A little late I know but better late than never!

Mozilla now joins Google, Harvard University, VeriSign, PayPal, AOL, Trend Micro and Lenovo in partnering with StopBadware.org

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., September 16, 2008 — StopBadware.org, the university-based consumer protection initiative developed to combat badware in novel ways, announced today that Mozilla, creator of popular free and open source software such as Firefox, will become its newest sponsor. Mozilla joins Google, PayPal, Lenovo, VeriSign, AOL and Trend Micro in supporting the initiative led by Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society.

“Firefox was developed through the collective knowledge of a community,” said Jonathan Zittrain, co-founder of StopBadware.org and author of The Future of the Internet – And How to Stop It. “We look forward to applying lessons of Mozilla’s open development process to our own efforts in fighting badware.”

This move will bring Mozilla's experience to the table when it comes to phishing attacks and other viral nasty's out on the tubes. :-)

As you may or may not know, open source software comes without warranty, hence you must accept the agreement (GNU GPLv2/LGPL/BSD etc...) before installation will go ahead.

However, there has been a recent discussion about the EULA when installed in Ubuntu Linux (one would assume it's Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu cousins as well) using Firefox. The discussion being that the EULA should be displayed when first running Firefox itself and not relating to Ubuntu at all.

The EULA itself in Firefox covers the anti-malware protection but also was amended recently to clearly state that the software was open source in all forms - code and in binaries as well.

The latest stats show that Google’s open source Chome browser share increasing at the expense

The latest stats show that Google's open source Chome browser share increasing at the expense of Mozilla's open source browser Firefox according to the latest stats from UK publication PCPro:

Google's new browser, Chrome, is already being used by around 5% of the visitors to Pcpro.co.uk, less than a week after its launch.

Chrome has already overtaken long-established browsers such as Opera and Safari to become the third most popular browser among visitors to this site.

But the Google browser's early success appears to have come at the expense of Firefox, which has seen its market share dip considerably over the past week.

August stats for Pcpro.co.uk gave Internet Explorer a 47.6% share of the browsers used to visit the site, with Firefox close behind on 44.1%.

However, since the launch of Chrome last Wednesday, the landscape has changed significantly with Internet Explorer claiming 50.1% (up 2.5%), Firefox on 37.2% (down 6.9%) and Chrome nestled in third place with 4.9%.

PC Pro: News: Chrome off to a flyer - at the expense of Firefox

However, all is not lost as Mozilla Europe President Tristan Nitot was quoted last week by the publication in an interview as saying:

In an exclusive interview with PC Pro last week, the president of Mozilla Europe, Tristan Nitot, said he didn't believe Google intended to harm Firefox. "I think Chrome is not aimed at competing with Firefox," he said. "Rather it's made for competing with Internet Explorer."

It is still early days for the Chrome browser and while browser stats may indicate a shift away from the main browsers, Chrome itself is still in beta against its more stable counterparts such as Flock, SeaMonkey and Opera.

However, if you're looking for a replacement to IE, I have a suggestion. ;-)

More press for the new open source Google Chrome browser. The coverage here on MozillaLinks also includes comments from Mozilla's own contributors as well. Although I have to say I agree with Disruptive Innovations'/Mozilla's Daniel Glazmans comments about the new browser:

Your search engine is google, your mail is google mail, your docs are on google docs, your maps are google, the ads you see are google, your system is Android, your browser is Google Chrome. Did someone hear the word “monopoly” ?

Let’s see it from the bright side of life: there’s a new OSS and standards-compliant browser and that’s good, and there’s a high probability Steve Ballmer is currently breaking a few chairs and it’s even better.

A monopoly is never good for competition and Browser Wars 2 does bring back fond memories of the latter 20th Century AKA the late 90's with Microsoft driving at Netscape until it was sold off to AOL. But having said that, dethroning Microsoft and giving a big push to OSS at the same time is never a bad thing ;-)

That being said, the new beta is now available for download from it's project home page here and is currently available form the Win32 platform with Mac and Linux on the way.

The post itself also goes through the various features including it's anti-malware, WebKit rendering engine and V8 JavaScript engine.

Introducing another Mozilla Labs project - Ubiquity.

Ubiquity is the latest Mozilla Project to connect the web as opposed to its current site-centric appraoch, Ubiquity aims to make it more user-centric. As an example, think of a mashup. That helps if you want to link an address to Upcoming.org through Yahoo! Maps but, what if you want to E-mail it?

Ubiquity comes to the aid with the ability to add in the map, the review of the location and the co-ordinates into your E-mail as well using URL shortening services like TinyURL with a few keystrokes. And you know the best bit? You don't even have to leave the browser window you're on!

How cool is that! :)

Recently I have been playing with my phone and my laptop, using the latter for setting up a ad-hoc network to surf the Internet, I realized that there is a glaring hole in the existing S60 web browser. There is no support for tabbed browsing!

For a company that is moving towards becoming a Internet company, it seems wired that the third party offerings are offering a very important and necessary feature. Nokia which is the global number one, is not doing enough in the web accessibility, sure there are a lot of applications out there to enhance your web experience. What about the core web experience? What about just surfing the net?

Mozilla Foundation is on its way to releasing a mobile version of its award winning Firefox and there are many more out there!

Nokia had better up its game and provide a completely new web browser soon, probably in a firmware update!

Today, millions of people are celebrating Independence Day in America. Originally, begun to celebrate the Declaration of independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776, millions are simply celebrating family, togetherness and freedom. Being a Brit with many American friends - some in the US, some in the UK trying to reclaim their dependence, I've celebrated many an Independence Day and always enjoyed partaking in the celebration of freedom (the Brits were all too happy to take that away from so many over the centuries).

Since joining Mozilla last year, I've spent alot of time thinking about what Freedom means particularly on the Web, and for the Web. Be that Freedom from the often evils of propriety technology, freedom to choose and online privacy, to accessibility and security. Its clear to me that here at Mozilla we have been doing an amazing job with our products and work, but there is a long way to go before the Web is closer to the vision we set out in the original Mozilla Manifesto guiding principles. Every day though we do get a little closer, and the Mozilla community grows a little stronger.

Launching Firefox 3 on June 17th recently, and seeing the amazing 8M+ number of downloads clock up in 24-hours - I was thrilled to see so many people freely making a choice on which Web browser they use. In fact, since those 24 hours, another 22M of you have also made that choice (Firefox 3 was now downloaded more than 30 million times in the last 18 days). To take a trip back down memory lane -- some years ago, selecting your Web browser of choice was virtually impossible, there was really only one choice for most people. I'm glad to say we've come a long way since those days. Mozilla as an open source project and movement has been pivotal in driving back innovation and bringing forward choice to this most important window on the Web. But the work is by far not done, and we are only at the foot of the mountain.

So today on July 4th, I would urge you to also help promote freedom and choice on the Web.

Tell someone they do have a options,

show them how they can participate,

help them understand they too can help make the Web a better place for everyone.

Happy July 4th!

After almost two hours of waiting, the Fox has arrived onto my notebook. The Download Day started for us in India at 22:30 Hrs but the site was down even before the said hour approached! I gave it half-an-hour time (maybe they were uploading the files, beefing up the cache etc etc) and was constantly monitoring the release tracking Wiki. I also was checking up most of the Mozilla mirrors...might be there was a new version all ready for me to grab...but alas! all the 3.0 folders had was a "We're not quite ready yet" message.

Finally, at about 00:35 HRS IST, this download page was accessible and I promptly clicked upon the Download link for the en-US/Win32 version. The 7.1 MB download took a little over a minute and when it was ready, I was in two minds as to whether should I uninstall the older version or overwrite it! I eventually chose the latter and boy! was the installation quick! The mandatory extension-compatibility check took a while (since I have many of them) and I was a tinge disappointed to see many favourite extensions not making the cut! Hopefully, the makers will scale upto 3.0 soon. Once installed, I quickly tweaked some settings and am good to go....and this is my first post from the latesht and fastesht and coolesht browser - Firefox 3.0.....FTW!

First Impressions:

Itz lightning fast...seriously, I never logged onto my Dashboard this fast!

The 'New Tab" button to the left of the tab-bar is gone! Instead, there's a 'Undo Close Tab' button!

Tabs are bigger than in 2.0. The Opera influence???

One-Click bookmarking and two-click categorizing and tagging of oft-visited sites.

Revamped Add-ons page - Search for new ones, Update existing ones, view installed plug-ins (plug-ins, not add-ons)...all in one page.

Uncluttered status-bar. Add-ons that are displayed on the status bar go unobtrusively to the rightmost corner. Progress bar too goes right-wards.

No AdBlock :(

The memory leak has NOT been fixed!!! 3.0 still hogs up 70+ MB of my RAM!!!

More as I continue using it further...
