (yah rata2 isinya 6 sampe 8 biji), apalagi 2 porsi. Tapi idealnya klo kenyangnya pengen pas seh 1 stengah porsi, tapi gmn cara mesennya???

Setelah diitung itung itung ma mbaknya kasir, bayar deh. Eh, abis itu dikasih kembalian duit ma hadiah. Tau hadiahnya apa? Ya pasti belumlah, kan aku belum ngasih tau :) Hadiahnya bibit kacang merah

Memasuki bulan suci Ramadhan, saatnya membuka lembaran
yang lebih baik dari hari kemarinn. Sebuah bibit penuh kasih

There's no privacy in New York. But I consider some places "private" because, even though I'm surrounded by people, I don't know any of them. Privacy via anonymity.

On the bus this morning, I was being anonymous and antisocial, peering over the top of my newspaper at the other passengers. Another woman ("Janice"), across the aisle, was doing the same. A few stops along, a hefty woman ("Franny") boarded and made it apparent to the rest of the bus that she and Janice were comrades. Janice faked pleasure. Franny didn't get the fake vibes and wiggled in next to Janice, striking up a conversation that lasted until they both got off at the same stop.

As I watched, I grew frightened that I might run into my own fake friend and slouched further behind my paper. I rarely run into people I know in my public-space hideaways. But then, I only moved into my apartment and started using these transportation routes a month ago. What if I'd lived on the Upper East Side for years and had a community there? Where would I hide? No escape!

On the train, I was asked for proof of payment by two officers -- I showed my fast pass both times. I was riding with my dog in a carrying case. She became restless, so I let her out of her case -- on leash, and completely under my control. The dog barked, and I was approached by officer E. Matias (badge #41). He asked if the dog was a service animal, I replied no. He asked what stop I was getting off at, I responded the next stop (Civic Center). He said ok, and proceeded to the front of the train to chat with the driver. [Don't the signs say "don't talk to the driver"?]

No warning, or explanation, was issued at this time.

As I was leaving the train, I asked Mr. Matias what the pet policy was -- officer Matias did not explain the policy, and said he was issuing me a citation.

In summary, I was asked for proof of payment 2 times, questioned about my dog, and then left alone. It was only when I asked what the pet policy was, that I was issued a citation. $50 for asking an MTA employee a question.

I am a slave to the public transportation system of the City of Los Angeles. I commute to work every

I am a slave to the public transportation system of the City of Los Angeles. I commute to work every day on the Blue Line and Green Line light rail trains, save for those times for when I need a break from backpacks being shoved into my chest; the smell of cocoa butter, weed and watermelon Jolly Ranchers; and having some fat lady’s too-big-to-be-wearing-Spandex ass resting on my shoulder as I sit.

It’s on those occasions when I gleefully subject myself to driving the grind of the 405 freeway.

In the few years I have been riding, I have become familiar with a handful of fellow train commuters. While I don’t know them by name, nor would I care to, I definitely recognize them the second I see them. And because I don’t know them by name, I have tagged them all with my very own nicknames.

Here is the list in no particular order:

Emo Boy. Just as his name implies, Emo Boy doesn’t show much emotion. He stands at the Green Line station staring into oblivion with his arms akimbo, probably hoping that the next train will miraculously jump the tracks and splatter him, sending him to The Black Parade. Same goes for when he's on the train: nothing. He looks a lot like a younger version of the Zima Guy except without the stupid hat.

Lord Farquaad. I was originally going to tag this guy Mr. Bentley after the character from “The Jeffersons” because his facial features resemble that of the George’s British neighbor. Instead, his out-of-date hairstyle, the texture not unlike the hair found atop Gene Wilder's cranium (if he has any left), earned him the moniker of Lord Farquaad. He's just not as evil--I think. Dude also wears loafers, skin-tight purple corduroys and, if I recall correctly, a Member's Only jacket. I realize I’m in Los Angeles, but c’mon...even we have limits.

Pigeon Lady. I haven’t seen her in a while but she’s hard to miss: with bulbous eyes and a small mouth, she always looks surprised. Or has something crammed in a cavity somewhere. But more to the point, she looks like the pigeon from those Mo Willems books.

Max from "Max and Ruby." I can almost hear the theme from “Max and Ruby” whenever this guy strolls by. Well, it’s less of a stroll than it is a rolling gait. I don’t even know if the guy has knees because when he sits on the bench, his legs stick all the way out. Maybe he killed fiddy men like Cotton did and had his shins blown off.

MexiMidgets*. These...these chuckling little annoyances measure about four-foot-nothing and work in the hotels in the area, and what they lack in height they make up for in girth. It’s not uncommon to have a group of them rush the train, shove people out of the way, hop on board and then squeeze into the tiniest space allowable. It's kind my idea of what Munchkin Land would be like if it were in Mexico but with less singing and more taco stands. And if you're really lucky, they'll sit next to you and rest their lunch on your lap (trust me, it's happened). To them I say this (if they understood English): you’re not as small as you think and you’re not the only people on the train! Show a little courtesy, for Chrissakes.

Face. Since my schedule was changed, I don’t see Face much anymore. She was a rather rotund woman with glasses that were not only out of style but looked like they hadn't been cleaned in at least a decade, and it wouldn't have surprised me if there were a few crusty boogers on them, too. She always sat in the corner of the train and stroked her face the entire trip, hence the nickname. Maybe she was feeling for areas she missed when she shaved that morning; maybe she just had this nervous tick. Either way, she annoyed the piss out of me.

Any Winehouse Girl. This teenager tries to mimic the eye makeup of everybody’s favorite crackwhore without much success. I got to stand real close to AWG a few times and while I’m no expert at applying makeup, it was a pretty sad sight to see. Dried-up black stuff all over her face. So I give Any Winehouse a little credit, but not a whole lot. She’d probably sell it for a gram of coke anyway.

So there you have it. I’m sure I have a few nicknames myself but blah, whatever. I'm sure they aren't as amusing as my own.

* Oh, don't get all bent out of shape. I'm Hispanic, too, and those little twits annoy the living shit out of me.

---

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="398" caption="On the M57 (destination: 5th Ave Apple Store)"][/caption]

I want to preface this post by saying that I've lived in quite a few different places in the world, and so I've experienced a lot of different kinds of ways to get around. I've lived in the suburbs of America, where I had to drive to get anywhere near anything. I've lived in "pseudo-cities" (more on that later) like San Francisco where you kind of can rely on a limited public transportation system.

New York is a totally different beast. I think the best kept secret of New York in terms of public transportation is the buses. Except for rush hour and maybe the M14, which goes crosstown on 14th street, buses are actually faster, easier, and less crowded than the subways. Live on the Upper East Side (and I don't mean you rich folks who have chauffeurs and posh apartments on Madison Ave.)? The 4/5/6 don't go that far out East, but you've got crosstown buses that go pretty much river to river on all the big streets.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="398" caption="A snapshot of some of the bus routes in Manhattan (from 14th Street to Centrl Pk North)"][/caption]

The extensive network of buses alone can take you to a lot of places, but public transportation in New York is so convenient and robust because the buses and subways complement each other. You can essentially go anywhere on the island of Manhattan on a $2 Metrocard. It might seem daunting at first, but it is actually very simple to familiarize onself with the different subway lines. It took me about a month before I got a pretty good handle on which lines go where. The buses took a little bit longer because they seemed a little more confusing at first. After a while, though, you realize that they are pretty simple. They usually go up/down or across. I don't know about other New Yorkers, but I have a map of Manhattan in my head, and whenever I need to go somewhere, I kind of consult that mental map and can come up with a few ways to get there.

For example, say I want to go to Chinatown from the Upper West Side. I know that I can take the yellow (Q/N/R/W) or the green (6) lines to Canal. But I also know that the orange (B/D) line will get me there as well (to Grand Street). From the UWS, it's probably easier to just get to Columbus Circle/59th Street and transfer for the orange line. B/D are both express in Manhattan, so it will be faster than going to the Eastside and catching the 6.

Oh, and the good thing about streets in Manhattan is that, unless you're downtown, you can count on the names being in numbers. Whoever came up with this is a genius. There are exceptions, but basically the avenues go up and down and the streets go East and West. The even numbered avenues are one way going NORTH, and the odd ones are south-bound only. A lot of people seem really lost when they come out of subways, but if one can keep that simple fact in mind, it's a lot easier to get oriented.

Vorzimmerdrachen

Also her mit dem Termin.

v Liebe Frau Kuhgarten.

I descended onto the subway platform just as a train was leaving this morning, so I knew I had enough time to sit on a bench. One had two people separated by three seats, so I sat in the middle. (NEVER sit next to someone if you don't have to. Everyone in New York has personal space issues.) I put my lunch bag on the seat to my right, in between me and another woman. As soon as I set it down, the lady erupted like a crazy jack-in-the box: "Get that off me! Get that off me, you moron! Get that off me!"

Note that the bag was not on her, but next to her -- a foot away, really. I thought pointing this out was unwise, so I lifted the bag from the seat and put it on the floor. As I sat there, my thoughts went through this progression:

1. That was surprising.
2. I hope she doesn't talk to me again.
3. Was I supposed to respond? Should I respond now?
4. No, don't respond. Do not respond.
5. Should I move?
6. No! You're brave.
7. Right?
8. Yes. Right.
9. Wait...what actually happened? She called me a moron. Maybe I actually was -- did I put the bag on her lap?
10. Had she claimed that seat? Is there some subway rule I don't know about?
11. I'm confused.

I finally decided she had a mental problem. But questions remained: what do you do when a strange lady shrieks at you in the subway? And does a lunch bag have a right to an otherwise empty seat?

I’ve been reading Atlas Shrugged for the past few months. (I am a slow reader.) My copy of this book is about a foot tall and five pounds. At first, when I read it on the subway, I was embarrassed -- what was I trying to do, prove something? “Hey, passengers! I bet you thought I was illiterate. But I’m not!” I tried to be inconspicuous by laying the book on my lap and hunching over it like a dying person.

But as the months passed, I grew proud of the feat I was accomplishing. Yeah, I was reading Ayn Rand! Check me out, subway! I started whipping it out while standing, right in other passengers’ faces. This was even better, because I was reading while balancing.

But I don’t just brag. I check out other people’s books, too, and judge them. Apparently, I’m not the only one -- this is a common MTA pastime. But I still haven’t figured out exactly what book qualities make me judge a person smart or stupid. It’s not length -- if a passenger is carrying a book I’ve seen on a television commercial, I scoff, no matter how much it weighs. It’s not whether it’s a “classic,” either: Harry Potter readers universally receive an A+. That reader loves magic!

It may be how similar their tastes are to mine. In which case I’m a narcissist. But then, would I be blogging if I weren’t?
